You got that right! "All in The Family" was and still is the King of Sitcoms. There is a whole generation of people who have never seen any of the '70 Sitcoms. I think the Networks should rerun them all. They would make a ton in advertising. Most Celebrity's Estates are never settled so they can continue to make money on reruns. So the check has somewhere to go. There is nothing wrong with the families getting the money.

Number 4 was the worst. That character Stefanie had zero personality and did absolutely nothing for the show. Buying the bar was ok but Mike and Gloria could have stayed married and living in New York and came by the bar once in awhile and Edith dying, that was just bad. I think Jean wanted off the show to do other acting projects if I’m thinking right. But yeah you got it pretty much right.

In all reality , by the time the 80’s came Rob Reiner was busy making lots of movies and creating Castle Rock Entertainment. No way he was going to be on “Archie Bunkers Place “ or “Gloria” , so they wrote him off via divorce. Better than having his character die off , I guess.
Or it would have been better to not make this show at all. Edith, Archie, Mike, and Gloria were best when they were all together. All in the Family should have ended when Mike and Gloria moved to California.
My parents weren't perfect but they did love each other and stay together for 60 years until mom passed away. I know the divorce through friends messes up kids. They're right in the middle.

The problem with this show is that it was built on a faulty premise. There’s no way Mike would have abandoned his family that way. I can see Gloria and Mike grow apart and divorce, but I don’t think Mike would have run off the a commune and I don’t think Gloria would have moved her child 3000 miles from his father. And don’t get me started on the whole veterinarian premise. The writing stunk too.
It was a great premise. She moved 3000 miles with the intent to live with Archie and Stephanie. The vet opportunity arose from there. It was screwed up when CBS took the show away from CoC, who then wanted nothing to do with the show.
It was over before Edith died. Season 1 of ABP should have been it. Should have been cancelled at the end of season 1. No seasons 2-4…no Gloria spin-off…

This scene clearly illustrates why the series stank and didn't last long, Sally Struthers was fantastic in her supporting role on ":All In The Family," however, that doesn't automatically translate being able to "star" in your own spinoff example: "The Ropers." Struthers just wasn't strong enough to carry the show on her own, it could have had a chance with co-starring Rob Reiner but he likely declined if he had been offered, a wise decision. Not exactly clear what role the "great" Norman Lear had, but even tv royalty can have a turkey now and then.
Yes, a lot of supporting actors and actresses who were brilliant in their roles simply could not carry their own shows. Probably because supporting characters can get away with being ditsy and zany all the time, but when they become lead characters, they have to turn serious, and so their entire purpose is gone.
Is this available on dvd? I don't know how many episodes there were but I need to buy the ABP dvd's and this, it's part of the AITF story. Joey's a sweet little boy and you have to love him!

I watched Gloria on CRACKLE, within the last year, maybe it is still there. This scene is really well done, but a lot of the series is pretty cringe-y.
Life happens, and sadly Archie was right about Mike. I don't think either of them would have gotten married had it been for Archie though. Even in my family we had an example of this. My Aunt married a guy like Mike (he even was Polish) family despised him and she probably wouldn't have married him had things took their course (this was back in the 70's). However she did, still is married to him and is still miserable (mom even suspects the reason the aunt hits the vodka bottle regularly is because of him). My mother married a total hick who had a violent and controlling demeanor. She managed to get divorced and has made her life go on. Sometimes people act rationally (like Gloria) and sometimes they don't (like Mike). People get afraid, they question things and they seek safety and security where they think they won't have to worry. Some people eventually change their minds, others accept the consequences thinking that's what they deserve.
An even bigger mistake than having Mike and Gloria divorce (okay, perhaps that was the only viable way for Sally to get her own show) was having Lionel and Jenny divorce in The Jeffersons. There was absolutely no reason for that.
Lionel and Jenny did divorce in the final season of The Jeffersons. There’s a two part episode where they announce the divorce and they are on friendly terms; it’s their parents who start battling.
They should have ended this on a good note. They ended both this and ABP at the same time and that was it for the history of the Bunkers and Stivics. The way they should have ended this was Mike coming back and he and Gloria getting back together. Archie and Stephanie would guest star. That’s how this show should have ended its first season, whether it got renewed or not. Just a several part finale where the two get back together and Archie is there one last time.
Joey loves his mother to the point where to him she is the most beautiful smartest, greatest person in the world and you know what she should appreciate that.

It’s not the divorce that messes the kids up it’s how the parents act afterwards.
The divorce from Mike is a bit too unsettling and in my opinion doomed this show's future.

I agree. They knew ahead of time that the show was not being renewed, and I am sure Rob Reiner would have come back to do the last episode.

They should have maybe killed off the meathead's character, maybe in a protest, by a political opponent, making Gloria a widow instead of a divorcee.
I don't think Rob Reiner wanted to play Mike anymore, or else the spinoff would have likely been "The Stivicks"
