My old friend John Rutter looked after the pitch at Wembley and I took his advice on how to care for my own lawn. The first thing he told me was to change my rotary mower for a cylinder mower (min 5 blades) as a cylinder will cut the grass cleanly as opposed to the tearing of a rotary mower. The other tip was to mow the lawn every other day through the growing season. My friend has gone now but each time I get the mower out I know he is looking over my shoulder. Thanks for showing this video, brought back some happy memories.
Cheers Matt for the phone call and the advice that you gave me about my lawn plus getting me back 10% off my grass seed and fertiliser order thanks again mate. Keep up the good work you do
Came across your channel and I was really impressed with the content and I've subscribed. Great to see a UK channel on lawn care. I am a complete beginner to lawn care and found the videos and tips really easy to follow. I would be interested in weed identification and the treatments you would recommend and a yearly lawn plan for care/maintenance. Keep up the excellent work and I look forward to the next video.
Great to see a UK lawn channel. I’m a big fan of the little Bosch cordless mowers too. We have slightly bigger gardens but one is on a slope so the lightweight Bosch is great. I find a slight overlap on the stripes helps avoid the straggly bits in between shown here. There’s also a real balance on length of cut. Cutting very tall like this on uk grass types is certainly helpful in summer to avoid drying out but it can encourage the crown to get very high which needs a lot of maintenance (thatch). It’s interesting that a lot of the US UA-cam guys now cut shorter after preaching the cut it long message. I think somewhere in between is about right in the UK. Maybe circa 45mm as an avg cut across the seasons. It also gets very trampled when the kids are on it when it’s very long like yours. Lots of feedback but also puzzled by why you did a mulching edge pass and then switched to bagging for the rest?? I won’t mention the fert incident in the other video 😀 I love my lawns and I honestly think the small fee we pay for Green Thumb is better than messing around with the weed and feed. Just my point of view. Thanks for your content. How is your lawn looking now? Any more videos coming?
Its great to see a UK lawn care channel, I was getting sick of the American OTT video who see to have nothing better to do than work on their lawn. Glad you hear you manage to keep it looking good even with a busy family schedule, and knowing what to do and when to do it. Thanks for the video! Quick Q, have you got an recommendations on Lawn ground levelling, before I go ahead and bring my lawn back to life. I have a lot of bumps and humps, it would be great to have a level lawn. Many thanks :)
Thanks for the feedback! The main thing for me was I do enjoy some of the US channels, especially LCN but I found some of them using products etc that weren't available to me and couldnt find much in the way of UK Lawncare so decided to try it myself! I am about to try a renovation on the front lawn which is not level atall so hopefully will cover some things in that video series when I can!
Your lawn is amazing great video nice to see a UK version to see that we can achieve great results here too. I made a mistake just trying to get my garden looking great and cut too low 2 weeks ago and with the heat it is struggling to pull through any advice
Water it deeply in the morning given this heat, it will bounce back. I did the same when I did the levelling took it down and scalp a few spots but two weeks on looks great. If you haven't already done so put some fert down!
@@GardenLawncareGuy thank you so much for your reply. I have put the 4 in 1 down is that okay or is it best to get just fertilizer. And I will keep on with the watering again thanks :)
This was very useful. I have just new garden and I cut the grass too short. How do I make it look green and fuller like your garden? Also is a push reel mower better option as I have a smart rectangular garden. Also which fertilizer should I use?
raise your mower height, make sure it keeps watered, if you are new to gardening and the lawn has weeds and moss in maybe a 4in1 product is an easy choice, alternative i am about to do a rennovation with A1 lawn products so stay subbed to that and it kight help you out
Thanks for that! I do change my direction and with the electric mower it's very light so not as pronounced as a petrol one but I do like the idea of changing it up
Hi pal. Love your video here ! Can you tell me what model of Bosch this is please ? as My old Bosch has given up ! I’m obsessed with my stripes and this looks great is it a rear roller ? Thanks
Hi thanks for the comment, its the rotak 43 amzn.to/3boQvTK. I've got a full review coming out soon but 3 years on ive had no issues and only a cost to replace the blade when needed. The battery version is more expensive but buying this mower was one of the reasons that got me into lawncare and started the channel. Chuffed with it so far!
Garden Lawncare Guy Your welcome. Thanks for the link and advice. My Bosch 32 despite the plastic roller was good for the price the only downside as you mentioned is the cable as it twisted badly and made it a pain so was going to switch to a Petrol model this time round, would love a Hayter pro rear roller but it’s ££££. Your Bosch has made me think again 👍
Cylinder mowers are your best bet for a perfect lawn better still cylinder mowers with front and rear rollers. Self drive is not a good idea due to not being able to cut long grass they can only swallow so much before getting clogged. Rotary mowers should not tear the grass if you have one keep it sharpened and when cutting long grass make sure the forward speed is reduced to compensate the best practice is to remove the drive belt and slowly push it along giving it time to clear what it is cutting. The best practice is to not let the grass get out of hand in the first place.
Hi, great vid and lush grass. I will take away these cutting tips however my issue is that the ground is solid in long strips of my lawn.nothing grows on it and it looks like dead grass on the soil that is hard to rake up. It is a high traffic area.
Sounds like compaction. You need to aerate and potentially hollow core that area, cover with some top dressing and reseed. The ground has become compacted and needs to breathe before anything will grow there!
Hi would you not be scarifying your lawn in September tho?? Also your seaweed fertiliser would you only use that every 28 days or can you use an evergreen seed fertilizer or would you only use one or other?? At the moment I'm using evergreen seed fertilizer every 4 weeks...Thanks
You can use a seaweed in conjunction with a fertiliser, as seaweed is what’s called a bio stimulant so it’s a little different. Sea weed can be used every 10 days or so, I’d recommend 7-10 days. The fertiliser every 4 weeks is a good practise, and around that frequency is a good idea. Generally the product could be used every 3 weeks without any issues should you wish for this. If you have any more questions I’ll do my best to answer for you, I have knowledge in these things and would be willing to help
Yeah, you are probably right. I want to try and get a thick as possible stripes but in the end I miss bits and would be better double striping or overlapping abit
It is a perfect loan Great job I just wanted to know what type of grass you planted Can you please tell me some advice about my loan I live in Iraq and it's hot in summer so what's type grass you have
Thanks Ali, I use mainly rye grass. In hot climate you can look to keep the lawn longer as that will give it more protection against the heat and depending on water levels setting up a watering system will be important. Finally mow your lawn little and often.
Has this grass got real thin, fine blades? Ive got the usual grass, think its ryegrass with normal sized grass blades but its not very good for stripping :( and my stripes only last 2 to 3 days
That's the most beautiful lawn I've ever seen. Mine is destroyed with patches everywhere! I've tried overseeding and bought 4 patch magic. Soil seems to be repelling it all. I've only just started gardening. What grass is this? I want to buy the seeds and start over.
@@GardenLawncareGuy I just want to get a lush, full lawn. No pets at all but daughter likes to take the slide on and run around it. Spent the night looking at what you use (aftercut) and it looks great! Just can't wait until everywhere has a big packet in stock. Does the spreader only do 80 square meters? Need 100.
I have a question. Here your lawn looks amazing. I appreciate your making these videos to make money but your recent treatment seems odd and do you expect next August that your lawn will look that much better?
2 inches sounds fine, I prefer a longer cut and you will have a good balance of length and protection with slightly longer grass. The key thing is its mowed regularly that will encourage it to thicken up
Yes the 43li is the same as what I use. It has a plastic roller on the back and that one has two batteries which do add up the cost. A petrol rear roller hayter will probably give better stripes but I really like my bosch personally and it stripes my garden up pretty good.
Can you please explain how to make these perfect layers? I can see you mow on opposite directions rather than going one way. Is that the trick? Thank you
Yes you need to go in opposite directions as the stripes are actually made by the way the grass is pushed down, you also need a roller on your lawnmower which helps push the grass down!
Garden Lawncare Guy is having a roller on your mower essential ? Your garden looks amazing I would like to master the art of making the stripes on my lawn
If you want stripes then a roller is essential and the stripes are achieved by the frass being rolled down in different directions. You can either have an add on roller, and separate roller that you fill with water or one build into your mower. You can still have a great lawn without a roller but you need it for lawn stripes
You would get a much better quality cut from a reel mower but I really like the portability and lack of maintenance on the electric mower. Also with reel mower you tend to go for a lower cut which can be more maintenance as the grass will benefit more from applications given how short. Finally I actually prefer the look of a slightly longer cut, it's all a preference thing :D
I'm experimenting will different heights but recently I'm going for 30mm. Normally I would be say to raise your height by 1 setting in the summer but as I'm already at 30mm its not too low and I'm generally looking after the lawn enough for that to be fine. If you were cutting very low then yes I would raise the height over the summer to help reduce stress

So you start with best quality turf, recently to get a good lawn. Rather than try and renovate the old tired lawn?
When I moved in there was no grass atall, the lawn is 3 years old now and still looks great! Rowlawn is definitely good quality
I have terrible ant mounds on my lawn. I level it every year but they always return. Yellow ants everywhere

How do you get stripes in your lawn? I noticed you haven’t attached anything to the mower to enable the stripes

Look for a mower with a build in roller, it works best for me with a lighter longer cut and following a clear stripe pattern when mowing.
