This is from a TV documentary, "Shoot-Out at Rio Lobo." George Plympton was an author who had researched a book on the Detroit Tigers by actually playing one of their linemen. He then contacted Howard Hawks to get the bit part in Rio Lobo. He also researched the life of a stand-up comedian by consulting with different comics on how to tell jokes.

Fun fact: Rio Lobo was made because Robert Mitchum was angry that he didn't play in Rio Bravo! So...Howard Hawks and John Wayne agreed to make Mitchum happy!

Duke always gave a mug to people who worked on movies with him.On one side, it would say, "To ____ from Duke," with the person's name, and on the other side would be the name of the movie. Chuck Roberson had more than thirty of them because he "doubled" for Duke and had small roles in his pictures for over 20 years. I've seen his "bit" in The Searchers, along with "good Chuck." He was nicknamed "bad Chuck" to differentiate him from Chuck Howard, because he got the reputation as a "womanizer"
Rio Bravo. Starring John Wayne Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson and Angie Dickinson. Great Movie but in my opinion the 2 BEST John Wayne westerns are ...El Dorado and ...Chisum. :)
It's funny; I always concur with most of the criticism of this movie but I always enjoy this flick. I like the intro tremendously, and then the transition from Civil War to Mexican border-type surrounding that match the intro is well done. After that, the unknown actors hurt, especially Jorge Rivero and the 3 babes. Oddly, Mike Henry was left as chief villain and they didn't want to let Victor French (a better actor) develop as the heavy for some reason and he comes off useless as the villain.
I have to disagree. She was poorly directed. Each actress or actor needs different directing. All she needed was a little coaching and she would have come off better is some of those scenes. Mainly I would have told her to start by being herself instead of trying to be a character. It's always a good place to start to get a player comfortable with the set and the scene. Then vary her demands slightly from there. It works most every time.
George Plimpton was famous for what he participated in: among some crazy things -- he "fought" former light-heavyweight champion Archie Moore in a boxing match. Plimpton wanted to "taste" what it was like to be in the ring with a pro. And yes, then he wrote about it...with accuracy. The man experienced everything first hand that he wrote about. They didn't waste any emulsion on Plimpton. Do you really think a John Wayne would allow it? Also, Plimpton was one of three men who wrestled the gun away from Sirhan Sirhan when Robert Kennedy was shot. Football player Roosevelt Grier & decathlete Rafer Johnson were the others. Plimpton was actually quite a special man -- being a terrible actor had little or nothing to do with why he was in Rio Lobo.
He was a writer, and a good one. He was famous for sharing his experiences, which led to some of his books. Do your research before you say something as stupid as what you typed.

Rio Lobo was terrible. Hawks was too old to get decent performances from the younger members of the cast.
