I always thought it was such great casting. Not just the acting ability but Sally Struthers really did look like Carroll O'Connor with the blue eyes and facial expressions.

Sadly, Sally lost her biological father shortly BEFORE her role as Gloria.
Sally looked up to Carol as a " father figure ".
She had his personality at times as well...what an actress!
This is a master class in acting.
Personally, I gotta say that I really enjoyed admiring "Michael Stivic" for standing up always for himself against his narrow-minded father-in-law, "Archie Bunker," for the insults thrown at him for years on "All in the Family"! BRAVO!

I get that Mike needs to show appreciation for being allowed to stay at Archie’s house for free while he studies, but just because Archie lets him live there for free doesn’t give him the right to call him names or disrespect them, if that had differing political views they should have done what adults should do agree to disagree instead of pushing each others buttons. But in a way I don’t blame mike for not respecting Archie because Archie doesn’t respect him even if someone allowed me to stay at their house for free and provide for me I wouldn’t tolerate being talked down to or insulted either and I would fight back so to speak. Lastly people need to remember Carrol o conner was nothing like Archie Bunker in real life

All the years Mike lived with Archie he could’ve gotten himself a part-time job and gone to school at the same time lots of people did it and helped out with some of the utility bills. He was always making excuses Archie dropped out of school to help support his family.
There was, in fact a time when Mike did get a part-time job at a gas station. It was to earn two-hundred dollars that Archie felt he owned him. Furthermore, maybe it was because Archie dropped out of school that he never learned that calling someone a dumb Pollock would never get him anywhere.

This cast was amazing. It takes real talent as an Actress/Actor to portray a character. It takes top tier talent to not only play that character but to play that character mocking another character embodying 2 characters at once. It comes off as completely genuine.

Absolutely no one forced Mike to live in Archie's house for five years, rent-free. He and Gloria could have enjoyed a nice long engagement until he graduated and got a job. At LEAST, he could have gotten a part-time job while he went to school and contributed to the family's expenses.
