RIO LOBO John Wayne, Howard Hawks & Bigfoot! with Chris Mitchum

- John Wayne wanted Chris Mitchum in "Rio Lobo" and sent him to see director Howard Hawks. What lead up to this casting coup for the young actor? Join Chris as he recalls Hawks, making his film debut in the Robert Mitchum classic, "Thunder Road," plus working on two of his Father's westerns, his low budget motorcycle gang meets Bigfoot movie and more in this enlightening discussion of his early acting roles with host Rob Word.
Rio Bravo was 1959, Eldorado was 1967, and Rio Lobo was 1970 - Great actor and interview and movie with excellent actors!
Longer gaps than today's remakes.
Chris Mitchum seems like a great person. Down to earth, not stuck on himself. I always thought he was a great actor and loved his movies.
I met him at the Santa Barbara Writer's Conference in 1997. He is indeed a great man with a kind soul.
What a down to earth guy Chris Mitchum. Thanks for the memories Chris and Rob!
Bless your heart Rob for working so hard on keeping the memories of the westerns alive!! We ALL APPRECIATE YOU!!! Ok take a bow!! Lol Really enjoyed this one too! 👍
_The Big Sleep_ by Howard Hawks made me a fan of Howard. _His Girl Friday_ is another classic.
I'm 22 years old currently, binge watching a lot of the older stuff to get more context in film history. It's been really fun.
Hawks may have surpassed Ford for me. So many wonderful films. Study hard!
A Word on Westerns ...Haws and Billy Wilder both surpassed Hitchcock for me...Akira Kurosawa too.
❤❤❤ I have loved Christopher Mitchum forever! He and Patrick Wayne are the reason I saw “Big Jake!” in the theater 100’s of times.
I wanted to be Chris Mitchum when I was a kid! seeing him in all of those westerns I was close to his age (within 10 or 12 years) I could relate to the characters he played and thought he was one of the coolest good guys ever, and still is!
These personal stories and recollections are priceless. Thanks for keeping the west alive for us all. I truly enjoy your videos.
what a delightful guy I really like listening to him and watching him I love these father in movies but he himself is a delight
Fascinating ! Love hearing the stories. Amazing how much Chris is like his Dad.
Listening to Chris Mitchum, I'm beginning to believe he inherited the eidetic memory that his father, Robert was said to have. The way Chris rattled of how much he made and all the other memories is amazing. As always, great interview.
I like this episode, again and again and again,,,
Westerns are the best !! May they never die😃surely miss the Duke!!
June 11th 1979, this country's been steadily going downhill ever since.
So true
Watched a long interview on the Phil Donahue show with the Duke, classic interview from 1976
His Tuscarora in Rio Lobo is wonderful - as was his Michael McCandles in Big Jake. And this interview is both really funny and informative. Chris Mitchum is great! Thanks, Rob!
Well done , going back to the years movies and actors were the best .
Chris Mitchum
Top man
Top stories
Top show
Thanks Rob
I saw Rio lobo in 1970 on the big screen wow absolutly love the color and the sound of the movie thanks Ward for this video
I would much rather see one of these great old westerns on the big screen than any of the tripe they produce in Hollywood today. One movie Mr. Mitchum and the Duke, and his sons Ethan and Patrick were all in, and one of my favorites, ''Big Jake''. What a classic!
Thanks, Wonko. Check out our AWOW episode with Chris on BIG JAKE. It's one of our favorites, too!
Thank you soo much for these talks, l love everyone and hearing the history. 😊😊
Thanks Rob . I was a big fan of the Howard Hawks westerns. I loved Thunder Road great movie.
My memory of Chris mitchum was in the John Wayne classic, Big Jake.
A great movie.
I was exactly the same - Big Jake. Love John Wayne but introduced me to Christopher Mitchum - seems like a very decent, genuine man, good actor too.
So much to appreciate in memories and film productions.
I was in love with Robert Mitchum. Lol I was a child the first time I saw him. You have his eyes. I thought that was his most sexy feature
Very much loving these Word on Westerns. Western movies are my absolute favorite movies to watch and if it was up to me its all I would watch. Thanks to channels like Grit and Encore Western we can still watch all the old westerns of yesteryear. Thanks Mr. Word for bringing these to us. I enjoy hearing all the backstories and other informational tidbits.
Thanks, J. Let's keep the western genre front and center!
Great interview, Chris always comes across as a likable guy!
Woody Strode! What a guy, I became a fan as kid when he did several episodes of Tarzan with Ron Ely. Sergeant Rutledge and Who Shot Liberty Valence were my favorites!
Thanks, Matt.
I like this interview. Very interesting.
Mitchum was one of my favorite actors.
It’s cool to see his son and hear these stories.
Thanks so much Rob . I’ve been watching Westerns since the late 1940s ,enjoy the memories !!!
Glad to be able to see him again nice person
Chris Mitchum was great in those westerns. Thank you for sharing this.
Great interview -- I could listen to Chris Mitchum tell his stories all day - he should write a book! Thanks Rob - you always ask great questions and your enthusiasm and knowledge of westerns make your channel special -- and sorry, the screen test has to be in 4K -- next!
It's so had to find decent clean movies and shows any more so I always have loved westerns and and any kind of historical period type of movies /shows .
Thank you so much for a refreshing walk down memory lane !
ME-TV for Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Rifleman, Wagontrain, Wanted: Dead or Alive etc
I love CM. He is a great actor and he seems like a very talented person and I loved his father. They were great actors
COOL 👏🏻🥰‼️
What a guy!! I sure do miss the old movies!!!
These are really good, enjoy the back stories and trip down memory lane.
Another wonderful interview! Thanks so much for your excellent work, Rob. We really enjoy your segments!!
Excellent tutorial Cheers from Pennsylvania Blessings 🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Great video. I liked all the John Wayne movies that you 2 discussed. 👍😎
GREAT SHOW...
djteddy bear Thanks. Happy Thanksgiving 🦃.
I'd pay today to see a movie with Chris Mitchum in the cast
Scott Jackson me too !!!
Check out "Big Jake", one of John Wayne's finer westerns, where he plays a cattle baron who leads a posse to hunt down and retrieve his "grandson" (his real life very young son Ethan Wayne, about 10 years old) who's been kidnapped and held for ransom. Chris Mitchum is probably in his early to mid-twenties, acts superbly and is very handsome. The head bad guy is played by Richard Boone, who played a white-hat cowboy era fixer named Paladin in his ownTV series "Have Gun, Will Travel". He was a staple character actor in Hollywood, playing good guys and bad guys just as convincingly. Most libraries have it in their lending collection although it may have to be brought in from another county library. Otherwise you won't find it in stores. You'd have to buy it through Amazon. It's my favorite John Wayne movie and if you like Chris Mitchum it's worth all the trouble in the world to view it. He's a real good actor, playing one of Wayne's sons in the posse. Go check it out.
@@danielfronc4304 That's my favorite Chris Mitchum role! I was hoping they'd talk about it. He's great as one of the Duke's sons, with his fancy talk, his motorcycle, and his automatic pistol, which causes no end of trouble...at first. Love that movie!
@@danielfronc4304
Here's a fun fact for ya, Ethan Wayne got into stunt work after his dad died, the first movie that he did stunt work in was The Blues Brothers, watch the credits at the end, among the names listed under "stunts" is John E Wayne (Ethan as he was commonly called was actually his middle name).
@@dukecraig2402 Cool! Thanks for letting me know.
Growing up in Southern Calif gave me the opportunity to see a number of movie and TV stars usually at the LA Ram and Dodger games. I also got on the Warner Bros lot for a day and watched a number of TV series being filmed in the middle 70's
Great guy, wonderful stories
Glad you enjoyed it, Chris.
We need Chris Mitchum and a few more of the classics in a resurgence of westerns the way they are meant to be.
Thanks, Rob! Chris is a great interview, so many stories.
I could listen to him all day!
I want you to know I enjoy this so much I watched the commercials all the way through for your revenue stream.
I wouldn't class myself as a Western Fan but, historically seen, this interview is extremely valuable, giving insights into an era and a part of a world so remote that it may as well be an unscripted film scene on Mars. Thankyou both, especially Chris, for the detailed candid discussion, bringing many a broad grin in astoundment.
Thanks, Carolle.
Thanks for your informative interviews. Your insights into the production of some of our favorite films is very interesting and valuable.
Thanks, JR. I ‘m fascinated with these behind the scenes stories too.
Keep them coming .. love your shows.
I love to hear actors talk about their their experiences working on movies!
It adds to the background of the movie production as well as the personalities of the actors, directors, writers, makeup artists, etc! First time on this website!
You crack me up with your phone interview Rob. Chris Mitchum has great memories and wonderful stories. Love how he just tells the stories - makes feel like I was there.
By the way Rob you're hired playing Woody. Fun.
I'm gonna start looking for my wardrobe.
Thanks for these great interviews
What a great actor
The 3 Hawks movies that were "the same" in the correct order were Rio Bravo (1959), El Dorado (1967) and Rio Lobo (1970).
@Nolan Forsyth He wasn't. His father Robert was in El Dorado.
@@Shadowman4710 WHO wasn't WHAT?
Love these stories!
another good on rob. good stories. eldarado my favorite.
Great stories...
Chris Mitchum ought to write a book.
Thank you for these wonderful interviews, Rob! It was such a pleasure to meet you and Christopher last year at the Memphis Film Festival. Looking for forward to seeing you out in the trail again on the near future!
Thanks. Don't know when we'll all be able to be back together again. Soon, I hope.
This guy is snake-fascinating. I could listen to him all day. I always loved his dad and he's just as good a story teller.
yes sir,you would be a perfect woody strode.the resemblance is remarkable.
Brilliant interviewing by you Rob, but all these clips are too short. Fascinating minutiae on the the old Westerns, lots of lighthearted banter, I've enjoyed watching the videos very much. Well done.
Thanks, Sean. I can't make them longer unless I post 12 episodes a years instead of 52. When we started five years ago, episodes were 3-4 minutes each. Now, they are 3 times as long. As you can imagine, I put in at least 25 hours a week on AWOW. Finished today's with Chris about 3am this morning for my normal 6am posting. If I want to maintain the schedule, there is no break. The shows consume almost all of my time and are killing me. At least I'll die happy!
Great interview as always.
Well done Rob!
I knew they were the same movies with different names. All 3 were fun to watch.
It's true those 3 movies are very similar.
Each movie had a character named after a geographic location. i.e. - Rio Bravo( RB) had Colorado, El Dorado (ED) had Mississippi, and Rio Lobo (RL) had - Frenchie.
Each movie had a main girl - RB had Feathers, ED had Maudi and RL had Shasta.
All three had a drunk type of guy - RB had Dude, ED had JP Harrah and RL had Mr Phillips.
They all had a scene depicting a trade of one guy for the other. (The good guy for the bad guy- in RB it was Joe Burdette for Dude, in ED it was Cole Thornton for Bart Jason and in RL in was Mr Kechum for Frenchie
All three had a shootout at the end of the movie that ended up having unexpected help. RB - the help came from Stumpy and Carlos, ED the help came from - Joey McDonald and in RL the help came from some of the guys that fought in the war with them.
Each movie had the main character played by John Wayne - RB John T Chance, ED - Cole Thornton, and RL he was Cord McNalley.
Each movie had a scene where they holed up in the town jail until the law showed up.
Each movie had a character that was funding the bad guys. RB - had Nathan Burdette, ED had Bart Jason and RL had - Mr Kechum aka Sergeant Major Ike Gorman.
All three had Dr's. Dr Miller was in ED, Dr Jones was in RL and in RB the Dr was only referred to. He was never scene.
All three movies had someone guarding someone in jail. RB had Stumpy guarding Joe Burdette, ED had Bull guarding Bart Jason, and in RL it was Mr Phillips guarding Mr Kechum.
In each movie a girl was dressed scantily clad. RB it was Feathers, ED it was Maudi and in RL it was Amelita and Shasta was in undergarments, but Amelita was topless. (Two separate scenes)
All three movies had Bad guys. RB had Joe Burdette, ED had Nelse McCloud, and Rio Lobo had "Blue" Tom Hendricks.
There are still more things but I think I got a little carried away...Sorry.
Wow, SFC. Fun facts. You can get "a little carried away" anytime! Thanks.
Just came across this channel a few days ago and Love It! Im a Big Western Fan because to me there's no movies or shows better. Love the interviews and hearing all the stories! Excited and eager to watch and hear more! Thanks!!
Thanks, Neal. Glad you found us and hope you enjoy and share these western memories with your friends. We're happy to make them available and post a new episode every Sunday morning.
@@AWordonWesterns I'll definitely be watching thank you!
Terrific interview. Thanks Rob
Thanks just the best.
Thank you too, Brent.
Great interview in a fascinating series of videos.
Chris looks just like his dad. Have this movie too
"You ready? If you ain't, I'll go by myself." -Jack Elam to John Wayne., Rio Lobo
He was a great character actor.
Priceless..
Enjoyed the interview! Keep 'em coming!
Oh thank gawd...the new music- so much better.
Thanks for another great interview.
I always love Western movie l love John Wayne the Duke. I always wanted to be an actress since I was young just didn't know how to go about. Of course I'm older. Love Sylvia 😊☮️✌️🐎
Another great interview, Rob. Thank you so very much. I love your boots, oh, and good luck with your interview......;-).
He looks so much like his dad in this video.
Excellent interview thanks for the video.
"In the Bigfoot movie his uncle John was in it with John Carradine
and I always thought that John was an underrated actor and most
younger brother actors were not as big as the older brother actors
but were still great actors and John was in a couple of Dirty Harry
movies as Dirty Harry's first partner."-🤔🖥☕🍺🌐..
Yep, thanks, Roger.
Thank you so much for making these, your a good interviewer and the guests and topics keep me coming back !
Thanks. It's nice comments like yours that keep us enthusiastic. Glad you enjoy them!
Chris Mitchum was such a hot-looking guy back in the day. So cool.
Yeah he was but I think Jorge Rivero was more attractive and speaking about his body too
Wonderful, enjoyed every second.
Isn't about time to get Dean Smith on? Bet he has a lot to share.
Dean's in two or three of our earlier episodes. Check them out. He's a terrific guy!
A Word on Westerns Guess I missed those. Will try to find them if you don't have links.
Love his classic line in Rio Lobo where he's explaining about his unit ... "kept getting smaller. Last I heard, I was all of it."
Another great vid and subject matter.
I love this stuff , takes me back a long way
use to go over to chris’s aunts house in scottsdale az in early 70’s.
Outstanding interview, anecdotes. You must have had a hoot making this one. Thank you.
Thanks, Mike. I love hearing the audience laugh and we sure do have fun making them.
I love actors talking about their experiences on movies! It adds to the information about the movie production as well as the general background of the movie!!
rob, hands down, you are the spitting image of woody strode.you would'nt even have to go to make-up.see you in the re-make sgt rutledge.
Thanks, court. Everyone says so.
One of your best!
Sad that in our day people on the industry don't even know the icons like John Wayne.
Shoot, I always thought I was slick when talking about John Wayne.. I knew that Rio Bravo and El Dorado was pretty much the same movie...Didn't realize Rio Lobo was... But Rio Bravo Remains my Favorite Western... I think Old Stumpy done it. lol
The chemistry in that movie between Wayne, Martin, and Brennen was amazing. Add a young Angie Dickinson and a decent Ricky Nelson and I feel this was the best of the 'three'. El Dorado was close (you cannot go wrong with Robert Mitchum and James Caan), with nice support from Arthur Hunnicut. I like Rio Lobo simply because it is a Wayne movie, but the whole concept is ridicules and the acting is pretty bad.
Edward Faulkner as L.T. Harris, Piter Jason as L. T. Forshite
double dated with Chris Mitchum in the early 60's with gals from stephens college in columbia, mo...I drove & he flew in from I think from U of Maryland as he was a student there at the time...reg. guy, met him that nite & never saw him again!
Great interview! Love the new theme music.
Thanks, it's by Karel Psota, my son's music partner. Check out RJ Word on any social media platform to hear their work together and the music videos.
Awesome stuff
Rob, We need to share A Few Good, Bad, & Ugly Words = Best Interview. Good: It's as if you are the Maple Tree. Bad: The Maple Sap who's mind you're tapping. Ugly: Chris's Hat(May be it's the lighting at Gene Autry's Museum? It is May, isn't it? No May be about it! Da, Dum, Dum! 🤓
i Made the jail set for Reo Lobo i but it in whale they where shooting the movie they had a big fan blowing dust every where in old Tucson i saw all the actors while i was there the years go by fast i was 24 when they made it .
