@John Caulfield Here's a bit of trivia I'll bet you didn't know, Ethan Wayne, John Wayne's youngest son, the one who played his grandson in Big Jake, was a stuntman in The Blues Brothers. Look at the credits at the end, under "stunts" you'll see John E Wayne, it was actually his middle name that was Ethan, but I guess since there was already a "John" around the house he grew up using his middle name. After his dad died in '79 his stuntman buddies got Ethan into the stunt business, he did stunt's in a few other movies and then got into the production end of movies I believe. Yea I'm a huge fan of his movies to, I was born in the 60's and raised in the 70's when he was still considered the biggest movie star in the world, that and having the name Duke I guess I didn't have much of a choice 😉😉😉

I have always watched John Wayne in any movie he was in. I never knew why exactly except that he was a great actor. Until, he made Hell Fighters. When he walks out of the oil well fire and they showed a close up of his face. I started crying right there in the theater. My Grandfather had just padded away and John Wayne's face was very red from the heat. My Grandfather was always called "Charlie Red". That's when I realized my Grandfather was the spitting image of John Wayne. I still watch at least one his movies a week.

I have a weakness, if I see a John Wayne film coming up, I WATCH IT. Doesn't matter how many times I've seen it before, I still watch the whole movie. Thanks Rob and Patrick. Loved it.
"They Were Expendable", my favorite movie. In truth if I haven't actually seen it or caught parts of it at least 100 times in my life "I'm 68" I'd be shocked.
I grew up watching John Wayne thanks to my dad. My dad loved John Wayne and now at the age of 53 I’m a huge fan. I have great memories of watching The Duke with my dad. Truly miss that but I can almost bet my dad is in heaven talking to John Wayne right now.
Man I love John Wayne and what he stood for. He's my favorite actor and in this day and time we're in man do we a John Wayne to inspire people. Thanks for the video
Gotta love John Wayne. No matter what kind of film or character, he was very believable. I loved his westerns as he stood for the rights and dignity of everyone.
Very important for Patrick Wayne to share memories of his father with the world, as fewer people every day can give a first hand account of John and his era.
I'm 58 and I have adored John Wayne since I was a child. He died when I was in high school and I knew I would never get to meet a Great American. Bless all of his Family ❣️
My sister and I love John Wayne--I wore all the VHS tapes out watching him and now I am watching him on my DVDs. He is one of the best actors ever born. Miss you John Wayne.
Wonderful interview and wonderful memories! My father always reminded me of John Wayne. When my father passed, they happened to be playing John Wayne movies all night on TV. Those movies are what got me through the night.
And on the set of The Searchers no less, the greatest western ever!!! And here I was all proud of myself because I got my picture taken sitting in the actual Sanford and Son pickup truck last year, now I feel like a real loser, I'll never show that picture to anyone again 🤣🤣🤣
Rob, you are so right about The Searchers. Every time I watch it I see something in it I hadn't seen before. So many layers and nuances. Ford's direction, Winton C. Hoch's cinematography, Frank Nugent's script, Max Steiner's score, the cast and the crew and location. Like a perfect storm. It really rises above the moniker of Best Western ever made, and ascends into the discussion of Best Film ever made. The fact that you were fortunate enough to visit the set in Monument Valley and meet the Duke is beyond serendipitous...
My father (MSG Joseph Morin) was one of 10 or 12 soldiers from Fort Bragg who was selected to appear in the Green Berets movie which was filmed at Fort Benning. I remember in 1968 going to a movie theater at Fort Bragg to watch it with the family for the first time. He had a speaking part in the movie, and I was so proud of him for that. The two weeks he was at Fort Benning for the filming, he told me John Wayne (The Duke) treated them like gold. Thanks Duke for treating my father so well, he remembered that the remaining 32 years of his life.
@@michaelm.6952 My dad met John Wayne when filming The Longest Day. My father's Battalion(82nd Airborne) was used in that film. He said Wayne acted like a regular guy and my dad was greatly impressed with him. I been a Wayne fan since a child. He was America. We could use a Wayne today in films.
Love John Wayne movies a true actor so many greats to choose from as an Irish man one of my favourites has to be the Quiet man ☘️ a will keep watching his films as long as I can. Long live the Duke
Great treat to hear from John's son Patrick. Behind the scenes of the classic "Searchers" is fantastic. Western movies have represented the United States all over the world. Thank You..!!
I am 50 years old and I have a large wall in my home of John Wayne. I grew up on John Wayne and watch him today. Just love him and all his movies. No better man.
I enjoyed every film Patrick made with his father! Especially McClintock! And Big Jake, so nice to see Patrick and Ethan work together with their father.
I was introduced to Patrick Wayne by Milburn Stone in 1955 up at West Point when Pat and I were both 15 years old. He was playing a part in The Long Gray Line. We chatted for a few minutes and I never forgot those Precious moments my entire life. Dr Robert A. Vitori ( US Army COL /RET) Author of “ The Pleasure Unit “ by Amazon . He was a legend “ The Duke”. To this day I still watch his movies n I’ve seen them more times to mention. He had a very unique voice that any one would know who that voice was. Loved John Wayne “John Duke”!
Love this what a tribute to John Wayne I’m a true life long fan and the fact that he and my grandfather favored each other ver much although John Wayne was much taller than my grandfather was but my grandfather was still tall about 5’10” or almost 6 foot tall Wayne WBA’s still taller ..... my daughter asked me who my favorite actor was without hesitation I said John Wayne and I would watch a John Wayne movie a thousand times and still keep watching till the end of my days thank you so much for sharing
You're wearing a Davy Crockett T-shirt in that John Wayne photo. At that time, Wayne did not know he would end up playing Crockett in 'The Alamo' as he only planned to direct. Great photo.
John Wayne will always be my favorite actor of western movies! The things that are told by others of him, about their personal interactions with him, always gives me the feeling that he didn't think of himself as an unattainable person to be around. That he was very personable & people wanted to be around him not just because he was a famous person, very down to earth. I think that's why he has continued to be so popular with western movie fans.
Not just Westerns though. I believe it was 1951 when my Father was recalled to duty with the Marine Corps. Between fighting forest fires he was also an extra in the ground combat scenes in "Flying Leathernecks". After completing the filming the Duke threw a big BBQ for all the Marines in the film.
Here's my favorite John Wayne story, and it came from a Green Beret. He had already served two tours in Vietnam and was currently at Ft Benning training Special Forces, when news hit that John Wayne was coming to Ft Benning to film a movie about the Green Berets he said to himself "Great, that's the last thing I need is some military wannabe movie star coming around here thinking he's gonna make a movie about what I do, if I meet him I'm gonna give him a piece of my mind about him being in so many war movies and never actually having worn a uniform". Several weeks later he was sitting in his office when he heard a commotion in the hallway, upon stepping out into the hallway he found himself standing face to face with John Wayne who immediately stuck his hand out and said "Hello, I'm John Wayne", as if he needed an introduction (that's a quote from him), he said the only thing he could think to do at the moment was to stick his hand out and shake his and reply "Hello Mr Wayne, it's a pleasure to meet you sir" and turned around and walked right back into his office. At the end of the story he said "Anyone who ever thinks they'd tell John Wayne off never stood face to face with him"🤣🤣🤣.
I met Patrick last year at The Memphis Film Festival in Tunica Mississippi. We talked about the Movie "Big Jake". He's a Wonderful Actor and I enjoyed meeting him. Thank You so much Rob, for another Awesome Interview!!!
I remember as a kid watching John Wayne movies with my dad. They used to be on Saturday afternoon just about every weekend. It's because of that I began collecting anything John Wayne. Everytime I watch a John Wayne movie it brings back the memories of sitting on the floor on Saturday afternoon watching those movies with my dad. Something I'll never forget.
Will FOREVER love Mr. John Wayne. They don't make them like that anymore. He was just like my own Father, who was a real Horseman, cattle rancher snd businessman.
My Dad loved John Wayne. He saw his first Wayne film in a Cinema of a bombed out street in London in the 30's. To his last days, John Wayne was his hero.
Here's one for ya, Joseph Stalin was a huge fan of John Wayne movies, he had them all translated into Russian so he could privately watch them. He said it broke his heart that he had to put Wayne on a death list for being anti-communist. That's no joke, he actually had two assassins sent to America to kill him but they were intercepted by the FBI when they tried to enter the country.
With all his westerns he made that I enjoy immensely I love my "QUIET MAN"!!! To this day all my daughters will not watch it!Why? They reminded me that one year I watched that movie everyday for a month!! What's wrong with that I say to them it's the best pair of people you would want in a movie! GOD BLESS ALL AND GOD BLESS JOHN WAYNE AND MAUREEN O HARA!!!
Wayne should have gotten an Academy Award for The Quiet Man, but he didn't even get a nomination because the academy was miffed at him about being a part of The Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals and it's part in the blacklisting of actor's and writer's who were associated with the Communist Party.
Always has been, always will be my favorite.... I watch his movies often ... always will ... I was 20 when he died but my children and grandchildren can tell you all about the Duke ♥️🥰
Thanks Rob for another great video. I think this was one of the best and may I say I think you are one of the luckiest people on earth to go on vacation with your family in Monument Valley and see the making of one of the greatest movies ever made and have a photo made with the Duke!
Love Patrick Wayne too. He and his Dad had some memorable scenes together. You get this mental picture of how someone is based on their on screen persona and between the Duke and my own Dad. I never thought of the great rough and tumble tough guy Cowboy/Marine etc. as a sensitive man but then here is his son Patrick explaining that yes he was. I'm glad to learn this and even my own Dad was much more sensitive and tender to me as he and I mellowed with age. Long live the Duke.
I couldn't imagine a better fantasy/dream come true, and Rob actually lived it! A summer vacation in an airstream, in Monument Valley, during the shooting of one of the best movie ever made, and meeting John Wayne at the height of his career! What a blessed, lucky man!

Great interview Rob. I’m still a huge JW fan and have been all my life. Thank you for doing these interviews and for allowing us to take part with these through UA-cam and other media. If you ever need help to keep them going, let me know. These are truly special.
Patrick Wayne - I have watched every one of your father's movies and therefore all of the movies you performed in with your father. Countless number of times. Over and over. Can likely do majority of them word by word. Except The Shootist. I watched it once. Your father was magnificent in it. Such great depth and sense of mortality (for obvious reasons). His acting, that movie, was wonderful and but I have never watched it again. I think, for me, it made his loss far more real to me than I wanted it to be. He was a great man and his request that your family in some way provide assistance to finding cures and improved treatments and care for those with cancer. The research to allow more to survive. As I said, he was a great man. Your family has done him well in your continued support of his wish. Thank you.
Ever since I first saw The Searchers it instantly became my favorite western. Not only is it the greatest western but it is one of the greatest films ever made. I also think Duke's Ethan Edwards character gets maligned too much. I think after what happens to his family he shows that all he really is is human. As far as his popularity goes...my Dad introduced me to John Wayne after Duke had already passed away. Now, my twin daughters are 10 and have known and loved John Wayne for several years. McClintock and The Quiet Man are among their favorite movies that the watch and quote repeatedly, That love and admiration of Duke was organic. I did not force feed it to them because I love Duke. He was just that good.
There are not to many people doing their job year end and year out that can be a positive image to so many. At the same time some credit has to go the directors who recognized his potential talents. His films never get old,a tribute to a good human being. Salute!!!👍
Some of the best viewing I have ever done in my life was watching the Duke. To this day if I am flipping through the channels and come across a John Wayne film, I have to stop and watch it.
My dad loved John Wayne films, his favourites, The Searchers, The Horse Soldiers, and The Quiet Man, sadly my dad passed 6 years ago, last month I was on furlough during the Covid 19 lockdown and me and my husband watched dads favourite 3 JW movies one after the other, and I swear my dad was in the room watching too,
Thomas Milner, I watch him as often as possible. We need heroes like him again. I'm 64 and grew up watching him with my parents. He represents what is right with our country. One day our country will return to morals and what is right. One day in our lifetimes. God bless
It’s always amazing how people can pick out one of his movies and say it was the best. His had several things in common. He believed in traditional American values and he tried to exemplify them in movies he made. He was a leading example of the Code of the West. It showed in his attitude, his manner of speech, his strength as a leader to defend this country. He grew on you over the years as you watched and rewatched his pictures growing up. Today I’m near the end of my life. But those special moments in so many of his films still touch the heart when you hear that voice again reminding you to be the best person you can be. How can his son not see that the type of man his father portrayed in the movies was much admired by the public.
You can never go wrong watching any John Wayne movie. Ill watch them if its on everyday the same movie. Its just pure love of his life in the movies. We all wish we could ride n shoot n fight like him.
A friend was a prop master on John Wayne's movies. They were filming in Mexico. No portapotties out in the desert. Duke went behind some cactuses and called for some toilet paper. They ran out of it earlier. He yelled out, "Then hand me some of those paper pesos."
Great interview and I'm glad you managed to meet John Wayne on the set of The Searchers!! Patrick seems like a great guy. I think She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and The Searchers are amongst his best performances, as well as Fort Apache! His final performance in The Shootist was near perfect too. I'm in the UK and in my 30s and most of my friends have a certain view of John Wayne; but his performances in those films, especially The Searchers could show just how nuance he could bring to a role and how good an actor he could be. You were right when you say, you keep seeing new things with repeated viewings. I'm not as big a Wayne fan as a lot of subscribers here, but it's impressive how popular he remains today. It's probably because he is so representative of America.
Wow! What an awesome story! Your story on your vacation to Monument Valley! The Searchers and getting that photo with John Wayne in costume! Patrick was awesome too! TYSM Bob for all you do to keep Westerns alive! ...nice pic of Yosemite too! 😃
Here's a bit of movie trivia you'll like. John Wayne's youngest son Ethan Wayne, who played his grandson in Big Jake, was a stuntman in The Blues Brothers. Watch during the credits at the end, under "stunts" you'll see the name John E Wayne. Ethan was actually his middle name, but since there was already someone around the house named John (obviously) he was raised using his middle name.
I have the usual regrets in life, one of which was never getting the chance to meet John Wayne. You were one lucky kid. Now if only I could get a copy of that picture and Photoshop it so I'm the seven year old standing by the Duke. I'm also a native Floridian, but our annual summer vacations were spent either at Indian Rocks Beach or Mexico Beach. I only recall one trip we took out of state and that was to Rockford, IL for the Experimental Aircraft Association fly-in (before it moved to Oshkosh, WI). I did make it out to Monument Valley in 1976 to pick up my older sister who was graduating from the University of Arizona, but there weren't any movie companies around at the moment, so the best I could do was stand amid the stark isolation and imagine "The Searchers" and "Stagecoach" being filmed while John Ford barked orders to actors and cameramen. Only three weeks ago my youngest watched "The Searchers" with me for the first time. It's not the same as meeting the Duke, but it's darn close, and a memory I will always cherish.
Oh yea, I'm screen shotin' that and photoshopping myself in there you just watch. I'm mad anyways, I was all proud of myself because I got my picture taken sitting in the actual Sanford and Son pickup truck last year, then here comes this guy with a picture of himself with John Wayne, and on the set of The Searchers at that, now I can't ever show off that picture again.
I'm 68 & I've always loved the westerns. From the weekly B&W/color to the B&W/ color movies, I never tire of watching them! Especially those with The Duke & those with his family in them! I enjoyed this very much!❤
This was wonderful. Ive always lived Patrick Wayne, almost as much as his father. It was great to see YOU with Mr. Wayne too, during filming of one of his best movies! Keep doing these little videos, I LOVE them! Thank you so much!!

@@stevek8829 I don't know how you would prove it either way, but I've heard about Buddy and Jerry Allison getting the idea from The Searchers for many years. I also researched it a bit and interestingly, I can't find any realistic source that claims that it isn't true. Not one. In today's world, where you can find people who will deny that a ball is round, the lack of that kind of claim may be about as much proof as you can get. Google it, maybe you'll find something that I've missed.

I still watch all of his movies even though I've seen them probably a hundred times he was a great actor and a great man
These Videos around John Wayne are Pure Magic for me. ♥️♥️♥️♥️
I'm 58 and I have adored John Wayne since I was a child. He died when I was in high school and I knew I would never get to meet a Great American. Bless all of his Family ❣️
I’ve seen The Searchers at least 20 times and it gets better every time
I am 63 years old and John Wayne will ALWAYS be my favorite actor! I love his movies!
Bless you , Virginia. You will see your Father again, one day. It will be a HUGE Homecoming.
John Wayne’s persona is timeless. As long as we care about our history, John Wayne’s name will be in our hearts and minds-never forgotten.....
Best WOW yet! How cool to have a picture taken with the Duke.
Probably my favorite John Wayne movie! I still tear up when he rescues Debbie!
If there was a person I would have like to meet John Wayne is that person.
Never Meet you heros...
Me too.
Old Cop Me too!!!
John Wayne has been my favorite actor for many years . I love his movies. I watched them with my grandpa and still watch them today.
Love John Wayne movies a true actor so many greats to choose from as an Irish man one of my favourites has to be the Quiet man ☘️ a will keep watching his films as long as I can.
Long live the Duke
I've always been a fan of John Wayne ever since I can remember when I was a kid. And he's always been one of my dad's favorite actors
Thank God for John Wayne. Thank you, Patrick Wayne another great Actor
I love you John Wayne, Rest in perfect peace A man.
Great treat to hear from John's son Patrick. Behind the scenes of the classic "Searchers" is fantastic. Western movies have represented the United States all over the world. Thank You..!!
Thank you for your story meeting John Wayne and interviewing Patrick. The Duke will always be my favorite actor.

He was a legend “ The Duke”. To this day I still watch his movies n I’ve seen them more times to mention. He had a very unique voice that any one would know who that voice was.
Loved John Wayne “John Duke”!
He is a man among men as an actor. Always a great movie star. I love The Duke!!!
I just love John Wayne. My father loved westerns and so do my sister and I. Thankyou Rob.
I always loved that 'Respect your betters' line as he pulled his son off the horse....
I love my JOHN WAYNE. I will always love him. I watch them over and over. And over
You're wearing a Davy Crockett T-shirt in that John Wayne photo. At that time, Wayne did not know he would end up playing Crockett in 'The Alamo' as he only planned to direct. Great photo.
It's also ironic that Fess Parker was almost cast in The Searchers instead of Jeffrey Hunter,..I think people know that story?
@@michaelmakes4883 Thank, Michael, I think I heard that, but I forgot about it.. Fess' life story is very interesting.
Thanks, Carolyn. Too bad there was no festival this year.
Love John Wayne! There are no actors like him any more.
SADLY MISSED ❤
Will FOREVER love Mr. John Wayne. They don't make them like that anymore. He was just like my own Father, who was a real Horseman, cattle rancher snd businessman.
“Every time you watch it it gets better” this is true. My favorite movie and each time does get better and I learn something new each time.
Thanks, Coondawg. I watched it AGAIN tonight on TCM!
Rob, loved it. Seeing a fresh-faced Patrick Wayne grow up in films was so fun. Patrick's performance in BIG JAKE always tickles me. The Duke lives!
Grew up watching The Duke. Loved him, and Miss him still. The Searchers was a special movie.
Thanks for sharing your awesome memories with us!! I will always love John Wayne & the iconic Wild West!
Glad you enjoyed it
It's 2020 and he's still the best.
I couldn't imagine a better fantasy/dream come true, and Rob actually lived it! A summer vacation in an airstream, in Monument Valley, during the shooting of one of the best movie ever made, and meeting John Wayne at the height of his career! What a blessed, lucky man!
Thanks, Ranger. I truly am.

My point? You pray to a jesus? You think jesus is your savior? HE’S NOT
If you pray to this jesus, STOP DOING THAT. When you pray, PRAY TO YAH THE HEAVENLY FATHER. YaH is Who died for your sins, YaH was Who they Crucified for you, NOT this jesus

Thank you.
The Searchers is the best!
John Ford's.........MasterPiece..............Voted The Best Western Ever Produced...................
Just hearing the music from The Searchers makes me weep!
Salute!!!👍
Awesome interview Rob! I am still a fan of John Wayne 40 years later
Aren't we all, Mike!
Some of the best viewing I have ever done in my life was watching the Duke. To this day if I am flipping through the channels and come across a John Wayne film, I have to stop and watch it.
My dad loved John Wayne films, his favourites, The Searchers, The Horse Soldiers, and The Quiet Man, sadly my dad passed 6 years ago, last month I was on furlough during the Covid 19 lockdown and me and my husband watched dads favourite 3 JW movies one after the other, and I swear my dad was in the room watching too,
Sweet. Thanks, Vinnie.
Amazing.... my dad also loved watching old John Wayne moves and passed away in 2014. You brought back some good memories.
Love John Wayne. A true mans man and such an incredible actor!
John Wayne my favorite. That was fun, thanks.
John Wayne doesn't look too bad for a 113 year old man , just watched him in War Wagon with Kirt Douglas and he is 103
War Wagon is a good fun film to watch
Thomas Milner, I watch him as often as possible. We need heroes like him again. I'm 64 and grew up watching him with my parents. He represents what is right with our country. One day our country will return to morals and what is right. One day in our lifetimes. God bless
Very cool story. Thank you Rob and Thank you Patrick.
Truly amazing! Wish I could have met him! I was born in 74 and absolutely love his movies. He was one of a kind!
You can never go wrong watching any John Wayne movie. Ill watch them if its on everyday the same movie. Its just pure love of his life in the movies. We all wish we could ride n shoot n fight like him.
Thanks for sharing the family photos, Rob. That's probably one "slide show" most of us would gladly sit through.
Need more real men like John today.
Where?
And I think that Patrick hasn't done to bad himself, I might be wrong but I think that his father did a good job with him
Wow! What an awesome story! Your story on your vacation to Monument Valley! The Searchers and getting that photo with John Wayne in costume! Patrick was awesome too! TYSM Bob for all you do to keep Westerns alive! ...nice pic of Yosemite too! 😃
When I watch a John Wayne movie today I sometimes think to myself, what Actor today could play that role as well? No one.
That's why they don't do remakes but only one. To hard to fill his boots.
John Wayne movies are always my go to. The movies today don't have any depth. Thank you for A Word on Westerns.
Timed it right!! Love Big Jake!!

J.W.'s catch phrase in The Searchers was "That'll be the day". A teen aged Buddy Holly was inspired to use it in a song after viewing the film.
Who told you that? This sounds like how urban myths are passed along.
@John Ratican Do you think it wasn't a common phrase already when the dialog was spoken in the movie? It didn't "originally come from" the movie.

Google it, maybe you'll find something that I've missed.
