I learned how to knit and read only a few years ago! After 30 years of knitting and expanding my repertoire of stitches and techniques, and knitting a whole lot of garter-stitch based patterns, I came to the point of not only being able to watch TV while I knit but soon discovered I could read as well. Family and friends seeing me do this thought I was playing a hoax on them to show off. That was until I started to read out loud(!) what was printed on the page. Even went so far as to let them choose what page to read, in case they thought I had memorized the text. I felt ACCOMPLISHED by this milestone and like you have not only been enriched by combining two loves, have been able to finish many more projects that I might have otherwise abandoned due to boredom! Thanks for your entertaining and informative videos!
Girl you could describe paint drying and draw us in…. We would all have to try it. Watching paint dry that is. Please keep sharing your joy! It’s contagious❤
That is such a generous compliment. Thank you so much. ❤❤❤
Regarding the little library, bravo! Especially during the pandemic, I was so grateful for all the little libraries in my neighborhood and on the way to work, I can't even find enough words. Apparently the appreciation goes both ways, because one time when I was dropping off a few mystery novels on my way to work, the owner of the house appeared in her doorway, still wearing her towel from getting out of the shower (!!), just to say "thank you." I don't know who it was who first thought of these things, but I like to think of it as a Great Moment in History. 🤩💯
Excited to catch up with y'all today! Enjoy. ❤
PS: apparently I felt the need for color while editing this one. The overall saturation is quite intense. 😅😬
Your book seat might be just the answer to my desire to “do all the things.” I have so many things I want to do that I feel frustrated just doing one “thing” at a time. Seasons of creativity. I have about 20. Can I fit them all in one year? 😂
Totally know the feeling! And yes. This book seat has made it possible for me to make progress on both my knitting and my reading and I love it!
Oh my gosh. Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine, George Sanders... "Rebecca" is such a great movie. I love old movies.
I'm not skilled enough to read and knit, but I listen to Audible a lot. Right now, I'm designing a capelet/hoodie and listening to the Skyward series by Brandon Sanderson. It's kinda like Harry Potter in space with psychic powers/multiple dimensions instead of magic.😁
Rebecca is one of my all-time favorites! Enjoy!!
Congratulations on the little free library!
I love that you’re so excited about reading. Unfortunately I cannot read and knit at the same time, so my go to is audiobooks. I listened to Rebecca a few years ago and loved it - a 5 star book for me. I’ve also read My Cousin Rachel by Daphne du Maurier which is also excellent. I loved your free little library. That’s so great for you and your family!!💕
For book recs, I also love most podcasts by Book Riot!
Love everything in this episode and I look forward to your book tube which is clearly happening 😂❤❤❤
I‘m reading „Tress of the emerald sea“ by Brandon Sanderson. Loving it, it’s such a charming story.
As a long time, avid reader I am just in love with your Little Library!!!! What a lovely, generous gift to you neighbours ❤
We read to our kids from the get (hello Peter Rabbit, Franklin the Turtle….) and I am thrilled that as adults they are still readers.
Ditto on Hitchcock; my favs are Dial M For Murder, North by Northwest and Rear Window.
I recommend the other c.s. sansom novels about the Vikings conquering England. Very detailed and sometimes difficult to read. Fantastic!
Currently reading Remarkably Bright Creatures, which is also sort of mystery, and features an octopus as one of the main characters. I would highly recommend, it’s one of my top three of the year so far.
oh Rebecca!! what a book!! Try the Ruth Galloway series by Ellie Griffiths!
REBECCA yeessss Have read and re-read many times over the years. Get the movies!
Love your podcasts! I’ve been a voracious reader for as long as I can remember. However I’m not so talented in being able to “yarn” (knit/crochet) and read so I’m a big fan of audible, which IMO counts as reading 😃 so I can listen to a book while continuing to do whatever fiber craft I’m doing. But I also always have a physical book to read at night in bed. I liked The Maid as well. The Lost Apothecary was an interesting read too, totally different from that one but seems like it would be in the same vein of some of your recent reads. Loving the reading topics, keep ‘em coming!
I agree that Lost Apothecary was great also. I always have 2-4 books going at a time. I just finished an audiobook from the library, am reading The Demon of Unrest in new hardback from the library, a political book on kindle, and a new audiobook ready to start from my library. I could not survive without reading!😂.
I added the tee to my Ravelry- thanks! I love the Veronica Speedwell series❤🕵🏻I also like The Anatomist’s Wife series by Anna Lee Huber.
Hello from Swansea, Illinois.
Hello Janet! Welcome!
I can’t tell, but from what it looks like for the little free library I suggest putting those doors on hinges that help them stay open. They could fall on little fingers otherwise. It’s beautiful though, and 🎉to you for promoting reading!
What an awesome episode. I love to read and knit, so I was eagerly looking up each recommendation!
Yay! I'm so glad you enjoyed this Emily! ❤️
Great job on the Little Library! Love seeing those pop up in neighborhoods. I know you live in the West and so do I so I recommend anything by Mark Spragg or Kent Haruf. Just finished Fruit of Stone by Mark Spragg and I still have the warm glowing feeling. My local libraries all do several big book sales every year. I usually spend around $20 and come home with over 70 books, if not more. I am out of space so I had to hold back a bit this past Spring Sale. After reading I return them to the Friends of the Library to sell again. Highly recommend it if your library does it. Knitting like crazy on Emotional Support Chickens, thanks to you! So fun and a great way to use up all the bits.
I recently read The Maid as well and have the sequel out from the library. Currently reading the new Emily Henry and really enjoying it. The movie of Rebecca is SO good!
You ask "what have you been reading?", well, I have been reading Stephen King, last one I read was"Salems Lot". Really early King book, and really cool. Knitting on shawls, Stephen West, and Curious handmade mkal, and jumped on the purl soho bandwagon, needed a quiet garter thingy, Half and half wrap. So looks like a busy summer for me. Thanks for your videos!!
I love all of this Julia! Super cozy. And I'm telling you, sometimes you just need a cozy garter project and Purl Soho is the best for those sorts of projects.
So I've only ever read two S. King books: Fairy Tale (which was AMAZING) and On Writing (so good...even for those not necessarily interested in writing). My husband is on a SK kick right now and just finished Mr. Mercedes and before that he read Billy Summer. He's fallen pretty hard down that rabbit hole so I expect to see lots more SK on rotation. Enjoy your knits and your reading! ❤️
Love these recommendations! I'm reading the Silo series by Hugh Howey. I'm about to start the heel on my granddaughter's Christmas stocking! Excited to be almost done with that. Then I need to knit my daughter-in-law's stocking. Thanks for sharing!
I have been crocheting a Texas Tech graphgan for a kid about to graduate high school and will possibly be going there in the Fall and some dish towels and things for the kitchen knitting. . I love reading the Robert Gabraith (aka J.K. Rawling) books. Great mysteries.
Oooo this Texas Tech graphgan sounds amazing! And such a cool gift. And I will say, if you're headed to Texas, better do it in the fall when it's not 90+ degrees and 90% humidity. 😂😂 My brother currently lives in Dallas and I love him dearly, but visiting in the summer is just not happening. 🤣 Desert rats, such as myself, don't take too kindly to hot+humid climes.
And I'm a lifelong JK Rowling fan, obvs, and I NEED to read some of her Galbraith books. My husband just picked up The Cuckoos Calling and I'm super excited to read it as well!
I LOVE your free little library!!! 📚
Love Daphne du Maurer, try Jamaica Inn ( I first read it while staying in the real Jamaica Inn)… a really dark story , and please ,please try Frenchman’s Creek xx
So this may come off cheesy, but I swear I got chills when I read that you read Jamaica Inn while staying at the real Jamaica Inn. How incredible! Ok, I need to read it. My husband said he wants to read Rebecca and I told him that I would love to read another du Muarier while he reads that. It has to be Jamaica Inn and then that way I can watch both the movies (Rebecca) and the series (Jamaica Inn).
And then I clearly need to add Frenchman's Creek to my TBR list ASAP. ❤️
I am reading a Sydney Sheldon book and knitting a Berroco, Kelona cardigan. I also sew and I am going through my stash. Trying to use up my knits.
Try The Children’s Book by AS Byatt. You’ll love it!!❤
Loved this quick catch up 💚
Read T.J.Klune. Love his books and so enjoy your podcast especially now since you include books.
You absolutely had me at K+C cotton! I looooove that cotton and it's on sale right now! I just picked up 2 skeins literally today. I just wish there was more colors since there's only like maybe 12 solids. Nonetheless, it's just a great cotton yard, affordable, and very accessible.
Right!? I LOVE it too Jade. It's soft and scrummy while also being sturdy. And the colors (that they do have) are pretty. I would love more though, like you said. But, yes. Such a great yarn.
Congrats on the little library! That is so exciting. I love how it's in a planter with some flowers and lights. Very fancy.
I did just want to mention one thing. I couldn't exactly tell from the video you shared, but since the library is in a planter on the sidewalk and not buried in your yard, it is important to make sure that you leave enough space on the sidewalk for people with wheelchairs and power chairs to get around. The ADA requires sidewalks to be 36 inches wide to be considered wheelchair accessible. 😊
Great post!
There is a free library in our neighbourhood which I make use of and always return them when I finish reading. I love the increases on your blue wip..❤ from England
Rebecca was a favorite of my MIL (both the book and movie). I’ve never read it, but maybe for her birthday in July I’ll crack it open and read in her memory.❤
I'm currently working on the Sailor Swift Tank. Trying to finish by my anniversary, June 7 because I want to wear it. I'm finishing Tolkien's The Two Towers and I recently started Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah.
For both you and your husband, I highly recommend the SunEater series by Christopher Ruocchio. It starts with the Empire of Silence.
I've really enjoyed the audio version of each book. I'm not able to knit and read from a book, so I get the audio versions. I'm waiting for my husband to get into it. He's busy with another series right now.
Ok, so even though I'm an avid Star Wars fan, particularly the movies (though I've read Rebel Rising and my husband has read the Thrawn series as well as some other Outer Rim books), but I never really knew there was a genre called 'space opera' and now I'm hooked on getting into it. I just searched this series and it sounds so good. Space opera, epic fantasy, high stakes, I mean...c'mon. Thank you for the recommendation!
@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS You're very welcome! ☺️
Rebekah!! Such a great book! ❤ Thanks for the Shardlake recommendation, looking forward to reading those.
GM Taylor
I’m just getting back into my reading and liking again and love that you are an avid reader ….❤️❤️❤️ that your family designed a reading library in your yard and sharing your books with others😊 …I’m from in small town Kingsville Ontario and have many throughout the town
I am working with the Lanikai tee a pair of socks and a request from my sister for a second hat I had made for her a few years ago as she loves the fit…and enjoying our long holiday with friends/ family but being retired right now we always have a long weekend lol
I watch those music videos all the time such great ones for all seasons and yes relaxing lol my dog falls asleep and relaxes with them on
You have a great week ahead and thank you Taylor!!!
😊🥰
Good morning Deb! So lovely that you got to spend a long weekend with friends and family. Hope you had a wonderful time. And yay for getting back into reading! Enjoy it. It's just the best. ❤️
I am (at age 76) so excited that you have discovered Daphne du Marier! I binged on her books decades ago. They never grow old.
Rebecca is 0ne of my sll tome favorites. Glad you like it. Couldn't put it down.
My mouth fell open when I saw the yarn you were using. I bought 6 skeins of this yarn in the same color last week with a Joann's gift card! I wanted to make a summer top and was having a hard time coming up with a pattern. I'll be using this pattern and plan on starting this week. I hate knitting in parts and sewing the pieces together so this pattern is just what I was looking for. I am excited to get started.
I'm reading One Door Away From Heaven by Dean Koontz and enjoying it very much. I do most of my reading on my tablet with the kindle app.
Oh! Another good read is the Brother Cadfael series! Medieval detective monk
I love reading and knitting together. I listen to my books thought. I can't read a physical book and knit at the same time, unfortunately. I tried using the clicker and a holder of my tablet but it didn't work. I love the book holder and wish I could use it!
Rebecca is one of my favorite books! The first book of Daphne’s I read was Jamaica Inn - also fabulous! Her descriptions of the sea, in particular, are hypnotic. My Cousin Rachel is a great Gothic manor mystery worthy of checking out too.
I was a librarian for 35 years and only read for fun while I knit (ribbing & stockinette). Once my desire for more complicated knits grew, my reading dropped off like yarnovers. I've changed careers and I'm now trying to find a balance...
I got back into reading by watching the Unresolved Textual Tension book podcast which doesn't just talk about books, it's more like a book club for writers, teachers, etc because they dig down into story structure and prose. It also got me back into writing 10/10 would recommend.
Love your little free library. 📚
Right now I’m finishing up a coffee themed cozy mystery and will start Butter after that. I am knitting my first tee right now and a poncho in flax yarn.
Can’t wait to see what you read next.
Now I need to read Rebecca & The Birds! I never knew they were books.. I'm needing to find out what other Hitchcock movies are just fun books?
Yes! If you're a Hitchcock fan, you really will love Rebecca. Definitely give it a read!
I just finished the audio book “The Berry Pickers” it was good! And I picked up “Nettle & Bone” again. I’m knitting a Maille cardigan for my wedding in June!
I made that sweater - great pattern and a fun easy knit
The book seat is my favorite. It makes knitting and reading a dream. I was very hesitant about the price, but I have no regrets with how much I use it.
I totally know what you mean about the price. I felt the same way and I figured if it wasn't all it was cracked up to be, I'd just return it. But man, oh man. It did the trick! ❤️
Have you read any of Christopher Paolini? I read, and loved, the first three of his Eragon books, then stopped reading before the last one came out. I just picked it up and am going to start reading it. I can’t wait to read the other things he’s written. Thanks for the inspiration.😊
Hi Taylor...right now I've jumped into the rabbit hole of Preston and child's Pendergast series and knitting a bunny for a friend who is becoming a grandmother this July...
Do it! I never thought about book UA-cam. My daughter has a little business called Perfect Book Match and it has been so fun having her find my perfect book and just getting back into reading. It's a thing right now. You really need to jump on it. :)
Thank you for the encouragement Kelly! I think it's happening. We talked about it today and we're both SO ready to do it. ❤️
I've been watching booktubers and other crafters before I learned to knit and started to watch knitters. Ahh... So many rabbit holes...
I know the algorithms like video makers to stick to one subject to do well but I kind of like it when there's a side interest added to expand the burrow.
I agree with you . A little side action never hurt and I figure my podcast is a good place for that. Most of my videos are pretty narrowly focused on one topic/concept so these less focused episodes, that serve more as a catch up, are a natural place to share these things. Thank you for saying so. ❤️
Hello from getting colder Victoria Australia! I’m currently knitting a cardigan for my mother, as well as using up some yarn to crochet a blanket for no one in particular. I read many genres, and my current books are a Tom Clancy’s Code of Conduct (26th in the Jack Ryan series), as well as Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club, and about to start The Last Bookshop in London by Madeline Martin. I have seen that someone else suggested it, but you have to read The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. It is such an unbelievably great book and so different from anything else I’ve read - I really think you’d enjoy it 😊. Love your channel and catching up with you with a cup of tea and whatever current project I’m working on 😄
Hello! How lovely that your moving into cooler temps. I like summer, but I LOVE those liminal weeks when summer begins to recede and the cooler days of autumn come. I'm slightly jealous. 😊 So my husband just picked up Thursday Murder Club and he's getting into it now. I definitely want to read it! And yes! Night Circus is coming soon. I have it sitting on my shelf now and can't wait to read it. I'm thinking it will be my airplane read on our trip to Michigan in a couple weeks. Can't wait! Thank you for the additional encouragement to read it. I keep hearing/reading great things! ❤️
Lol the dramatic tea zoom
"Shardlake" on Hulu was so good! I was excited to see there is a series of books! I am knitting an angry cat stuffed animal (the first stuffed animal I've ever knit) and am reading "The Wandering Hill" by Larry McMurtry. It is the second in a series and I'm enjoying this book. Thanks for the video!
I'm always thrilled to see someone get back into reading. I've been an avid reader all my life, and I think it's because my parents were always readers, and the books they were reading were always lying around the house, we had full bookshelves, and it was just normal to me to read. I was thrilled when I finally graduated from the children's section of the public library, and my first real (non-babysitting) job was in a library.
I just finished rereading the Silo series by Hugh Howey: Wool, Shift, and Dust. Very intense, thriller type science fiction/speculative series. I also just finished reading the first in a new fantasy series, The Broken Queen by Lidiya Foxglove.
Your mention of it prompted me to put Rebecca on hold at the library. I read Jamaica Inn a few years ago, and the short story collection that includes The Birds just last year. I think I might have read Rebecca when I was very young, but I can't remember forsure and I've been meaning to read it, either again or for the first time. Thanks for the reminder.
Congratulations on your tiny free libarary!
Rebecca is a classic! How about Turn of the Screw?
I think you should defiantly do the book channel!
I know I sent a bunch previously that are at my top reads but can I add a suggestion to your list - The Meaning of Night by Michael Cox. I found this at a book sale while on vacation and couldn’t put it down.
I’m reading The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett.
Hi Taylor! If you enjoy science fiction, I cannot recommend enough the author Andy Weir. He's a software engineer turned writer and his books, Artemis, The Martian, and Project Hail Mary are my all time favorites.
Any Weir has a deep understanding of Physics, Math, Biology, Technology, and it shows. In his books, everything makes sense, the math checks out. I can't help but think "this could actually happen". The only fictional part of his books are the scenarios and characters. I'm in awe at his writing skills and scientific knowledge.
Please check him out, especially if you're a massive nerd such as myself.
I’m currently reading Traitors Gate by Jeffery Archer. I’m invested in the story 👏
My last book was Cuckoo Calling by Robert Galbraith (JK Rowling) the first in a series of 6. Well written and keeps you interested 😊
Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin is excellent. It centers on three friends who are video game developers and explores many things including work, play, and the relationships between people as friends, lovers and collaborators.
So sad that C.J.Sansom passed away at the end of April 😢. As i work in a bookshop and i share the same surname (probably related somewhere back up the family tree...) I really should give his books a try. My favourite authors are Tracey Chevalier and Sarah Waters. If you like Edgar Allen Poe, I'd definitely recommend Affinity and also The Little Stranger, both by Sarah Waters.
To be honest, I haven't read a book in 20 years. I used to read non stop when my oldest son was little. I would wait until he went to bed then sit and just read all night. He is now 32 years old. I should start reading again. I have been knitting though like crazy. I have two babyshowers coming up so I Tunisian crocheted two blankets and knitted two hats and now I am making baby booties. Knitted of course to match the hats. I had to put a short-sleeved sweater I was making for my self on hold. I was making it out of cotton/polyester blend yarn. It is really soft and lightweight. I am crocheting it. I have become addicted to Tunisian crochet. Looks like knitting but works up fast like crochet. Best of both worlds. 😁 Sometimes you can find some really good finds in thrift stores. My husband and I go thrifting every weekend. I found some really good knitting books. Also I go for the flower pots. I collect orchids and need flower pots and you can find them really cheap at thrift stores.
Heather, you are a busy woman! And these things your making for baby showers sound lovely! I've heard great things about Tunisian crochet. Toni Lipsey talks about it a lot and I love the look. I need to look into it further. And hey, squeezing in 15 minutes with a good book, may lead to 30 minutes down the road. Never huts to crack into a book and see, I say these days. 😘
As for thrifting, I LOVE it. I'm an avid thrifter and I wish more people would embrace this as a valid form of consumerism and not just a hobby...sounds like you're doing tit right. ❤️
@@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS I am not one to point out typos or things like that, but your typos made me giggle ☺ I had to show my husband. He laughed too. We are like little kids lol
I learned from Toni how to Tunisian crochet. She is the best teacher. I also got a book from a thrift store on Tunisian stitches. It was a good find that day. One other thing, I found a peanut basket as well. It was right after you mentioned getting one on Etsy. I was shocked I found one. I have not seen them since.
I just finished James, by Percival Everett. It's a retelling of the Huck Finn story from Jim's point of view. It was amazing.
You’re too much, with that clip from last week! 😂😂
Rebecca is one of my favorite books! My Cousin Rachel by DuMaurier is fabulous also, almost a prequel of Rebecca. I wasn't fond of the 2020 film but I might have to revisit the Hitchcock version.
I am knitting the Roman Villa Shawl, which was intimidating when I got the pattern, but has been great fun to knit.
I cheat and do Amazon Audible. I'm currently in Drew Hayes' 'Sword, Sorcery & Stealth' series. It's a must if you are or were into RPG games.
Just finished a crochet project in the KxC yarn and was so impressed! Have been toying with the idea of pick some up for a summer knit, may need to take a page from your book (pun intended 🤭) and knit a tee! Are you making the Plain Yoke Tee 20 or 22?
Fun Fact: Hitchcock won his only Oscar for best picture for Rebecca
Glad you are enjoying Rebecca. Check out the 1997 PBS version with Diana Rigg, Charles Dance, and Emilia Fox. I liked it better than the latest 2020 version.
Like the blue - both on my screen and your description.
My current project is a pair of colourwork mittens so no dabbling at reading at same time. Straight stockinette or crochet is easier to read at the same time.
Current book is Surrender by Bono of U2. Big fan and it's taking time because i wonder what I was doing as he describes his life story. I too found the Shardlake series (Disney+). The 4th Shardlake is on standby.
Contemplating reading Dune after watching the movie, as well as trying to find Planet of the Apes. Finished the 70's films now into the modern, 2000 versions. Not usually into sci fi but I guess I'm branching out.
Thanks from Canada 🇨🇦
I read every night before sleep. My current book is "The Heron's Cry" by Ann Cleeves, set in North Devon Uk and it's a murder mystery, my favourite genre. My latest knitting project is my very first toe-up socks!
Knitting: applied I cord on a crocheted hair bandana. Reading: working through the Black Eyed Susan middle grades list (Dogtown by Katherine Applegate is the current eye read, The Curious Vanishing of Beatrice Willoughby by G. Z. Schmidt is the current audio) and my nonfiction is First-Time Manager by Loren Belker and Gary Topchik. Sewing a Lyric shirt dress in a madras cotton (?) that I found in a Jo Ann Fabrics clearance.
And oh my lanta Rebecca! It’s been more than 20 years since the last time I read it and it needs to go back on my TBR. It’s one of my all time favorites. When I finish reading for work (children’s librarian, thus the Black Eyed Susan books) I want to dig into something dark and gothic.
I am still on the KTKAL, and I *need* to focus, bc. my sons birthday/high school graduation is in a month and it needs to be done (I originally thought I'd be done by May 1st...), but summer is pretty much here now and I feel like making smaller things and I am completely in to tiny (not micro - yet) crochet, and making granny squares in mercirised cotton in these amazing bright colors.. It needs to stop and I need to get on with the sweater - but once it is done, I will do small things until september or until I am in Denmark and temperaturs are lower - because Spainis summer is just too hot to sit with a whole sweater in your lap. Reading: I am trying to learn to read while knitting, and currently reading Liza Marklund, swedish crime novelist: The title translates to Countdown, I don't know if I like it yet - but usually I like her stuff. Daphne du Maurier - I *loved* her when I had my Hitchcoc craze in my teens. (btw. something has gone wrong with my paypal, so my subscription to patreon isn't working - I didn't leave).
This may already be in the comments but Daphne du Marier wrote chapter 1 of Rebecca as the last chapter of the book. The publisher/editors had her put it as the first chapter. When I recommend the book, I always suggest starting with Chapter 2. Reading and knitting! What could be better?
Ok I will say if you and your husband do a booktube podcast I am there!!!
I am reading Ordinary Monsters now and have Rebecca on my hold list. Sometimes I hate the libraries hold list but it means they are popular reads.
Rebecca is also a musical. I cant vouch for its quality as I have never seen it but there is more Rebeca media out there to be discovered!
I’m making my 8th emotional support chicken. I finish one just for someone else to request one. I’m over the chicken. 😂
Ug I am not reading or knitting for the moment we are in full swing of a full house renovation. It started 10 years ago and we are finally to the fun finishing things, installing bathrooms, woodwork, shelving doors etc. So for now it's podcasts and paintbrushes.
You know what, that's a big undertaking and sometimes you just need to spend the down time with the things that feel good. And if that's podcasts, that's perfect. Happy end-of-renovation! Such a good feeling, I imagine. ❤️
My husband and I are curious. What is that red thing on the desk next to your books?
Hi Lorraine! That’s a pencil sharpener! I use it specifically for my art pencils. 😊
My sister told me about the Veronica Speedwell books and I have been binging on listening to them while I do housework, gardening, quilting, and knitting (socks just now). My sister, my son, and I have a phone book club and we just read Close to Death by Anthony Horowitz. Not his best in my opinion.
Currently reading The Devil and Mrs. Davenport. Just finished How to Be Eaten, a modern, feminist retelling of some classic fairytales. Would recommend both if you're into that slightly off/slightly creepy but not too creepy sorta thing.
when it comes to booktube, krimsonrogue never fails to entertain me with his humorous scathing review of terrible books, it's a great channel to knit to!
Tell me you're a yarn dyer without telling me you're a yarn dyer: "light cerulean cobalt"
Hi Taylor. I’m a beginner knitter looking for a tee to knit for Summer. I’m interested in this one. When using the Joann’s cotton yarn, do you need to block the swatch when it’s cotton as opposed to wool?
Help!! I just started knitting this pattern the other day and am knitting the size small. I have reknit up to the first round of increases and have gotten a total of 117 stitches instead of 121 both times. Any insights you could give me would be greatly appreciated. I have messaged the author of the pattern but haven’t heard back.
Hi Tayler! I'm a big fan of sci-fi, so I'm not having a crush on your reading list 😅, but I love reading while knitting... have you consider reading Silo?
I thoroughly enjoyed the Silo series
I have been eyeballing this!!
Hi Lucy! I really want to break into sci-fi actually. I love the genre in general and really need to expand my preferences. I’ll look into Silo for sure. I’ve heard it’s good.
The silo series is great
I enjoyed all of the Shardlake books, but the very last one was a touch too plodding. Still highly recommend them all, shame he passed just recently. I'm si5ting here knitting a 2x2 ribbed beanie for my adult son. I've been getting into Joe Abercrombie books, in particular The First Law trilogy - I love a touch of dark humour with my fantasy/action/adventure. ❤
Sooo it's interesting that you mention this about the last Shardlake book. I'm on the second to last now and I find that though it's compelling, it definitely plods a bit more than the others. And the one before this (Heartstone) was more plodding than the previous. I feel like Sansom became very comfortable in this world and with these characters that he began to flesh everything out to the extreme (which I love fleshy characters and settings). And that, for me, can slow the pace...I wouldn't say it is a bad thing, but that it can cause me to become easily distracted away. So now I'm curious to see how the final book is in that regard because I can totally see that being the case.
Now, as for this Abercrombie you speak of...I just searched him on Goodreads and holy moly this law series sounds fantastic. Totally my kind of fantasy! I'm so glad you recommended it! Thank you Heather. ❤️
Yes, I think Sansom got completely into his world, and because it is real it made it all the more interesting to him, but a little less to the readers. I am loving the Abercrombie books, but that are dark, a little wicked, but very compelling. ❤
If you haven't read The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert, then you must. It's about a woman who is an amateur/citizen scientist who studies mosses, and during the era in which Darwin was developing the theory of evolution, she develops her own very similar theory. She's a strong woman character, living in a time when women were not valued for their minds, but her father supports her intellectual pursuits. It's just a captivating story...
