Wow this is a real timepiece. They had such a magic back then. If I saw that band at a festival now it would stop me in my tracks. Thank you for uploading this
I was at that wow! brought back memories.I'm from Leixlip originally. gone on to see U2 over 40 times since that day. They've come along way since the plastic piping back drop ha ha !!!
A friend of mine gave me an album in 1980, he said, “This band will be big some day”. I loved “Boy” by U2 from the first listen. I saw the October tour and How to Dismantle. God, faith and U2. ✌️
I was also there, I was 14 years old. I saw U2 at SFX before, and really liked them. But was also a police and squeeze fan, until that day. They were awful, but U2 were excellent, even though the sound that day was lost in those fields. I didn't know Paul Young at the time! Cheers to my dad for dropping us off from Bray and collecting us.❤
There's more footage of this on the 11OTT vid and the A Day w/o Me vid, both from 1980, although they're over-dub vids of the studio songs over the vid footage for the songs at this performance.
3:20+ is the ending of Saturday Night. One of the few gigs they performed it. On the studio Saturday Night recording the equivalent time is about at 4:34 in the song.
U2 played at my college gig before Leixlip Castle. We were avid fans of the Police and were disappointed at the reaction of fans on the day at Leixlip Castle on the day in 1980!
Wonder if we went to the same college? I saw them in our college in February 1980! Brilliant gig. Great energy. Just knew they would be BIG one day. Met all of them afterwards and got their autographs! 😍
Was there both as a huge Police fan and also a U2 fan, my brother having picked up the U23 single on vinyl (limited, numbered edition). Great day out, I was 15 going on 16 at the time and was blown away by the sheer energy coming from the stage when U2 came on. The Police set was dampened at one point when some idiot throw a bottle at the band and it hit Stewart Copeland on the leg.
I remember this too, they stopped the gig for a bit, it was a girl who threw the bottle. Great day, I was the same age as you, U2 stole the show I thought.
Set list: 1. 11OTT 2. Another Day 3. Another Time, Another Place 4. An Cat Dubh / into the Heart 5. Shadows and Tall Trees 6. A Day without Me 7. Twilight 8. Saturday Night 9. Electric Co.
A lot happened that day. The trajectory of U2 took off. Alas, concert goers defaced the castle a tad, and walked inside to use the bathroom. The honourable Desmond Guinness, owner, was taken aback.
U2 fans were getting restless at the time and during the pause between bands all hell broke loose between bouncers and the U2 fans! As a result me and my cousin got caught in between the bottle throwing and fighting between the U2 fans and bouncers. Subsequently I got hit with a bottle knocked out and lifted over the stage barrier to the St. Johns ambulance tent along with my cousin. Only to find out the next night we had made the front page of the Irish Evening Herald which headlined that a fan had fainted at the Police Concert! Oh how wrong where they LOL!
So funny the way the crowd is looking at the camera like they hadn't been in front of one very much. Sure is different now, where several fans have their own cameras and everybody is used to seeing them all around. 40 years of progress?? Maybe, maybe not!
Pretty good footage from RTE .. notoriously crap at documenting any music - virtually nothing in the RTE archives regarding music in Ireland - staging very primitive .. almost stacked pallets! The Police headlined that day.
this is amazing. been a fan since 82 and this is the first time i've seen this.
This was my first concert. I went to see the Police but my mate said you have to hear this band called U2. After this concert I was hooked on U2.

I envy you so hard 😂
I can never forget the reception that the police got that day!
Was there that day and have never ever seen this footage until today. Been searching for at least 15 years 🎉🎉❤❤❤
I love that

Magical early U2. Though concert was not complete, and couldn't see the last part.
Little did people know that this little band from Dublin would be the biggest band in the world one day.I didn't.😉✌
You are right my friend.
I so agree with you.
That bass line on The Electric Co. Wow !

Was there. John Otway played an insane set. Highlight for me
Where In The World Did This Super RARE U2 Footage Come From ? I would LOVE to see entire unedited concert ! Thanks for sharing this !
I'd imagine this is all that exists of it. Perhaps intended for TV news coverage of the concert?
@@cftvdata That would explain it thanks
There’s more video on UA-cam but without live audio

At 0:04 the girl with the long dark hair may be Eithne Brennan (Enya) 😃🎶 Like U2, she is also a very successful Irish musician to this day 🌟
Needless to say we since have found a new respect for U2 x :)

Like a time machine….
Looks like Paul Young as the opening act
Paul Young and the QTips.

U2 supported The Police at this concert
