What is your favourite light to use on set?
Mark Bone how do you feel about color changeable LED tube lights such as the Astera AX1s? I’ve seen a lot of people using them recently and they looks awesome, but wasn’t sure if there was enough control to use them for more narrative stuff.
My favourite light to use on set is the Falcon Eyes SO-48TD, it can be very soft! Great video keep rocking Mark. Cheers.
@@the_allens_ I used those lights on my music video HARM. They're super fun, not always the best when you want to control the spill of light but they allow you to get super creative
@@meziens15 Never used it! I'll check it out
Definately RGB lights and natural light.
I love the ideas in this video. One thing that should be remembered is that day light changes so you gotta work quick. It is organic but you have to plan.
Truth. Clouds, birds, planes, choppers, sometimes you don't notice until you go to edit. ugh. Same with blinds to seal off windows. Unless you black them out, light changes (it gets through) and so does color cast from the blinds. Best to use window light for ambient or rim and use a light for face.
Yeah, you get the good light and you are on a roll but then you take too long or it suddenly changes but you aren't done...what's cool though is that even with that sometimes I have seen where you can still get away with the natural light with a small soft light to boost what's there, do a little camera adjust and extend your available time.
Dude, listening to you is making such a difference to my attitude regarding film making. You obviously take some much pride in your work and have a real passion for it. I can see this channel blowing up this year, thanks for the inspiration Mark.
yes we can really see that lol... this is one of those channel i wish i got earlier
@@PrioBak please do not listen to this video, he got a lot of things wrong
Can you do a video on making short documentaries (like, no more than 4 to 5 minutes). The “how to” and essentials to focus on. Thanks Mark.
So cool because he responded and has one! ua-cam.com/video/v62B5DELG5k/v-deo.html
I’ve been binge watching all of your videos and didn’t realize how “old” they were, this information you give is timeless man. I’m new to this 📸
Thank you Juan!
ive watched probably 20-30 videos on lighting over the years....this is the best one. kudos
So here’s the thing: You’re making such insightful videos that it makes me not want to listen to anyone else. GREAT knowledge being shared!
haha, thank you Didier!
Love the video! However, I think it’s important to remember that all of the lighting setups are relative, and there is no “right way” to light someone. I’ve done corporate work where they want the high-key, talking head look. It’s important to remember to let the context of the video define your lighting method. Cheers! Great video! Your work looks awesome.
I love that you are a working professional and experienced filmmaker on a range of productions. All these shots are excellent
For someone like me who don't have lights now it's a great trick/tips this video!
That 45° angle tactic did more to articulate how to find good light to me than most of the lighting videos I've come across on UA-cam. Seriously, thank you Mark!!!
the benefits of someone who actually does this for a living not just a UA-cam
Thanks for the update. I'm a DP with over 25 years of Experience and I enjoyed your tutorial. Confirms that I'm doing things right and you even managed to teach me some new tips. Keep up the good work, I really enjoy your vlog.
I love the windows advice. On my thesis film in college I had a room that had three small windows along one wall just above most actors hairline. I blocked so many scenes around where those windows were. Saved so much time on setups.
This is the real mentor channel!
I've been watching lighting videos for 8 hours, this is the best explanation. Thanks!
You nailed it! The variable ND & Diffusion is key for me.
This was a really different and refreshing perspective on lighting!
You are just so good! The most value i’ve seen on UA-cam till date. You make other creators that teach on UA-cam look like, yeah just less professional and experienced ;).
This is a great framework to reference back to later, thank you for the effort in putting this together!
I've been wary of using natural light as it's super shifty this time of year. In Arizona it get super cloudy and the exposure swings can be crazy.
Bro Mark I love all your videos man. Keep up the good work. I love seeing the budget way to make films. I feel like it makes the film so much more important to the creators and gives the film its own vibe.
Man, tons of useful information here. Subbed!
your interviews just look the best in comparrison with others cinematographers interviews! FANTASTIC WORK - also in explaining!
Thanks again Mark, used this video as a major reference for some heavy run and gun interviewing this week and it worked a charm. This video and the advice to use timelines and not bins when editing are major major lift ups in terms of getting the good shit done!
This is one of the most useful videos I have seen so far on lighting, I loved it so much. Thank you so much for sharing!
Jan H. Maaso thank you Jan!!
awesome video, well explained!!
Thanks mate!!
Mark thanks for all the great info in your videos, you have a lot of real world examples from your films plus simple explanations that make each video super informative!
These videos are amazing, absolutely the most useful and engaging filmmaking videos I've seen on UA-cam, without question. Please keep them coming!
Thank you Ben! Really appreciate it!
@@markbone Oh man -- you're so welcome. I can't even say how glad I was to discover this channel. That you're a Canadian (from Toronto?) is just a bonus. I'm stuck in lockdown in South Africa for a while but once I'm back to North America will definitely use your Amazon links for sure -- keep us posted on anything else which can be done to throw support back your way!
Thanks for these tips
The best part about watching your videos is you cover topics which haven't been touched before on UA-cam
Thank you!
Nice Video!!!
I love the summary at the end!!!
Amazing tips my man. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge!!
Hey Mark, these were some great tips! Awesome vid.
This was very helpful! Thank you, Mr. Bone
This is perfect, one part of doing a vid for a customer section is a mini doc on why they love their business and this is perfect as they have a fantastic backdrop next to a big open window. Perfect
finally more practical and simple explained cinematography tips. it happens so less. so many people just do gear talk, tech talk an blablabla. your practicailty from the beginning got me hooked from the start off! ;)
Gabriel Ortet Boll thanks Gabriel! Always happy to talk about the stuff no one wants to!
I really enjoy watching your videos because you show what you work on, so many youtubers just talk about it but never show examples from their real 👌👌👌
SaL your PaL thanks man! Happy to share my work as a director :)
This is the info I need. Thanks Mark
Great tips! Thank you, I will use this in my next documentary.
I am glad I came across your channel. Love all your advice and will book your course later.
Look forward to seeing you a part of the AOD community
Such great tips dude, thanks. Gonna try this RIGHT ABOUT NOW!
DO IT!!!! Tag the results!
My inner skeptic cannot believe the amount of actionable info your videos contain for free. I'm low key waiting for you to turn this all into a pitch. Even when you do talk about AOD it somehow doesn't come off as snake oil. Pls, whatever you're reason for doing this for, keep it going.
agreed - he is building his brand by adding real value to filmmakers' lives - smart approach
Such good information! Thanks Mark, so useful. Subbed!
Thank you so much it will improve my documentaries so much! I never really new why some of my interviews looked great and others terrible... now I get it :)
AN URBAN ODYSSEY knowing is half the battle
Really valuable hints! Thank you for this!
I just love your channel! Your videos are the most helpful i've seen on UA-cam!
Michel Bednarz thank you! Glad I could help
Love how informative your videos are 😊✌🏻 Thank you
Really glad I came across your channel! Gold information, subscribed!
your videos are always so informative and helpful, i really appreciate your insight
Thank you!!
It's interesting that you had a good example in a school room, as school was where I really studied how light affected mood and memory. I could recall what was being taught by association with the light.
Big thanks!
I learned a lot of things since I discovered your channel 2 days ago. God bless you bro
This content is very illuminating. Thank you
(I know this is not your newest video but I hope you read this) Dude, your channel is a gold mine for information! There's no channel that is as diverse with knowledge and information as your channel. The only one that comes close is Creative North. Other youtubers fall into the trap of slowmo b-roll but you are the real deal! You have the knowledge from actual filmmaking. I watched already a bunch of your videos and I honestly feel like I learned new things. All the best for the future. Subbed.
Jesus Mark! Where have you been all my life! This is so great! Thank you so much for such great tips! I have to do a gig soon and light was always the scariest part for me but you just made it reassuring! Keep it up!
Lighting doesn't have to be scary! Big soft sources are always the place to start
Yup. Mark is the real deal. Only good tips. I am baffled. Actually I should know cause I studied all that and yet I recon that I know nothing. Maybe it's because I do not practice enough.
Same feeling here !!! Thank you Mark.
This channel is pure GOLD!
Thanks Mate!!
Thank you Mark, for all your insights and great tips
Glad you like them! Thanks Martin!
Amazing Video Mark! I love how there is not a lot of fluff/crazy amount of unnecessary B Roll. Just great amazing practical tips. Just want you to know you are my new favorite UA-camr.
Thanks Brian! Who has time for “banger” b-roll anyways 😂
Just found your channel today. I mainly film weddings. At first I didn’t think your channel would help me but I was wrong. I’ve learned so much! Thanks 😊
What a helpful video. I love your content ❤
Loved this video!! Great advice, thank you! 💕
thank you so much for sharing your experiences!
Finally a truly amazing video on lighting! 👏🏼
Brilliant! Thank Brandon Li for bringing me here.
Awesome video, Mark! Thanks for the tips. I'm going to be shooting a few interviews soon so this will come in handy.
Your videos are awesome! The info is so helpful and motivating for beginners and low-budget filmmakers. Keep it up :)
I know I'm definitely going to use these tips... awesomeness man. Thank you.
Ah, so good! Love natural lighting and these three tips were insightful. Thank you!
Thank you!! :)
You're an inspiration Mark! 👍

Useful and thought provoking. Thanks
Great video and explination! Thanks!
Amazing instruction invaluable.
Great tips - thanks!
I've sometimes run into light temperatures isssue when shooting long afternoon interviews and the light changes.
Keep it up MAN!Nice and useful video!
This is so helpful.... thank you for making this video. I will definitely use this technique.
Connor Thompson 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you so much for teaching this!
Great tips! I always need helping with lighting. First time I heard of you was the free event with Matti H. a couple weeks ago in Toronto.
You & YCimaging give the best advice on filming on a budget
true
ITS VERY USEFULL.. THANK YOU VERY MUCH..
What a great video and awesome lighting tips! I’ll be trying this out a lot more. Thanks and keep posting these technique videos!
Thanks mate! Posting lots more about cinematography this year
Very important information for filmmakers!!!
great tutorial man. I shoot a lot of interviews for my professional work, and this is great information.
Great information here! Thanks
Great video! I can’t believe the shots you were getting after looking at space. Especially in the classroom. If I didn’t know you were in there, I would’ve had no idea what the location was.
Great useful tips Mark, thanks for the effort. Well explained and to the point. I wish I had seen it few years back when I was starting out and needed this kind of info. Still great vid that sums it up.
Very good tutorial! Thank you for it!
One of the best channels out there. Thanks Matti for convincing Mark to start his channel
again - we really enjoyed your stuff!
Good stuff. Thank you.
I love the look of window light in both stills and motion. Thanks for the effort and sharing. I am an appreciative subscriber. Thumbs up.
