Chinese Malaysians are Malaysian no two ways about it. China Chinese are from China. We are from the same stock but we are not the same country. So there is no country we can go back to even if some parties can shout that all they want. Ini tanah air kita. Selamat Hari Merdeka
This govt should encourage & implement more muhibah family programs example tele matches live & aired in Astro to promote greater understanding & integration of all the races in malaysia.
It’s all to do with the mindset. I’m in my 60’s. My parents introduced me to the other ethnic groups before I turned 5. We had neighbours who were Malay, Indian, Sikh, Peranakan, Singhalese ; all living on the same street. We still remained a Malaysian Chinese family but we were free to visit each other’s homes and have meals together; totally respecting each other (free interaction and sharing celebration). So, it’s the parents and the environment which builds the mindset. Btw, I’m totally educated in English, but I can speak and understand BM and Mandarin.

Yes, I think most have adopted this mindset. Like Fu said, it really doesn't matter anymore. Honestly, as a shrinking minority, what can we do? Live and let live. There are will always be politicians who will make scapegoats using the non Malay community but give another 100 years, there may be very few non Malays left. So wonder who to blame at that time?

Thank you Mr. Khoo, very insightful episode. Two very intelligent and wise ladies, much more intelligent than most politicians we have to deal with in Malaysia. I think this episode is very insightful for the Malay community especially. I have close Chinese friends and open minded to discuss sensitive issue because of the close bond we have. I learn so much misconceptions on both sides. When I have conversations with friends who are Malay, majority of them would hold on to distrustful perspective over the Chinese community and when I talk to Chinese community will have similar point of view and point out that I am an exception among many which is not true. At the end of day, politicians care more about votes than us and play the hero which narrative fits them the most at the time... As we can see what's happening now.

Obviously ....... these 2 ladies are much-much cleverer, far sighted and understood the dynamic of the world order ..... unlike many idiotic policy makers who still stuck in their yesteryears' 2Rs issues!! The fact is everyone knows the main reason why there is no "real" cohesion and unity in this nation simply because of 2 tiers policy that this country is upholding since decades ago ....... As someone cited, how can you be so total "loyalty" when you are not treated equally, just and fair ..... Of course, there are lots of "resentment" and unsatisfaction no matter where you are if you are treated as such ..... Race and religious supremacy must not be how this country supposed to go forward. Too bad it was not discussed and mentioned during their discussion ...... perhaps, it is a sensitive issue to talk/discuss on podcast??
@@ChengEakChew That is why we must drive the chinese refugees back to china before they become security risk. China already sending communist army to singapore. We are not afraid of china kafirs.

Good one! Especially the second half of the discussion. Once we peek out from under our coconut shell, we suddenly see so much that we have missed out on. Rita & Fui are the under the radar voices that we should hear more from. Thanks for featuring them Chuang. Would love to hear more from them. Maybe together with Kishore Mahbubani! Different styles but same confidence in the SEA region. That conversation would set the room on fire!
Could try to get George Yeo too. Kishore and George are pretty much bias towards China but George has an interesting and fresh take when he analyze China from cultural point of view as he talks about paper or how he is a Christian but embrace Taoism philosophy. The West seems to find it fascinating on China's ability to sinicize or the sinicization of religions such as how they are able to bring Taosim, Confucianism, & Buddhism under one roof, "harmonizing" the 3 different religions. I couldn't remember the names off my head but there were many Christian organization who actually spent time & resources trying to study Confucianism and then compare each other religion while trying to find the common ground or common values. I suppose George is that one example of how he is already capable to be both a Christian & a Taoist at the same time. Personally for me it's quite easy such as Jesus teaching of turning the cheek, essentially it is no difference from the virtue of 忍(Endure, Tolerate, Put up with) or the proverb 忍一时风平浪静退一步海阔天空, the rough translation would be endurance & compromise will make the conflict much easier to resolve. Sadly this is something that doesn't seem to be common with Islamic teaching. Sure the Muslim preacher will go around talking about how they believe in Jesus or Moses but then their ultimate goal is to convert you because their follow up is to say your holy book has been corrupted whereas their holy book is the only one that is original, pure, & sacred. The intention is already impure & disingenuous which would surely lead to direct conflict with the West easily. In fact I have met Muslim preacher who believe Jesus turning the cheek is a stupid idea, which not only get on the nerve of believer & non-believer alike but it plays to the stereotype of how a Muslim is a Jihadi who is waiting to....Basically It is like 24/7 direct confrontation as oppose to finding common ground where they can avoid conflict and coexist. At the end of the day, Christianity & Islam are 2 sides of the same coin trying to convert the others, but Christian are more charismatic while Islam is an all out submission as Lee Kuan Yew put it. Speaking of which, it seems that the sinicization of Islam has always been on the agenda too as announced by Xi Jin Ping and many of its official. How that pans out is remain to be seen but I believe Malaysia's progress will be at the center stage of it. At the very least, China seem to be able to bring all different Muslim adversaries to come to the table. Saudi (Sunni) normalizing relation with Iran (Shia), Palestinian 14 different groups agree to put aside their infighting, Russia having to bite its tongue and sit together with Taliban.
I have no idea why some locals think the fact that Indo-chinese were assimilated back then was something to be proud of. Integration of language, culture and races in Malaysia is what we should be grateful for in the wave of globalization nowadays. We will learn and strengthen our bahasa kebangsaan no doubt, but don't tell us to forget our roots. Just imagine if one day the majority became minority, will they be willing to forget their roots? Its not right to do so isn't it?
Thats why i feel strongly One Nation school is important at the same time 3rd language must be compulsory to everyone be it mandarin/tamil. So other races will not forget their mother tongue (no more banana chinese) and Malay can understand mandarin/tamil too.
@@intanmaziah I believe you are coming from a positive stance and I respect that. But unless the right or far right politicians and their supporters are really sincere and honest in this ‘sekolah satu aliran’ idea by showing true acceptance and tolerance towards our diverseness, or else it is merely just a fabricated notion claiming to unite all races with hidden motives and objectives.
Chinese Indonesians like me are only less than 5% of the country's population, and were politically forced to throw away our identity by Soeharto. To be able to celebrate Chinese New Year again and show Chinese identity again (by law now we can use Chinese name as official name again, but mostly won't after 30 something years not having it), some unfortunate Chinese Indonesians had to "pay" very expensively with their lives in the May 1998 chaos. Singapore is a good example that also uses the integration path but quite successful in improving inter-race communication and understanding of each other's culture. Forcing English in their education had enabled all Singaporeans to communicate easily with each other regardless of race and original country.

Anyone who was at the mamak stalls watching Olympic badminton games will understand the deep love we have for our country despite all the differences and forces pulling us apart.
TQ for this great topic & discussion. At our spheres of influence, there are much being discussed and done to attempt to bridge, East/West Malaysians, religious believes, dialects differences, economics levels differences and others. It's our cultural obligation to cultivate harmony and peaceful integration within our community. We do pray and hope that our efforts can benefit our communities, country and the world. China unfortunately has an enormous population and with it enormous challenges to manage. China would love to be able to protect Malaysians, all Malaysians in fact if and whenever it can, I believe China will. Amen.
That is beyond absurd. China protects their citizens. In English, people who are ethnically Chinese and people who are citizens of China, are simply called _Chinese_ leading many people to confuse and conflate the two together. I don't know Mandarin, but I've been told, in Mandarin, they are two completely different words. So there is no confusion. China's governments (both of them) runs on Mandarin, not English.
Just like Malaysian Government will not protect the Malays in Christmas Island or in South Africa because why should we? A government of a Country protects its citizens, not everyone of a certain ethnicity living in some other places. This title does not make sense.
I am Malaysian first. Race and ethnicity should be put aside if we want to make this country great. We got to keep fostering every Malaysians from all walks of life to come together to face competitions from other nations and survive we must. We are sailing on this Malaysian ship and the new world order path we are sailing into is gonna be more stormy than our predecessors have gone through in the past 67 years. You can’t jump into the South China Sea and hope China’s navy ship would savage you. We are on our own the minute you’re born in Malaysia’s Bolehland and only as one ship, one Malaysia we can thrive. This is the most important message that our young generation must listen to and make their homeland in Sabah, Sarawak and the Peninsula proud to live in. May the success of this nation be with you. Happy Merdeka to all fellow Malaysians 😊
Please! May I add that Chinese navy won’t even save a Chinese National in South China Sea, let alone a Malaysian Chinese. The HSR project is destine to fail. I hope Anwar’s government monitors Indonesia’s high speed rail project’s profitability and stop the project ASAP! China’s domestic HSR project has been running at a loss after operating for so many years. Nepal’s second largest city’s airport was built with China’s instigation, without due consideration on pragmatic considerations for profitability and ability to repay the debt, at overly inflated price that China construction company charged. All these should serve as an alarm to projects/Loans extended to Malaysia.
Chinese BRI is the best thing for Malaysia, don‘t be short sighted. Global economic is going into a slow reccession after Covid, and China vs US trade war, but thats not blame it onto BRI projects. Not from Masia. I read quite some comments. I cant say much about general people's view, perception. But in general, the issues with Nationalism and nationalist is that they(people in power) tend to assume, non majority people, be it based on origin, religion, language, region etc. as a security concern and threat. And to make matters worse, those intelligence agency of many countries tend to have and facilities brutal, criminal alike abominable mentality people who are far far worse than animals and does disgusting stuff everywhere and writes plenty reports full of falsehood and their so called bulsh*it stuff in what they belive. And always sub-conciously keep in it in mind Politicians are not exactly good people. Plus those outsider govts(mainly those so called west bast**rds) and probably the countries bordering you country tries to fuel things up and destabilize your country. Or the govt simply fears those bordered countries or the people in question. So what im saying is, yeah your are right. Most people should go through the same life regardless of minority or majority. But the scenerio changes if a individual/group gain power or try to pursue power and it a minority group. Including but not limited to the minority group want some changes which "govt people " decides dosent align with them regardless of good or bad. Or perhaps simply beacuse the govt. view your or your group(minority) as potential power house. from little to unbearable losses will appear in one's / a groups life. It could be like- threats/warming, facing prejudice, misconception to "getting killed". But the worst part is, if they decides to toruture and not kill. one will be screaming to kill him/herself each day until he/dies dies. And you know what, in many cases you wont even know what you did for which they are doing this you. Seen many innocent people who had to face it. And at the moment of writing, many were still facing it around the globe unfortunately.
Backstory people forgot. The Malays never wanted the chinese to be citizens of Independent Malaysia but in the 1950's it was tbe height of the Malayan Emergency and chinese formed 90% of the CTs. Under the British "hearts and minds" program they forced the Sultans to give chinese citizenship in post independent Malaya to break the Malayan Communist Party else the chinese would keep on fighting with no stake in Malaya. The malays were never happy about it there why the concept of bumiputra was enshrined in the constitution between the new citizens and Malays.
The bumiputra constitution is to protect the weaker which is you at that time. The population ratio between Malays and Chinese were almost equal then. Besides, Chinese were well off and dominate the economy. Therefore, they need this policy to protect the bumiputra. But look at present day, Malays are already outnumber minority but they still need that protection and that policy and its advantage has been abused by their own crook politicians
Brian, you just missed because your cut off point is the 1950s. If you were to look back just slightly earlier. A few years, say 1948 ... What happened in 1947 - 48? What happens when Britain leaves, the people there set up a new country, but they don't give everybody citizenship? Like when half the population is left out in the cold, abandoned? Ooo ... everything would be fine ... yeah, these are people who don't learn, and repeat other people's mistakes. 🤦

@@henrymlim history repeats itself unfortunately. A stronger China will immediately reflect on local Chinese whether the Chinese want it or not. If China is weak like it was in the 60s, they will believe they can get away with murder which they did but if they do it now, it is a different story solely because they do not want to mess with a nation which has superior power economically or militarily. Being a south east Asian Chinese, in most of the Malays' or indonesians' eyes means you don't belong there according to them as they have claimed it all as evident in the riots of 1969. You may believe that you belong there but not in their eyes unfortunately.
China as a state sees Malaysian Chinese as good for their tourism industry. That's about it. For Malaysians, Chinese businesses take all the jobs, send projects back to Beijing offices, appoint their own nationals in Malaysia, leaving nothing for local businesses. Is this sustainable?
Until you have an alternative where you can compete like Thailand, Vietnam, or even Indonesia, talking about China’s business model is like pointless bantering. The least we can do is still negotiate for something with China because China still care about scoring positive political points unlike now where EU don’t want our palm oil, we should just shut down Proton because it will send jobs to China.

I’m thankful and happy with the current situation now in Malaysia. To my fellow Chinese Malaysians, let’s all move on from the “equality” ideology. As long as Chinese education, language, name and religious freedom are still legal, we should focus our life and conversation with other more important topic.
You only think for yourself...There are a lot of poor Chinese Malaysian folks out there. Remember Malaysia heath DG, he us actually a Chinese, but was given away because of poor. Move away from what if one is poor?
Your mindset is ok but also irresponsible for future generation. We are educated differently, we don’t riot for no reason but it doesn’t mean others won’t. If the country couldn’t develop & continue to grow, when finance is in shambles, riot ensued and the “master race” of this country are brought up with education of entitlement to its core where even the Quran focus on us vs them mentality, they will look for trouble with you or your children. So if we don’t help them to change (not imposing change on them, it has to come from them willingly), the problem will come back to bite us in the future. Change is difficult, comfort zone is easy. Life now in Malaysia now is pretty alright, it could be worse but it could turn into Bangladesh any moment where even their own people are not happy with the quota, cautionary tale for us.

Another very interesting topic and an eye opening facts. All Malaysians must listen and understand that we are falling behind. These two ladies are very knowledgeable and would say very interlectual. They have put their thoughts very clear and I personally feel Malaysia is heading for rough times if we do not act fast now. Malaysian should stop focusing on the 3Rs and start helping Malaysians surge forward in this world of challenges.
Chinese is probably focusing on the new Digital World which is extending into AI... English, Chinese, Maths and Science has been their strength from a long time
Respect to the two ladies. I wish to hear more from Asian Academics who actually understand things from and on the ground while are also aware of things from a Macro level to offer better insights of social issues from both perspectives. We don't have enough of these kind of conversations from Asians or even Africans from Africa. Such discussions are often dominated by narratives from Western Academics.
You can interpret what 'protection' is. What China did to the people of Palestine, I will term that 'protection'. Sometimes, it is what happens behind the scene that counts.
Don't veer away from the main topic. Palestine issues are too complicated for us not living in that region to understand. Note how the Arab countries are not stepping up to help them and welcome them into the country. The question is why...????
You are either a CCP lackey or been brainwashed by the CCP? I am a Malaysian Chinese who lived in China for more than 10 years. If you think CCP is such a benevolent government, then please, be my guest, emigrate to China
@@stevenliew2507 Have you heard of the concept Asabiah or in English "ourness"? The Arabs are sectarian and regionalistic after being control by multiple empire and caliphs. The main reason why they don't want to take more Palestinian is similar why Malaysia or other country won't accept them it's because it will disturb the ecosystem of a nation. I give you example of Jordan and Lebanon, Jordan has taken majority of Palestinian refugee since 1948 and the result is that almost half of the Jordanian population comes from Palestine or have connection to Palestine. Jordan almost lose it's monarchy after PLO plan a coup on the Jordanian monarchy with the help of Syrian regime that favours republicanism over compromise monarchy and hope that if Jordan becomes a republic that will push Jordan into war with IS. As for Lebanon? They do take Palestinian refugee similar like Jordan since 1948 until the 70s, but with the burden of war refugee coming into your country that basically collapse your economy not to mention that Lebanon is a multi-religious state that have Christians, Druze, Sunnis and Shias vying for political power. Not to mentioned IS invaded Lebanon like 2 times because how insecure IS on PLO activities at the boarder which cause them to invade and kill Sunnis and Shia in Lebanon in discriminately. Now IS has to face the boogieman that they created and serve them right for invading Lebanon. Tbh, PS-IS issue is not that complicated.. It's just that you decided not to care because of your religious bias. It's as simple as that.
Msian race based politics and policies has set back Msia by decades. China won't interfere with others internal affairs. But it will rescue the Chinese if it gets violent, eg in 1960s China sent many ships to repatriate Indonesian Chinese back to China. China built a kampung Bali in China for the Indo Chinese. Google it, this is well documented.
That is good. #MalaysianChinese should never provoke malays to run amok (which hardly since the malays are peaceful and tolerance muslims) or else China will have trouble to sent ships.

#China has more concerns with her domestic problems than to think other chinese in other countries all over the world. Why should it matters what happen outside the mainland. Even more chinese nationals seek refuge illegally in #Malaysia to have better living. In general chinese everywhere dont really care about politics as long as they can peaceful survive untouch. Unlike #MalaysianChinese who blame politic and government for being "malay' even their livelihood are untouched. Their Kiasu mentality must stopped. As a citizen, you MUST have that sense of belonging to fight defend and die for that country whether you are the minority or the slave. Whether the harm cause by China or India or anywhere. Then can you only announced your loyalty as true Malaysian.

@@viralcelebs5064 I feel you. My family been through something similar. My late father was previously in the civil service and he work there for over a decade. He has constantly given his best for his job. He speaks, read and write Malay fluently, but the issue was he was constantly being instructed by his superiors to teach and pass down the job knowledge to new Malay recruits. Over time, he starts to notice he was always doing the same job and hardly gets any promotion, while the new recruits he was assign to guide was later promoted so much faster and has since became his superior. Because his salary hardly increase without promotions, we were so desperate when the time has come when my sister needed to further her education in university. We sold our house just to pay for my sister's university education, and move out to start renting places for our family to stay for over another decade without a home. I still remember that day we sold our only home, my mum was in tears. On that day, i remember my dad told us, "Never Again". He then left the civil service, and re-started as a low level bell boy in a 5 star hotel. His work ethics never changed, and he work hard while studying part time for a Hotel management degree, and work all his was up to eventually be a GM of another 5 star hotel and we then had enough to buy a new property for our family which we can call home again. During his struggle, i remembered the countless times he told our family at this same "kiasu" stereotypes or racial slurs directed at him when he was busting his ass to work his way up the hotel management while studying part time for his degree. None of his colleagues or friends know about his goals of wanting to buy a home, of wanting enough money to send his children to university, of not letting down my mother again. He just kept working hard. My point is, the people that always call us slurs such as being "kiasu", are the once who are usually less hardworking or less successful in their own life. We can even see, Malaysians calling Singaporeans "Kiasu", but we never read or heard of Japanese or Taiwanese giving similar stereotypes to Singaporeans. Similar to the West, the middle class calling the rich "FILTHY Rich" when it was their hard work that took them to success. There is always some negativity when someone works hard to eventually be successful. Here we are today, with so many slurs being thrown at us such as "Pendatang" or "Type C" or whatever. Worst, we are now even "educated" as to what being a "true" Malaysian is. The irony!! All I can say is the more successful you get, the more enemies you make. Accept it and move on.
If it wasn't for the Chinese Malaysians, we will end up producing maids for the world, similar to what is happening in Indonesia and The Philippines. Maybe it is their "kiasu" characteristics that saved Malaysia economically. Let's be a little more grateful.
@@tenwritersscreen5511 really? All I can say is that you have grossly underestimated the greedy and corrupted CCP regime. The US has virtually stopped China from advancing their claims on South China Sea, Malaysia is indeed fortunate that Philippines have a new president just in time, China is facing resistance on Spratly islands, otherwise the CCP coastguard would have sail to Malaysia water and claimed it is theirs.
Chinese will always get rich, and there is no doubt about that. Most of Chinese will succeed wherever they go, no matter where they originally from, China, Taiwan, H.K or Singapore. Same with China which will dominate the world sooner or later. And Chinese culture will always survived and grow, just like last few thousand years. Thanks for your frankness. One point I note is that you mentioned that the Chinese group who only converses in their mother tongue live in their own bubble, and separate from the rest of us. This is probably the same for the Malays. And maybe that is why we have such a different worldview. On this point, we need to communicate better to understand each other better. We have to learn better. Know your neighbours, and learn to appreciate their difference.
What you say is true but it was by design! UMNO wanted each race to live in its own enclave like people in Lebanon and they find that an easier way to handle the country!
As a Malaysian living for half my life in HK, this podcast is very informative and agree with 90% of what is said except the part on Taiwan and HK is not particularly nuanced, unlike the previous discussion of Chinese in Malaysia. It’s very focused on the megatrends and economic inevitability but doesn’t highlight the vitality of civil society in Taiwan and loss of freedoms of speech and representation and direction in HK. A discussion like this podcast wouldn’t be carried out with a lot of overt or self censorship in many countries and I think it’s something that many Malaysians take for granted.
UK literally went after people posting on social media even when they are overseas. They would have extradite Elon Musk if they could. People who still harp on freedom of speech just seem ignorant or clueless about the global trend on technology & geopolitics. Like are you not seeing what happen in Gaza-Israel that has shattered the illusion of freedom of speech? It’s a matter of national interest.
In my observation Western influence in Hong Kong has brought some good ideas but really exported brainrot in the form of liberalism, self hate, and white worship. Malaysian Chinese are realistic the position they are facing and managing as best as they can to survive. They have choice and choices including migrating to other countries to live. Little did a lot of Malaysians are aware that there are many Malays actually chose to take up Australian citizenship. Singapore and China are also their options. As to whether China will come to protect Malaysian Chinese, that will evolve and in the Chinese Constitution it mentioned that as long as you are " Chinese " you have rights including to take up Chinese Citizenship. Protection will definitely the implied condition too.
When racial problems broke out in the Solomon Islands between the natives and the Solomon Chinese who are local citizens, the CCP Govt. send ships to repatiate them although they were not citizens of China! This gave the impression that China today will intervene if the lives of Chinese are threatened in any way,not withstanding they are local nationals! This is a new development as the CCP Govt. in the past chose to look the other way when Suharto's army masacred many local Chinese in Indonesia during the army crackdown on Communists!

thank you for this podcast. it is actually way beyond what an ordinary Malaysian folk/youngling would have known. for those who are in their Gen X or Y, yes, everyone is operating to survive while the bigger forces in the background was setting the tunes! it is quite mind blowing to predict/imagine what happens next while the climate and geopolitical spheres (and perhaps the digital innovations) are posing. China being so premonitionistic can be an astonishing fact but is proven by the changes where only eyes can see at the tip of an iceberg. reflecting back at the grassroot level and the local sphere, many are perhaps turning a blind eye (because of more pressing living matters), or unaware of the narratives that are in play. Pragmaticism seemed to overrule the sense of cohesion at the social level, as well as the economic polarity. Yet, as individuals, i believe and hope Malaysians can and will have a more open-minded attitude towards sensitive issues. We should be riding the wave of change, instead of creating the ripples for an impending storm that may devastate a little island! Thanks again for lots of insights, many of which are quite far fetched for a lot of us :) thanks John (hope i get the host's name right) very much for sharing!

The problems Malaysia facing are very complex. One of the main issues is religion. Although Malaysia claimed itself as secular, deep beneath is the Muslim majority cannot accept other religion beliefs in this country. The religion itself is the stumbling block to have a united country which prevent all races to mingle together. The problem with Islam is it cannot accept other religions which translate to not accepting other cultures. Unless you denounce your religion and willing to convert to becoming Muslim. So its a perennial issue. As long as the Muslims are not open to other religions, Malaysia will remain stagnant in terms of interracial and cultural assimilation.

I am a Malaysian Chinese, my culture is Buddhism and confusionism. As a Buddhist, I practiced positivities as a way of life meaning less hatred and accept peaceful interactions among my neighbours of other races and to respect the government of the day on their policies base on our national constitutions. Confusionism in us is to respect the elders and our ancestors all the way from mainland China. But I see the most Chinese in Malaysia has lost that culture due to their new culture like Christianity. I believe religion makes the difference in our Chinese community in China. If you noticed for example, the Prime Minister recently made a decision of sending Palestinian people to Malaysia for medical treatment, that was critism among the Chinese and these Chinese are mostly Christians. This is because Christianity has western influence through their churches. But for me as a Buddhist, I supported the PM base on humanitarian grounds because Buddhist teaches us to be compassionate to fellow human beings. This is just one example, another is most Chinese Christians don't like mainland China and the reason is Chinese government is authocratic to them basing on the western influence. I might be wrong but this is what I see it.
Well this is true, as a Malay I do observe that most problem and critical towards government policies are Christians. Even so it really depends on which church they come from, I see no problem from the Catholics nor the Methodist but I do see a lot of problem coming from Anglican or worst Evangelical Church. The later is more crypto-Z and they never transparent of their opinion on the Palestinian until you play dumb or look as secular Malay that didn't care about religion for them to open up about their revisionist history and justification of atrocities in Palestine. In some sense you are right, but the problem is that most Malay politician fail to differentiate or acknowledge how diverse is Chinese community is. The most friendliest Chinese that I met is Buddhist and was my roommate in junior college. I do think that you are correct in your assessment.
Indonesia riots in 1998, China didn't do anything. So why should they protect overseas Chinese? They are pragmatist. They will take care of their own first unless threats against their overseas assets.

china has a non interventionism policy. it could only intervene when its citizens are concerned. china has denounced dual citizenship long ago, due to this exact reason somewhat. but chinese embassy suring that time already issued warning for targeted people to leave. they even accepted ethnic chinese indonesian and anyone who claimed to be chinese even without passport to board the rescue vessels. at the same time, kmt govt spread lies about the rescue as cpc propaganda and they would be jailed after reaching the mainland. history is a good teacher. and thousands of years of history is a profound sage. learn from it.
You are wrong. China give stern warning to indo, and if they don't stop, ship will be sent to evacuate Indo Chinese. The record is in China foreign diplomatic affair. Sometimes they need a strong valid reason, as they try to adhere to not interfering in other country affair before Taiwan is unified. After this is accomplished, then u will sense how u r part of their own.
Tiny little Singapore, since LKY time, has great clout in the world and regional geopolitical matters. While Malaysia, past and present, at federal and state leadership don’t have any foresights, and have been busy with domestic politics and issues and happily practicing graft and corruption for personal gains.
Anwar & Mahathir can actually be considered someone of the same calibre but in different domain, LkY is seen as a statesman protecting the interest of Singaporean, Asian, & subsequently Chinese hence the West like to look to them to talk about Issue in China. Whereas Mahathir & Anwar is on the domain of Islamic world and they seem lesser of an Asian leader but a Muslim one because Islam always overshadow any topic they touches on. Besides that, Mahathir or Anwar didn’t do much in leading the Islamic world, in fact Professor Tajudin argue that the time Anwar spent in prison for more than 10 years due to Mahathir is time wasted which has allowed PAS to take the driver seat. Hence they would seem less capable when compare to Lee Kuan Yew who always try to steer its country into a diplomacy of consistency because they are a small nation that require trust to function or investor would fled. Basically Singapore has become the light for China when they are in turmoil such as the visit by Deng Xiao Ping to Singapore where many lessons were brought back to China. What have the Islamic world learn from Malaysia? Nothing. In fact, it is almost like Malaysia existence is to prove Islamic value are unfair in essence where Kafir value are brought to life in Bumiputera terms while Jizya is apparent from the quota system ranging from university to companies 30% hire. However this also prove China capability as a 2000years capitalist society as imply by the Ali Baba term. I wonder if there is any lesson we can derived from the rich history between Malaysia & China to reshape and fix the world. Whether Western led world order is unsustainable but the Malaysia China one where one is seen as host while the other is seen as guest. As long as we agree that every nation in the world need to retain its 70% “original” population so that they don’t always have to fight the question of impending existential threat, I am sure once they feel secured & relief mentally, it would not be difficult after for the local populace to come up with an impartial policy that see everyone as equal citizen (eg without the need for Bumiputera), thus marrying the best of both world from governance in the West & the East. This is much better than play pretend that we are one people when we are obviously not. I thought we are in the age of global village? Confuciunism has the idea of 天下大同Great unity where we seek commanality but at the same time remain different, 同中求異 異中求同. Unity in diversity.

Part 2 please... This is a very intriguing agenda & relevant info to new generations how current Geopolitics impacts us all
I have no idea why some locals think the fact that Indo-chinese were assimilated back then was something to be proud of.

China continues to grow strong and has already protected the global Chinese community from discrimination and disrespect.
It's actually a double-edged sword.
Anyone who was at the mamak stalls watching Olympic badminton games will understand the deep love we have for our country despite all the differences and forces pulling us apart.
We built friendship with China not because we want protection. Just bussiness and friendship. Do not expect more.

Half-correct. Malays dont care who become citizens. It was the equality rights that was not agreed as native of the land.
The bumiputra constitution is to protect the weaker which is you at that time. The population ratio between Malays and Chinese were almost equal then. Besides, Chinese were well off and dominate the economy. Therefore, they need this policy to protect the bumiputra.
Very informative! Thank you 🙏 ❤👍
You can interpret what 'protection' is.

Interesting talk .
CHINA government will never strain her 'hundred years' relation with MALAYSIAN government for some bickering #MalaysianChinese. Period.
@@tenwritersscreen5511 really? All I can say is that you have grossly underestimated the greedy and corrupted CCP regime.

Same with China which will dominate the world sooner or later. And Chinese culture will always survived and grow, just like last few thousand years.

This is a common mis-perception, if you're well read and travel enough then you will see minorities thriving due to the circumstances given, Chinese in South East Asia, Jews in Europe and America, Indians in Africa

So why many chinese mainland are fleeing china and illegally take refuge everywhere in the world including malaysia.
When racial problems broke out in the Solomon Islands between the natives and the Solomon Chinese who are local citizens, the CCP Govt. send ships to repatiate them although they were not citizens of China! thank you for this podcast. it is actually way beyond what an ordinary Malaysian folk/youngling would have known. for those who are in their Gen X or Y, yes, everyone is operating to survive while the bigger forces in the background was setting the tunes! it is quite mind blowing to predict/imagine what happens next while the climate and geopolitical spheres (and perhaps the digital innovations) are posing.

As long as there is benefits everybody is a family! ❤
