Today I'm sharing the progress on my main squeeze knitting project, a whimsical bookshop in my town, a review of The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo, and my secret to knitting and reading at the same time. Let's get cozy! ❤
PS: For those of you wondering, no. I'm not turning this into a "book tube" channel...I'm just enjoying reading and sharing it with y'all.
I must confess, when you first began talking about reading again, I rolled my eyes. 🙄and I wasn’t pleased with myself for this response. So I took some time to think this over. An avid reader my whole life ( the fam jokes no one remembers a time I didn’t read) complications from chemo (7 years ago) have kept me from reading anything but short articles and snipits of text. The focus is just too taxing. So it wasn’t you, it was me. Definitely me. I really appreciate you taking the time and making the effort to talk about your reading efforts, how you’re focusing on all the aspects of reading, ie GoodNotes. It’s a wonderful topic to bring into a public conversation. And koodos to you for doing this. I’ve reacquainted myself with my Kindle and brought in magazine and short stories to see how I do. I’m reading every day now since you’ve started your series. Kindle excitedly to updates me on my “reading” streak and I like it. I like it a lot. So convert my 🙄 eye roll into 🥹glistening eyes. Thank you. 😊
Total thumbs up for the sweet kindergarten teacher!!❤
Yep! No! Two! One thumbs up for being a kindergarten teacher and one for making the bag!
This is great. I prefer audiobooks while I knit. I knit a lot of lacework and sometimes I can't even watch TV while I knit or I make mistakes. Audiobooks are a perfect solution.
I'm loving the book ideas mixed in with the podcast. It's combining my two favourite things - books and yarn!
Loving the books and reading content! Nothing better than yarn and books ❤
I am thrilled you’re combining my two favorite things, reading and knitting! Love your practical findings on gadgets to help reading while knitting. So helpful! Also, went to get What Moves the Dead and found it’s currently free with kindle unlimited for those who use that. Excited to start it!
Thanks for the fantastic content!
❤Love that your video includes the town bag❣️ Your son’s teacher is so talented. What a nice gift.
The Grainline Town bag pattern is so easy to follow.
I have been making the project bags recently they are so special. Enjoyably , I was blessed to find an original Fringe Supply bag in a thrift shop in my local Kalamazoo, Michigan. SO GIDDY THAT THAT BAG FOUND ME ❤😊
I am a teacher,( high school history), knitter and also sew my own clothes. Hooray for renaissance women!
I’m going to school to be an art teacher, sew my own clothes and knit and spin. I love it!
That is amazing!!
My hat is off to you. ❤️❤️
Okay, knitting, Poe, and King? Such a good combination! Loved this podcast ❤
Right!? Thank you!
To improve the pick up at the back neckline, you can use a provisional cast on.xx
That's a cool book store! Vegas has the coolest places.
I have the same book support! My husband gave it to me last Christmas. :) Very useful indeed.
Music for the bookstore portion was appropriate. Do you think they need a jazz piano there?
I haven't reach the level where I can knit without looking but it's amazing that you can combine it with reading 😊
My favorite T Kingfisher book is nettle and bone with Thornhedge coming in a close second
Hi Tayler, I am not sure if I've commented this in your last video, but wondered if you knew about the Libby app and how that connects to your local library catalogue, so you get ebooks and audiobooks on your phone/tablet/computer. I also read a LOT, so I'm glad these two hobbies of mine are colliding in your channel ahah I will say you have a variety of booktube channels available, not all on YA, promise! Some of the ones I follow are Mike's Book Reviews, Better Than Food. Elliot Brooks and Anna Wallace Johnson.
Wow, I have Libby but didn’t realize I could get audiobooks. Thanks for the tip
@@cindymswyo yeah, I live on Libby ahah it will of course depend on your library's catalogue.
This was a great podcast. I love knitting and books!! I have been on Goodreads for years!! Would have to say, Ravelry and Goodreads, and. UA-cam are my favorites. I love knitting and listening to UA-cam Podcasts. Your sweater is coming along nicely. Hope everyone is feeling much better
So glad you decided to talk more about books! ❤ Yes, definitely a good thing that you've now combined books and knitting.
I LOVE T Kingfisher! She is my favorite author at the moment. I'm currently reading her Clockwork Boys series. Deep but understandable characters, unique world-building, clear prose... I've loved every book she's written!
Oh yay! I’m really looking forward to reading more by her. Thank you Janet!
T. Kingfisher is the pen name of the artist/illustrator Ursula Vernon. She wrote and illustrated the graphic novel series "Digger."
I love T. Kingfisher and what moves the dead was great!
I love T. Kingfisher!!! I have read four or five of her books in this year alone. Also highly recommend her fantasy novels, especially Paladin’s which includes some knitting.
LOVE the Veronica Speedwell series -- she and Stoker are delightful, and the historical details mixed with the wit and gumption of our heroine are just so fun. Excited for you!
re: ridge on neckline. I have knit a sweater with a judy's magic cast on, these stitches are then used for the neck instead of picking up stitches. Just a suggestion 😬✌
I was going to suggest this and was checking comments to see if someone else had put it out there!! 💚
The Writer's Block needs a bunch of Emotional Support Chickens.
Indeed it does!
Can chicken live alone?
You should totally add Mexican Gothic to your TBR. It's amazingly gothic... thus the title, I suppose!
Some of my favorite books are by T. Kingfisher. That one was one of my least favorites, though. The Twisted Ones and The Hollow Places are the best.
I loved the Hollow Places so much!
I love hearing honest book reviews, I’m in a reading slump at the moment but you’re inspiring me to pick a book up again ❤
Oh I’m so glad! It feels so good to have my nose back in books again. ❤️
Thank you! Thank you! Loved the book seat.
First of all, I hope your boys are feeling better and that you and your hubby didn’t catch the bug! Thanks for sharing your KTKAL, I am still adding to the yoke at this moment. I am having fun with deciding how I want the sweater to develop. I wish I could read and knit, I just have to see what my hands are doing!! Thanks again for an uplifting chat!
I found an article about how to get rid of that ridge when picking up stitches. I’ll post it in the KTKAL today. You need to pick up your stitches from the other side of the neckline while still having the garment right side facing. Who knew!?!? So much great knowledge being learned.
Great video
I love reading and knitting - been working on a basic sweater and reading the latest Veronica Speedwell. Such a fan of the whole series!
My favourite things to knit while reading are socks or I guess really any small simple project. I usually prop the book up on my lap while sitting in bed or in a chair with a foot stool.
Another tool for holding a book open is a book weight. It looks like a dumbbell with a flat side. I have knit and read for years. You are correct that it needs to be “mindless” knitting. I would knit while waiting for my husband at his VA doctors appointments. All of the veterans think I’m a genius!😂😂
Also I get a brain jolt when you mention Gladys. That was my mom’s name.
Thank you for your enthusiasm for knitting and reading and inadvertently reminding me of my mom.
That bookseat looks amazing!
Yay! I'm caught up now! My book interest list is growing as you present more books. I realized that I don't think I've read Edgar Allen Poe, so I'm gonna add him to my "Gotta read" list. Thanks for sharing!
Try knitting while listening to audio books. They are great.
Ohhh thank you for sharing that whimsical book shop! I can't wait to go check it out! And this is the first time I've heard of BookTube! I may take a wander through some of those videos! 📚👍
Hi Tayler. What a neat book store! ❤ I wish I could read and knit at the same time lol.
I read A Curious Beginning a few years ago and enjoyed it! It’s funny hearing it pop up here. Enjoy your content - reading and knitting plus tea? Haha! I’m here for it.
Reading and knitting and a sweet local book store ❤❤❤ you are talking to me 🥰 I have a little book store here in Summerville Sc my dogs even know the walking path to get there lol
Newish viewer from UK here. Loving your podcast. That beanbag bookseat is genius!
You probably have, because it's an oldie, but have you read Sleep Pale Sister by Joanne Harris? I think it was her first novel. Before she got into Chocolat style magic realism. Is gothic. I love. Would very much enjoy your opinion. Even if you don't like it at all. 😂
Very fun podcast episode! Hope the tummy bug is well and truly GONE by now.
💕
I’m a book and fiber nerd..retired from public, bookmobile, and secondary library..eeek..in Oregon. Bookstores yes ma’am! I live in colorado now.
I’m currently rereading Jack Finney and all things time travel. I love twilight zone and gothic (have a wooden Poe bookmark) and Stephen king…also Japanese authors like murikami and old school manga. Classics: dickens, collins, Austen, Twain…
I think you’re the best my dear. I feel right at home sitting at your lunch table.
I’m working on a Lullaby lap blanket in Noro and a Cobblestone cowl in linen and Cotton Gima. Also a couple little sweaters for my granddaughters.
So glad I found you!!
Stay bubbly!!🎉
The book seat may just bump something off my wish list. That toggle!
Glad to hear the boys are on the mend and crossing fingers you + your hubby don't get it.
Currently working on a sweater that's stockinette stitch. Occasionally I try to not look. Crochet without looking is easier for me - crocheted a mosaic bedspread while watching hockey games on tv.
Really enjoy the book suggestions as I've recently rediscovered my library. BTW must thank you again for recommending CJ Sansom's Shardlake series. I've read the first three and they keep getting better each time. The books are also making their way through my extended family. Can't wait to start the 4th.
Based on your suggestion, I got the audiobook version of What Angels Fear. Finished in just a couple of days. Excellent read.
I am looking forward to reading A Curious Beginning. Thank you.😊
I have definitely been bookin' it lately (Jules Verne...need I explain? Lol) also working on a pair of granny square pants and a vintage doily for my room, so that Book Seat would be fantastic for my evening craft time, or even while traveling and I don't want to endlessly scroll in the car. I love that book store too, Anne Shirley would say "there is definite scope for the imagination here!" Love your videos Taylor!!
I absolutely loooove the Gentlemen Bastards series by Scott Lynch! From what you've described about what you enjoy I think you'd be into them too. The first one is sort of like Oliver Twist but with subtle magic
Oh I looove that series! I just got the second one. And T Kingfisher is wonderful. I haven’t read that book, but I read A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking. I believe it’s a YA but so enjoyable. I laughed out loud.
Also, I truly enjoy your channel. As a crocheter and a novice knitter, I have learned quite a bit from your channel.
With regards to A Curious Beginning: You dare us to read the first chapter and not read the 2nd … I dare you to read the first book and not read The. Entire. Series. Holy Hannah they are brilliant! I have been addicted to these books for the past several months. I “read” while I’m walking the dogs and the audio version is just as good. Love, love, love - can’t recommend highly enough if you enjoy a strong willed, no nonsense female character (Stoker isn’t bad either 😉).
Just here to agree! I’m obsessed with the series 🥰 I’ve listened to the audio for all of them, and it’s wonderfully narrated.
T Kingfisher is one of my VERY favorite Authors!!!!!!! 100% can not recommend her book A Wizards Guide to Defensive Baking enough!!!!!!
Hey Taylor, I am reading „Ordinary Monsters“, and I love it🩶 Thanks for your recommendation✌🏽
Love your book reviews your descriptive takes me back to Ken Follet trilogy’s which I loved. My trouble these days my arthritic hands make it difficult to turn pages but I do not enjoy reading on a kindle and an audio book I struggle with the narrator.
I practiced knitting without looking at my hands while watching this video! I need to tackle that before reading while knitting!
Ooo good! You can totally do it and the practice will help immensely. Before you know it, you'll be knitting and watching something and not even paying attention to what you're doing. 😘
How fun!! We had a similar place called Seaport Village’s Upstart Crow Bookstore & Coffee House…sadly I’m not sure if it’s still there
Gosh, that sounds lovely. I feel like bookstores are becoming my new yarn stores. lol!
Excellent choices for your books! I love the Veronica speedwell books, they are very fun. And T Kingfisher is one of my faves. I devoured her books last year, you should look into her Paladin series
A new book my brother found for me is the Mimicking of Known Successes. Mystery with some romance. Set in the future but has definite gothic Victorian vibes. It’s a quick read and I’m on the waitlist for the next one from this author.
t kingfisher is a favorite! have fun!
I read Billy Summers, too. Very different from most of King’s works. I also enjoyed it, but I generally enjoy his writing. I think you are going to enjoy the Veronica Speedwell mystery series. I read a few, but took a break. They started to feel a bit formulaic. I enjoyed them so I’m hoping taking a break and going back will bring back the original enjoyment.
This bookstore reminds me of one in Tokyo. You really do need to take your family to Japan!
I find that the secret to reading and knitting is either to read from a kindle or to have a plate heavy enough to keep the pages in place ( and hope it doesn’t get tidied up for you )
I’m loving the book reviews interlaced with knitting content, esp since I love your taste in books. I too read books while knitting all the time, so I love that you’re spreading the joy of doing this! In the gothic fantasy realm, check out Johannes Cabal the necromancer, I think you’d enjoy it (the audiobook is well narrated if you’d rather listen to it too).
Your sweater is coming along beautifully! Love the color too.
Here in Nashville we have the wonderful Parnassus Books, owned by a favorite author (and good human being), Ann Patchett.
Not a gothic book, but I can recommend “Demon Copperhead” by Barbara Kingsolver - it’s a wink and nod to Dickens David Copperfield.
Stay well!!
I have learned that if I am reading a large print book , I can do the read and knit thing with ease.
That’s how I make my improvised tees (building the décolletage along with the raglan increases). Can I please move into that book store?!?
Audiobook + knitting ♥
My book world does clide with my knit world. What a good idea with the clip. I waste to much knit time looking for a show!
I just finished the adventures of Amina al shirafi and it was so good!
Hi Taylor, I’m definitely going to try reading and knitting. Just wondering what pattern was used for your wonderful knitting bag as I’d love to make it x
Wondering if you could use a provisional cast on to give a smoother look to the neckline but I’m not actually sure how that would work when you cast on the extra stitches for the front neck used in this type of construction 😅 I suppose you would pick up on just that spot and knit into the stitches on the provisional cast on for the rest but perhaps it would be obviously different? 🤷🏻♀️ I knit the Larkin Knit by Park Williams that uses staggered start for my son in a blown yarn with lots of floof and find the neck looks fine, if very squishy.
I love Poe! Have you watched the Netflix series of the House of the Usher? It also has a lot of Poe reference other than the work itself.
Tayler, are you a writer? You review books like a writer, and you have a good eye for reviewing.
Hey Tayler! I’ve read the whole Speedwell series to date. Some are kinda spicy. I’ve enjoyed them despite their flaws and how they’ve evolved over time. I’m a sucker for historical fiction, mystery, and sassy strong female leads. Curious what you think. I read mostly on the kindle (through Libby) and can multitask as well. Gladys is looking fresh! ❤❤❤
Hi Star! I love a spicy tale from time to time and I feel like this series will pair well with the CS Harris series with a similar male protagonist. I’ll keep you posted for sure! ❤️
Once again, I haven't finished watching yet, but I must comment so I don't forget. The Veronica Speedwell series by Deanna Raybourn is SO good. So. SO. Good. it gets better with every single book. And if you love it, do I have some recommendations for you!
I actually came across the series when I had a book reviewing blog, and I was fortunate enough to get an advanced copy. I've been in love with Deanna Raybourn ever since. Cannot wait to hear what you think!
Oh my gosh I’m SO excited now. Thank you for sharing. I love knowing that I have another series to fall in love with!
Her other book, while very different, is also very excellent - Killers of a Certain Age
Here in Australia we call the clip - a bulldog clip 😝 don’t ask me why it’s just all we’ve known it as 😊
Hello, you must to do a provisional cast on in the back of the sweater, for the neckline stay flawless 😊 kisses
The raglan sweater looks nice. The thing I don’t understand but would like to on top down sweaters such as raglan and circular yokes is when to divide for the arms and whether or not to add additional stitches underneath the arm so that I have enough stitches for the arm and enough for the body. It may be more art than science. But it would be good to understand what the result would be if I split early and added a ton of stitches below or split late and had maybe no stitches below. I wish designers would give more explanation on why the construction is as it is. Maybe they learned of you do this and that you’ll have too much fabric under the arm so by doing this tweak you don’t. I’d love to hear more of that instead of measure you arm, bust, length and after that you should know what to do.
I would definitely recommend checking out the blog series I mentioned here (link in the description). It answers a lot of these questions. ❤️
I feel like the statistics and graphs of Storygraph would really scratch the right brain place for you over Goodreads. Have you seen it?
Ok, holy moly. I just started an account over there and it's awesome. Thank you for the suggestion!
but none expects The Spanish Inquisition ;)
😂😂😂 I performed this bit of Flying Circus in high school speech and debate. 🤓
Provisional cast on?
Perhaps. 🤔☺️
I love everything about this bookstore beside the bunny. :( The cage is way too small, has too less space to hide and they should not live alone. I hope it's just interim because it needs to get medical treatment every other hour and the owner takes it to the store for that reason.
Love the color of your raglan! You could try picking up stitches by inserting your needle between the knit stitches rather than in the center/top of each stitch. Not sure if this totally solves the issue at the edge but I have done this once before and it looked way better than other projects and the designer (kutovakika) does this a lot for her sweaters where stitches are picked up!
i wonder if those things that bother you about the neckline will be improved post-blocking (sweater is looking so good!!). ETA: okay as i kept watching, i have to chime in on this sometimes controversial issue: shameless paperback spine cracker here 🙋♀😎
I read What Moves the Dead and it hasn't left my mind since. It is amazing and I wish I had a physical copy. It is a bit creepy
When you are starting, you leave a circular needle in while doing the 1st row. Saw it done several months ago, learning UA-cam somewhere.
I used to read and knit all the time! Don't know why I stopped, probably because it's so much easier to put on a show or video. But I got out my book stand and my kindle fits right on it!
Loved your book talk. I no longer read books, I read on my Kindle or listen to audio. Reading and knitting is easy with my Kindle. I loved your book stand. I think it could also be helpful if you are knitting out of a pattern book.
I bought a Bookseat based on your video, and you were right! It's fantastic 👏, I have arthritis in both hands, so holding a hard cover book isn't easy. I also love to knit and read, but the pillow stack wasn't working out as well as it did in the past. Soooo glad I found one! Thanks so much!
Love the shoutout to the teachers! She sounds amazing 😊 I also love your hair journey! I’ve been watching since your pixie cut and i know how big the struggle can be. Looked/looks amazing at every length.
Knitting and watching UA-cam when ‘lo and behold there’s a new video on your channel! Lucky me. 😁
Love this Tina. Hope you enjoyed it!
@@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS, enjoyed it very much!
Love that you discovered the book seat……my daughter and I have had them for years! They are so versatile….. they can hold e-readers/tablets etc too. Love knitting and reading combining.
I saw one at my local bookstore and considered picking one up because I love to knit and read but it’s difficult with a paper book!
If you like kind of creepy I highly recommend Seanan McGuire’s Home for Wayward Children series.
I ADORE that series!
You’re the best! My Book Seat just arrived! Perfect! From your description I wasn’t sure just how it would work, but just incredible in many ways, so THANKS❣️My taste in reading is very different but some of your offerings have peaked my interest. I’ll share one of my all time favorite audiobooks, “West With The Night” a true story, by Beryl Markham. She grew up in Kenya & was the first person to fly solo from England to America. The descriptions are incredible as was her life. Happy knitting, happy reading!
Love your channel, but one small niggle, what’s going on with leaving your teabag in the cup? How to make tea: pour boiling water over it, jiggle it for a bit until,it’s the desired strength and add a splash of milk, that’s it, simple, the perfect cuppa! I think I should start a channel, teaching Americans how to make tea 😂
Hello from the Greater Montreal area! Thank you for sharing the book seat, I will certainly look into that. You mentioned during your previous episode that you were interested in fiction, fantasy but also in historical novels. You might want to have a look The Chronicles of St. Marys. I have listened to all 32 books and short stories on Audible, and I love it! The historical facts have been well researched, and are varied from book to book. The characters are interesting; there is adventure, action, suspense, and a bit of romance. It is well written and Jodi Taylor has infused it with a sarcastic British sense of humour, admirably narrated by Zara Ramm. Well worth the price!
My boyfriend and I read together all the time the way you mentioned 😊 It's so nice to discover other couples do it too ❤ We read Jane Eyre and a few other books this way, and currently we're in a pause but should retake George Martin's A song of ice and fire soon
You might like Our Hideous Progeny by C. E. McGill. It's a Frankenstein-ish story. My husband loved it, his mom loved it and it has 4 stars on Goodreads. Thanks for the tip about the book seat!
Books sound fabulous! Will definitely need to check out the book seat! As for the sweater, you mentioned the collar seam when picking up stitches. I am wondering if a provisional cast on would help. Though not sure how it would work when increasing by casting on stitches but short rows might work for shoulder shaping if you provisionally cast on the number of stitches for the collar. Hmmm, I'd have to play with that but it's an idea. Have a wonderful day!
Such a fab mix of knitting and books! Thanks for all your recommendations. You got me thinking - have you read The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern - gothic Circus! I read it in one sitting - my all time fav!!!
