been doing this for quite a while the only thing I find is I run out of energy. so I made up a metre square out battening and I do a square metre at time flip the metre over and do another one. When I have had enough I stop and leave the metre square where it is and come back to it next day I haven't lost where I got to.This way I can do the whole lawn. Absolutely agree with you about digging the fork in and then heaving it up.Since watching your videos I now look at the lawn completely differently and treat it more like a plant than 'lawn'
Harry glad to help, most people don't understand that its a jungle under your lawn and it's teeming with life, once we get the basics right, we creat the conditions for the lawn and it will thrive
what a great tool the rubber rotor paddle is that will clear leaves ,probably light dusting of snow from any lawn ,i thought youd have done forking last but i guess it dont matter it,s still opening up and loosening the soil below the grass water will still drain anyways
I know Jim Arthur in his book practical greenkeeping mentioned Scottish greenkeepers 'raise forking' and a skilled team could lift the turf without disturbing the putting surface in the slightest. He says what is this but verti draining with the only thing that changes is the need to do things more quickly. I agree 100% with him.
Many lawns here are on soil that used to be thickets or weedy meadows. Solid tines are popular instead of hollow because they don't bring up soil that might have weed seeds in it and herbicides have many restrictions.
Lovely part of the world, I haven't been that far over, though have been out to Calgary a few times It must be hard to manage a lawn with no weed control.
Hey Robbie thanks for the videos. I’ve been using spike shoes to aerate as the manual core aerators have proven troublesome for me and the fork takes ages. Do you think this gives a benefit?
That's kind of the point of this video, start and do small sections, the important areas first and work your way out The shoes are a complete waste of time in my opinion
Nice video mate and the paddle is awesome. Anything to make work easier is a definite..I can see how it's got advantages.. hopefully fairly fast, maybe not as fast as a blower but at least it's not blowing stuff all over borders.. quite interested
Great video, as always. Should you hollow tine aerate a clay lawn, like I've got here in Hampshire, England? I've heard not but I'd appreciate your opinion as you mentioned clay cores in your video
Thank you for your video. I‘m planning to aerate my front lawn this weekend. Can you please tell me, how often do I need to do this in winter: once a week, once a month, once per winter? Thank you very much!
I need to get stuck in but the weather's been apocalyptic here in sunny Wales 🙄 I need to seal a new patio we had installed too but we haven't gone two days without heavy rain I love some of the music choices in your videos, is there any chance you could list it in your video descriptions?
As it's been so damp it's the perfect time to aerate by hand 👌 Can't see you getting the right weather to seal for a good few months now. The music for my videos are paid for through a website
We have our office at the end of our garden which means walking over the lawn during winter. What do you recommend to avoid damaging it too much? Someone suggested rubber mats? Thanks. Will be doing this over the next few weeks
Rubber mats can work, dug in and let the grass grow through, if you just throw them down, the grass will grow through them but the lawn mower will hit them and you will curse yourself each time you cut the lawn and it won't look that great
@@Premier_lawns_official In Co.Galway, Ireland. We seeded our new lawn 5 weeks ago, but it's very slow to grow in the compacted area. Wondering if aerating it is the next best step.
@@Premier_lawns_official It was turned over with a digger, but then the digger was going back and fourth on it after it was leveled unfortunately, which compacted it a lot. I honestly didn't know any better. Now that I'm watching your videos I know that was a mistake, so just trying to fix that mistake now, and aeration seems to be the only solution that comes to mind. Hi @Premier_lawns_official, sorry to bother you again. Just wondering what brand compost or soil is best to put into the aerated holes in order to help the compacted soil? Should some sand or gypsum also be mixed in?
What is the hardiest grass for heavy traffic areas with a bit of shade? It doesn't have to match the rest of the lawn as there is a slope down to the main part. In Ontario.
I don't have that much experience of them to be honest. I hired out a brush a few years ago and used it for a video on driveway cleaning. Apart from that I'm not sure I have used their other tools
This, like spike shoes are actually compressing the soil… This is not aeration. To aerate, you need to pull plugs out and backfill with sand.. think about this.. if you’re driving something into the ground, the soil has to go some place, so what happens is the soil around the spike gets compressed….
I want to know about the leaves falling robbie. If i mulch them wit lawnmower then the grass dies on me. And raking them is way to much work for such a msssive garden. Leaf blowers are expensive. Is it true mulching small amounts off leaves into the lawn help it grow or is that lies ?
Great time of year to aerate... Though some of that will depend on what you are trying to achieve. Forking or spiking is good as it helps get the water from the surface (think moss) and drain away down into the soil
@@Premier_lawns_official would solid tining be a better option, I’ve got the same weather as yourself but would definitely want to do this if it would help as I do have moss issues.
I’m just not sure of the reasoning behind the “removal of the cores”. What exactly are you trying to get rid of? Seems aeration is good with the tines, but removing cores not practical on any large garden.
What's a typical cost for an aerator? I'm trying to sort my garden out for my son to play football on all year round without it looking like a non league.... I havent been successful and have no idea how they keep those pitches the way they do all year round
This definitely works, i had a large patch of grass i grew from seed, originally there were stones slabs there so when i removed the crap under the slabs, much sand and and gravel i found the soil underneath rock solid i dumped in about 2 tones of soil in that section to bring it up to ground level and although the grass grew there it started off really green and growing well then started to go back and become very thin bladed grass and some parts turning yellow i can only assume the roots had hit that hard layer of soil and couldnt go no further, so used a garden fork and put several holes in the patch of grass and now it looks amazing....Wimbledon like grass i would of never of known about this trick if it wasn't for this channel, your tips and how too have been a massive help with seeding a whole new lawn from scratch and getting the grass to look its best.
Your fork has a big curve mine is straight thus better for aeration, when you pull the fork out you are lifting the turf up, not good, walking over the area you have just used the fork is not good in my opinion
Thank you for a really helpful video.
I will now get my fork out & ONLY DO THE WELL USED AREAS OF THE LAWN.
You have saved me a lot of work.

I did the ford method to my lawn after killing the grass off and before reseeding it and it made a huge difference to the look of the lawn
Aeration is key to healthy soils. Healthy soil =. Healthy lawn

I think you probably can use the paddle for snow clearance.
Good skills mate! Nice mower.

The paddle broom made light work of those cores, you could probably lay some stripes down with it if you really wanted to!
