This is brilliant. In the space of 4 minutes bono manages to launch a mic stand at the edge, split his leather pants, get redressed, forget the words, climb a lighting rig and dive at the audience. Love it 😂
Adam's bass is amazing on this tune. I know everybody talks about Edge and Bono and so they should, but, the other 2 are brilliant musicians. Adam and Larry are masters at their instruments.
I can never forgot what an swedish pop magazine said about Adam Clayton "he is the musician who have taken the best lott in the world to play in the most famous rock band and be so talentless".
His playing suits the band, so in that sense, yes he is a good bassist. Moreover it looks to me like he finished this song with only one string, hence the new ordery type bass at the end. To break 3 bass strings is going some.
Great times - missed this 1 but 1st saw them age 15 in 79 with Talking Heads and OMD . After the gig Bono was handing out fliers and tried to get me along to their Hope and Anchor gig - great he took so much effort with a spotty kid. I told him 'Great band, mate.' I walways imagined I'd be supporting them one. The only great song they had that night was 11 0'clock'. One of the all time great rock bands. I was a bit sad when they went so massive after October. Still got some good memories tho.
I remember watching this video for the first time on bootleg video in 1988 and it sent shingles all round my body and to this day this is my favourite live video of any band and still sends shingles all over. Totaly love it
I agree, the footage is sped up. If they played at this speed, The Edge would have adjust the dotted eighth delay setting to a higher tempo. Unlikely as it would throw a massive curve ball to the other members of the band, particularly Larry as no doubt he'll be playing to a click track tempo that is synced to Edges delay settings.
I just listed to a YT channel "U2 - Why Do People HATE Them?... I List The Reasons". In return I referenced this video, one of the greatest rock videos of all time. No thinking, just an inspired musical orgasm.
I can't believe i've found this. I was 17, crushed against the barrier stage right to see "MY" band! Can still clearly picture the girl in a blue sailor oufit I couldn't nerve myself up to talk to, and feel the bruise developing as my chest worked against the scaffold pole to keep me breathing. Thank you Mr Weirdo!
I saw em in 83 on “War Tour” at Tower Theatre in Upper Darby P.A ( Philadelphia Area ) during Electric Co. Bono climbed up to balcony level and jumped into audience, they crowd surfed him back to stage, amazing, That always a comes back to me when I see clips of their early performances. ☘️🇺🇸
@@markmanjardi3127 Yeah man, that one definitely makes my top ten best shows ever !!! I grew up in Claymont DE and got too see many great shows at The Tower, The Spectrum (first concert KISS 78’) Vets Stadium and JFK 😎🎶
Excellent Live performance recording quality Sound with the freshness of a Baby Post Punk Band. The Sound is powerful dynamic energetic rich & genuine like a Atomic Sonic positive energizing 🌊🌊!
Can anyone here believe that this is nearly 40 years ago???!!! I saw them in 1980, in Atlanta - with no more than 300 people there. They were nobodies - but really good ones! And a quick comment about The Edge - I would say that he my well be the last famous rock guitarist who left a huge influence on so many - primarily per how he uses sound effects so - well, haha, effectively!
For a couple of reasons, I'm pretty certain the increased tempo heard here is due to the audio tape having been sped up. Back in those days U2 tuned down a half-step for live performances (as was also the case with their first 3 studio albums), so, 'Electric Co.' would be in D-flat, yet here it's in standard D. You can see a different performance of 'Electric Co.' from the same year, which is in the regular key of D-flat: ua-cam.com/video/tfrOsY-K4NA/v-deo.html When bands play songs at faster tempos during shows, it's usually done unconsciously due to adrenaline rushes, but U2's tempos were/are dictated by Edge's delay settings (there was no tap tempo available back then), so if they spontaneously kicked up the tempo it would sound like a big mess, and that's not the case here. I suppose Edge could have purposely changed his delay setting for this performance, but that seems unlikely. So, I think someone tried to "pitch correct" the original audio tape of the performance with the half-step down tuning and the typical tempo of @162bpm, by speeding it up so the pitch would go up a half-step, which then made the tempo go up around 9-10bpm, which is pretty substantial. Additionally, if you look at it closely, the video and audio never really quite sync up. I could be wrong.
Agree with you. Great analysis. Plus Bono's voice during the speaking part is higher than normal. Still all sounds brilliant though! My favourite era of U2 and was lucky to see them live in Jan '82 playing this 👏
wow ,to see this , I was at the Moonlight club in West Hampstead ,which they played during this tour .i always thought I was so lucky to see them before they were known . it was a great show .
U2 made such an impression on me on this tour that I sat boozing in the Aston Hall throughout, singing 'On Ilkley Moor ba' t'at' . Mind you. I was there to see Rory Gallagher.
Bono was angry bc he ended up ripping his pants in the beginning half of the video and the audience (inaudibly in this video) started laughing at him. That's why he was yelling "I BOUGHT THESE CLOTHES SO I COULD LOOK LIKE YOU! SO I COULD LOOK LIKE YOU!"
There is so much going on in this. Bono kicks the mic stand into The Edge, gets into an argument with the audience, his fly explodes. Try and keep up, people.
Amazing perfomance!!! Bono is over the top, but also compelling, bringing the audience out of their comfort zone. This was probably because he was playing before Echo & the Bunnymen, THE press favourites back then. U2 performance was even panned by the NME. The review said "...U2 really are quite awful". Can't believe it!! I mean, hints of future triumphs were already there...
It was an unintentional speeding up with vid tape re-recording during the 1980's with whoever was copying the original tape for distributing to fans/archive collectors.
They can't sing. They can't play. They can't keep time. They look awful. And still, they are 100 times better than the band they are today. Some of us are old enough to recall when U2 were the most exciting band on earth. Those were great days. I don't blame them for getting old, we all do. But you just do not see bands like this anymore...
thanks, i have been looking into changing the speed, i downloaded it and can slow it down, but I don't think I can save it again. I am sure there are applications which will allow you to save it again (might have to pay). several players allow you to change the speed, I used QuickTime but the control is a bit crude, there may be better ones. Then I am guessing a bit at the original speed.
i though it sounded fast by I put that down to their youth untill i read your comment, the i thought why would anyone speed it up? someone says it is due to the encoding which sounds plausible i suppose.
This is brilliant. In the space of 4 minutes bono manages to launch a mic stand at the edge, split his leather pants, get redressed, forget the words, climb a lighting rig and dive at the audience. Love it 😂
Don’t forget launching into a tirade.
@@thicctac4108 I mean, really. What was going on with that?!
Cocaine is a helluva drug.
Also quote "Send in the Clowns"!
Who is this guy and where is Bono??
This is how I want to remember U2
Yes!!!!
Adam Clayton isn't a brilliant bassist in anybody's book.. and this from a big U2 fan
His playing suits the band, so in that sense, yes he is a good bassist. Moreover it looks to me like he finished this song with only one string, hence the new ordery type bass at the end. To break 3 bass strings is going some.
Yes, they are...
They aren't masters. Perfect for U2 though.
What else is there to say about this....just .... magic....U2 ... legends
By far one of my favorite U2 songs, and performances.
Great times - missed this 1 but 1st saw them age 15 in 79 with Talking Heads and OMD . After the gig Bono was handing out fliers and tried to get me along to their Hope and Anchor gig - great he took so much effort with a spotty kid. I told him 'Great band, mate.' in 1979 it would've been Silver Lining, not 11 0'clock
Man, Larry's kit is rocking, like literally rocking! How hard must he have been pounding on those skins!
I remember watching this video for the first time on bootleg video in 1988 and it sent shingles all round my body and to this day this is my favourite live video of any band and still sends shingles all over. Totaly love it
I wish they still played those early tunes and had that same energy.
They did played their early songs like Electric Co and Out of Control. They still got it imo.
@@zackzallie8735 I think they play Electric Co better now.
And they've always played it really well.
@@scottsmith4197 Yeah, although Bono couldnt reach like those older days.
@@scottsmith4197 They played Electric Co best in 1980-81. The play Electric Co. fairly unconvincingly in the modern era.
They were 19. Cannot replicate that energy 45 years later.
Just be grateful they still perform. So many bands from 1980 are no longer with us.
This is fucking awesome! Punk U2 is my favorite U2.
The best comment here. Man, this got me off. No one can stay young forever, but this is amazing
Love the energy!!
One of fastest live versions of one of U2's fastest songs - Electric for sure. Thanx for posting.
It's a speeded up recording/film. They didn't play at this pitch and speed. The played in Eflat, but this vid is higher pitch.

Holy shit! They were possessed!!! Best live version ever???!
Best
It is the best live version!!! In 4 minutes bono manages to kick his mic stand at the edge, rip his pants and launches into a fight with the crowd
I'll have a pint of whatever Bono's drinking!
I'm going for speed
They were incredible you could see something special about them back then

Bass playing is overlooked on this really good , some proper energy and passion going on here my fave U2 era 1980/84
