this performance blows me away because matt is right at a huge changing point for his voice, between black holes and the resistance. by 2009, he was bellowing and had lost a lot of his falsetto tendencies. which is the sign of a growing and bettering voice! but this period in muse's timeline is so unique for him. you can hear the best of both worlds - he's belting where he should, and nearly shrieking where it counts. i can't stop watching this version.
Yeah, I don't understand the people who claim his voice was better back in Showbiz/OoS days. It wasn't. Sure, maybe he could sustain his highest notes a bit longer, but overall, his chest voice was whiny and not very strong. His voice started deepening around this time and he became such a better technical singer, not relying on falsetto so much. Trying to sing whole songs in falsetto is obviously not a lasting formula for a singer to try to sustain over a career.
It’s honestly crazy to listen to listen to Matt’s voice change from 2006 to 2007 to 2008 if you listen to live performances. Listen to the earliest versions of Starlight in the original key vs when they dropped it a half step after a couple months, totally different, or Invincible going down a half step in 07. Listen to Space Dementia in 2008, it almost sounds like that deep bellowing voice in Reading 2011 but not quite, yet not that strained Origin tour voice. His voice was always consistent within tours except BH&R where it kept changing. So interesting to hear. Some songs like Citizen Erased and Sing for Absolution already started sounding like modern him but other stuff felt like earlier him.
Jesus Christ! 😱 I think I had 3 heart attacks, my cat got scared of me cuz I was banging the pillows, now one of my earbuds just blew out! That makes this the best live version of Dear Star I'd ever seen! ✨
I was here for this,, it was such an incredible performance! Trying to find as many videos from that night as i can, is there a better video quality version of this? Seems like UA-cam probably nerfed the quality back when this was originally uploaded.
