I was known back then in my local arcade for beating the game with one token. How'd I did this? Well the arcade cabinet of our House of the Dead (1 , 2 , and 3) can be wired and those times security cams weren't good to be depended on. Since the thing below the box can be opened (because of it not having a lock) and you can just open the thing and just keep putting the token and take it back by that process. Damn those were times I literally was ripping off the place but they didn't cared about it tho for some reason even if tho I got caught like 5 times. They're still running until now.
@Stefano Pavone You could do the same trick with a fishing wire . If you folded the edge correctly you could insert it in the coin slot and get infinite tokens. Though you had to be discreet in order not to get caught. Eg if the mal owner saw 99 credits you were screwed.
When I was a kid my parents split up, so when I would go see my father he would take me to the movie theater's which had a arcade inside. Our favorite game was House of the Dead 2.

Yes! Someone else that actually knows Ninja Assault and Vampire Night! Two of Namco’s most underrated series. I love Time Crisis as well. 2 is my favorite of that series
I remember playing these games a lot as roller rinks when I was a kid, me and my friend would play it every time we went and we spent all of our tokens to beat it
I remember back when I was in elementary school (3th and 4th grade) my mother would go to the mall every Saturday and I would go with her. I would save up all my quarters and we would go to the arcade in the mall and we would play these shooting games together. Our favorites were Area 51, Aliens 3, and this one. Good times. Was something magical about going to the arcade.
I've managed to flawless the Empress in House of the Dead 4. The key is to remember that only the head takes damage so you need to make sure you aren't wasting your ammo with body shots when she is above or on the side of the train. The blue reticle on the monochromatic blue model kinda makes it harder to see where her actual hurtbox is so it's really easy to waste ammo with body shots without even realizing it. She follows the same route and attack pattern each time though so with some memorization you should be able to lead your shots when she goes behind one of the doors which blocks her hitbox and hit her as she becomes vulnerable again instead of wasting ammo and not having enough time to reload.
A shame it hasn't been ported out, because Scarlet Dawn is actually super fun in the arcade cabinet. Introduces new weapons you have limited ammo for at the start of each stage and can switch out to at any time.
It was pretty cool how the arcade cabinets for 1 - 4 had different gun plastic models (with reload options) modeling the weapons used ingame, HOTD1 had a small pistol, HOTD2 had a bigger pistol closer to a revolver, HOTD3 had the pump shotgun and HOTD4 had the Uzi/Ingram type gun.
I remember playing an original HOTD3 cabinet, and you actually had to reload it; rather than pointing outside the screen, like the last games, you had to pull back the handle. It was really unique, and I personally have never seen anything like that in any other arcade cabinet.
I remember being a kid looking for all the emulators of these shooters. Took me a while but now I can *somewhat* play HoTD4 on PC, which brought a tear to my eyes
I remember back when I was a young tween a Friend and I had a blast playing House of the Dead 4 in an arcade. We ended up spending about $50 and made it all the way to about the 4th level. It may not have been the greatest game in the series but that was one memory I'm not going to forget anytime soon.
"I'll probably do a video on House of the Dead Overkill in the future." That's got me veeeeery interested. The game's dialogue hit me like an ice cream truck barreling down the road.
Alot of people here in Australia pronounce it that way. I know I did as a kid, until I 1st saw the bit in sonic 3 where it Sega "SAY GAH" and since then I've said it that way. And yeah, I kinda still cringe when I hear other Aussies say it "see gah" >.
It's like how some Americans pronounce it as 'Seh Gah'. Everyone has heard the word pronounced in various Sega games, and yet they still don't pronounce it correctly. It baffles the mind.
The OG 1996 game will still be my most fav, will never forget Hangedman's iconic sinister "nobody leaves here alive" line as he takes away Sophie and his batty giant vampire like figure, ability to commands bats to attack you, nearly throwing you down from the roof and throwing two scientists to their deaths cold heartedly and the mansion itself the blood near the entrance, a true horror game gem! With the music off its even scarier the zombie sounds, machine sounds, death sounds and more all more sinister and horror vibe.
Having recently watched JoJo's, I can't help but notice how similar The Lovers look in this game compared to Araki's rendition. Also, Chariot seems ridiculously similar as well - right down to losing their armour. I'm not going crazy, am I?
the first house of the dead was literally my childhood, I remember playing it in secret on my parents shitty computer and finishing it over and over again. The different sound effects and voice lines are forever imbedded into my mind.
I remember when Sega Gameworks still existed and me and my buddy beat HOTD 2 opening dayh in one go with only like 8 lives each. We had a crowd around us by the end and yes, people did applaud when we finally beat it. I fucking miss OG arcades, why did Sega have to fuck up so hard...
@@jefftakesdscakes30 They shut down all the Gameworks arcades in the late 2000's. They should have at least kept open the ones in New York, LA, Philly, and Orlando.
Patali while I agree with Goldman trying to restore the "Life Cylce", but turning everyone or creating a genetically biohazard hostile creatures/mutants(or in this case, zombies) isnt really helping the eco system. But hey, its just a video game
I remember way back in like 2006 when I was 15 me and a group of friends that I met on a cruise all chipped in and we ended up beating HOTD2, HOTD4, and Area 51/Maximum Force. Between the four of us we spent a lot less individually by essentially “passing the stick”. I actually remember that being the first time seeing a HOTD4 cabinet.
Just played first two games in an arcade/videogame museum and had to go and watch stuff about them as soon as I got back home because they were so fun. Never heard of them before today
My favorite light gun series , a mix of virtua cop and an Italian zombie movie. My favorites are 2 and 3. I have the Wii port of 2 and 3 , it's a great port. Love these games
It's so great to see this series being talked about today. Such a fun game this is. Also, Sega needs to stop playing around and give us what we really want. An ACTUAL good remaster of HOTD1 for the PC with online co-op.
I actually played the third one on arcade, and while it was wasn't easy it was rare to see a shotgun shooter in an arcade, and let me tell you reloading with a working pump action on the gun was one of the most satisfying gaming experiences I have ever encountered.
It's.... it's okay man, it's a reversible condition... just listen to Pink Floyd and Godspeed You Black Emperor enough and the wallet chain will go away naturally over time
as a really young kid I remember playing HoTD 4 at an arcade and I can't believe this game actually has a series with an actual story, though I was too young to make it to one boss
House Of The Dead 2 & 3 on the Wii was actually my introduction to the series. The difference between these versions, aside from how you aim, is the amount of extra content outside the main game, I think. 2 has two challenge modes. One tests certain aspects of your shooting abilities at three different difficulties each, and the other is a time attack against bosses. On top o' that, there's two ways to play the main game. Arcade is just the main game as is, but Original Mode lets you equip all sorts of different bonuses and extras such as a larger magazine, damages booster, shoot the UFO, and even weapons like a double-barrel shotgun, grenade launcher, and a bass lure launcher. 3 has only two unlockable main game modes, but they make the game way more replayable: Time attack takes you through the whole on a short time limit, but you can increase it by playing skillfully and hunting for bonuses, and Extreme mode locks you in solo, makes enemies tougher, and your shotgun is essentially a rifle now (in other words, AIM CAREFULLY), but it gives you a faster reload, and a melee attack.
If anybody has the chance to play House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn do it, the game is super fun in arcade and it is as violent if not even more than previous games, you are set against bigger hordes compared to previous HOTD, and you have to mow them down with machine guns and rocket launchers. Good times.
I remember like it was today the place where my parents used to go on vacation when I was 12 and that little obscure bar that had this game in its corner. I used to spend half my days there playing that game and was quickly able to beat it with one coin only. I became so well known for that that there was an audience of 9-12 kids and teens around me watching how I played and finished the game with that one coin. Oh the good times and epic game :D
Just a note here regarding the reference to Shatner and Flying High. Flying High was the AU and NZ title of Airplane! In the context of the video it refers to Airplane II: The Sequel. That should make it easier to find
Those were two of my favorite Arcades....mainly because I could actually make some headway in them. Both HoTD and Area51 are way easier than their sequels and thus, I could get a lot more enjoyment per quarter.
Area 51! In elementary school my mom and I would go to the arcade in the mall almost every Saturday and that's the one we played the most (in addition to Aliens 3 and the game in the video). "Entering hanger sector 1-8." "Check your targets people." "We-we-we we copy!" "RELOAD. RELOAD."
Used to go to the mall arcade when I was a kid every Friday where they had Time Crisis 2, Crisis Zone, and The House of the Dead 1. These games were such a blast to play. I played these games so many times I somehow managed to be able to play through all 3 in a row without getting hit once in any of them. Literally memorized everything in each game. I really do miss these arcade classics. Thanks for the nostalgia trip lol
15:35 actually if you're doing really well in the game and you haven't taken damage in a while, the Tower will start attacking with 2 heads at a time. The Magician increases in difficulty if you're doing well too, getting faster and faster and once his little after-image movements glow white instead of red then you know he's at max speed and "I want you to put more money in."-mode.
Everytime I hear the RUOOOORGHH SFX in any videogame or movie all that springs to mind is The Tower from HOT2. This entire series was my introduction to videogames and I have nothing but the utmost respect and love for it. Thanks for the amazing video.

James. Go and prevent the confusion in the city.
This game was so good. I miss the old ones.
But my preferred arcade shooter was Lost World Jurassic Park
That was great too, except when some nuggets would sling globs of shit at you as projectiles; dunno why that fucked me up
It was pretty cool how the arcade cabinets for 1 - 4 had different gun plastic models (with reload options) modeling the weapons used ingame, HOTD1 had a small pistol, HOTD2 had a bigger pistol closer to a revolver, HOTD3 had the pump shotgun and HOTD4 had the Uzi/Ingram type gun.
"I'll probably do a video on House of the Dead Overkill in the future."
That's got me veeeeery interested. The game's dialogue hit me like an ice cream truck barreling down the road.
Overkill reminds me of Zombieland
When a Sega game loads up: "SAY GAH"
Gman: "See ga"
Alot of people here in Australia pronounce it that way. I know I did as a kid, until I 1st saw the bit in sonic 3 where it Sega "SAY GAH" and since then I've said it that way. And yeah, I kinda still cringe when I hear other Aussies say it "see gah" >.
see ga
Funny thing is in Italy "Say Gah" means Wank. Yep.
It's like how some Americans pronounce it as 'Seh Gah'. Everyone has heard the word pronounced in various Sega games, and yet they still don't pronounce it correctly. It baffles the mind.
Seh gah in Scotland too
The OG 1996 game will still be my most fav, will never forget Hangedman's iconic sinister "nobody leaves here alive" line as he takes away Sophie and his batty giant vampire like figure, ability to commands bats to attack you, nearly throwing you down from the roof and throwing two scientists to their deaths cold heartedly and the mansion itself the blood near the entrance, a true horror game gem! With the music off its even scarier the zombie sounds, machine sounds, death sounds and more all more sinister and horror vibe.
My favorite line from HOTD 2's on the last level: "It's like they're inviting me in!"
Used to play this at the Arcade, it's cool you reviewing it. Now I'm going to watch the video, thanks for the video
Having recently watched JoJo's, I can't help but notice how similar The Lovers look in this game compared to Araki's rendition. Also, Chariot seems ridiculously similar as well - right down to losing their armour.
I'm not going crazy, am I?
There are plenty of japanese games with references to jojo so it's pretty possible that might be the actual intent
João Loução or Jojo referencing them.
Is ThAT a JoJo REfEreNce?!

I mean, all of the bosses in the game are based on the tarot cards, which also were stands are based on
the first house of the dead was literally my childhood, I remember playing it in secret on my parents shitty computer and finishing it over and over again.

I fucking miss OG arcades, why did Sega have to fuck up so hard...
damn, that feeling must be amazing, nothing feels like flexing your skills on strangers in person
Wdym screw up
@@jefftakesdscakes30 They shut down all the Gameworks arcades in the late 2000's. They should have at least kept open the ones in New York, LA, Philly, and Orlando.

Goldman is simultaneously the most heinous, yet the most relatable villain in gaming history, if not all of fiction

Same, right up with Time Crisis. Most favorite is 1 though I'd love to give 2 another chance again.
The wii port is great, has a lot of extra challenges. Cool bonus.
It's so great to see this series being talked about today. Such a fun game this is.
Also, Sega needs to stop playing around and give us what we really want. An ACTUAL good remaster of HOTD1 for the PC with online co-op.
where's Overkill & Scarlet ? Scarlet has a wind blower to your face to simulate 4D and runs on Unreal 4 it's neat !
Overkill was not a arcade game, its a console game
@@oreofoxgamerx6028 yeah but overkill was still very good. Also kinda disappointed that he didn’t talk about scarlet.
I actually played the third one on arcade, and while it was wasn't easy it was rare to see a shotgun shooter in an arcade, and let me tell you reloading with a working pump action on the gun was one of the most satisfying gaming experiences I have ever encountered.
I remember playing one of these at a retro arcade, me and my buddy had a blast, We wouldn't stop shooting survivors though...

House of the Dead 3 will always hold a special place in my heart, since I played that on the Wii with my parents, when I was young.
"You almost feel like you could have an epileptic seizure sometimes."
Gee, I wonder why that is.

You can turn that off though.

Holy smokes you brought up The Secret World of Alex Mack..where's the youtube love button....dammit
as a really young kid I remember playing HoTD 4 at an arcade and I can't believe this game actually has a series with an actual story, though I was too young to make it to one boss
Good times.
I had a chance to do so in Florida a couple of months ago, but ended up passing on it. I regret not playing it :(
wish they would release it as a playstation vr game
shutcho goofy ass! its even worse than overkill even if it got some of the best graphics ever
arcades are basically all gone here, so... gonna wait for that crappy conversion, I guess...

The "r-re-re-re-r-re-relo-re-reload" was the soundtrack to me.
i remember playing the hell out of this one and "Area 51" good times..
"Entering hanger sector 1-8." "Check your targets people." "We-we-we we copy!"
"RELOAD. RELOAD."
One time at a friend's birthday all the machines were free. So me and a friend beat Area 51. It was epic
The fedora bit gave me a good laugh
Did he say a “fleshlight” zombie?
Mind that he won’t cease in saying “blaod”
We all heard it.
He could have meant Flashlight zombie ?
😂😂😂😂
I now beat this game in a arcade few day back. First time by myself then with my friend. And I plan to play the game again 10/10
I did had an epileptic seizure thanks to this game and you know what? I REGRET NOTHING!
I remember playing house of the dead 3 in the bowling alleys arcade with my mum when I was like 6?
Good times
I don’t know what it is about the 4th game, but I absolutely loved that first level.
That Explains Why He Wasnt Going Red Or Blue When He Moved
There was never any black curtain around this machine here in the US; at any arcade I ever went to. It was there for all to see.
Everytime I hear the RUOOOORGHH SFX in any videogame or movie all that springs to mind is The Tower from HOT2.
This entire series was my introduction to videogames and I have nothing but the utmost respect and love for it. Thanks for the amazing video.
This series gave me my first nightmares as a kid lmao
Same here it was always the zombies with open shirts I’d have nightmares of
We didnt have a curtain around the arcade machine in north america, we just played that ish raw.
This is a classic tho have many memories and lost tokens playing dis
Neither did we in sweden. Loved these games as a kid!
I use to play this with my dad when I was 6-8 years old.
Dude i remember playing both House of The Deads in the arcades with my dad. Then playing the shit out of House of The Dead 2 on the Wii with him, this video was such a blast of nostalgia for me.
I looooved how many little secrets there were in HotD2. Like shooting a cat that appears or the boots of cars to find hidden weapons inside.
I remember spending a lot of money on House of the Dead 4 arcade cabinet, hah.. Never regretted it
Playing the very first THOTD is a total nostalgia for me. Also one of the first (and few) games I played in coop :)
God that intro was magnificent
what really spooked me with those freddy looking zombies is when before they appear a toddler’s voice can be heard whispering in the background
