      Not really. In every canon ending except 1 the legion crumbles. Without Caesar, it falls. Which makes sense. He's allocated himself every responsibility because the leadership below him are either bloodthirsty, conniving, or inept.
      The ncr is bloated but that bloat is also a strength because the hierarchy of decisions doesn't start and end at one person.

    Fun fact: “Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes” is a historical Latin phrase usually translated as “Beware of Greeks bearing gifts”, or more accurately as “I am wary of Greeks even when they bring gifts”. This is in reference to the Trojan Horse, which is why it’s paired with the explanation of having posed as a mercenary to infiltrate the camp.

      @@some_shitposting_idiot3023 Jesus christ my guy, why get so defensive. That's not even why the voice acting, most of the time, sounds like this. It's an issue with how they protect themselves from leaks. There's very little voice direction, from what I've heard, in the Fallout games. People are mostly handed lines, for dozens of characters in dozens of different scenarios (because these games have a lot of npcs but relatively very little, although quite talented voice actors), and they don't always have the entire picture of their character - the context in which they talk, the relationships they harbor... I wager it's more intent that's made clear. But this is speculation, all I've heard over the years is that the instructions aren't always too keen and descriptive.
      That said, there's also the issue of how quickly this game had to be made, further hurting it.
      I'm personally used to the mostly decent but sometimes questionable voice acting in this game series. But I just wanted to point out to friend over there why his frustrations might be... aaaand then I stumbled onto your needlessly aggressive and condescending comment.

I second what Kuo said, and would add that if Caesar didn't forbid failure in his ranks as an option, Silus would have most likely immediately returned to the Fort for further instruction as soon as he escapes in the legion playthrough option. He still seems loyal to the cause, just not so far gone as to not see the bigger picture when it comes to the Legions inevitable downfall if Caesar doesn't find a suitable heir, and not stupid enough to kill himself for a cause that he knows in the back of his mind is pretty crazy, even if he is still loyal to it because he was born into it / indoctrinated into it.

    You get to hear over and over and fucking over again up and down about how much NCR sucks, but almost nothing from the story about how royally screwed the Legion is even without your help. Silus is one of the rare examples that do multiple things for the Legion's story.
    -He demonstrates agency that is sure to crop up in the Legion ranks when he questions why a high ranking officer is treated like fodder.
    -He demonstrates the physical weakness of the Legion, that despite the rigourous training Legion's men arent at the peak of physical strength they are led to believe they are.
    -His outright irritation when people dont play into his performance of cruelty and evil shows a side of the Legion that expresses the same confusion that the tribals they executed displayed when faced with an opposition that isnt intimidated.
    Silus carries a lot of the weight here and bless him for it because you literally never get anything like this anywhere else until you get to Joshua Graham and Ulysses.

    I've always wondered...does Silus even speak enough Latin to get what you're saying? Like I doubt that the average legionary or centurion would have a solid enough education in Latin to speak it beyond some phrases here and there. Hell, most of their pronunciations of words beyond 'Caesar' and 'Ave' aren't even that accurate, and Arcade likely knows more Latin than half the legion put together.
    I like to believe that Silus was secretly bead-sweating when he heard the courier speak Latin, and not because his loyalty is being questioned.

      Officers like a centurion usually have a higher level of training compared to the average soldier. If I had to guess based on what I know of Roman legion structure he would be something equivalent to a first lieutenant or captain in a modern military. Officers like this have formal training where they learn more than just how to fight. They’ll read books like The Art of War, Meditations, or The Prince on the philosophy of war as well.
      So I don’t think it would be unreasonable to say for someone who is such a Rome nerd like Caesar to have his officers learn a bit of Latin, he probably has them read the Roman essentials like Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations, Julius Caesar’s commentaries on the Gallic War, some things about the Marian Reforms, maybe The Rise of the Roman Empire by Polybius, probably some Tacitus, Cassius Dio, Suetonius and Plutarch as well.

      @@Tony-The-Motherfucking-Tiger i feel like that's mostly an issue of the rush job oblivion had to do on the legion to get it released in 18 months. if they had more time, even just 6 months more, i believe we would know more about the inner workings of the legion. it's entirely possible (if fallout can ever be freed from bethesda's grubby hands) that another game set in the west would explore the legion further.

    You know something I realize. His saying of "Christ, I'm a Centurion!" is pretty damning against him
    All of the legion are supposed to worship Mars, the Roman god of war, and Caesar as Mars' son sent to Earth. But instead, he clearly reveres Jesus Christ. So he doesn't REALLY believe the legion's religion.

    • @Pyrrhus_of_Epirus
      @Pyrrhus_of_Epirus Рік тому +23

      Christ is also just a pretty common phrase in the English language now, and has lost much of its religious connotations - so I imagine it doesn’t really mean much to a Legionary to say it.

      I mentioned this in another comment, but this probably means Silus comes from a lineage of Christian tribals and he was never fully assimilated into the Legion.

      @xenodroid Рік тому +12

      @Meme Doctor While I think the theory of Silus being a Christian tribal like TVRK said is really cool, I think it's much more likely that Sanchuniathon is correct on this one. In movies like Star Wars Han Solo mentions Hell multiple times but there's no mention of any religious concept of hell in the SW lore. Sometimes writers throw in common expressions like "for Christ sake" without thinking about the possible implications.

      @@xenodroid True, but "Hell" is a bad example considering a lot of world religions have their own version of hell, or similar afterlife, typically calling it a similar word in their own native language
