+Miro Muro Actually, it can, as they are a random encounter. I've had to kill them all off 3 times, at three different locations. But then again, at this point I am level 78 and have been all over the map multiple times.
spoiler the asphyxiation occured after being unfrozen by Institute scientists, and they deliberately didn't refreeze them leaving them to die without life support (except for you) as you'll discover when exploring Kellogs memories, so they probably didn't breath when actually in stasis
Because the vault is, unsurprisingly still very cold, go figure? All I know is they were definitely unfrozen at the same time you were because you can wander around in Kelloggs memory sequence and see them awake and banging on the glass, which is unusual for a frozen person to do And we know that they asphyxiated, using the monitoring terminal can tell you cause of death And we also know from the overseers terminal that dead bodies are intended to be stored in the Cryo chambers should an occupant die, presumably the cold temperatures are intended to stop them rotting and producing a bad smell?
+Jack Howle better spoiler (or plothole, depending on how you look at it)... How was kellog still alive Sixty odd years after taking Shaun? He was atleast in his late 30's-early 40's when he kidnapped him. That makes Shauns whole story suspect and why I never fully trusted him. Seriously am I the only one that noticed that?
+mrkiiprototype well I only thought that because of all the screens and wheel chairs in that one room up stairs and that supposed cleaning room is what it is oh well valt tec are still sick minded people
+thenthapple can you find out the story behind Suffolk County Charter School? A pink goo experiment was tested on the kids but not a lot of information was left behind
spoiler: the Vault Tech guy who comes to your house before the bomb fell couldn't get into the Vault but he's a live ... as a ghoul who lives in Goodnighbor. go inside the hotel if you want to meet him again :) I felt bad for em
Ben Cook He knew about the nukes but he never knew of the experiments. he was trying to ell enough positions in the Vaults to win a pack of steak knives. so he was told they were luxury shelters and that was it. I felt sad too, he was a pawn.
I found the regional Vault Tec HQ a few days ago and found some Computer Logs. One of them mentioned they received crates for Vault 111 filled with liquid nitrogen.
The Tradecraft quest has a TON of lore about the war. Just check the terminals, make sure you have the hacking perk up all the way. Please check it out man.
+thenthapple for some reason it's not popping up on my map, I know it's under a donut shop. All you have to do is do the first quest for Deacon (I think, I'm pretty sure though. If not its the second one.) it's to the east of a highway about 300 yards, if you want to explore the terminals take the secret exit route when asked to choose which way to enter. Hope it helped man! Lot of info, so it'll probably be a fairly long info. Make sure to read about P.A.M. as well. (the railroad's robot they have in the east section of their safe house.)
theanthaple- please read this theory on the cry-pods Spoilers Go to Goodneighbor and do the "Memory Den" quest. it could be a virtual recreation of a memory, thus cannot be considered "cannon" but if the memory is right then the asphyxiation deaths make sense. The override brought all the vault dwellers out of cryo-stasis and the doors failed to open, as shown in game when you try to open them, presumably the pods are air tight with no oxygen supply. Thus when they were unfrozen and trapped inside the air tight pods, they died from lack of oxygen. how their corpses became frozen is still a question though.
+dominic marino Maybe that happened(Still spoiler ppl) Spoilerwall When they all are thawed, you get frozen, perhaps they simply froze everyone, seeing as you and your companion get frozen as the mercs leave.
I know its been 3 years, but here's more evidence to support this theory: Notice how when you examine every cryo pod, the residents are all in different positions? This confused me at first but after reading your comment it made sense. The reason they were all like that is because most if not all of them were probably struggling to get out of their cryo pods after being thawed out and all suffocated due to the struggle using up what little oxygen they had left.
+ChaosSandwhich Yeah I remember hearing it from Kelloggs memories I think Someone saying they left everyone else to die on purpose and that Shawn was the one who remotely released his father/mother
+The Camera Box (spoiler) Yes, that is it. :While in the memory den you get to explore what happened when shawn was taken in detail from the memories of the merc who took him. If you poke around and look in the other pods you will see the others are left unfrozen and alive so they suffocated eventually.
One thing I don't think you covered about the cryo system... Your character starts panting, heavily, and increasing in intensity until the freezing begins. Possibly, the anti-expansion agent- which is seen hooked up to each pod as the tank labeled "Expansion Chamber" or somesuch, is airborne? Some sort of fast-acting (or more realistic acting, as the game could just be truncating time for the sake of gameplay) airborne agent that the body readily absorbs. Perhaps, like that psychoactive vault, 111 could have deployed a precursor through the vent system to better prep the body for absorption, and the staff either medicated against it, or the precursor just being harmless if not otherwise interacted with.
You should do Spectacle Island, East of the castle. It has a bunch of dead settlers, and there is a crashed ship and inside it are crates labeled "Vault-Tec"
The suffocation of the residents occurs when the institute goons come to get your son, the idiots temporarily disable the cryo features, leaving the residents trapped in an air-tight pod. You can see them all banging on the glass in that scene if you tcl out :D
05:44 = I agree 100%. If everyone in the pods died of asphyxiation, then there is organic intake of oxygen and the body processes are functioning in a conventional way. If they were cryogenically frozen - then they were people popsicles - no activity in body processes, even to the point of cellular activity. Personally, why not use either a body preserving gel which is totally filling & enveloping and infused with a super-preservant chemical barrage, the person occupying a sealed tank, or some kind of Time/space displacement via quantum mechanics aligned to put the person in convoluted pocket time-space, in a contained bubble . . . I have no idea. I am amazed at your analytical prowess, covering options and possible / probable influences, effects, etc. You are bold enough to tag BS as BS, using scientific process of elimination. Bravo, Mr. T.
Paul Ponce The Crater of Atom is basically the "Ground Zero" of the Commonwealth, it is where the bomb that you see in the pre-war opening scene dropped. The Super Duper Mart is an area in Lexington, it is COMPLETELY infested with ghouls, and sometimes it harbors a Legendary Ghoul. Its also a place shown in the trailer for the game. ;)
Now this is what I have been waiting for. GREAT video, as always, and a good start to a new series. You just keep em coming, and I'll collect/watch them. Thank You.
Apple. Next you should do one on Dunwich Borers, From what i seen in the flashbacks there, The place was used as sacrificial grounds for the old ones :P
If I remember right a later mission a dangerous mind says that the residents died when your wife was unfreeze every one was but you where the only one to refreeze
Legit Gamer Me neither really. I played this in 2015-16 and stopped playing all together till 2018 again. I completed the game but completely forgot how good it was and a lot of stuff related to it. I just thought that the world was ending and some dude coincidentally knocked on your door right when the nuke was being launched from China or wherever and we hid inside, got awoken a few weeks later and some bloke stole your baby for whatever reason and then you awake 60 years later to find him. Can't believe it's took me this long to return to it.
I'm so glad you're doing these videos! I absolutely love Fallout 4 and I love your channel! c: Another great video by you I hope you keep them coming! :3
SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!! If you go back to kelogg's memory it shows all the other people in the pods breathing and awake like you, it also shows one of the institute scientists disabling the life support for each pod to leave "no witnesses." Thats how they died from asphyxiation. The only reason they left you alive is because they were gunna use you as a backup incase shawn didn't work out.
if you actualy played fallout 4 you would later learn that the other vault dwellers were left un frozen for who knows what reason but Kellogg the person you see on the cut seen is talking about a backup wich is you (player) and would be a backup if saun failed.
Dust hasn't even settled from the release drop, and you already have a FO4 lore video out, just as in-depth and interesting as your usual ... a consummate professional, you are. Well done, bud.
A few questions. At the start of the game, was the Sole Survivor and family frozen first and then baby Shaun was taken? So the 200 years went by then they came and opened up the pod and took the baby? Or did it happen before? Almost immediately after they entered the cryo pods. Also, when the main character leaves his pod why does he continue to assume Shaun is still a year old even though he's told that it's 200 years after 2077. Also, how did all the workers in Vault tec die? From old age? Did they starve?
+Shaftell shaun was taken from a cryo pod about 60 years before you get out and the main character thinks that shaun is still a year old because his last memory is shaun being taken away and his brain thinks that it's the same year because that's the only information it has on how long ago shaun was taken
How do we know that it was 60 years? Is this information that we find out later or am I supposed to know that? The way it looks when the scene is shown is that it happens almost right after you get put into the pod. So he gets put into the pod and 60 years later they open up his wife's pod and take the baby?
Maybe the life support kicks in once the pods are defrosted? Once the remote (or manual override) was initiated, maybe the defrost happens to all the pods at once? Could be the reason why they didn't want any life saving attempts unless 80% of the people were already dead? Seeing the protagonist's and his wife's pods were opened up as the cryostasis was reversed they got air, but the others didn't.
5:58 Or perhaps the residents suffocated due to their pods malfunctioning when Kellogg woke us and our character's wife/husband up from the pods. We know they considered our character a backup, but what about the others? They might not have reinstated the life support for their pods and simply let them run out of air and freeze to death. Granted, that's a stupid move, as if the backup dies, you've got no more pure pre-war human genetic templates left to work with, but...eh, it's the Institute, they may be smart, but they DO have their dumb moments.
Awesome! Thank you! I work in a barren, remote part of west Texas and I've been away from home since May. My gaming rig is at home and I won't see it until maybe February or March. I've been keeping sane by following your posts when the WiFi at the hotel is actually working faster than dial up. God bless you.
The asphyxiation bit--a bit later in the game when you start looking into the baby Sean with help of Nick Valentine and an "item" you're left with after Fort Hagen--it appears that when the bad guys went to get Sean at the beginning of the game, they woke everyone up in their pods at least partially--but only refroze the Sole Survivor (as a 'backup', as the dude who shoots the Spouse calls the Sole Survivor just before that little scene) leaving the rest to suffocate after they ran out of air in the pods, at least I believe.
+thenthapple, please bump the fov during first person perspective shots. You'll save some of us dizziness plus that wider frame actually gives You more space to show stuff and looks better :)
I would say it's not truly a cryogenic freezing, but a age-slowing hibernation. With oxygen being pumped into the pods and the freezing might mean the bodies just had an extremely slowed aging process.
"A bullet hole on the floor, which means he might have killed himself or someone else did" I'm thinking a Radroach got him since they have been crawling around for who knows when.
@10:45 the Wattz electrobox generator arcs electricity throughout the entire fallout franchise, all the way back to the original interplay games. Its practically a standard feature of all Wattz Electronics backup generators.
Well yeah, a hex based movement system kinda restricts players from mucking about too close to them in the original series, but they would play an arcing animation regularly and f2 included a snapping and crackling sound effect that would be added to ambient sounds map sounds. I think there may have been electric shock damage if you failed a repair or science roll on them in Ftactics, but its been a while.
I enjoy the details of going into the cryogenic process, and got particular interest in the cellular crystallization bit. This could be quickly explained by the gases that are sprayed into the pods prior to the freeze, as inhalants are one of the fastest forms of chemical breakdown and circulation within the human body.
I haven't seen anyone mention this in the comments, so here's my idea. What if the people of Sanctuary had the additive or whatever was needed to induce the cryostasis added to their water supply. The water would dilute the additive enough to be non toxic at first, but allow it build up into their system.
The random encounter of named gouls are all your old neighbors who were outside the fence when you got in

Shaftell you can learn the information later in the game
So shaun is 60 years old when you find him?

+jesse meeks yeah maybe it was
and on a plus side the children of the atom are even living in the crater where it hit
I love the ending sequence you chose! Noice!
Cool logo at the end ;).Very happy you started this series .Keep up dude .
+Rafiq Bens I will, thank you
Frozen was a good movie.. I was like "WTF"
It is a good movie.
Neku Sakuraba i meant what frozen has something to do with fallout 4 it was good of course

Guys who would rather want a pipboy than an iphone
easy choice. pip boy!
iPhone is shit I would rather a samsumg
+Spencer Schexsnayder *samsung
+Spencer Schexsnayder so you don't want to magically teleport anywhere?
I want a Pip-Boy 3000 (or any other model from all of the games)
Hogwash!!
Bet u had fun makeing this one, can't wait for more
Frozen isn't a great movie
You’re right Frozen 2 was better
Idk if its just me but i honestly prefer the graphics from fallout 3...
Me too,man,me too.
nopenopenope
+James Cioffi, Aesthetics or Graphics?
im done, well if u want shit graphics, be my guest
***** Aestheticly, obviously the graphics aren't "as good", but there was something superior to the old textures and colors.
Frozen WAS NOT a great movie. it was a remake of Beauty and the Beast
+hopewec XD
5:58 Or perhaps the residents suffocated due to their pods malfunctioning when Kellogg woke us and our character's wife/husband up from the pods. We know they considered our character a backup, but what about the others? They might not have reinstated the life support for their pods and simply let them run out of air and freeze to death. Granted, that's a stupid move, as if the backup dies, you've got no more pure pre-war human genetic templates left to work with, but...eh, it's the Institute, they may be smart, but they DO have their dumb moments.
usual excellence, man. Keep em coming
Great video man. I didn't read the terminals so this cleared a bit up for me, thanks.
+Laura S. you are welcome
im so glad you continued the fallout lore videos into four
+Dave Murray so am I
Awesome! Thank you! I work in a barren, remote part of west Texas and I've been away from home since May. My gaming rig is at home and I won't see it until maybe February or March. I've been keeping sane by following your posts when the WiFi at the hotel is actually working faster than dial up. God bless you.
+David Elias I am sorry to hear that. Hopefully my videos will help a bit
They do! Getting closer to home and more financial stability and closer to giving back to those who have helped me like you.
dude, im glad your doing this again thanks for all your work
+zack kirkham you are welcome
this is my favorite FO4 lore video.
So keen for your other fallout 4 legend videos.
great first fallout 4 lore vid bro, heres to the first of many!
Kellogg never refroze the others. You were the "backup" the rest were ment to die.
+thenthapple, please bump the fov during first person perspective shots. You'll save some of us dizziness plus that wider frame actually gives You more space to show stuff and looks better :)
Will never tire of these fantastic videos.
This channel is still fun to watch even though he’s gone.
Like the first northern irish gaming channel ive seen good job
Frozen-was a good movie.
Nice work, and thanks for that tip on Dogmeat! XD
love these vault legend videos !
A perfect start to a perfect series
I have been waiting for this you did a great job dude
You are one of the most talented commentators I have ever heard please start streaming and popping out videos more
+Ben Burnett I can only manage one a week
I fuckin love that comment about the overseer being like a dragon! LOL
@10:45 the Wattz electrobox generator arcs electricity throughout the entire fallout franchise, all the way back to the original interplay games. Its practically a standard feature of all Wattz Electronics backup generators.
+SarafanUnin I can't remember being damaged by them before
Well yeah, a hex based movement system kinda restricts players from mucking about too close to them in the original series, but they would play an arcing animation regularly and f2 included a snapping and crackling sound effect that would be added to ambient sounds map sounds. I think there may have been electric shock damage if you failed a repair or science roll on them in Ftactics, but its been a while.
one of the most tame experiments from vault-tec... CHILLED me to the bone xD
I just realized how much of a nerd I am for your videos. I just fucking nerdgasmed so hard when I saw this video was uploaded.
I enjoy the details of going into the cryogenic process, and got particular interest in the cellular crystallization bit. This could be quickly explained by the gases that are sprayed into the pods prior to the freeze, as inhalants are one of the fastest forms of chemical breakdown and circulation within the human body.
+SilencerNate yeah it defo could've been the gases
the gun that you get in the begging of the game. when you first start the game
wow great first ep hope to see more, wonder why there is one dislike well in the immortal words of apple "keep it to your self"
I still don't understand why do we still trust Vault-Tec. Great video it seems you did a great job researching.
+DrewTheProfessional i am sure the truther seeker like my self the elites and alex jones knew
I haven't seen anyone mention this in the comments, so here's my idea. What if the people of Sanctuary had the additive or whatever was needed to induce the cryostasis added to their water supply. The water would dilute the additive enough to be non toxic at first, but allow it build up into their system.
