  • The title of video is straight forward. If you have this issue 90 percent of the time it's simply the battery. The hard part is removing the battery from the base...Reminder: if you have a newer model style smoke detector you will need to reset the smoke detector I show you how to reset it at the end of the video.

Thanks. I have wired detectors all over my house, with battery backup. Do I need to turn off the power before changing the battery. I have the battery compartment in the front, so I don't need to twist it. Please let me know, thanks!!! (It's been beeping for an hour. 3 beeps and then a pause, over and over. Then it will stop for 5 or 10 minutes, then the pattern starts up again).

We don't have mains powered smoke detectors in residential houses in my country. If somewhere are placed (mandatory in new or rebuild house from 2008 when approbation) its only battery powered 9V most freguent. It start chirp between 7,7-7,35V and must be able work (detect smoke) for 30day and start alarm for 4min when battery low. 8,45V is almost new but after long time it can hold voltage but not charge like battery in clock or remote control with very low long time discharge.

I had 3 new first alert smoke detectors installed to replace the old ones. New batteries were placed in all 3 of the smoke detectors but one of them keeps chirping every minute. I reset it but it still continues to chirp.

Mine, too. I replaced the 9-volt battery with another and it still beeps every 5 minutes or so. So I tried another battery and the same thing. I'll try another battery. I'm probably not resetting it right.

I replaced the battery again, and pushed the reset in for a few seconds. It beeped once, and then the alarm went off.

@@kentclark6420 My smoke detectors are the hard wired 120 volt with the battery back up on the side compartment. After watching this video I looked into more though and learned a few things. 1: Some smoke detectors have a processor that hold old error codes that should be cleared after battery replacement but sometimes it doesn't. That will cause it to chirp until you perform a manual/hard reset. 2: There is a silence button on many of the smoke alarms that can accidentally be pressed when installing the detector or when replacing batteries that will cause it to chirp every 45 seconds. A manual/hard reset will also fix that issue. 3: I learned that the final tip he explains on how to reset the the smoke detector is done differently. To reset an AC unit with a battery backup, you have to turn off the power to the smoke alarm at the circuit breaker. Remove the smoke alarm from the mounting bracket and disconnect the power. Remove the battery from the unit. Press and hold the test button for at least 15-20 seconds. It may chirp or alarm for a few seconds before going silent. Reconnect the power and reinstall the battery. It will chirp once when the power is back on but it won't chirp again.

I've had problems with batteries going out and not resetting the detectors properly, before. But last night it started beeping, and I did the reset to no avail. This morning I went out to the living room, and found the beeping was coming from my weather-alert radio! Oops.

I have a carbon monoxide detector and I had to take the battery out because it wouldn't stop beeping but it carried on so I wrapped it and put it in the shed and it won't shut up

Yeah, even when I disconnect the whole detector from the plug, it still keeps beeping for another day.

What's the point on making a hardwired Smoke Alarm if they're still going to require a battery.. might as well stick with the non-hardwired ones.

    • @kentclark6420

Probably for when the power goes out. Yes, might as well just get the dc one.

The detector was chirping because the battery was 8.45 volts? As opposed to 9.0? You did not buy a smoke detector rather a detector that smokes 9 volt batteries, I suggest you purchase stock in a battery company and always use their batteries. What brand is that detector so I won't buy it.
