Jimmy Herring is definitely one of the most soulful guitarist alive. His feel, phrasing, tone, is so absolutely perfect. Every note has purpose... so lyrical. Whether he plays slow or fast, he gives me chills. He's influenced my playing and will always inspire me. There's many really great guitarist, and there is no best... that's completely ridicules. To my ear, Jimmy deserves mention to be in say... the top 25 real masters of guitar (and that's a damn big statement)
Very well put my friend. People drive me nuts with "X is the best guitar player in the world" bs.. Having said that, this guy reduces me from a guitar player to a guitar owner.. 😂
That's one of the best guitar instrumentals I've ever heard... I come back everytime. What a band
Staggeringly gorgeous tone....almost vocal-like. That is a masterpiece.
Jeff and Jimmy together again. Love always.
No one will ever sound like Jimmy Herring. His tone is unmatched. The notes he chooses to play (or not play)
I could listen to this song a hundred million times and not get bored!
Thats the Blues guitar Tone every Player wishes to have One Day
Im very very glad i found Jimmy Herring through youtube
I can't imagine how I haven't heard of this guy before. Great player!
I can listen to this melody a million times.
been listening to this performance for year, phenomenal ❤
Started listening to Jimmy now that Allan has passed, this is nice
God bless Jimmy Herring. God bless Jeff Sipe. God bless Matt Slocum.
Was fortunate to have Jimmy as my instructor at AIM/GIT 88-89. One of the nicest people. VERY patient! Lol. Soft spoken yet able to convey his thoughts wonderfully!
One of our true musical treasures.
How could you not like this guy... taste, chops, he's got it all... and his band is incredible as well
He is one of the greats. Electricity pulses through his veins and pulsates through the strings of the guitar. Fluid communication...
Great - superb...
Love the sound of this band - Jimmy sounds wonderful of course - but that Hammond organ sound (and playing) is so fat, warm and soulful - the perfect foil for Jimmy's voice.
Wonderful!!!
So approachable.. In 05" at a Jerry Garcia B-ash out in the mountains of west virginia.. I'm like you look like Jimmy Herring... He's like "that's a relief because I am" maybe not quite the quote... We talked for over an hour.. He came back to our camp site... It was amazing>>>>
Dude this mans touch of the guitar is so fucking spiritual! If I could only construct a guitar solo half as good.. Jimmy your a true talent and inspiration to me.. Thanks for making me strive to be a better guitar player!
I think the best thing to improve our musicality and improv, is to listen to quality music massively, hunt the greatest... I'm currently listening to jazz masters like Charlie Christian, Howard Roberts, Jimmy Rainey... to more I listen and love them, the more that quality starts to emerge in my playing. I try to fall in love with music, then let the music play me.
Yeah, Jimmy inspires me to be a better guitar player.
He also makes me want to throw my guitar away.
Yes, I agree! If we raise the bar high with our listening, we will raise the bar high as far as what's coming out in our own individual playing!
Heh heh, I second (or third) those feelings aallen6408. But I'm never gonna throw my guitar away, though I will apologize to it, if it's been listening to Mr. Herring right before I practice with it.
Love Jimmy's ability to get that slide effect w/o a slide.
As a guitar player... It is REALLY HARD. You have to think as if you are a slide player, which you are not. Just beautiful playing. I can emulate these sounds, just not like Jimmy.
Jimmy uses a Hughes & Kettner Tube Factor which is what I believe is providing this effect in conjunction with the guitar.
@@bizza12 Although the sound may contribute to the impression, I'm convinced the secret is in the playing itself - and it's actually quite hard to do, just like Diax1324 wrote. There even used to be an older video from some guitar clinic here on YT where Jimmy demonstrates the basics of this technique himself. I've also seen little bits of something in this vein from Tom Bukovac and (I think) from Andy Wood...
@@moreorlesslikeso If you can find that I would love to see it as I've never heard another guitarist use this "effect". I'm wondering if its a variation on getting that tone harmonic sound when you use a pick but are muting the strings with your fingertips at the same time.
@@bizza12 I did some digging in my UA-cam history and came up with these:
- Andy Wood guitar series The Woodshed ep4. Sound like Derek Trucks and Duane Allman without a slide!! ua-cam.com/video/dx7au2jrWMo/v-deo.html
- Corona Lessons volume 3, Tom Bukovac, southern harmony & faux slide ua-cam.com/video/UqZi7WwnBQc/v-deo.html
- Jimmy Herring: Jam Session #6 Guitar Lesson ua-cam.com/video/znRkjNpUXf4/v-deo.html (the technique demonstrated by the man himself!)
and
- Jimmy Herring: Jam Session #5 Guitar Lesson ua-cam.com/video/AvPFxxiUe0A/v-deo.html (which is more about those "Holdsworthian" bends - without using a whammy bar)
i love this 4 amazing-players-jamming-in-a-high school band room vibe. JH playing a tele is righteous.
This is truly beautiful music. Jimmy Herring is amazing.
WOW! That tone is amazing. They are all good.
I hear spectacular Jimmy Herring playing
tremendous vibrato and tone. That just made my day.
The brother doesn't just play.....he testifies !!
Years of lessons watching Jimmy, thanks to you brotha.
The acid test? When a fellow can make you believe that you can do it as well. Just so natural and done right. It's all so perfectly clear while you are watching. Great stuff......great players.......great music.
I mean holy shit Jimmy..... you kill it EVERYTIME!!! You’re even better live.... believe it or not!
Jimmy is amazing and so is the Jimmy Herring band.
It's nice to listen .The melody is light.
Great song! Reminds me of "Sweet dreams" by Roy Buchanon
im impressed each and every time i hear this bassist, dudes style is just out of this world!
Jimmy knocks my socks off, for sure. An original...
Saw him at suwanee years ago, he was with widespread panic. Had no idea who he was at the time. I was right at the front about 10 feet away from him. He blew my mind, his tone is amazing and his playing is out of this world.
@@klutz3213 Wooo, im going to go hulaween this year, the lineup is amazing!
damn, what a sound, so melodic, glad I found this guy to listen to.
the chops, the tone, the musical skills to die for !
sounds awesome especially with headphones.. great stereo stuff
A lot of pain and struggle to make that brilliance.... beautiful and much appreciated ❤
I don't usually say this, but oh my God! Finally a tastey B3 player! JH and the band, so nice, you made my day😊
Thumbed up even before listening.
Jimmy is just a really good and likeable human being, thank you for your musical genius
all the time ... I am very impressed with the sound and craftsmanship articulation 🗿 🎵
Gods house band
Great song, great tone, great feel, great everything!
OMG. Incredible musicianship. That Hammond B3 adds super sweet icing to an already very tasty sonic cake. Superb
Fantastic!!!!!!! True world class musicians!!!!!
What a band! Love that smart whole-tone turnaround/outro. Yeah, I II7 bVI6 Vm7. NICE!!
been listening to this session for years. never tires and always inspires. love jimmy.
One of the BEST guitarists playing LIVE today, maybe EVER! Certainly in my top 5 in no particular order.
Sweetest vibrato I have ever heard. In 35 years as a blues guitar fan and player.
Man, everything that Jimmy plays is perfect!
Wish I was one of those lucky people what a treat
JEFF IS A BASS PLAYERS DREAM....
You can take all the guitar lessons on earth but it won't teach you how to play like Jimmy. He's got "THE THANG" !!!
Thanks! The acoustic cloud is at 22' and the ceiling is at 24'. It is a beautiful space! Subscribe to this channel and/or the G+ page for "The Miraverse" and we'll send notices out if there are more videos to post.
Yeah, he's one of the greats.
Jimmy makes it look so effortless..
I think I found a new favorite!
True story. I passed a sign today for Aberdeen Ave. I looked up the meaning of Aberdeen. According to Wikipedia it means, "at the mouth of the Don." The river Don in Scotland. Then I see this YT recommendation. Nice tune. Great players.
He almost makes it sound like he’s using a slide. Very vocal, poetic and comforting playing.
What a Band......
ever green music ... thank yuo very very much !!!
Wow... i just found this guy and he sounds phenomenal.
Fantastic band!
Fantastic. Thx for posting.
I am really glad to watch this video. I love this so much. Thank you for uploading.
So tasteful notes selection and playing.
OMG....Super Duper Tone... Drums too lol.
Thank you for this. Greetings from Subic Bay, Philippines
I am such a fan of Jimmy and his playing! Thanks for the upload!
A master 🙏🎼
This ought to be a theme song for something. Everything is just well,"right".
Damn,I'd like to see these guys live. That guitar tone just crying.
I think Jimmy is one of the best out there ..
Best guitarist alive
Beautiful stuff here, thanks for posting.
What a killer Tone!
Nice. Aberdeen is one of my favorite tracks from the last album.
Really nice. My new favorite song.
I m guitar player for like 7-8 years i love all styles metal jazz blues everything but dude when u hear this it is just so good that i cant belive it....Unbelivable touch on guitar great melodies and such a sweet vibrato ...Ty Jimmy!
+Stefan Bulatovic check out guthrie govan and greg howe ! also great players
+bram19502 y i know them both im big fan of Guthrie like last 4-5 years :) everything he do is just perfect.
Thanks 🙏
Top shelf all the way Jimmy
holly molly, this was amazing!! 10/10!!
Jimmy Herring is Gerry Donahue, Jeff Beck and John McLaughlin all rolled into one
This guy is amazing!
one of the best guitarist
I know this is 7 years old, but it’s odd watching Jimmy play a Telecaster, or any guitar without a humbucker in it, for that matter. Even his Strats had dual humbucks. I dig his single coil tone here, and obviously he would sound great playing anything, but I think his tone these days with his arsenal of PRS guitars is the best he’s ever sounded.
Wow…that’s just so good..
Jimmy's touch is so expressive, you could think he plays using a bottleneck if you close your eyes (especially around @0:32 sec), and perfect ideas and tone.
The way Jimmy Herring is chewing an invisible gum when playing reminds me of Roy Buchanan.
Inspirational!
Jimmy has such a great relaxed right hand ...
The best part of Jimmy is the way he thinks. Like Allan Holdsworth, he always surprises you and takes your breath away with a choice. Even a simple choice that catches you off guard. One of my hands-down, all-time faves. Yay, Jimmy!
well said
Actually Guthries favorite modern guitarist is Derek Trucks. I'm sure he is Herring fan too. herring, holdsworth, govan, howe, henderson, huchings, kotzen (when he doesn't sing), lane, Allen Hinds all on the top of funky and tasty fusion chart.
+Robert Trammel and Frank Gambale..
+ Robben Ford and Greg Koch
this is a point of discussion. IMHO Jimmy H thinks in a different, almost opposite way to AH. Herring's Guitar Player columns show his 'jam band' ethos of maximising scale and pentatonic patterns over familiar (and unfamiliar) harmonies, with inside note choices to become as versatile as possible with as much soul as can be maintained. Then he adds a singing tone and great touch to his leads (hear that Indian Raga inspired meltdown at a dutch festival). AH made it a point (at leats later in his evolution) never to play a pattern, always to improvise without cliches (a difficult task) and spend a lot of the time as outside the harmony as he could get. Both are great players of course, but AH was next level (hear his Red alert solo at yoshis...).. peace and love
