Tony lends people money and is unreasonable and destroys their lives . Then he’s upset when Hesh asks for the money on time. What a hypocrite . Hesh is one of the few guys in Tony’s crew that I felt bad for .
I never once felt bad for hesh … all that money he has . With Tony the more he makes the more he spends . And you know hesh told him about the boat . It has absolutely no resale value whatsoever. A million and 2 minus assets . Plus I mean hesh wrote 12 gold records at f note records remember , even uncle Junior tried to tax hesh in first season and hesh re negotiated . “ see you don’t mess with these Desert people “ lol 😂
Yeah, I didn't really get Tony's attitude here, he had always been straight with Hesh. You go back to season one when Junior started taxing Hesh and Tony bailed him out of the situation. This series of scene's didn't work for me... and whatever happened to Renata???
@@KebabMusicLtd it aligns perfectly with how Tony has always been. If you owe him or his friend money he makes sure he gets his way. If he owes you well u can expect to wait on that. And Renata died in her sleep, brain aneurysm
You know Tony has killed others for a lot less money than 200k. Tony didnt "ask" anything he knows he lets Hesh operate his business and told him to get me 200k. The fact Tony actually paid Hesh back any amount of money is astonishingly nice actually.
This was amazing writing. David Chase knew how beloved Tony was by the fans. So he often had to counter balance that by showing you what a piece of shit he really was.
He started to get bitter like that in later episodes, he stopped struggling with his morality and past and just accepted he was a piece of crap that only cared about himself and was a hippocrit
Paying him all the money back when he was at his lowest was the lowest. When Tony felt he was once again superior (he still had his wife) the money didn't matter to Tony. Fake friendships based on Murder and Violence. What a Masterpiece the Sopranos really is. RIP JG - and incredible actor.
I didn't see it that way at all, that's interesting. I sort of thought Tony seeing Hesh's grief made him realise how childish he was being and gave him a wake up call. I guess it is tactless for him to give him the money when the guy's sitting in his pants with tears stained on his cheeks.
I don’t see that at all i saw it as Tony being a man and like Max just commented, it took him seeing his friend going through hard times to realize how childish he was being. He was even acting extremely awkward as a normal person would be when in a similar situation. Tony was just being Tony as usual, which is why it makes his genuine interactions with only a select few seem questionable, but the truth is that those few that he even gives the time of day to other than his family or “assassin servants” are the ones he actually cares about throughout the show. Even the annoying neighbor he enjoys trolling. That’s his way of saying he likes you for a guy like him. Hesh more than likely knows this by now, but is too depressed to even think about Tony or his 200K! I would even argue that in Tony’s world that was his way of cheering his friend up by “suprising” him with the money he most likely wasn’t going to give him. At that point they both knew their friendship would never be the same.
@@portugal5698 interesting point. But for me the fact that Tony had the capability to kill Christopher wel hesh meant nothing to him. And cmon what a moment to decide to give him the money back? But look the reason this show is the best show ever written (in my opinion) is because there are millions of fan theories. I think it strikes a chord with all fans - old and new. Great writing and incredible casting.
This whole show is so brilliant. Across the entire series, it depicts the heartbreaking emptiness of a life based on deception and superficial consumerism. Hesh is so worried about having loaned the money to a sociopath that he connects the money to mortality itself (fearing that death might become the end result). Then the show hits you with the cruel ironic twist of death happening outside the circumstances of the loan with the way it hits an innocent victim. Then in the end he gets the full amount paid back in full, and the money (for the first time in the episode) is utterly superfluous and meaningless because he’s truly lost something actually meaningful in his wife. That lost shot is so haunting: he’s left with the now despicable sight of the bag of money and empty condolences of his phony friend.
Aaron Lauretani Tony wanted to deny him the satisfaction of getting his money back and found the perfect moment to do it - as revenge for feeling like hesh was being a stickler when they had so much history.
throughout the whole series Tony has absolute respect for Hesh. He never came close to a jewish slur/ impersonation.. even when breaking Balls.. The way he says YA GOTTA HAVE IT.. and after that hes throwing terms like Shylock around..its crazy to see him just turn his love and respect for a man off.. like a light switch. Tony Heartless for real.
@popasmuerf absolutely!!! Tony is really made at himself, but clearly taking it out on Hesh. He relives those bad bets over and over, ever time he makes a payment. Thus it becomes Hesh's fault
@@unclemayhem6696 And this is what they mean when they say 'He wasn't built for this life'. Because being built for being a gangster basically boils down to having no heart. And the more heart you have, the more you suffer.
"Pissy attitude?" You have to be reminded about a $200K debt, then Hesh endure insult after cheeky insult, then you show up to the man's house without the full payment, and Tony refuses his offer for a drink. And Hesh is the one with the "pissy attitude? "
Tony coming by to drop him the bag, now that she's gone. It's hard not to think that Tony acted like he was doing him a solid by giving him the full take right then and there.. instead, it's exactly what's owed. Nothing more. No boost, nothing. And this is literally one of his best, and only actual friends. It boils down to just being another show, of just how far Tony had fallen in the end.
@jonathanbirch2022ur thinking too deep. It was more so “Aw shit hesh’s wife just died and I owe him money I need to pay him back or else my whole crew will hate me and never trust me” either way Tony made the last weeks hesh had with his wife miserable and a waste by causing hesh to always be worried about his money and getting wacked instead of enjoying time with her

When he starts being a total dick to Carmella over the Jets that was one of his lowest lows in the series. Tony was just as much of a junkie as Chris, he just wasnt addicted to heroin.
Considering how Tony acted when someone owed him money vs him borrowing, really shows his character. The part where he asks him about the change is the cherry on top.
2:03 is just so brilliant. Tony’s reaction after Hesh subtly takes control of the situation by making a Jewish joke that gets more laughs than his “joke” did.
Around the 55 sec mark , what's up with Hesh's left ankle and foot ?? It may be nothing more than Shadows but I'm not sure what I'm looking at at all? Somebody go back and look at it and maybe I'm not seeing things after all? LOL
@@oleschoolotismiller1173 Vigorish... the weekly interest due on an informal loan, one that has no documentation, just the understanding of the two parties involved. Informal, yes, but in normal cases deadly for the borrower if not paid exactly on schedule as agreed to. Tony could have borrowed from another rich Italian mobster like Johnny Sack, but then his financial distress would have been known to New York... not something he'd want advertised. He could have borrowed from Sil, perhaps, but then he'd have to pay Sil back on time and Tony wouldn't have wanted to do that. So he leaned on Hesh, the vulnerable non-Italian. Hesh was lucky to escape this entanglement with Tony with his life and money intact and he knew it.
In fact that exact same crisis is the basis of The Merchant of Venice by Shakespeare, which is the play that introduced the money-lender Shylock. The Jews of Venice had long been the financial backbone of the spending of the nobility, but when one noble got in trouble he turned to the courts and prosecuted Shylock for usury, which is the lending of money for interest. Anyway Duke Orsino turned on Shylock the way Tony turned on Hesh. Don't go thinking the writers of this show are not well-versed in the greats.
@@ps-yk8su Throughout the show he's charismatic, has a sense of humour and human struggles that one can identify and sympathize with, which makes him likeable.

It was a bit passive aggressive, the second time Tony shows up at Hesh's house unannounced and forces another point and a half on him, with Bobby standing there, seems like he's actually fucking with him
Well, nice visual forshadowing of Tony and Carlo having a falling out. Like they actually had. "Maybe you should start sucking cuck instead of living in TV land, because Vito made three times what you are making on constructions!" Right in front of Bobby.
I have NEVER and I mean NEVER loaned a single penny to a friend or family member or child, it ends too poorly. Now, I have GIVEN plenty of money to family, friends and my kids, but I NEVER expect it back.
He was arguably a different Tony Soprano at this point. Time & circumstance kinda thing. Tony in the earlier seasons was different there's been alot of character development and events that have took place. "Not for nothing" ImaPaperbackWriter just saying.
I absolutely hated the way Tony was so flippant with his debt to Hesh. Money loaned between friends never ends well. I wish Hesh had a more prevalent role.
The Hesh Tony story arc highlights perfectly the tight rope these guys walk everyday, something as simple and innocuous as reminding Tony about a loan destroys their entire relationship, that single lapse of judgment on Hesh's part destroyed an entire lifetime of friendship, it also really goes to show no matter how friendly and loyal Tony seemed to Hesh it was never a true friendship, they were associates, I think Hesh forgot this and ended up making a big mistake that in the end could of cost him his life.
But what's he supposed to do just write off 200k? Hesh thought they had a strong relationship which in the end proved to be right as he did get his money back. I think the fact that Hesh gave him 200k shows the bond, even if you are a multi millionaire 200k is still a huge amount of money. Tony was the one acting like a dickhead, I don't think Hesh expected him to be so reluctant to pay but he had two choices, either address the debt or be a bitch and say nothing.
Hesh did everything right, because rest assured if he *had* said nothing Tony would've used that as a free pass not to pay him back. Someone in Hesh's position can't account for how unhinged and unreliable Tony has become, the best option would've been either A: Saying he didn't have extra capital to move around to give Tony the loan in the first place.. or B: Talked Tony down to a much smaller loan that he would've had no excuse to pay back on time, or worst case scenario he didn't, and Hesh wouldn't be out much cash from the loan.
@@winstoncannady4224 Her death is a bit of a red herring, I think everyone's initial assumption is "TONY DID IT" but honestly I don't think he did. For one Tony's crew isn't exactly known for their finesse or subtlety when it comes to taking someone out, Tony discreetly slipping Hesh's wife poison seems far less likely than having one of his goons handle it like he always does. That and we can only assume that her death caused Tony to temporarily have some sympathy for the man and pay him back, whether or not the full remainder of that balance was actually in the bag is up for debate. lol
Ironic considering that Tony advises Artie about getting money back from the Armagnac French dude " They miss a payment , they start acting like they're doing you a favour if they give you anything " and him making Hesh feel bad for wanting the 200k back.
If this was a conversation on the show, they should add a character played by Johnny Roastbeef. All he would do is eat in every scene. Tony Soprano: You mean hypocrisy, right? Johnny Roastbeef: *burp* Tony Soprano: Are you gonna so this every time? Johnny Roastbeef: What, I’m eatin’ ovah here, ‘fuck you want from me?
One thing this show has taught me is how people just come and go, no matter how close you are. One way or another, it will end. Look at all the friends and family Tony lost. I feel as though that caused his depression to worsen in later seasons.
In the end you're left to die alone in your own arms. And don't expect happiness cause you won't get it. It's all a big nothing. What makes you so special?
Hmm... a little pessimistic. Happiness, (at least more happiness in your life then sadness. No ones happy all the time) even fulfillment is very possible in life. What you can’t expect is answers or for your existential dread to be eased or to not die or for things to make sense, etc. Shit like that. Unless you are capable of bullshitting yourself and sedating your existential dread with fake religious bullshit. And in this day and age it’s fewer and fewer people who are capable of that level of self deception. I’m conclusion, yes you will die alone but you can be happy before you do...
Absolutely. TV shows teach you the most important lessons in life. For instance, if you get cancer you should not start a meth lab, even if you are a chemist. And, more pertinently, if you are in a criminal organisation, and your boss asks to borrow 200 thousand dollars, you should not do it, if your boss is something of a friend to you.
His friendship with Hesh didn’t end over the money. It ended because Tony just walked away with no comfort or compassion for a man who was heartbroken and just needed someone to at least sit with him... and because at that point Hesh feared and distrusted him so much...
No. It ended because Tony saw Hesh sort of like a father figure. He came and asked him for advice and used him as a therapist. But then he realized Hesh did not give a crap about him or his problems. And wanted his money back. That changes Tony's whole perspective on Hesh. And it hurt him too.

The scene where Hesh shows up at Satriale’s and Tony starts giving him shit about the loan without Hesh even mentioning it was absolutely ridiculous. Tony was a complete POS by this point.
I read that entirely differently. Repaying Hesh was the only gesture Tony thought of, I thought it was a good thing , rather than an insut ...and a part of his making condolences.

this mini saga of the 200k is very fascinating and relatable. i can't tell you how many times i have loaned close friends, or family money and then watched things go from normal to weird to resentful, even in cases where the other person never ducked me, or acted in bad faith. it just seemed like we both started to feel like money was more important to the other person, or that they were ungrateful, and maybe there's some layer of truth to that. the longer the situation is dragged out with time and payment installments, the longer the resentment and resulting tension continues to simmer. the death of hesh's wife put all those hard feelings on ice and immediately re-oriented both tony and hesh's perspectives as friends, and of themselves. it's very intriguing how the death of a loved one, and the empathy felt towards a grieving friend, can result in an abrupt truce, and dismissal of grievances.
Human nature. You bite the hand that feeds you. If you lend a friend or family member money, do so with the expectation that you will never get it back
That's why, in the extremely unlikely event, you win big in the lottery...you keep your mouth shut and let people know nothing. When you have money, people have a weird sense of entitlement to it and it's not just friends or family either...charities, organizations etc. Weird.
his speech and accent definitely evolved over the course of the series. Very early on as skinny Tony he had a slight lisp and sounded less like a Guido.

Tony ignored advice from both his dad and Hesh. From Johnny Soprano, “Never gamble, Anthony” after Tony witnessed Johnny and Junior take a clever to Mr. Satrialle’s hand for an outstanding gambling debt. From Hesh, “Don’t get involved and do business with Jews”, when Tony was approached to help his Jewish neighbor with his “son in law problem” and the motel.

This made me not want to lend people money again and to avoid those who ask me. Got fed up with people acting like they were doing me a favour by paying me back MY MONEY.
This was the situation always stuck out to me as why Tony was an awful person. This and when he intentionally set Janice off at Sunday dinner by talking about Harpo. The killing and crime was just what I expected but it’s amazing how insecurity and pettiness ruled his actions. Amazing how different I viewed Tony my second time through.
He knew Tony would be unwilling to lose face by not paying. He was bringing it up to remind Tony of the position he was in and keep him from going down a road without thinking about it. By saying, "Hey, you don't have to pay the guy," he was covering his ass by pretending to side with Tony while making sure the Hess thing didn't get out of hand. Classic middle child maneuver.
@@KindredPlagiarist I don’t think Bobby was thinking about it that deeply re: Tony needing to pay for appearances I think he was trying to curry favor but mainly was serious that one of the benefits of being a dangerous mob boss is getting to do what you please with other ppl, such as telling hesh to forget the loan and go f himself. Tony is from Lannister cloth and believes in always paying his debts.
This is a very rich vignette. Hesh (like many successful businessmenr) is consistent, truthful and honest. Tony is emotional, mercurial and ridden with a toxic mix of guilt and megalomania.
Sun Tazoo, the chinese prince Mackyabelly, said "when the truth is on your side, push truth. When the truth is against you, ignore it." It's easy for Hesh to be honest when Tony honestly owes him money

We never see Hesh again. Something tells me a little later on after Tony was whacked that Hesh was contacted by Carmine Jr instructing him now to kick-up straight to him.
A great episode, but it should be watched in it's entirety for its message(s) to really sink in. The last scene with Tony bringing the money is really powerful
Whenever people go on and on about, Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, The Wire, etc. Even 20+ years later, it's STILL, "The Sopranos" for me. The levels of hypocrisy, betrayal, and deceit of all of the characters...…….....combined with the subtlety and nuance of so many of the scenes. I always say that this series was Shakespearean. A huge part of Tony's business as 'boss of the family' is extorting people AND collecting (one way or the other) exorbitant interest on loans, yet he's all pissy about repaying a loan...…………….for gambling of all things. Great stuff.
@Degree7 It's both and more. The greatest thing about that show is that it was not written by your average tv writers. It was written by actual writers, playwrights, journalists, and people who actually lived the baltimore life. Thus it has a very literary feel to it. And that's what makes it the best tv show ever made. Not only is it entertaining, but it's layered as fuck.
I don't think people will be telling others how great GoT was. I saw the writing on the wall in Season 4. Skipping pivotal plot points because you don't think they're important is totally something D&D would do, and they did do. Let's forget about Tyrion's whore and Tywin's deception! That's the whole fucking reason Tyrion decided to actually kill Tywin is when Tywin told him the truth about the whore he married. GoT will go down as one of the biggest failures in show history. Hesh is right, Tony's out of order for speaking to him like that, like he isn't supposed to bring up the fact you owe him almost a quarter ticket. You don't give a man a nudge you'll never see a dime of that money again
The most precarious moment of Hesh's life was sitting there grieving while Tony set the bag of money on the table. It would have been just like Tony to have Hesh look at the money and at that moment deliver to Hesh a 3:00. That he did not shows the change in Tony's attitude once his gambling luck changed back from how bad it had become.
I'm not sure if there was interest on it. even though tony was a degenerate, he would eventually pay it back (the longer the better in this case). And with interest on 200k, that's a hefty amount. So that's actually a very smart move from Hesh. But I'm assuming there was even any interest to began with.
200k loan, and Hesh said done without hesitation. I remember one of my friends asked me for 20 bucks 15 years ago, until this day, I haven’t gotten back to him with an answer yet!

When Tony brings back the rest of the money after Hesh looses Renata. That was a breaking point for me. Tony was not only saying, f you, he was also saying, your luck went out and mine came in. Infuriating.
Although I agree with your main point - what a scumbag Tony was for suddenly turning up with the full 200k after Renata's death, not sure I agree with your analysis of it. Tony had the means to pay the money back in full all along, but he dragged it out, paid just the vig, and broke Hesh's balls continually about it, in front of everybody. "I could have paid you back in full at any point, but I chose to drag it out and insult you...but your grief is worth the 200k".
Bazil83, that’s why I strongly feel Tony timed the payment as he did. He could have paid Hesh at any time. He chose that time. He chose to kick him while he was down. It was a huge power play. Hesh knows it. He’s just too beaten down at that point to respond to it. Tony is a predator, and he always has to be showing his muscles. That’s what he did there. In my opinion. :)

This was Tony at his lowest...despite this bullshit towards the end with Hesh, he knew well how much he owed him, not just financially but as a trusted adviser
Hesh is practically the smartest person on the show, he RIGHTLY feared that Tony would whack him rather than pay, the fact that Tony didn't is irrelevant, he's had people whacked for less, and unlike everyone else who actually did get whacked, he feared the correct person who very likely would do it to him properly.

Perfectly stated.
It doesn’t matter what’s going on in life you still pay when your supposed too .

Informal, yes, but in normal cases deadly for the borrower if not paid exactly on schedule as agreed to. He could have borrowed from Sil, perhaps, but then he'd have to pay Sil back on time and Tony wouldn't have wanted to do that. So he leaned on Hesh, the vulnerable non-Italian. @@farmalmta I'd love to see Tony try to mess with Johnny Sack about paying interest on time.
In fact that exact same crisis is the basis of The Merchant of Venice by Shakespeare, which is the play that introduced the money-lender Shylock. Hesh was the man
The Hesh Tony story arc highlights perfectly the tight rope these guys walk everyday, something as simple and innocuous as reminding Tony about a loan destroys their entire relationship, that single lapse of judgment on Hesh's part destroyed an entire lifetime of friendship, it also really goes to show no matter how friendly and loyal Tony seemed to Hesh it was never a true friendship, they were associates, I think Hesh forgot this and ended up making a big mistake that in the end could of cost him his life.

Absolutely. TV shows teach you the most important lessons in life. For instance, if you get cancer you should not start a meth lab, even if you are a chemist. His friendship with Hesh didn’t end over the money. It ended because Tony just walked away with no comfort or compassion for a man who was heartbroken and just needed someone to at least sit with him... and because at that point Hesh feared and distrusted him so much...

Bobby suggesting that tony not pay his debt to Hesh was one of the few times in the show that Bobby was unlikable. Very few times.
Lets have it right, bobby was petrified of tony, he would agree with him on nearly anything
@@michaelkilcourse517 Bobby was anything but petrified of Tony, did u not watch the scene where he beats the shit out of him?
He knew Tony would be unwilling to lose face by not paying. He was bringing it up to remind Tony of the position he was in and keep him from going down a road without thinking about it. By saying, "Hey, you don't have to pay the guy," he was covering his ass by pretending to side with Tony while making sure the Hess thing didn't get out of hand. Classic middle child maneuver.
@@KindredPlagiarist I don’t think Bobby was thinking about it that deeply re: Tony needing to pay for appearances
I think he was trying to curry favor but mainly was serious that one of the benefits of being a dangerous mob boss is getting to do what you please with other ppl, such as telling hesh to forget the loan and go f himself.
Tony is from Lannister cloth and believes in always paying his debts.
He was always unlikable. Can’t stand “nice guy” types.
This is a very rich vignette. Hesh (like many successful businessmenr) is consistent, truthful and honest. Tony is emotional, mercurial and ridden with a toxic mix of guilt and megalomania.
Honest? ask the four black kids that wrote the songs that made Hesh rich if he's honest lol
Hesh, honest, LOL. He was a loan shark and a scam artist.

Johnny Boy was right! “You should never gamble Anthony.” And “A man honors his debts.”
"You just keep your antidotes to local color, like Dynaflows or McGuire Sisters or shit like that."
It was only Johnny boy being hesh’s friend that saves his life in the end as afraid as he was of his mother he always knew his father was a real varsity athlete 😂 but it does show Tony’s downfall in s1 he’s disgusted that junior once to tax him for operating under the the mobs protection in the fact his father respected hesh but was more than willing at one point to take $200,000 of the man because he couldn’t win at a horse race maybe someone should have suggest he put heshe’s money on pie o my and I bet he would have had another panic attack, by this point in the show Tony was a complete failure and he knew it if junior hadn’t got dementia he would have been have actually been a better boss but at this point Chris should have whacked Tony and took over would have been a better storyline especially because Chris would have been better at fighting New York I quite liked Phil either way he was gone but chrissy would not have let a weasel like butchy outsmart him as much as I love this show more than anything else that’s what I wanted to see more than anything was Chris take control over everything

Out of every show you mentioned, I'd say The Wire is actually much more Shakespearean.
Writing wise. Popularity wise. Good God.

The most precarious moment of Hesh's life was sitting there grieving while Tony set the bag of money on the table. It would have been just like Tony to have Hesh look at the money and at that moment deliver to Hesh a 3:00.
that's not how I see it. He felt bad for Hesh, so he felt bad that he had not paid his debt. So he went over there and squared it up.
