***** Yeah, but most people are looking at Dark Helmet's face, since that's the focus of the zoom and the immediate joke. The hand and Colonel Sandurz's expression are a lot more subtle, and therefor often go unnoticed.
i dont think people realize just how unique and special Michael Winslow's talent is, some people are great at making different voices, but making convincing and realistic sound effects with your voice is not only rare but fucking amazing!
So many people do laser gun noises, "pew, pew, pew" that directors have to watch out for that in making such movies. But I don't think they made that joke in this movie.
0:18 Take a moment to realize that it takes extensive film schooling, storyboarding, planning, and many, many hours of special effects work and filming to make a six second clip of a giant jar of jam hitting a radar dish. This is why I love Spaceballs.
The announcer being unintelligible even after turning the speakers off is one of the oldest jokes in the book, but Helmet's reaction is what really makes this sketch hilarious! 😂
Even better, look at Winslow after Dark Helmet wipes some of the jam off the screen. He's holding his hand over his mouth like he's trying desperately to stifle his oncoming laugh.
Retired radar operator here - I can confirm this is exactly what happens when a radar is jammed, Soviet jam is surprisingly good got that "made by nana" taste you can't beat.
Sad thing is there are ways to do it (at least in Czech), but the translators did not thought very hard about it. We have two versions of dub. In one they say the typical Czech word for jamming radar and you have to know English in order to get it. In the other they just say "jam" in Czech fonetics. Quite sad because in our language, the word for "blurry" image can also be applied (from certain point of view) to the result of jammed radar screen AND it is almost a homophone of the word we use for spreading butter (or jam :D )on bread slices. So, literarly translated: "Radar about to be blurried"
Luckily in Finnish the phrase "give me the raspberry" while not meaning anything in Finnish, was two letters apart from a well known rude expression (the "f*ck you equivalent asking someone to sniff a lady's genitalia) so we laughed anyway, even though the jamming part was just random dada.
Such a work of genius, so many small things, I mean just that at the end when he nudges the officer to make him realize that the camera is going to do a close up so he should move out of frame. Brilliant.
1:03 This is probably one of my favorite Rick Moranis moments. Even Michael Winslow was slightly cracking up! Listen closely to "I'm having trouble with the radar, sir" after Dark Helmet throws everything on the desk away. XD
yes, this is Michael Winslow (Jones from the Police Academy movies). that does the funny sound effects. Notice how you can hear him almost cracknupbright after Rick Moranis throws the radio, and says "Now what is it!". lol
I once told my brother that this scene was the funniest thing I've ever seen. He looked at me, "What? A pun? Really?" "Yes, yes it is." Ah, it was delightful.
Take a minute to look at the special effects of this movie and how good they really are for a parody... its because ILM (industrial light and magic) did it. That's right, the same guys behind the real star wars. So one day the guys at ILM had someone come up to them to tell them they needed an exterior shot of a space ship, with a large radar dish on it. No problem, they say, that's right up our alley. Ok, now I need you to throw a jar of jelly at it and have it break all over the dish. Can you imagine?
It took me a while to notice, but the phrase "give me the raspberry" has another, equally funny meaning: sticking your tongue out and "blowing raspberries" at someone.
When the Radar Officer tells Dark Helmet, "I'm having trouble with the radar, sir," there's a bit of a chuckle at the end. It should be noted that the officer was played by Michael Winslow, man of ten thousand sound effects. Almost a dozen Police Academy movies and this was the point where he almost loses his composure? Hilarious. (You can also see him covering his mouth as Helmet proclaims the jam to be "Raspberry!")
It shows just how many times in my life I've watched this movie in my life, but I swear Michael Winslow almost starts laughing during the third "I'm having trouble with the radar, sir!".
I really wish there were still comedy/parody movies like this nowadays. Just look at the amount of gags they squeeze into this 2 minute clip. The wordplay on "jamming" the radar, followed by the sheer ridiculousness of throwing a jar of raspberry jam onto their satellite dish, followed by Winslow's outrageously funny sound-making, Helmet's and Sandurz' reactions, the camera gag. It's like the scene doesn't even let you recover from laughter and just does a whole firework worth of jokes.
Hah, just noticed Dark Helmet trying to move Colonel Sandurz out of the way of the camera at the end and then him noticing it. Oh, the little things...
anyone ever noticed at 1:06 that it sounds like Michael Winslow is having a hard time holding back a laugh at the end of saying "I'm having trouble with the radar sir"?
the scene gets better if you watch it a few times to truly absorb all the fun things such as -the dude from the very start doing all the noises like, FROM THE START - the raspberry is a reward you can get for shit movies, so basically since we KNOW in universe they are making the movie spaceballs due to the joke about the instant cassettes this cuts into that, - the moment when the dude is almost slipping up and laughing
I'm Argentinean, and hence we saw the spanish version. And this scene was a really wtf is happening moment. I was dumbfounded. But still found it funty
I remember taking some friends to the cinema for a treat. We saw this, unfortunately. One girl faked period pain (she later admitted) Her boyfriend went with her out of solidarity and the rest of us just kind of sauntered after them. I felt obliged to buy them all dinner as a consolation... All the missed oppertunities for humour, the mind boggles....
One of the greatest comedies ever made. When 95% of all the lines in the movie are quotable and hilarious, you got a classic.
OofmanRulz most Mel brooks films then! And Leslie Nielson! AIRPLANE

Micheal winslow did ALl of the sounds for the radar scene Even the radar going out :P you can see his mouth moving

1:41 You can see Dark Helmet nudging Colonel Sandurz to get him to notice the camera, causing him to back away. XD
So glad I'm not the only one who noticed that!!

How is it hard to miss? it was an intentional move. :P

he's great in police acdamy using a police megaphone to fake gun shots.
and just think how much money they saved in the sound effects budget just in the one scene alone

Really? I just figured the launched a jar out of something into a metal scale model and played it in slow motion.
To save time and budget, the directors simply hired a special effects team to do the Radar Jam scene for them.
@@Bruh-zx2mc is that so. Huh, the more you know

I absolutely love the subtle “your in my shot” nudge Helmet gives Sanders at the ending zooming tight in shot.
omg i never noticed it before. That was very intentional. He looks directly at the camera lol!
He gives Sandurz the nudge, and Sandurz turns to see the camera moving in and is like "Oh!" as he moves out of the way.
When I first saw this scene (the WHOLE scene) I swear I couldn't breath for a few minutes, I was laughing so hard
30 years later, still works
Same here
Michael Winslow kind of cracks up when he delivers the line at 1:06.

thats dark helmet making that mad sigh of anger
And he covers his mouth after the "raspberry" line.

yeah, kinda hard to translate it.
It works very well in Polish :D
