I am from MELAKA, Malaysia.
Since 15th century China already trade With Melaka. They never conquered us, only trade. BUT the west Portuguese, English and Dutch came with cannons to conquer us and said we belong to them. They each stayed for years.
Actually China has been trading with this region for thousands of years. If you are a history buff you will have to refer to the chinese records to know about this region historic past. Since Melaka was founded only in 1402, a chinese admiral, a trade envoy started to visit Melaka in 1403, a year after its establishment.
Once the Europeans managed to find their way to this region, they started to invade the kingdoms. Except for Siam, all kingdoms in south east asia were conquered by the Europeans.. portuguese, spanish, dutch, french, english, american for more than 400 hundred years.
For centuries, not years.
Ha, ha, ha - the European "founded" Melaka and many other parts of the world. Before them, Melaka in the Malay peninsula was lost, unknown, non-existent (to who, I wonder?}

Orville Schell is completely condescending when he speaks of China and Asia overall. He thinks with a 20th century mindset and is ill prepared for dealing with China in the 21st century. He is a caricature of the hot-headed American who acts before he thinks. A complete neocon who is overly confident of America's capabilities because our last wars have been victories against Iraq and Afghanistan. He should review America's massive failures in Asia during the Vietnam and Korean conflicts. I'm heartened to hear diplomats like Mr. Mahbubani who are much calmer and thoughtful in their speech. China is on the rise and there's not much America or the West can do about it.

Kishore Mabubani is one of the best most insightful geopolitical realist analyst. He has been predicting most of the events unfolding today.

Also many of the suggestions he made would have solved many of the issues today that he identified. So I also agree he is also one of the best modern day visionary.

Visionary is someone who knows where humanity "has to be going" like Confucius who 2,500 years ago said that, When the perfect order prevails, the world is like a home shared by all. Virtuous and capable people are elected to public offices; trust and peace are the maxims of living among the people..."
The closest thing Kishore has said is that we are all on one ship and the ship has no captain. I have not heard him to say, what steps humanity has to take, to have a world governing system to avoid wars and bloodshed. And to guide humanity out of collective danger it is facing.

@@TheVafa95 The analogy he shared about the planet being a ship and we being all passengers in different cabins is from his book, I think "The Great convergence" where he goes deeper into the great dilemmas humanity now face. The idea of putting our differences aside and ignoring our selfish tendencies as if we don't learn to work together we will end together. His other titles: "Has China Won" and the very short but profound and in my opinion prophetic "Has the West Lost it" are extremely good as they basically predicted the issues that we face today and his suggestions on how these issues could have been avoided. It is very interesting to watch the two side of the arguments on the number of issues between US and China. I have to say I support totally on Kishore's point of views. Orville's views towards China are very bias, unfriendly and non rational. China has a continues 5000 years of history while US only has a total history under 300 years, powerful US in many aspects yes but that does not mean the US is wise in world issues. US is the world leader up to now so the US thinks as a result of that it can order, lecture or dictate whatever you want to call it to China. Its like you are a youth in front of your grandpa then all of sudden you start to lecture and order your grandpa to do things.
US basically cannot and will not tolerate China to surpass the US in every way, whether its economic, military or political influence on the world stage, US will use every effort to bring China down from its prosperity whether it is right or wrong. What is wrong with China having a powerful military capabilities? China is doing so is to prevent the history from repeat, more than 100 years ago in the Qing Dynasty it had no strong arm forces therefore the unfortunate Opium War fell on China and worse of all Japanese attacked China and slaughtered many millions of ordinary Chinese people. Today China is the second largest economy in the world if China has no strong military today to protect its economy do you think China still standing here? The US had already destroyed China. If you say China threatened the world peace then tell me which country has China attacked yet? Orville said China is exercising hegemony over South East countries over territory claims and yet China had restrained itself from using military forces not like The US taking Texas from Mexico by force.
