You forgot that 4th wall mention for the torture scene. If you rapidly smash circle the way I did, your arm probably hurt. Then you get a codec call where Snake mentions his arm hurting. They tell you to place the controller on your arm and they make it vibrate. Genius.
Seems the PC port has few of it's stories during the production phase. I was so blown away by MGS JUST OFF THE DEMO DISC! Played the dam demo over and over for at least 4-5 hours straight. It’s just as you described it: cinematic.
It's hard to describe what it felt like playing this back in the day, so unique and having played all the other ones, nothing will beat that first experience as a kid.
For real. Figuring out Meryl’s codec on the back of the case. Beating mantis by switching ports. Mgs along with the ff7,8,9 and some of the survival horror games made me spend the most time playing my ps1 even more than my other consoles at the time like the snes sega. The maturity in gaming was just unmatched at that time. It’s hard to understand if you weren’t there at the right age.
Backtracking aside, this game is an amazing experience. The attention to detail is crazy good. The fact that I can use Wolf's handkerchief to not get attacked by her dogs, using a cigarette to see lasers, and etc. Replaying this now, I'm still as amazed as I was when I was a kid.
As someone who despises the way The Twin Snakes turned what was otherwise a pretty grounded story into over-the-top Looney Toons nonsense, I have to admit that is a pretty good way to interpret the game as head canon (nothing in the game supports it unfortunately) It won't change my stance on the game, but thinking about it through this interpretation, I can't help but laugh at the idea of Hal's perception of Snake. LOL, good job there.
I always saw Twin Snakes either as the MOVIE Adaptation of the Events of MGS1 that Natasha wrote as a Novel of what happened after the Game or Raiden's VR Version of Shadow Moses that he did since Canon-wise he "Experienced" those events but this being Otacon's interpretation also works pretty well too 😆
@@4TIHZ the greatest form of fan service is any medium ever. I bought a ps3 and 60inch telly with 5.1 in uni specifically for that game. I paid those off a few years ago 😂😂
The best way I've heard the original vs Twin Snakes described is the original is how it really happened, Twin Snakes is how Snake tells the story at bars.
I think of the Twin Snakes as a VR Simulation that Raiden went through that's obviosuly filled with lies and exaggerations. Raiden even mentions having done a Shadow Moses VR mission in MGS2
Imo Twin Snakes is what actually happened and MGS1 is either the official account of the story told in the book Nastasha Romanenko wrote or how Snake tells it to people so he won't seem insane The tone of Twin Snakes isn't too far off from what MGS eventually had in it, really, so that's why I'm saying it
I remember playing the demo on a Pizza Hut demo disc for hours. My favorite game of all time. Even though I've played through it countless times I'll still sit through every single cinematic and Codex call.
It's funny I came across your comment. That's how I first played MGS as well. I went out and bought the game as soon as I could after playing that demo!
Very similar but my demo came from the UK official playstation magazine just had the first section up to the lift. I was instantly hooked with storyline and cinematic style.
Bro, you can run and shoot at the same. Hold square to draw weapon, then hold X to enable move/aim. Continue holding X, then release square button to shoot. Every time you press Square, you'll shoot, and you'll be able to move if you keep holding X. Makes Ocelot fight much easier
Played the game like 4 times and never knew you could actually be transported in the back of trucks! A testament to the amount of small details on offer!
The series in general has so many small details to count. I've played 1-5 many times and always learn something new from playing or watching videos. I never get tired of playing them.
@@Dynamo33 ive played it numerous times and made that long trek every time. I thought you had to because Snake was pissed at Otacon for telling him he had to go back
Shit, I never even thought about the evasion alarm! I still use the codec ringtone and alert notification, it's at the point where hearing the alert sound from anything else is weird.
I remember being a kid and reaching the CD case bit. Colonel tells me to check the back of the CD case. Man, I was stuck for days. Running around looking for a CD case in game. When it was actually the physical Metal Gear Solid CD case I got from the store haha🤦😂
Yea, this was before my house had internet access and I didn’t have the original case for the game when I originally played it in ‘98. If it wasn’t for good ol’ video game mags like EGM and GameFan having it printed in their Tips and Tricks sections back at that time, I couldn’t say HOW LONG this would’ve taken me to figure out. (To the OP: I also thought at the time it was referring to an in-game CD case lying on a desk or something that I had to find.)
I loved how the whole Ninja / Gray Fox first scene resembles the "Predator" (yeah the Arnold one), as theres such an erie horror tone on this segment. Psyco Mantis had that horror vibe as well. Come to think of it the bosses are all really good regarding backstory, looks, character... i just love this game man..!
That's why the game had such an impact. At that time you just never saw that level of character development or convincing voice acting. I think it was probably the first game to do this and it basically changed how people perceived games and what a game could actually be story wise.
Pretty sure this one of the first games I've played where it actually scared me as a kid first playing it. The ninja scene and psycho mantis always gave me chills, and the ninja part I was thinking ghosts and stuff. Then I learned after getting the camera 📷 you could catch pics of actual ghosts hidden in the game. When I first discoved it was taking a picture of myself in the women's bathroom after Meryl, and to my horror after developing it what I saw.
I was under the impression that he salvaged it from the chopper you shoot down with Stinger? Makes sense cos after you shoot it down and proceed to the snowfield, there is a parachute seen in the trees which hints liquid landed there so the Hind wouldn't be far off. Then from there you go to the underground base where raven is in wait with the gun from the chopper
@@sevenproxies4255 aw shit I over thought the whole thing, thought it would have fit together nicely. Guess I should've done a quick Google before I went on a rant
@@himynameis3664 I learned that my first time fighting Vulcan Raven because I was all 'Oh no! How do I beat this guy!? I have a foxhound tattoo on my calf. This entire series in-short, kept me away from a lot of trouble and help with a lot of my depression as a kid. It helped me accept the ugliest of situations and made me laugh at the right times. Cheers.
I remember it saying sexual situations on the rating. My mom bought this game and wouldn’t give it to me until 2 years after release only for me to find out that it was the underwear scene lol
Its actually not just because of that scene. Its also because during the Psycho Mantis scene she acts super sexual towards Snake and begs him to ''take her'' while under his control. Snake gets flirty in a few codec calls as well which I imagine pre 2000 got the old mums up in a tizzy as well :P
@@Azazreal oh yeah, that bit in the psycho mantis fight was uncomfortable considering my mom was sitting next to me, luckily she doesn't speak english but you don't need to understand it to get an idea of the situation.
One thing I did enjoy with the Twin Snakes version was that the devs did include a shortcut to reduce the backtracking for changing the keycard shapes. On the right side of the main hangar there are steam and nitrogen lines you could shoot to instantly change the keycard shape. But it was risky because it involved hang, drop, and then catching the next rail to get to the pipes. MGS1 is damn good. If you do have a PS3 and a physical PS1 copy you can play it that way as well. All PS3s play PS1 physical games.
I actually really liked the over the top action scenes! You have to consider that The Matrix and Romeo must die had just come out and those kind of scenes were THE new thing! Finally Hollywoord recognised something that was typically found only in anime. I think for that reason it really fits the game with its over the top villains and a Hollywood version of something that has essentially the structure of an anime
"Imagine you're playing doom for a second and every time a demon hits you, you stand still for a second and can't fire back" But this isn't Doom... it's not meant to be doom. It's the complete opposite. Same goes for criticizing the fact that the game actually has flinch when you get shot by Sniper Wolf; this ain't no Call of Duty where getting shot has the equivalent reaction of getting bit by a large mosquito.
MGS1 will forever be one of my best memories in gaming. I remember playing it for the first time growing up and I was absolutely blown away. I've probably beat it 50+ times to this day and still enjoy it. This game was years ahead of its time. There's so many details, dynamics, and different aspects of game play along with a a very good story that ties everything in perfectly. With better graphics it could easily rival any game that has come out since then 24 years ago. All in a very good Era of gaming too. Today's games look more realistic and intense than ever, but they just lack something that this game had. Idk what it is, but they're just not the same.
Don’t know if you’re going to see this but I believe I have found out why new games don’t feel like the old ones. In short It’s soul I think today games have less and less soul/self associated with them. I think. To some degree. There is a sort of fatigue. A fatigue that all the stories have been told and that there’s no real point of pushing as hard as those guys did because they already got to the top of the mountain. So there’s a lot less passion and drive to achieve what has already been done. Soul is the reason games coming out today feel lifeless.
Funny story: When I was like 13 I beat Psycho Mantis WITHOUT changing the controller to the second port. The reason being that I am Mexican and was playing the European Spanish dub version AND turns out that the Spaniards use a word for "controller" and "controller port" that is almost unheard of in Mexico and therefore, I had no idea what the HELL the colonel was talking about and i just could not figure it out. I just killed him in like a million tried chipping away at his health and it took me like an hour no joke. Imagine my shock when someone told me that you were supposed to do in PLAIN FUCKING SPANISH lol.
If I remind it correctly, you could also shoot the two statues in the room and that would do the same trick as switching controller port. What a legendary game this was.

In Metal Gear (MSX, 1987) you can use thermal goggles and cigarettes to see laser beams and use cardboard box to hide yourself from moving surveillance cameras. Metal Gear Solid had many elements that first appeared in Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (MSX, 1990) from little gameplay details (catching cold and alerting everyone by sneezing, disarming claymores, punching walls for luring enemies) to storydriven and scripted sequences (stairway chase, battle with Hind D), pretty good story and great music
I wasn't too smart I put the Metal gear solid alerted mode on for my incoming text messages. I always get nervous when it goes off! I'm like who can see me?
I remember beating this game 12 times in a row over multiple days. I love it, it's such a legendary game. I wish it would get a super high quality remaster. Plus the soundtrack is so damn good! Every track is so iconic.
19:23 You know, that's actually not such a far-fetched idea, considering that the Genome Soldiers were all under Psycho Mantis' influence. It's possible that he was using his psychic powers to turn them into walking, talking cameras. Then again, they can still instantly alert their comrades after Mantis dies, so maybe they just have bodycams or something. Anyway, great review as always, Gman. Keep it up!
@Starscream91 I only said, "They're stupid" (paraphrasing), and you jump on me and call me "kid," tell me to get the stick outta my ass, etc. From where I'm standing, you're the edge boi here, kid.
MGS is still my all time favorite games ever made! I played the demo on the PlayStation jam pack, a demo cd that came with your PlayStation purchase. I still have my original copy. I’ll never get rid of it :) absolutely love this damn game. A masterpiece of modern gaming!
14:35 Yeah. I remember this, played it when I was young as well. "What CD case?? I don't have any CD item in my inventory to check, what does he mean!?" It took me quite a while.
Agreed about Snake's voice, it's very distinct and powerful. I'm proud to say, I can do a dead-on Solid Snake impression. If I had a time machine, I would visit my younger self at age 11 and speak in the Snake voice and watch his brain explode, causing to a time paradox.
Why was it so good? Because when it was released in 1998 (the best year in gaming EVER) there was absolutely nothing else like it on any other platform, mate to me this game is like a fine wine that gets better with age and it's still the best game in the series, this game will forever be a dead set masterpiece!
Sorry Shin, although Metal Gear on PS1 was apparently more popular, for me it was Tenchu : Stealth Assassins with the TV brightness turned down ultra low so you can only really see the Ki Meter. I'm so sad.
I found Twin Snakes to be pretty good as a remake, although to be fair, this was my first introduction to the original MGS. I definitely need to play the original emulated to see the differences. Either way, it was a major revelation for video games and has gone to create on of the most insane, yet incredible series ever.
I am amazed I missed out on this franchise as long as I did. I didn't even know about Metal Gear until I played Metal Gear Rising back in 2013 during that whole fanwar: The DmC reboot vs MGR. Then I was so interested in the world I jumped back to MGS4 and was amazed, then I went and played the HD Collection for Sons of Liberty, Snake Eater and Peace walker and was even more blown away. I don't think I played the Original MGS1 till the end but damn did I love it and still play it to this day. Plus I know a lot of people have their issues with The Phantom Pain, but it remains my most played MGS game to date with nearly 500 hours played.
I was so dumb as a kid that i thought that Campbell meant the back of the CD case you get in game..... i spent days trying to figure out how to look at it.... finally i asked my dad to help and he said, "Why dont you look at the back of the real CD case?" Biggest face palm ever
I’m glad you mentioned tenchu , as it is my favorite game , many UA-camrs who speak of stealth genre , forget about tenchu , and tenchu and metal gear help create a genre that to this day is still my favorite genre of gaming !
Considering the style looks the same as some of his recent thumbnails, I'm gonna go ahead and assume it's an artist he's throwing money at to make them for him, so basically the source would be either Gman himself and/or the artist.
The stealth effect is used the same way as water effect and works if you use a 3dfx Glide API, or emulate it with a Glide Wrapper. It was also possible to run at 1024x768 if you used Voodoo 2 in SLi.
I still remember that Phantom Pain video you did but I never thought you'd do a full on review on the original Metal Gear Solid or any other entry for that matter! That Twin Snakes tear down was absolutely legendary. I wonder what the chances are for you covering a few more of them?
I don´t know what version of the pc port you played, or what versions are available, but in my original CD version the stealth effects worked perfectly! Also, when the Louvre of videogames finally opens, Metal Gear Solid and Half Life each deserve a special place of honor. Two incredibly influential games!
This game revolutionized everything about video gaming for me. Very great memories, the nostalgia is grand. I've always wanted to play Twin Snakes since the graphics looked sharper, but after seeing this video, I think I'm not missing out on much.
Recently just completed this game about a few days ago. I’m already started on MGS2, and I just want to thank Gman for getting me into metal gear with confidence
Great story, excellent voice acting, great graphics for its time and great gameplay. The intro always gave me the chills, it was almost like I was watching the beginning of a movie. No game prior to it ever made me feel like that. 6:25 nice! lol
Man, i watch your channel for years, but now at last you cover my favorite game, the best game of that Generation in my humble opinion. I have a PC original from the 2000. And to put cherry on the top, i bought it off from an Aussie guy :). Greetings from Serbia.
Although the game has aged I love going back and playing it just to be in the world and atmosphere of shadow Moses. I was like 10 or 11 when it came out and I just loved it from day one.
Dude, you really nail it on the head when talking about these games. It's great that our generation can also go back and relive these experiences like getting in a time machine. I feel like being in a retirement home is gonna be pretty cool.
I think konami should remastered metal gear 1 and 2 when solid snake during his days in foxhound was led and betrayed by big boss and greyfox and fights both them in zanzibar and outer heaven. Another is giving other metal gears solid characters their own spin offs such as grey fox, ocelot, liquid snake and foxhound and solidus snake since raiden metal gear solid revengeance was a successful and memorable with the memes, characters, and boss fights and more importantly soundtrack
I almost closed the video right out the gate but gave it a second and ended up watching the whole thing. Subbed to see where you go from here. I'd recommend working on your recording setup/soundmix and maybe loosen up the newscast cadence a little- leaning just a bit more in the casual conversation direction- and you've got a solid commentary channel voice here.
Great video! I remember I would always troll the second Sniper Wolf fight with the Nikita launcher. As soon as the fight starts, go all the way to the right and use the hill as cover. Snake is invincible. Wolf is unable to hit Snake from this spot, so you can unleash Nikita rockets until Wolf dies. Probably one of the easiest boss fights in video game history, and this is coming from someone who is dreadful at video games 🎮👍😆
Seriously, I recently played through MGS1 for the first time via emulator after loving MGS5 and was so ready to get invested in this series. MGS1 was campy and silly and full of heart but had genuinely sharp and incisive commentary on the state of the world hidden within. I loved it... And then my computer wasn't able to emulate MGS2 properly. And there's no PC ports of half of the games... and they're all locked away on consoles that range from inconvenient to buy to obsolete. This has to be one of the hardest franchises to get into for a newcomer in gaming, and some damn remasters or at least proper ports to PC would let me and many others finally join in without having to go out of our way to get all these old consoles and games.
Even if it happened I'd never buy it. MGS rights are held by Konami who did such scummy things with their company in recent years I could never do it justice in a comment.
When I think of the PS1, I think of Metal Gear Solid 1, Fighting Force, Gex, and Soul Reaver, Star Ocean, Half Life... When I think of the PS2, I think of Metal Gear Solid 2, Final Fantasy X, Soul Reaver 2, Dark Cloud, Onimusha 1-2-3, Rune. I miss that era.
Yo thanks for the video GMan and covering one of the most prolific series in gaming. Everyone has their own favorite Metal Gear Solid title and personally I need to play one of them to get a better understanding of its story and characters. Yes I'm super late on this but things going on in the world maybe all need a little bit of Metal Gear Solid in our lives. Take care everyone and stay safe.
Attention to detail, thats what made mgs so awesome in my opinion: Snake's breathing, enemies reacting to footprints, player actions affect cutscenes (like grabbing the socom or not at the beggining, sneaking or being spotted, saving the game or not doing it so often), the different ways you can beat some bosses, the controller moving when Psycho Mantis tells you to put it on the ground and he uses his power (vibration) to move it, the fact that you can kill Baker before getting inside the room where he's being kept, different ways to scape the cell, and my personal favourite... when Liquid starts the bomb countdown but you can't fight just yet, and during his speech telling you the condition you are in, the counter keeps going down.
It was good because Hideo Kojima had not yet jumped the shark when it came to excessicely long cut-scenes. Yes they were a bit on the long side in MGS compared to other playstation games at the time. But nowhere near as drawn out as the cut-scenes that came in later sequels.
Its getting worse with every new game he puts out MGS V, the Intro Mission takes control away from you pretty much every 30 seconds, and it takes forever, but at least once your dropped in Afghanistan, you get a full mission with only 2 or so little cutscenes. Death Stranding... for the first 3 hours of the game, you get to control yourself for 5- to 10% of that time. The entire rest are cutscenes. And they are NOT that interesting. Almost refunded the game because of it.
@@kenobiwanobi889 I completed MGS4. I felt it concluded the story og Solid Snake and didn't feel like looking into further sequels. The cut-scenes were so long they had to introduce, not only a pause feature for the cut-scenes, but a SAVE FEATURE in the middle of cut-scenes. What has Kojima been smoking!?
@@sevenproxies4255 Yes, havent played 4 myself, but Ive heard its the worst in the series when it comes to cutscenes, some of which take an hour or longer. Along comes Death Stranding, doing the same thing, except the story is pretty bad, so its not really worth all that time
@@kenobiwanobi889 There was only one long cutscene in MGS4, at the very end of the game, it was a 1,5 hour movie basically. AND IT WAS FUCKING GREAT. Just imagine, it's 2008, you just completed one of the best games ever on a new console generation and then you get a full feature movie as a treat. Compared to a dozen extremely dissapointing and boring ending I would take another 2 hours long Kojima cinematic anytime.
@@WARXion Fair point. As I said, I never got to play MGS4, but after what people told me, I imagined it to be similiar to newer Kojima-Games. It was hard for me to really enjoy MGS Vs story, not because of the length and amount of cutscenes, but more the many times youre expected to have played other games to understand the plot (There were two non-main-MGS-titles for the PSP or Vita, dont quite remember, which are set directly before MGSV), and just that the plot goes three different directions at once, you never know what it really is all about, and it ends so abruptly. Although that isnt so much Kojimas fault as Konamis.
I will say two things you kinda missed. In B1 of the second building (same building that you enter after taking out the tank) there is a level 3 room with Nikita Missiles ready to go, not a far trip AND can be further cut down by just going there first. The Rat doesn't always eat the PAL Key, if you are fast enough, you can get the card immediately (also in the Otacon ending it's never touched by the rat, but then again you also miss out on having two bombs in your inventory that you have to toss out)
@@BobsRevenge Best played with friends but possible to soloQ. If you play solo you're at a disadvantage but if you play with silenced weapons then use tactics/stealth to take out players.
@@MrTHotz tbh I was just trying to direct a burn at gman because I was miffed at the death stranding joke lol, I have almost 100 hours logged and love the game
Charismatic characters, unintelligible story that still somehow hooked you, subtle bits of self conscious humor, that one " boss fight" when yo had to plug your pad to the second slot, original gameplay, memorable soundtrack etc etc
When I played MGS back in the day, I was blown away by what they did cinematically, and I could see real efforts they were making to make the game more grounded and realistic, breaking away from the ties that video games once had. They made your actions have consequence, and they even tried to shift away from having names like "Big Boss" by acknowledging that all these soldiers had other names. And then in MGS2 they had a vampire who literally stood on water and pinned your shadow, and a boss you could never hit just because "she was lucky."
Gman, I'm really happy you're cover MGS, but, who does your thumbnails? Just to be topical, this one specifically, I'd like to have it for my desktop wallpaper, if it's the proper aspect ratio
Yeah, @waggel had it right, if you see what appears to be original art in the thumbnail or on the intro of a video, just expand the description. These content creators are big on promoting the work of the folks that help out with their channels so you can likely get all that info in the description and link up with the creator directly
I remember cellphones being monophonic and not customizable back in those days. But yeah, I got the ringtones (alert for SMS and codec call for call) as soon as I got my Motorola V3 some good years later.
You can just "look" at Meryl. First person view. Keep looking at her. She blushes the longer you take a look at her. Its these little things, that I heavily enjoy in Kojimas games.
And if you have the patience to sit through and stare at her long enough, eventually she will slap Snake, to the point where Snake can be killed with a slap.
Until METAL GEAR SOLID I had never played a Metal Gear game. I bought it open-boxed based solely on hype. It was a great TECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRATOR for the Playstation and it was one of the first games that offered unlimited continues DEMANDING TO BE CONTINUED AND FINISHED. As far as I’m concerned, looking back, the stealth mechanics were terrible and ridiculous but it was done in a tongue in cheek manner to be satirical. Nobody is sneaking past guards that only have a 3 foot field of vision. Nobody is sneaking past guards in cardboard boxes. It wasn’t until Splinter Cell where I played what felt like a real stealth tactical espionage game. I think what really helped make Metal Gear Solid memorable was having a great cast of characters (Vulcan Raven, Sniper wolf and METAL GEAR REX), great boss battles and a fantastic soundtrack. Though Kojima attempted to pump the game with anti-American propaganda it was kept to a minimum by the PlayStation’s lack of hardware. Once PlayStation 2 came out metal gear solid to onwards was nothing more than another Hideo Kojima anti-American cut scene movie. I stopped playing Metal Gear games after Metal Gear 2 only to return for metal gear Revengeance early this year. I only bought it long after watching the game multiple times on UA-cam and then deciding to buy it. Once again: the characters were really interesting and exciting and the music was really great. In 2020 looking back I have to admit that Kojima was right about everything. First of all: we actually have social media AI networks that delete information that they themselves consider to not be in our best interest or to not be in their best interest. I needn’t mention that Stephen Armstrong bears ridiculous resemblance to Donald Trump‘s sociopathic rhetoric - both of whom channel Reagan's "Make America Great Again" nonsense. Metal Gear Solid and Revengeance are my favorites, although I enjoy watching the cutscenes of MG2, MG3 and MG:GZ. REVENGEANCE somehow managed to be the best "ninja game" I ever played since the 80's.

Yeah especially not having a clue what to do now we have UA-cam lol all the good old days we where so lucky

The Twin Snakes is pretty much Otacon retelling Sunny the events of the Shadow Moses Incident, just like one of his Japanese Animes.
If I had a dollar for every time I heard that I'd have enough to fund a better remake.
@@GuyOnAChair LMAO
As someone who despises the way The Twin Snakes turned what was otherwise a pretty grounded story into over-the-top Looney Toons nonsense, I have to admit that is a pretty good way to interpret the game as head canon (nothing in the game supports it unfortunately)
It won't change my stance on the game, but thinking about it through this interpretation, I can't help but laugh at the idea of Hal's perception of Snake.

The best way I've heard the original vs Twin Snakes described is the original is how it really happened, Twin Snakes is how Snake tells the story at bars.
i’m replaying twin snakes right now it’s so ridiculous lmao
Nah, Snake wouldn't exaggerate it like that.
Otacon, however...
I think of the Twin Snakes as a VR Simulation that Raiden went through that's obviosuly filled with lies and exaggerations. Raiden even mentions having done a Shadow Moses VR mission in MGS2
Imo Twin Snakes is what actually happened and MGS1 is either the official account of the story told in the book Nastasha Romanenko wrote or how Snake tells it to people so he won't seem insane
The tone of Twin Snakes isn't too far off from what MGS eventually had in it, really, so that's why I'm saying it
@@NobleRaider2747 No because MGS4 uses dialogue from PS1 MGS meaning Kojima himself probably doesn't consider it a replacement over the original

It's funny I came across your comment. That's how I first played MGS as well. I went out and bought the game as soon as I could after playing that demo!
Very similar but my demo came from the UK official playstation magazine just had the first section up to the lift. I was instantly hooked with storyline and cinematic style.

This game is such a timeless masterpiece. Even it's graphics have a certain charm to it.
Old grafix are leet
Ya ps1 graphics are basically a art style at this point but ya this game does hold up exceptionally well for a ps1 game.
The graphics of MGS1 were way beyond what even game developers themselves at the time thought was possible, just to get an idea about it.
Considering Kojima's previous naming conventions, I feel like "Confirmed Arseman" will be a character in a future game.
I remember being a kid and reaching the CD case bit. Colonel tells me to check the back of the CD case. Man, I was stuck for days. Running around looking for a CD case in game. When it was actually the physical Metal Gear Solid CD case I got from the store haha🤦😂
Yeah that fucked me over too playing it on an emulator.
@Stefano Pavone I genuinely didn't know that. I just Googled the answer after I got tired of searching aimlessly.
(To the OP: I also thought at the time it was referring to an in-game CD case lying on a desk or something that I had to find.)
i tried to somehow investigate the data baker gave me😅
Yeah, that was a real stonewall for a rental in a generic Blockbuster box.
Fun fact... The vulcan cannon that Raven is armed with... Is actually taken from a freaking jet fighter.
I was under the impression that he salvaged it from the chopper you shoot down with Stinger? Makes sense cos after you shoot it down and proceed to the snowfield, there is a parachute seen in the trees which hints liquid landed there so the Hind wouldn't be far off.

Idk what it is, but they're just not the same.
i feel this way about alot of games now vs then. games back then felt more like a game, nowadays games feel more like simulations
Don’t know if you’re going to see this but I believe I have found out why new games don’t feel like the old ones. In short
It’s soul
I think today games have less and less soul/self associated with them.

Great video! I remember I would always troll the second Sniper Wolf fight with the Nikita launcher. As soon as the fight starts, go all the way to the right and use the hill as cover. I cant believes metal gear solid 1, 2 and 3 havent been remastered on current consoles

Its getting worse with every new game he puts out
MGS V, the Intro Mission takes control away from you pretty much every 30 seconds, and it takes forever, but at least once your dropped in Afghanistan, you get a full mission with only 2 or so little cutscenes.
You don't have to backtrack to the armoury for the Nikita missile launcher. It's in the same building that you first need it.
Fun fact: Gman commented on PW's Snake Eater piano version and Snake Eater.
Eyyy I think I saw that.
I will say two things you kinda missed.
In B1 of the second building (same building that you enter after taking out the tank) there is a level 3 room with Nikita Missiles ready to go, not a far trip AND can be further cut down by just going there first.
The Rat doesn't always eat the PAL Key, if you are fast enough, you can get the card immediately (also in the Otacon ending it's never touched by the rat, but then again you also miss out on having two bombs in your inventory that you have to toss out)
When are you going to check out Hunt Showdown - think as an FPS guy you'll like it.
Don't you need friends for that game?
@@BobsRevenge Best played with friends but possible to soloQ. If you play solo you're at a disadvantage but if you play with silenced weapons then use tactics/stealth to take out players.
@@MrTHotz tbh I was just trying to direct a burn at gman because I was miffed at the death stranding joke lol, I have almost 100 hours logged and love the game
@@BobsRevenge Real question, where is the fun in death stranding?
@@zaikolebolsh5724 Sadly, only when you're fighting something which isn't exactly common.
5:46 that's still my ringtone now lmao
Man!!!! I was watching MGS clips this morning after a long time...
What a coincidence!?!
That's what I thought too. This morning I decided to Marathon the series and suddenly Gman uploaded a video about mgs :D
Charismatic characters, unintelligible story that still somehow hooked you, subtle bits of self conscious humor, that one " boss fight" when yo had to plug your pad to the second slot, original gameplay, memorable soundtrack etc etc
Yeah, GmanLives? The real question is: Why are YOU so good?
His Aussie kangarooski of a chode is able to surpass Metal Gear.

Milathemute, it’s in the description
@@waggel. Thanks, appreciate it
Yeah, @waggel had it right, if you see what appears to be original art in the thumbnail or on the intro of a video, just expand the description.
I remember finding the bloody hallway. No story, you just find it. It was genuinely scary to me.. I was like 7.. but still. It was terrifying.
I would say more anti-militarist rather than anti-american, even if in the end it's the same shit because US are garbo

Man I was so proud showing off this game to my PC-only brother at the time. Wore out the PSM demo disc going through that intro over and over.
I, too had the codec sound as my ringtone on my sweet motorola razr flip phone. And I, too, was absolutely drowning in poontang
