- Rock is Dead? Full Film: • Rock is Dead? Full Fil... Nirvana is one of the most successful bands in the history of rock n' roll and popular music. Nirvana released three studio albums: Bleach (Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, Chad Channing, Dale Crover, Jack Endino), Nevermind (Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, Butch Vig) & In Utero (Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, Steve Albini, Scott Litt), as well several live albums such as MTV Unplugged, From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah, Live at Reading, and a compilation album, Incesticide. Kurt Cobain was the driving force behind Nirvana, his songwriting propelling the band to great heights. In this video I look at how Nirvana made Bleach & the history behind every song on the album.

I have a request, can you please make a video on how nirvana made heart shaped box, and great work on this video
Watched start to finish. Hey man... I love how they had to be reminded of Big Long Now, (I’ll say it again... my favorite song from them). Look forward to checking out all these man. Hey, you wanna hear my cover of Big Long Now it’s on my channel. Got Mother Love Bone up too. Shoot there’s a bunch of stuff.
Daniel, love your videos, but I hope you'll allow me to clarify that "Drop C" story. It's impossible to unknowingly go from drop D to drop C. The process of going from standard tuning to Drop D tuning is simple, lowering the tuning of the 6th string (E) by a whole step to match the 4th string (D) in pitch an octave lower. However drop C involves first going to drop D as I just described, followed by dropping ALL SIX STRINGS an additional whole step. It's impossible for it to have been an accident in other words.
Great work Daniel. You put your heart into this. Thanks brother.
AT good call. Perhaps they just meant that it was already tuned to c and didn’t change anything?
I know I’m basically alone in this, but Bleach is my favorite Nirvana album. It’s just so raw and heavy.
mine too. the first time i heard it as a kid it completely blew my mind and changed the trajectory of my musical tastes and therefore life forever
Same. Paper Cuts is goddamn haunting.
It has some of the best live Nirvana songs :)
You will be more alone when you heard Bleach before anything else they did...and still prefer it.
You are not alone.
Can we appreciate this man, for spending 1 hour, 20 minutes, and 26 seconds, and telling us about every song from Blew, to Downer. Keep up the good work!
Thank you man! I really appreciate that :) Cheers!
@@DanielSarkissian
I would like to hear your take on Kurt Kobains "I hate myself & I want to die" one day.
u remind me of my collegemates, it was the year Kurt died. we would smoke copious amt of weed & cheap booze every night & headbang to whatever until our necks sore then discuss every song and every album , trying to figure out why he died when rock stars drop like flies then.
it was the era of long hair, hazy dorm rooms, larva lamps and u can hear rock music 24/7 when u walk down any corridor at the dorm. the coolest thing about it was, it wasn't in the USA or Europe.
the 90s was truly an awesome era. heheh
@@MrNajibrazak Great song! Without Google, for which album was it first recorded and added to?…
Bleach is such an incredible album. I used to listen to it while biking to work through the harsh winter. It got me through the cold... especially Sifting. What an amazing album.
My personal fav!
Dude, I’m impressed! I was there, I saw them all six times they came to Michigan, I even talked to Kurt for a few minutes, I cried when I saw the news report. But your obvious passion for the band, and your drive to get it right...impressive! Kudos to you sir!!
Thanks a lot John! That's awesome, hope you still got the tickets from those shows! I appreciate your support man, and that's really cool you got to meet Kurt
Also from Michigan and saw Nirvana 3 times, also talked to him for a while once
@@tdore1267 how was that experience? Knowing you got to have a conversation with one of the biggest rock legends of all time and most people will never have the experience to?
I really screwed up, they came to my town right after Nevermind came out, just before they blew up. I missed a chance to see them at a small club for $6, not long after they returned to a larger venue in the area, missed ‘em again. My wife was at both shows and said they blew the house down. Big regret.
@@bulletproofzest I caught them in St Louis right after Nevermind came out. Absolutely the best show I've ever seen. I'm a jaded musician, so my bassist had to drag me there. I said "that's the best show I ever saw... and I THINK that's my favorite band!"... lol... like it was a huge surprise.
Not just my favorite Nirvana album, but one of my favorite rock albums ever
What I think is really cool about swap meet is the way the riff st the start turns inside out. Kurt cleverly starts the riff part way through on an off beat and when the drums and vocals start the riff appears to turn inside out, a clever musical trick!
Agreed, it's not my favourite song because I'm not a big fan of the verses but that opening riff that gets turned inside out when the drums kick in and then he sings seemngly halfway through a bar.....very smart and unusual for Kurt, I don't think there's another Nirvana song that does anything like this
Yes! Swap Meet is amazing. Wish they'd played it live more. I think I've found 4 versions live on the Tube of You
Anybody else feel like "In Utero" was the PERFECT mix of "Bleach" and "Nevermind"?
Absolutely, my all time favorite album
My teenager son, 13 yrs old, has discovered Nirvana on YT recently and shown me videos he found.
Me, as a fan of Nirvana since my teen age till now, was amazed. In 90-s I was just a schoolboy in Ukraine countryside, far from U.S., but we LOVED Kurt and often surprised local dance parties by including a couple of Nirvana tracks when nobody was really asking for it. We just needed it.
Nirvana lyrics was part of my autodidact English study, actually. Now, through videos like this, I can reveal more meaning from the same songs.
Keep up your work, @Danier, it's priceless!
Hey man I hope you're doing okay in Ukraine? Love you guys and love Nirvana too!
Same sentiment as Trey here. Hope you all are doing well considering the circumstances. Much love to you and your family. It's great to hear that somebody so far away had the same experience as me with Nirvana, and I'm glad your son has discovered them.
This is some outstanding work Dan.
Don't give up.
Thank you for sharing and taking the time.
I could be wrong, but I think Drain You was Kurt's favorite. I'm not sure which song off of Bleach was his favorite, but I remember him being really proud about writing Drain You.
Man, great video! I still remember buying this album at a K-Mart around Christmas '92. It's cool to find out more about what went into those songs. 😊 Thanks
Keep the videos coming, Nirvana is the main reason I still play music to this day. I think your videos are great btw
Thanks a lot man, appreciate it!
"And dave, had a moustache"
*Zooms in on krist*
You have done such a thorough ground work that you should write a book: "Nirvana: The Early Years". As an old Nirvana fan I enjoyed this immensly. A lot of new trivia.
Excellent vid, thanks man... I played the songs and read the lyrics for each song - as you went through each track. Gonna have to pull BLEACH out and blast it today.
Great video, Nirvana is my favorite rock band, thanks for making and uploading this video, greetings from mexico 👍
I absolutely loved this. Nirvana have been my favourite thing in the world since I was 13- Im 40 now. I still have my cassette copy of Bleach that my friend taped for me in 1993. This is a fecking brilliant brilliant overview and analysis of the album. Bleach is often overshadowed by the other albums. This is a wonderfully made, attentive and richly detailed film that gives the album a well deserved spotlight. I loved all the research and detail gone into every song. Dates, times, and all the fascinating background into the different recordings, and stories from the studio and sources to the band. Incredible video. Fantastic. Watching this video in the midst of lockdown, and completely forgetting about the outside world, lost in the stores here behind the music.
Are you Irish? To my knowledge, only us Irish say "fecking brilliant"
@@nuao88 I am indeed Irish, mo chara! Slàinte to ya and hope you enjoyed watchin' this Nirvana video as much as I did!
Great idea putting all the videos in one. I really enjoyed this.
You're very welcome Clark! Cheers
This man is criminally underrated I appreciate your content keep going no matter what!
he's a huge bullshitter. he knows nothing at all about this song or most others.
Really great work with these interviews Daniel
I loved this documentary Daniel! Please! I beg you! Make the videos of another Nirvana's albums: Nevermind, Incesticide, In Utero & Unplegged In New York! Thank you!!!!
Thank you for your work! This is another really great video!
You're very welcome TJ, thanks for watching!
I just subscribed. Your documentaries are excellent.
Great to watch this !! Thanks!! Some good information… maybe a few charts graphs to go along with the voice over would be nice also ! 😍😍😍
Thanks for your video bruhh,, much appreciated... 💖
Every time the camera zoomed in on Chad's image, I kept thinking, "Oh, here it comes, he's getting canned!" Great video, man. I was just discussing your interviews with Endino and Albini yesterday with my best friend.
Thank you so much.this was brilliant, good job.
Great videos, great info. Can’t stand the ads but I understand why. Thank you.
Hey man, I really appreciate you putting the immense effort into making this. I'm surprised of how much stuff I didn't know in this video being a huge Nirvana fan.
Hey Bailey, thanks for checking out my work, and you're welcome! That's the cool thing about researching bands, you discover new things, hope to see you around on my other videos, make sure to subscribe :)
Excellent analysis. Good work, brother.
You're really talented Daniel. Thank you for the work you put in!
I love your work daniel! Especially the albini, pavitt and endino interviews!! I love how you let them talk and don't interrupt them mid-sentece constantly... That's a good tip, let them babble on if u have to, u never know where the conservation will go if u let them do all the talking...
This is really well done man!
Great interviews and great video
Awesome! Gonna check this out a bit later!
dude you're one of the best things that happened in internet in the last few years thanks a lot for doing this
agree
Great work bro
I really love this album. It has been a huge inspiration for me ever since I first heard it in early 1993. The reason it has been such a huge inspiration was because it had an actual number in the booklet of how much it cost to record it and it seemed pretty cheap at the time. At the same time the sound on the album was anything but cheap. It wasn't as well refined & perfected as Nevermind, but it sounded really good. I've always thought "If they could do it, so can I". In 1993 I had just started to play and learn guitar and I wanted to put my first band together and in 1994 I joined my first band....It has been a long road, but I kept pushing for my whole life and in 2010 I built my own studio and producing music is my favorite thing in the world.
Great job, man!
Great channel. You do an outstanding job
thanks for this video.
thanks for all this valuable info
Great work on Bleach and In Utero, Daniel. The cherry on the cake would be if you could interview Butch Vig about the recording of "Nevermind". Just tell hime you've interviewed Endino about Bleach and Albini about "In Utero" and his interview is the last piece of the puzzle.
Interesting about him getting into photo shoots. I’ve always wondered, because he seemed to “get” photogenic in them and there are a lot. His enthusiasm for film is usually looked over. Great video.
I've watched quite a few episodes of this channel and have found them to be incredibly interesting! It's crazy to hear the interviews from Steve Albini and Mark Lanigan etc. I remember buying the albums and going to the concerts so to hear so much information on another facet of the music that I consider MY soundtrack is mind-blowing!
You do a pretty good job covering it pure brilliant Nirvana is a band like a book every time I hear about them I learned something new about them like reading with certain books appreciate your Channel
Would be cool if you could make another video like this but with what gear/equipment/ recording techniques they used to make all of the tracks.
Can I start by saying this is an awesome video and especially in these stuck in the house times its needed.
Hate to be that guy who wants more more more, but this was so in depth that I was so ready for the Nevermind the In Utero 90 min docs... I'll be thumbsing those up if they ever appear!
Thanks a lot! I have a lot more Nirvana videos coming so if you haven’t already make sure to sub :) I might do the Nevermind & In Utero docs at some point down the road
Hey Daniel, I'm a new subscriber so just want to first say hi and let you know how impressed I am with your approach. Anyway, I got Bleach around the time it was released in Australia (ie: later than US, prob late 89) and have always had a soft spot for it. It's just interesting to me how much this video/doco has shifted my thinking around the album. On the one hand, it has kind of crystallised the album into reality - knowing the thoughts/ambitions/ members that were juggling this band in the early days. Touching, honestly. On the other hand, there's songs like School (poss my fav) that talk about the cliquey Seattle scene and that whole childish need to impress the crowd. I mean, the fact that Love Buzz was a concern to Kurt for that reason just baffles me. Then I started thinking about Nevermind track-by-track and it freaked me out. How much did they change for that album - just threw all that clique neuroses out and just stepped up lyrically? It's astounding how brave Nevermind is - just - full tilt into the layered pop, like he got 10years older in 2 years.
U do a good job dude...for being a one man band here doin it all. I'm kinda hooked here
Another excellent video Daniel, thank you. I love the bleach era.
Thank you Rendle!
enjoyed the video man!!
Thanks Dane!
There is a huge amount of information here. Great job putting this all together. I was hoping Paw would have gotten mentioned for their cover of “School”. Saw them perform it shortly after Kurt’s death and it was a pretty surreal moment. They were such an underrated band of the time.
Paw is a very underrated band.
Wow, you're amazing and we appreciate you. I thought I knew everything about Kurt and Nirvana, but I feel this gives me even more of a much deeper understanding and appreciation. We are all so drawn to this incredible band and we all have our different reasons, that is what makes it so special.
Fantastic job! Best documentary on Bleech I've seen!
Thanks a lot! :)
How Nirvana made “You Know You’re Right.”
Yes
Hearing how the riffs from 3 of neverminds biggest hits sound stolen.. I wonder about all of them
@@shadowsanddust2 in bloom?
@@shadowsanddust2 they're not intentionally stolen. Im pretty sure the only thing that could even be argued as something other than a timeless chord progression thats impossible to pen an originator to like Teen Spirit and In Bloom, is Come As You Are, which was admittedly by Cobain in the official bio that it came from a song called "The Eighties". But we all know that. Surely you mean stolen as they stole verse to chorus to verse movements identically or stole whole passages of lyrics right? Cause "stolen" does mean to knowingly take something of someone else's property right? I don't remember that happening but I'd love to be enlightened if you wanna chat about it.
@@shadowsanddust2there’s only so many chords man
I love what youre doing here, covering interesting topics that nobody else has and you REALLY know your Nirvana shit so total respect there.
So offer these suggestions as a fan and with love
#1 The aggressive drive to win subscribers isn't needed, and in all likelyhood will have th opposite effect, driving people away
#2 I think it might confuse people when your narration is talking about, say ,Jack Endino but at that moment you show a closeup of Chad Channing making people think Channing is Endino.I know it's a filmmaking cliche to show a shot of the person you are talking about but it's a help to people who are new to these stories and characters.
Keep up the great work
What a legend thanks for this x
Sifting is such an epic closing song and arguably intended as such for the definitive version of Bleach (I'm curious as to whether the band members had/have an assertive opinion on this)... I reckon it'd be more respectful to their legacy if future re-releases kept it as the 11 track album and the other 2 songs were included on a compilation album of non-album tracks, similar to The Beatles' Past Masters compilation. Yes, I'm a nerd! Great video, I really enjoyed this and have subscribed.
Thanks 4 posting! 1st heard Nirvana ‘Love Buzz’ on a “local”(WA) skateboard VHS video called Board Crazy back in 90’. Skate vids often used local bands for tunes. Blew us away - Negative Creep!!! That Bleach album is a BIG 1 for me...Fave!!
I wonder if Nirvana allowed it, or if it was just put on there and since it was such a small little video they either didn't find out or most likely didn't care.
Love Buzz was a cover (original by Shocking Blue) so maybe that’s why they let it slide: it wasn’t really theirs to begin with.
Gracias por todo tu trabajo!!!sería increíble que pudieras entrvistar a Krist Novoselic. Vos sos la persona que puede realmente hacerle una gran entrevista.
de acuerdo total, a ver si pasa
Your channel is awesome man!!! 🤘🏽🤟🏽🙌🏽⚡️🎸🎛📻🤯
Thanks Bobby! if you haven't already, could you subscribe?
Hey Daniel, I commend you on such a well researched video (and all the others!). Is there any way I can contact you to compare Nirvana notes?
“stoned” @2:05 on Negative Creep is my favorite moment in the entire Nivana catalogue
Mr. Your channel is pure gold. Thanks a whole lot for this material. Are you on instagram or facebook? Big hugs from Chile ✌🏼
Great stuff! I would really love to have you on the podcast. I also left this same message on other videos. I'm not trying to be annoying, I just don't know how else to get a hold of you.
Good job Daniel.
Another immaculate job Danny boy!!! Keep it up!!🤘🏻🎸🤘🏻🎸🤘🏻🎸🤘🏻🖤🖤🤩🤩😍🤩😍🥰🤘🏻🤘🏻💚💚
Thanks as always!
Bleach with its drum heavy mix, when it came out, is what drove me to buying a drum kit and becoming a drummer, as well as drumming inspiring my drumming style.
I’d love if you did some Johnny thunders videos I e learned a lot about Kurt an nirvana I’ve known a lot but you have some gems on your channel and I think Johnny thunders would be great topic
I think the trouble with Kurt is, he understood the world too well and he took it all in. We got some amazing songs but it clearly absorbed him. Great video, you've put a hell of a lot of work in this! I have subbed!
Everyone likes to try and write a sappy romantic version of whatever point they're trying to prove. The PROBLEM was , Kurt was an H junkie. I was too about 9 years ago. I made it out alive. That drug is the devil it u know nothing of it till u live it.
@@aaronl5072 you make a good point Aaron! I’m also glad to hear you made it out of that, couldn’t have been easy!
It's Maida _Vale_ studios, not Valley. It's a legendary BBC studio where most of the John Peel sessions were recorded, plus about a million others. A lot of very big bands got their first real radio play there. The cure, Siouxie And The Banshees, Napalm Death, Nirvana, the list is literally endless.
Hoping this work could lead you to interviews with Krist and Dave as well as Pat, Dale, Chad, and Jason. I think we're all on a first name basis at this point.
Great work. Only thing I'd request is to shed more light on Krist and his contributions. Didn't hear much about him in the Endino or Albini interviews.
Yes but no Dave pls
I loved Nevermind, but Bleach is what made me a lifelong fan. of course I have nevermind first, like most, which encouraged me to get Bleach
You have the best nirvana videos
Thanks Caleb :)
Swap Meet was the second Nirvana song I ever heard. I heard it once and a week later I could still remember the lyrics and melody. I was driving, still singing this song and thought "I should probably pull into this record store and buy a copy of this record". Bought it, listened to it while I drove to band practice 45 minutes away, got there and said "hey, can I borrow a distortion pedal?".
This was the first Nirvana album I ever bought and my favorite. Paper Cuts is one of my favorite songs ever
Very interesting, thank you for all your hard work. Probs best to leave the lyrics analysis alone though unless there's actual input from the artist
Paper cuts and Floyd the barber are probably my favorites. School, sifting, scoff are great too
Kurts lyrics weren’t a direct narrative, they were poetry. As such meaning comes from impression and feeling. Not lacking meaning, just different meaning.
A nirvana forever miss kurt much
Any time I hear DANGERMOUSE
I see it in the writing of Kurdt's letter to Dale in the Journals book!!
LMADO! 🤣🤣🤣
I think the first two times you said you are independent might be enough lol that’s almost as bad as the dang commercials love your videos anyway thanks for being you !
1st time Kurdt heard Love Buzz on the radio, Tracy and he were driving and he made her pull over so they could just really listen to it.
Was such a rad lil story to read!
I remember the 1st time I heard my band in the radio.
I COULDNT BELIEVE IT!!! THE SAID MY FULL NAME along with the band members names!
If I would've known that in like '93 when I 1st started rocking that station and falling in love with music... I would've called you crazy or asked what drugs u were on, then asked if you could share some because I wanna be a FAR OUT MAN also! LMADO
It's crazy hearing your band in the radio.
Our show, tour, cd release show... our big show before those with Alesana and a few other big bands.
So rad hearing the Nirvaner guys experience as well!!
Sadly, mine had the twisted fate of happening the same day Bowie passed away💔💔
Great channel man!
Hey man, I really loved the “people who worked with Nirvana” vid. Very cool stuff man. And Bleach is my fave album of theirs. Love this.
Thanks a lot man!
Kurdt got alot of his lyrics from his journals n stuff from free writing or crafting pieces.
He was WAYYY more into the sound of the words than the actual words. Again, as you said.... it's more about melody and music. That's from his words so 🤷♂️
Hes fawkin GOD!!! He could read the ingredients to a potato chip package n have it sound like pure poetry
Great fucking álbum!
Good work Daniel...
I'm sub.
GREAT video, but during the "School" section, for a bit I was LOST as hell and couldn't understand, then, about the 4th or 5th time you said "cleek", I was like "OHHH... Clique!" I've always heard it pronounced "CLICK"...
Made it through the first 2. Will watch the rest later, will rewind some, did you say anywhere where we can hear all of those drop C tuned doom experiment versions? Also re: Floyd first line when I was young I always thought he was saying Hello dumpling come on in heh
They got taped over unfortunately.
Sifting/Downer are my favourite tracks from their best album, Bleach!!!
Hey Daniel, can you PLEASE do an in depth video on Alice in Chains too? They have been dissed & passed over by the industry on so many levels, but have an important, lasting legacy of INCREDIBLE music, riffs, and lyrics by Jerry and Layne (especially on "Tripod" where they were basically using their lyrics to "talk" to one another). Would also love a _separate_ storyline on just Jerry and his life. I've spent a lot of time studying all of them, and speculating on how Jerry was forced into a solo career due to circumstances within AIC. You can plainly see his pain and pathos in the lyrics on ALL of his solo stuff, especially Degradation Trip. *You do great work, Daniel.* And I think these 2 other types of documentaries would be a great addition on your part, especially since you are so keen on grunge! 👍🎸❤
I agree 💯 percent!!! Obviously I was a 90's kid so I love all the alternative "grunge " bands......,but I'm particularly intrigued, interested, obsessed, in love with AIC and Nirvana......
I saw AIC for the first time on the 25th of September at Louder than Life in Louisville Kentucky where I live. I wish I could have seen them with Layne and Mike Starr 😔however, I feel incredibly lucky to have seen them at all. William is great with the band and has so much passion and obvious respect when singing their original songs. Anyhow, I feel like I can die happy now that I've seen them play, to see Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinney was mindblowing for me!! So, anyhow, yes please 🙏 more on them as well.
always here for anything Nirvana.
"Bleach " is my favorite Nirvana album . Love others too , but this is something special . That sound ...man !
This album holds something untouchable with no apologies, i think it's the breakable foundation and cradle for an amazing band.
At first I was apprehensive about yr channel. I had seen another Nirvana/Kurt channel pop up lately and it was pretty lame and misguided so I was just thinking that we didn't really need another YT channel dealing with a band that has been talked about to death. I have to give you props though man because you really have some interesting and worthwhile content here. Good stuff brother.
Fun fact! I met Nirvana when I was 7 and later played a show in the same dorm that Nirvana played, literally 15 years later on the same day!
6:01 "Love Buzz" is on the Blew EP because the song was NOT found on the first pressing of "Bleach" in the UK.
I hardly got through the 3 minute intro before saving it to my watch later folder.....
So I can go listen to Bleach
43:20
he was so bass about this statement
