    Awesome breakdown man. As a one man shop desperately longing for the days of crews and budgets, this is incredibly helpful (I'd still rather have the crew however...). I especially appreciate the throw distance comparison, which I constantly struggle to grasp (lighting is very new to me) and not many people talk about. Real quick, I was curious what you think about Intellytech's 3'x5' Mega-8 Litecloth (mainly just looking for thoughts on the 3x5 form factor)? Love the idea of a giant 400w source like this that doesn't have the space demands of a giant dome... what am I missing? Cheers

    Great video. It seems very few people know about the Brokeh lighting system. Although they seem fantastic. I'm picking up the FAK for the key light this week. I can't wait to test it out. Also, I wonder what the ETA and price are for Aputure's new 2600w lights? Seems like that amount of power would actually keep up with an M18

    • @JustinPhillip
      @JustinPhillip  10 місяців тому

      Oh i talked kino's in the beginning of my channel. I had divas back in 2017-2019. Nowadays, they do offer LED versions, but honestly, too rich for my blood. But yes, if you can afford them, i think they're an excellent option! But with all the other options available nowadays, i dont think the old tubes are the way to go, not anymore. However, if you can get an empty coffin, and put your led tubes inside, that's pretty clutch, bonus if it has the louvre and diffusions.

    • @organismx
      @organismx 10 місяців тому

      @@JustinPhillip Oh I was talking about the LED models not the OG Kinos. But based on what you answered me should I assume that the quality of light of the LED Kinos is not necessarily better than the cheaper alternatives LED panels that are on the market ?

    Excellent video Justin!
    1. What type of diffusion would you recommend for pushing light through a window from outside?
    2. How much punch do you need for magic cloth? 600d is my strongest key at the moment. I have 1/2 grid, ultrabounce, unbleached muz at the moment.
    3. Do all your floppies break down?

    • @JustinPhillip
      @JustinPhillip  7 місяців тому +1

      Thanks!
      Pushing light from outside i generally don't diffuse it, unless it's a really really strong light. But it also depends on the look you're going for. If you want the frosted window look then line the outside of your window with a sheet of 250 or blast the light through a full grid. Magic cloth cuts your light by nearly 3 stops. So your 600d has just been reduced to a 200W. Yes, my floppies are on breakaway frames or wag flags.

    • @pizzomedia7261
      @pizzomedia7261 7 місяців тому

      @@JustinPhillip thanks! I was thinking a light diffusion like highlight or 1/4 grid just to soften things up a bit and take the edge off. I do have 2 600Ds that I could rig up on one combo, but not sure if I could get similar results to a 1200d. I have not compared. Keep going deep into the weeds, its all in the details, very helpful!

    Great vid as usual...i'm not sure how it is in the U.S. but here in Brazil, you pay also lamp usage by time because those things are so expensive. So it's really annoying for the DP and director to keep track of light setup usage...turn off and on all the time...heat exposure accidents... really not great...unfortunately it's unbeatable in quality.

    haha I thought I was anal about clipped highlights but I don't think your keyboard on the desk is hot at all. it looks totally fine to me and there's no detail lost. my big pet peeve is how a lot of super high-budget mainstream movies, especially the superhero/sci-fi/action ones, have majorly blown out skies. like, every sky now is just blown out white CG sky and I don't get the appeal at all. I agree with you that some of the shots from 18 1/2 are way too clipped but I've come to like a little heat in the image. like, if there's part of a cloud that's hot--I just roll with it because it adds a little punch and contrast to the image.

    Um, good video but an M18 is NOT a fresnel. A fresnel is a piece of glass in front of the lamp with rings in it to create an even beam that is cuttable with barn doors. The M18 is an open face lenseless PAR. Lensless only because of its built in reflector that has fascets in it, compared to traditional pars that require swappable lenses to adjust the beam angles (M18 you twist a knob on the back). An M18 beam is very uneven especially in full flood compared to a true fresnel. So comparing the 1200d with its dishes to the M18 is very fair imo since they’re using the same reflector technology to throw light out. In spot yeah an M18 is gonna outpunch a 1200 but in flood and in “medium mode” the Nanlux and aputure 1200s have been shown to be as bright or brighter.

    I started UA-cam with three Rotolight Neos twos' in my studio. They weren't that powerful. They are only good for closeup situations. The Neo threes' are better. I will say that build quality is not very strong and not really something I would want to travel with. Mainly the clear fronts that you twist to put the gels in, those get scratched up very quickly and are so thin they could break. While the power was good the build was not. So I sold them.

    • @JustinPhillip
      @JustinPhillip  10 місяців тому

      yeah, the build looks questionable even on the picture. I was more interested in the output.
