Everyone hoped that Mudhoney would be the ones who made it to the top the most, but I think their surviving and integrity all these years was actually the real top that truly mattered when you think about it. The top in terms of cultural popularity and zeitgeist is fleeting, thanks to Mudhoney I reconsidered the idea of success altogether and what actually matters. I mean I think Kurt wanted the same kind of lowkey underground popularity and longevity perhaps, but obviously he was fighting some inner demons for a long time, which some of us guess have had roots in gender dysphoria and depression, he seemed to be at war with the whole world as a reflection of his inner war with himself that he tried to escape from with drugs while at the same time loving everyone dearly, it was this love that I believe kept him going through music.

I don't remember which video it was mentioned in, but it's probably included somewhere in this one; at one point Jack mentions something along the lines of "well what's left to be released, other than live recordings", which, is probably more true than anything but... I finally got (and I mean FINALLY, been wanting it since I first got into Nirvana either in 1999 or 2000) the Singles box, and upon listening to each disc and got to the track "Marigold" on the Heart-Shaped Box single, I decided to look up the song on wikipedia. From it's wikipedia page: "There were, however, versions of the song that Cobain did play on - these remain unreleased." So, yeah, stuff like that, and possibly the recordings Dave and Krist made in the 2 or 3 days in 1994 before Kurt showed up on the final day, when they recorded "You Know You're Right" at Robert Lang's studio. I don't know, those are the stuff I wish to someday hear, that's all. I know there's probably more home demo recordings Kurt had made, especially the 1982 Organized Confusion demo at his aunt Mari Earl's home, but I don't NEED to hear stuff like that. If stuff like that ever were to get a release, cool, but otherwise, I just wish to eventually hear the stuff the band did record in studios.

These interviews are fantastic but I'd love to see an interview where Jack is talking about his own history with Skin Yard and his history with playing guitar, recording, etc. Questions always seem to focus on other bands, understandably so but considering how sharp his memories are and his pure talent, would be super fascinating to hear how he learned guitar and how he refined his style, some insight into Skin Yard and their approach to songwriting, they really encompass the sound that Soundgarden would perfect, as well as elements of what TAD would do and other early Sub Pop bands. Jack certainly isn't underappreciated but very overlooked I feel. So much info in his head that needs to be transcribed for the sake of history!

I completely agree with you. Every interview with Jack is "So what was recording Bleach like?" and "What was Kurt like?". It's frustrating because Skin Yard were one of the original grunge bands. I'm hoping Daniel will eventually interview Jack about his story as a musician.

Dear Jack Endino, it is time to release your diaries as a book before that info is lost to time.

Jack worked on so many records and they keep asking him about Nirvana. I get it but it must suck he never gets asked about his other records. I would ask him about Skunkworks by Bruce Dickinson because thats an album people didnt like back then and metal wasnt cool at the time and Bruce wanted to do something a bit different. Its still way different from the grunge and punk stuff Jack normally worked on.

It also frustrates me that barely anyone asks Jack about Skin Yard. He was a damn good guitar player in his own right and Skin Yard helped establish the grunge sound. I would love it if someone interviewed him about the band's early days without interjecting discussions of Kurt or Nirvana.

In the 1995 Nirvana's double CD bootleg "I Hate Myself And I Want To Die" there are both songs: Sappy and Verse Chorus Verse.
The audio is terrible, beware if if you find it.

This guy obviously been in the business a long time and obviously has a lot of knowledge but I disagree with some of the things he says at the I was 15 1990 just came out of the 80s at the time the 90s never new what it was chains had man in the box huge song but thrash metal was at its peak slayer megadeth anthrax all put out the biggest albums of there careers a lot of people thought thrash metal was going mainstream it was huge my point is they were playing thrash bands on the radio so teen spirit wasn't to ruff are heavy for that time what nevermind did more then anything was give 90s mainstream rock a direction let's face it thrash metal was still to heavy to be a dominant force in mainstream but people were searching for an escape from the 80s nevermind gave the mainstream its escape

Mudhoney never did anything for me. Gruntruck was my favorite non-huge band from the Seattle explosion.

I was 13 in 1991. To us kids, at the time, nevermind hit and we all bought it. Then some of us music nerds bought everything that came out of Seattle. We then discovered bleach and declared it better than nevermind. Insesticide came out and no one really cared except for poser nirvana fanboys. Then in utero hit and we went nuts again. Loved it. Then he killed himself and we all latched onto Green Day.

This guy contradicts himself. He says he likes in utero more than nevermind. Then later says he’s more of a pop guy and likes good melodies and catchy hooks.
