I saw Jeff Sipe aka Apt Q258 play with Aquarium Rescue Unit many moons ago @ Berkeley Cafe in Raleigh. I sat literally 10 feet from his throne. Best right hand I've ever seen.
There are plenty of guitarists who can play fast. To each their own, but for me Jimmy's combination of blues and jazz in his playing sets him apart from those with similar technical skill. His runs are so unique, I've never heard anyone play like him. And the dude NEVER makes a mistake. I've seen him in concert for 2 hours or more and he never missed a note.
I completely agree. I love his use of his whammy bar (not on this song) and volume knob. He gets the coolest effect, like a slide. One of the most unique guitarists out there. I saw him play with Phil Lesh and Friends with Warren Haynes for 4 shows, had to be some of the best music I have ever seen.
Believe it or not, I've seen him make a mistake on a video on UA-cam which I just noticed for the first time a few minutes ago. It was on an easy part that I'm sure he would have liked to have back. It might be the only one he's ever made. But what an amazing player and he has the best tone I've ever heard.
i'm here to testify that Jimmy has always been amicable and has a kind gentle way about him. he's 1 year younger, went to High School together. in maybe '77 one Thursday i recall i was not playing my guitar, but out partying, and Jimmy was playing the school Talent Show, "Carry On My Wayward Son" it seems i recall. i see him on occasion, last time 2009 Raleigh Jazz Guitar Festival/Raleigh NC (John McClaughlin was also there). anyway always a treat to hear Jimmy, he's one unique guitarist with a feel and heart in his music that provides a wonderful experience.
12 years later--still here. I've transcribed most of Jimmy's solo on this. His improvisation level is unreal. Spending all these hours with this solo has made it abundantly clear how deep his well runs with musical ideas expressed on the guitar
The little smug smiles they give each other when they know they just killed a solo or little riff :) and the others just smile back like damn right you just did that!
I'd Like that a hundred times if I could. Has everything I love in a tune: great groove, tight rhythm section, Hammond, great guitar tone, and a couple of twists here and there. Thanks for the video!
If you like Jimmy, check out Derek Trucks and Tedeschi Trucks Band. Derek is definitely a disciple of Herring, and that band balances the line between being a true jam band and being a more straight-ahead blues/soul/Americana/rock kind of band. The only other player who I believe is at an equal level as Jimmy Herring on guitar is Derek Trucks (I honestly put Derek _just_ a notch higher than Jimmy, but that's more of a personal opinion), so you will certainly enjoy them. A good starting place might be any live youtube vid of them playing Midnight in Harlem. It's a great representation of what they do as a band.
I was getting chills listening to this, and don't know why? I guess no guitar players these days try to push to this limit anymore. This is otherworldly stuff ... Jimi Hendrix was a bad dude playing in a trio !!!!!
Fabulous to hear the fun these guys are having together... just stellar playing all round without a single showoff lick - they don't have to have to prove anything to anybody!
Saw these boys last night open for John McLaughlin in Portland, OR. Not only had I not heard of them but didn't know McLaughlin had an opening act at this show. I figured they must be real good, if they're opening for John. These boys are BAMF's...each and every one of them. I was seriously blown away by the musicianship of each man. At the end, both bands jammed together...EPIC!!
And that's how it's done, ladies and gentlemen. These guys are the quintessential "hip cats on the scene "! Great groove, hip outside lines and general nonchalant musicality. Great big fun that is sadly uncommon among younger musicians these days.
I just googled Jimmy Herring after I read an old interview where Tosin Abasi namedropped him as a ”super cool player”. Was surprised to see he’s a greybeard white guy with a funk band. And then his solo blew me away. So unique and refreshing!

We Spreadheads are very fortunate to have this musican, Jimmy Herring, play with our band, Widespread Panic, every night. He is certainly worthy of all the praise....and more. But a very down to earth, humble guy.
What the hell, this is simply fantastic!! I was checking Jimmy Herring on Instagram and his sound, his way to do bendings without actually bending the strings, has fascinated me instantly. Didn't really imagine he played this way, and this band is astonishing! 😮
I like that Jimmy sticks with his strength - guitar playing. So many players make themselves weaker by trying to lean into their lesser strengths: i.e. singing if they don't have a great voice, writing lyrics if they're not a stroyteller, etc. But Jummy clearly knows what he does best and he focuses on making that as excellent as possible.
