Nirvana's Krist Novoselic on Punk, Politics, & Why He Dumped the Dems

  • Krist Novoselic is best known as the co-founder and bassist of Nirvana, one of the most influential music groups of the past quarter century. The release of the band's albums Bleach, Nevermind, and In Utero in the late 1980s and early '90s not only mainstreamed what became known as grunge but helped to forever end what was once known as the mainstream. After Nirvana, it seems there is only alternative music and alternative culture, a transformation that is both liberating and anxiety-producing.
    Born in 1965 in Compton, California, but raised in Aberdeen, Washington, Novoselic (pronounced know-voe-selitch) embodies the forces Nirvana helped to unleash. Since the 1994 suicide of band leader Kurt Cobain, Novoselic has continued to play with various groups, including a stint with the legendary post-punk band Flipper and sporadic collaborations with former Nirvana bandmate Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters. But the bass player is also pushing to create an alternative approach to electoral politics.
    In 2004, Novoselic published Of Grunge and Government: Let's Fix This Broken Democracy, and these days he's chairman of FairVote, a nonprofit that lobbies for electoral reform such as instant runoffs and proportional voting. After serving as chairman of his county Democratic committee for several years and supporting Barack Obama early on, he has broken with the Democratic Party, in part because "it's a top-down structure" impervious to change from the grassroots.
    Like Nirvana's music, Novoselic's politics cannot be easily categorized: He has donated money to Ron Paul's campaign and he speaks in favor of the liberal-loathed Citizens United Supreme Court decision, which ended limits on non-coordinated political spending by corporations in federal elections. He's active in his local chapter of the fraternal farmer's organization, the National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry, proving you can go from grunge to Grange.
    Novoselic recently sat down with Reason TV's Nick Gillespie to discuss FairVote (4:18), gerrymandering (8:34), how he self-describes politically (11:30), the Grange (12:23), decentralization in the punk rock world (14:43), his issues with Democrats (20:00), why Republicans should embrace anarchy (22:08), why he fled the anti-World Trade Organization demonstration in Seattle (27:51), living in Croatia in 1980 (30:33), the early days of Nirvana (34:32), playing Germany just days after the Berlin Wall fell (37:46), Kurt Cobain as an individual vs. as an icon (43:20), drug legalization (45:57), going to college online (47:50), why he owns guns (51:31), his musical guilty pleasure (55:34), and more.
    Interview by Gillespie; produced by Meredith Bragg. About one hour.

      its not a theory. he was murdered. krist knew all along but spent 20 years supporting the suicide mythology. he hasn't said one work about 'soaked in bleach'. not one word. he spent 20 years supporting the murderers because he was bought by courtney to expouse the suicide mythology. why else would he support the murderers? not other reason. he was bought. but the difference between courtney buying the SPD is that krist was his bandmate, classmate and the person responsible for enriching his life the most.

    • @nonebusiness4488
      @nonebusiness4488 7 років тому +2

      it is impossible he didn't know he was murdered. people who spent time with kurt towards the end of his life all thought he was murdered. they knew he was not suicidal and wanted a divorce. krist and dave KNEW that. they knew rome was not a suicide attempt, but krist is on youtube saying rome was a suicide attempt (after kurt was killed), just like courtney. he knew all along but vigorously supported the murderers. the question is not did he know kurt was murdered. the question is not was he bought by courtney, he was, clearly, why else would he spend 22 years lying, for money she gave him, the question is when did she buy him. then it becomes he is supporting the murderers because he was one of the co conspirators.

    Nirvana's first gig in Glasgow, Scotland just before Teen Spirit went global. They're playing the QM Union so we go out there, no money, no tickets but we bring a couple of leads and are completely out of our faces. People on the subway also going to the gig give us beers.
    We get there, bouncers instantly tell us to fuck-off. We hold up the leads and tell them we're in the road crew. Nope. More folk start shit and we slip in. Another bouncer comes after us, we walk away from him and bump right into Krist Novoselic. Bouncer starts on us, we tell him we're road crew and look at Krist. He nods, says to us "where you been? We've been waiting on those leads, motherfuckers!" The bouncer goes away, we shake the big man's hand and go into the gig.
    That's all I remember. Afterwards, us wandering the streets, shirts gone, black and blue trying to hitch a lift home while talking about what a great fucking night we had.
    RIP Kurt.

      KRIST being tall like Peter Steel was the coolest in the rock industry during the 90's period. Great spirit on this guy. Head butting your bass guitar while bare footed and having an intellectual understanding of politics builds the type of swagger that we won't forget. We Salute you my brother. Nirvana are greater than legends their godly like ELP but their ours because they're western. How the west is won? Release 4 recordings tops and then the frontman blew his fuckin brains out however these guys are deserving of the same respect we show Zeppelin. We'd be at a loss if Kurt was to drink himself to death. Kurt became a Christ figure. The story of Nirvana belong in the 3rd testament. ***** I thought he was pretty clear about his personal reasons for owning guns. He has a farm, chickens, goats. When a raccoon gets into the chicken yard, if he didn't have his shotgun there'd be no eggs and no chickens left. He needs a gun to ward off the coyotes after his goats. He lives in the countryside with no one nearby, but if he did get into trouble and needed to defend his family, he'd call the police. I don't hear any irony at all in explaining himself as a gun owning pacifist. He's being practical. Hope your head doesn't explode.

    I've been reading William S. Burroughs for over a year now, and in that time I've read Junky, Queer, Naked Lunch, The Soft Machine, The Ticket That Exploded, Nova Express (Nearly finished with it), The Wild Boys, and Ghost of Chance, so I'm well acquainted with his work and I do not get how anyone with any common sense could read into his novels as him expressing that Heroin is a cool drug to do. He flat out says in Naked Lunch that junk was the worst thing he ever did and yet there's this cult of people who claim to have gotten hooked after reading Naked Lunch or other Burroughs books. I seriously wonder if some people read Junky and then think that their life will be as adventurous (though I'd say more turbulent and rough) as Burroughs' was. Dude was in and out of jail, in and out of withdrawals, and couldn't be a good father or husband in any capacity, not to mention Burroughs was receiving an allowance from his affluent family in St. Louis of $200 a month (which in those days ran for a lot) so that's why he was able to engage in these sort of experiences and make it out alive which most people cannot say they've done. In what way is that appealing?

      @Doll Steak Nirvana's "message" was to "smoke weed, punch a cop and fuck everybody".

    Stellar punk! Inspiring introspection. Global awareness. Expanding education. I'm a musician (singer) and studied many of the social sciences as Krist is. I always wanted to do more and just thought I was too old. Krist is 9 or 10 years older than me and he's expanding his education, resurrecting the band. Farming. Politically involved. I love him. I love Dave. I miss Kurt. Long live Nirvana ❤🎶❤🧠❤🤘✌️

    this video suggestion just came up so four years later I watched it.
    This video makes me like Krist even more;
    It doesn't matter on which side of the 49 parallel you live, or which side of either pond, in this political polaristic environment we are all living, we need to figure out how to better get along, and acept, no respect opposing opinions.
    Both Dave and Krist are people I'd love to just hang out with... they just seem so cool - in spite of hte fact that I hear things time and again that they say, which I don't agree with.

      If he calls himself libertarian/ancap, it's clear what his opinion should be. Though there has been a lot of psychological torture deployed that has resulted in people taking surprising stances lately.

    The whole system is built to keep the people divided, while keeping the political class entrenched and out of reach. I’m glad to hear that Krist is concerned with bureaucratic self perpetuation. But, this idea of tinkering with elections a bit is absurd. Independent commissions, huh? Who are these disinterested citizens who will determine fair electoral processes for everyone, without partisanship, ideology or ambition?

    A part of Chris died when Kurt did. Hes never been the same. He was the only true friend Kurt had and truly loved Kurt.
