    Hey you forgot one of the benefits of the air cells in the outsole: they look dope as heck

  • @jw_25

    I'm very overweight (currently 280), a heel-to-mid-foot striker, run only on the sidewalk.
    Most On shoes I've tried for my feet are pretty crap, but the Cloudmonster is thus far the best daily running shoe I've ever had.
    No break-in time, nice lockdown for my foot, no more heel pain, no more occasional swollen ankle, my legs feel a bit more fresh, plus the speed board/rocker design makes a difference.
    The shoes are marketed as "monster cushioning" but I'm getting an oddly firm-ish ride but super soft landings on the concrete with no "bottoming put". I tried the New Balance 1080 v12 and my heel kept occasionally sinking to the ground, destroying my heels.
    Basically everything else is just as you said Zach.

    I've had these for a few months. Very comfortable. I normally run in 8.5, but the store only had 9, so mine are roomy even with an orthotic. I'm only training in them (up to 10K distance). I discovered my feet got tired during a 10-mile race - possible due to these being slightly too big. Still great shoes. 😃👍

    • @Joel-5747
      @Joel-5747 Рік тому +3

      Yes, your feet will get tired because there are huge holes in the sole to absorb energy... vs returning it. The sole has poor engineering for a top-model running shoe... I wouldn't run more than a half mile in these things. Imagine running on wet sand vs firm grass. For folks who maintain a reasonably quick pace (sub 7min) I think a carbon fiber plate w a reasonably engineered sole will take you much further.

  • @iakona23

    I’ve got this shoe in the purple color.
    I also put about 600 miles in the Cloudstratus V2 before those cloud elements kind of lost their ability to maintain cushioning which resulted in me feeling that speedboard and making the shoe uncomfortable to run in.
    I really loved the Cloudstratus V2, and the Cloud Monster is very similar in fit and feel. But the Cloud Monster is lighter, it has better midsole cushioning, and the upper feels even lighter and more breathable. One nice thing about these shoes for me is that I could wear them with or without socks, and without really having to worry about how tightly I laced them up, and I never had blisters or discomfort or soreness of any kind (at least until the Cloudstratus v2 had over 500 or 600 miles on them.)

    • @FootDoctorZach
      @FootDoctorZach  2 роки тому +3

      I really wanted the purple color but my size was out- yeah I noticed too with previous On’s you can tell exactly when the midsole starts giving - will be interesting to see how these do over the long haul

    • @iakona23
      @iakona23 2 роки тому +2

      @@FootDoctorZach Yeah, if these shoes don’t last very long then I probably will be reticent to buy more at $170 each. My Cloudstratus V2 held up ok outside of the cloud elements starting to lose their cushioning ability after 500 miles. I can still wear them to walk around in.

    • @soylencer
      @soylencer Рік тому +1

      @@iakona23 how did you feel the fit compared to the Stratus? Mine are finally bottoming out since I wear them 24/7 (on my feet all day but nor running) I really loved that roomy toebox because I have a *mildly* wide forefoot and long toes so it's hard to find the right combination of length/width while still keeping my heel and arch where they need to be. I am jonsing for a pair of these but I doubt I'll find any local to try on.

    • @iakona23
      @iakona23 Рік тому +1

      @@soylencer The upper on the Cloud Monster kind of lacks structure and my toes get scrunched together because the toe box is not as roomy as the Cloudstratus. Maybe I could solve that problem by going up half a size. I would not recommend Cloud Monster personally because I think there are better shoes out there with better longevity.

    • @soylencer
      @soylencer Рік тому +1

      @@iakona23 thanks for the reply! It's so hard for me to find shoes which fit correctly that honestly the longevity is kind of secondary. I genuinely tried on 30 or 40 pairs of others over the course of a week before I tried on the Stratus which fit great.
      I spent my whole life overweight and wearing $30 Walmart sneakers while standing/squatting for work. My weight isn't an issue anymore but the damage is done. So I splurge on fit and comfort now. The Stratus were the best shoe I've ever worn, though I need to admit I don't run in them.
      I have a pair of CloudRock that I'm also generally satisfied with although they've not been on the trail more than twice. Those also had a nice roomy toebox.
      Anyway, while the fact that they lock cool as heck makes Clouds my first stop now, the fact that they seem to fit keeps me around.

    I decided to buy this shoe after viewing at sooooooo many reviews to find the best running shoe for moderate running. I’m not a racer or anything but I do daily running up hills, and on the roads for the most part.I have flat feet that probate pretty bad. These aren’t support shoes but rather performance. They’re super comfy!
    This was a good investment!!! The shoe does what it suppose to do!! I ran faster and longer without fatigue. I was able to run up this steep hill far more easier on my monster on clouds versus my basic on clouds. The shoe has energy return throughout the entire sole. It’s pretty cool. I was very excited about it. My heart rate wasn’t so high either! I get great. No back pain. I will be buying a new pot once I wear these out. I’ll be back to two you how durable they are. I love my shoes! And they’re pretty stylish as well. The casted me $170

    I've had time to put some miles on my Cloudmonsters. Updated review.
    Still quite love the midsole. The outsole shows considerable wear on the forefoot. More than I would expect after 3 weeks almost daily use.
    The laces kinda' suck. Hard to get a good lock down without putting pressure on the top of my feet. Would much rather have conventional pattern with grommeted eyelets.
    The tongue NEEDS padding, at least at the top.
    Still, I am glad I bought them.
    Cheers, Everyone

      Jogging up hills, lately. No question, I've given the front some hard use.
      And, lose form when I tire. Some unintended foot dragging going on.

      mid-front. See how it goes from there.

    Former elite + long-time run-specialty outfitter here. Love that someone from the Med realm is entering the UA-cam shoe conversation!
    Just some vocab thoughts for you moving forward -
    "Supershoes" and "Plush Rides" are two separate categories. Supershoes are typically a race-specific shoe with a Carbon Fiber plate + Pebax (or similar) foam. Think Vapor/AlphaFly, Endorphin Pro, Asics Metaspeed, Adios Pro, Hyperion Elite, etc.
    "Plush" rides are typically meant for long, slow miles to keep you healthy. Brooks Glycerin, Saucony Triumph, Hoka Clifton/Bondi, etc. The Cloudmonster is certainly closer than On has ever come to the "plush" category, but for the most part they have focused on the more responsive daily trainer realm, that is firmer than everything aforementioned - think Saucony Ride, Brooks Launch, Hoka Rincon, etc!
    The cloudmonster is a shoe meant to run long, not necessarily fast. It's made with a very standard EVA that is pretty heavy if we're comparing them to "run-fast" shoes. They have the EchoBoom as their "Super" Shoe.

    Just got these last week and have put about 20 miles on them, including one max effort 5k, a long slow run and a 5 mile zone 2 run. I've worn Hoka Clifton 8s for about a year now. I noticed a significant performance increase immediately and PR'd in the 5k. However, I am noticing some ankle pain and a plantar fasciitis flare-up. I'm a heavier runner (240 pounds), and a midfoot striker who primarily runs on asphalt or concrete. I will try them with custom insoles and phase them in slowly. Maybe that'll fix the issue. If not, they'll function as a race shoe and maybe a speed work shoe but not an everyday trainer. It's a little bit alarming that I'm already getting niggles after such a low volume.

    • @FootDoctorZach

    Big ON fan here - I’ve been wearing On Cloudflyers for 4 months now and am super happy. I use them solely for the gym and work (hospital ICU nurse)
    I use Hoka Bondi’s solely for running 3 miles, 3-4 times/week.
    This combination of shoes, plus custom orthotic inserts has done wonders to prevent injury. I’m in my late 40,’s and have had bouts of plantar fascitis and trochanter bursitis in the past and just general exhausted legs from long work hours. These shoes and the inserts have helped to prevent those issues from recurring.

    Could you do the Cloud Neo Nexus just because its the first 100% recyclable shoe and a monthly payment for your shoes as a service so you send them back after 6 months and if you want to continue the subscription you just get a new pair made from components from the old pairs that have been broken down and is 100% circularity meaning you re-use every piece of the previous shoe. I just ran in them and the springboard and the light weight was incredible. Nothing about them felt 100% recyclable. They could revolutionize the shoe industry.

    Good shoes aren’t about what “feels” comfortable. It’s about support to your foot bones. Ask a podiatrist. Most shoes that have a sole that bends in half easily don’t offer the bone support your metatarsals, arch, ankle and other bones need (brands like Nike) so cheap to make , it’s all marketing. That’s why Asics and New Balance are still a top recommendation in the podiatrist community.

    5:07 this doesn’t necessarily mean the shoe is giving you consistently lower heart rate at same time and pace of running vs the new balances. The most probable cause of this is probably due to your V02 max slightly increasing. Especially since you had been running with the new balances prior to owning the cloudmonsters. You gave your body time to adapt to better oxygen efficiency and storage by the time you did the test with the QC’s. Again, this is just my educated hypothesis. Now if you waited to do this test at the same time with both shoes then just disregard everything i previously stated. Really cool to see you test and mention it though

    Great review Zach! I am middle aged, have some pronation and occasional knee pains. Are these stability shoes or at least provides stability to help in pronation and knee issues compared to other shoes in On cloud ? I like comfortable/cushy ride, thought this can tick most of the boxes, please let me know and keep the reviews coming!

      They have alot of energy return but stability isn’t their biggest strong suit - the heel counter is shallow and thin plus the profile is more streamlined f

    Great review. I have been running in the Cloudmonster and am impressed. I have battled some metatarsalgia on my left foot for a bit and these seem to work well in not irritating it. Any suggestions on marathon racing shoes with this condition?

    Any suggestions on an On Cloud model for chronic back pain? It’s time for me (60YO female, small frame and build with high arch) to have a decent daytime walk around shoe. I’m considering Cloudrunner, On Cloud 5 or Cloudmonster. Would love to know your thoughts. TY!

      depends if the pebax plate bothers you or not- the On’s are more economical - Saucony more forgiving

    I'm so excited for these shoes but I'm going to have to wait about 6-12 months before I can really try them (having major knee surgery soon). I have a pair if Cloudflow but went back to the Cloudflyer as my running shoe until my knee got too bad. I am a big Cloud fan.

    Great review, I have the Cloudflyer and Cloudace but find them to hard. Especially for my metatarsal as your foot is on the hard plastic plate under the insoles. Is it better in the Cloudmonster?

      It’s better but not “plush” - still plastic under there but the rocker helps a lot - some love it some hate it - I personally thought it felt awesome under the Mets

      Problem is, that many people who tried barefoot running and are negative about it, didn't transit properly. Barefoot running is the best thing for your body, you will have the best natural spring and cushioning, but there is a huge but. You need to spend almost a year to strengthen your feet, enkels and calves and learn the technique. If you do all of that, it is the best of running you can do, but it is not something you can try and give your opinion. Many "studies" came from non barefoot runners and they just don't know. With all the respect to the shoe doctor, but with a heel strike like that, for sure he will injured himself trying barefoot running. The answer of how to run with the less amount of injuries and most effective is quite simple. Just run like a human is created. So no support, cushioning, high heels or whatever, but it takes a lot of effort and many people just don't want to spend time in this.
      Good luck and enjoy your running!

      The reason for knee pain, is many times heel landing. Killing for your knees. Cushioning will not solve this, but make it worse. More cushioning will make you land harder! Try to transit to forefoot or midfoot landing.

    Hey! So I have a friend who's a doctor of physical therapy and I asked him what he thought about the use of plates in shoes and if that is disruptive to strengthening and maintenance of strength of tissues and joints in the foot and up the chain of various joints. He said he didn't feel that it would really be an issue for most people. What do you think as someone who is more specialized on foot helath?

      Yeah i mean unless you wear them 24/7 from the time of birth I dont see an issue. We spend a lot of time barefoot as it is and the human foot was never meant to run on asphalt so i dont see issues aside from if the plate is too stiff and close to your foot with no give you could get heel pain but thats about it

      After a friend suggested the cloudmonsters I bought a pair about 2 months ago. I deal with plantars mainly in one foot and primarily heel pain. Working 10hrs/day and on my feet the entire time, my feet do get a little sore about halfway through the day. I like the bounce and the shoe overall but might try something with a little more cushioning.
