    Years ago I spotted Clipperton Island on a map and ended up reading everything was that was available on it at that time. Including the tragic Mexican army occupation. One of my regrets is I never got a chance to visit it in person. I don’t know what the spell is , I suppose it’s just spotting a remote French island off the coast of Mexico.

      I don't think Arnaud deserves to be a villain. The dude is more of a tragic character than anything else. A man dedicated to doing his duty so much, he inadvertently condemned a bunch of people to almost starve on a godforesaken rock in the middle of nowhere. Alvarez though, he shoul definitely be the villain. And I totally agree, Robert Eggers would make a great director for that movie.

    I have an unrelated question that I kinda know the answer to but I don't. Why does Europe look so weird? If you look on a map most continents look kinda similar. They start large before becoming thin and triangular. Kinda like an upsidedown water drop. But Europe doesn't. My friend and I joked that God first drew Europe super detailed and then copy-paste the rest. But why is it that Europe looks so weird? I know it's plates-tectonics and the European flat land but it still feels weird compared to the rest of the world

    • @john3_14-17
      @john3_14-17 2 роки тому +2

      If you see Asia and Europe as Eurasia, then the whole also tapers off - Europe being the skinny part.
      The only continents that don’t taper like that are Australia and Antarctica.
      North America tapers in both directions like a diamond.

    Kinda surprised that this island isn't Mexican territory still as it's quite close to the shoreline.

    • @cwovictor3281
      @cwovictor3281 2 роки тому +3

      Being close to the shoreline ain't necessarily reason enough to belong to another nation. Like, the Falklands for instance. It's a little goofy, having an island in the middle of nowehre is like if Mexico had the Isle of Mann.

    • @compatriot852
      @compatriot852 2 роки тому +4

      @@cwovictor3281 The island is much closer to the Mexican mainland than Tahiti (like thousands of kilometers less) and was actually settled for a while by Mexicans.
      Also this was during the height of colonialism/Imperialism. Weird France never decolonized an area they stole from Mexico like they did with other nations.
      Also there's the fact that they tried to do nuclear testing and other environmentally damaging actions up until the 80s that could had been disastrous for the Mexican locals on the coastline who depend on the waters for fishing and transportation

      @RexAresius 2 роки тому +2

      @@ABCD-sl2pn at that time ownership of land depended far more on "effective settlement and development" than "a guy flying our colors saw it 200 years ago". Mexico did more to keep and populate the island than France, simple as. The same logic applied to the claims of Portugal and Spain in Africa - it wasn't enough to have been the first to sail and explore the area, you needed to set up an actual colony to keep it!

    • @ABCD-sl2pn
      @ABCD-sl2pn 2 роки тому +2

      @@RexAresius Ownership is not reliant on "effective settlement and development", thats just what your personal opinion on what ownership is. The french dejure owned the territory, all the maps and cartographers at the time would agree with this, then the mexicans came in with gunboats, forcibly took the land and then settled it with mexicans. And besides, no one lived on the island when they got it back so all that settlement means nothing towards a claim. "Uh its ours because we had a dozen people on that island, who have long since abandoned it" is a ridiculous way to claim land.
