The intention was to study a plethora of things such as social pressures, types of governments, cryo-preservation vs natural procreation vs unnatural procreation, the terraforming of other planets (Via Gecks), etc. Every experiment served some goal to determine how to get humans to another planet as we had ransacked ours in the fallout timeline.
7:00 "arming ourselves with a security baton"... I've plaid through the game multiple times and never before realized that there was a baton I could take. I was busy punching those damned bugs.
Today is Memorial Day. You have absolutely no Idea. Truth is, those BadAsses Live, and Lived Among Us. Also: The US Army tested the Viability of Nuclear-Ready Infantry. As in, Infantry, moving into the Blast Zone in the immediate aftermath of a Nuclear Bomb. Sort-Of. Operation Buster-Jangle.
I always figured the vertibird that crashed into the museum was the one outside Vault 111 on the day the bombs fell. They could have had a stopover at Vault 111 en route, transferring essential personnel. Who woulda thought a video game recreation of a historical site wouldn't be accurate.... IRL, everyone on the elevator would have been cooked to a crisp before it even began moving. The cool thing about FO4 is that, even after many playthroughs I still discover new things. For example, I never noticed the security baton on the crate before. It really doesn't matter because radroaches are a one punch deal anyway. I don't think I found the Red Menace holotape until my third time. I never waste the ammo on the roaches. As for the fallout issue, it really all depends on the nature of the bomb's construction as to what specific isotopes will be in the fallout. If the bomb we see going off near Vault 111 was a ground burst, then you might not have got cooked while standing on the Vault 111 elevator, waiting for it to move. They would likely not have been in line of sight of the nucleus of the blast which would have blocked the infrared burst which could have instantly cooked them to char. It is likely the massive crater to the south was once a major strategic installation that was heavily fortified, where a ground burst would be appropriate. The existence of a nuclear weapons stockpile there could explain the Glowing Sea. They might destroy the bunker but not cause all the nuclear material stored there to go critical.
I always thought that little minuteman statue was just something the sanctuary neighborhood put there to honor their state's history, didn't know it was an IRL monument, that's cool.
17:27 I noticed some barrels laying near the APC so I'm willing to guess that the vehicle was being used to transport whatever was in those barrels. Perhaps the flash from the nuke temporarily disoriented the driver and he lost control and crashed, or perhaps he saw the detonation in the rear view mirror and floored it to get away and he crashed from going too fast. The crash ruptured the barrels and the driver was poisoned from whatever was in them or he did escape from the wrecked APC but was seriously injured and in shock and eventually succumbed to his injuries.
Don’t worry, still have a dozen or so 76 lore videos to go before the material to make new lore videos becomes scarce, I’m just starting to branch into the others as that time approaches.
@@IrresoluteCartographer the mention of the premises for cryogenic freezing of vault test subjects might be linked to other vaults that mention space travel to other planets
I think the Enclave space colonization thing was an idea from Van Buren, the unpublished Fallout 3 from Obsidian. What I’m wondering here is more why they had to be unaware of the freezing before it happened. The only thing I really could guess was that the anxiety from knowing you’re about to be frozen would adversely affect your chances of surviving it, but that’s purely guess work.

I think I remember reading that there besides military infrastructure, there were also industrial zones. Perhaps whatever power generation had reactor malfunctions.
@VaciliNikoMavich People often point out how Chernobyl is so clean now, but that's because the Soviet and later Ukrainian governments spent years and millions of rubles cleaning up the place. There are certain places where the clothing worn by firefighters who responded to the accident was discarded because it was covered in radioactive dust. So imagine what would happen to an area that suffered multiple Chernobyl-level disasters but nobody was around to clean them up. I'm not against nuclear energy, I support it if the risks are understood and respected.
@@twistedyogertalso something to consider, i think when Bethesda was working on this game, they probably wanted to research things about WW2. i can't confirm that part, but the fact the pre-war part feels alot like when America dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the blast from what i understand on a scientific standpoint. that radiation spread for miles, even as far almost to Tokyo. so if you look at a map of Japan, if one bomb can cause that amount of destruction, which took them a long time to rebuild, im thinking that's what they came with up. still Fallout has always been a true post apocalyptic world, i know some people aren't religious, but one thing we know about mankind, we can be our own worse enemy at times. And just like with all these conflicts happening in different parts of the world, i do think some day America will have something happen to us we never think could happen. but still to use the words the world really has ended, that means that wouldn't be an ordinary explosion. on the news station just before you leave Nate and Nora leaves the house with Shaun, the news man confirmed that the bombs hit New York and Pennsylvania, so to reach all the to Boston, that means the explosion would be like a meteor hitting the planet. with radiation like that, i can see why you have something like the glowing sea. Fallout New Vegas has some parts that are like that to, like if you go too far into certain parts that have radiation, without a suit you wouldn't make it long. well in Fallout 4, power armor is really the only way, but it's still not safe because of radscorpians and deathclaws.
Just randomly stumbled on your channel. Your Fallout lore videos seem very different from other channels…some very interesting ideas. Will be binge watching for sure.
Here's my thought on why the Sole Survivor was spared while everyone else was let go. We know that the Institute was researching human augmentation. Given the fact that either Nate or Nora can take down a Courser, by themselves, suggests that they are not entirely human. Perhaps they were both subject to a Steve Rogers serum?
... I had so much fun with the synth theory. Too bad it's not true. Your theory would work for nate but why nora? Then again without some kind of help how did a lawyer have all these combat skills...lol.
@@waitwhat1029 Fore Nora, I direct you to all of Fudgemuppets backgrounds for the female builds they have. Sure they are not canon to Bethesda's narrative but who knows? :)
@@loka7783 ... With bethesda sometimes we have to go out of canon just to make anything make sense. Lol. Amazingly detailed and complex open worlds? Yup. A cohesive story that makes sense...not so much. Bless their hearts.
The vertibird didnt flg away if you look at it before the nuke goes off you can see it shuts down its engines (i think it also starts to fold them in but its been awhile since i played fo4 and looked) but since the engines were off i could only assume the shockwave flung it miles away, outside of the map
While that would make sense, as far as I know the Enclave space travel story never made it into a game. Though Tim Cain had that in mind, it has never made an appearance in a Fallout game, and thus is not canonical.
I recall seeing some fanwank theory to reconcile the cryolator as something the 111 Overseer either had ideas for (and left notes) at VTU or saw similar research for at VTU.
I have started many new games on fallout 4 (never finished any), and have never once noticed the potential connection between the missing security officer and Nordeghan Beach! 😮
I like to subscribe to the theory of section A being a seperate facility like what happens in the America Rising mod. It makes more sense to have a secret section of the facility specifically for VIPs under the same cryostasis conditions hidden away and managed by the government directly.
This video made me really nostalgic and happy 😊 which I realize is weird to say on a video about a post-apocalyptic morally corrupt vault. But I love this video!
One of those pointless things I have always wondered is why they built a complex lift system when it's already on a hill? Why not just have a gated tunnel leading to the vault door like in most other vaults?
So my theory on why they kill the other 111 dwellers is that since the Vault wasn't necessarily intended to run for 200+ years, they realized it was running out of cryo-fuel or w/e, and didn't have enough to keep the other residents supported indefinitely, so they axed them to make sure the Sole Survivor would be kept alive until they potentially needed them.
It's odd that the soldiers that were protecting the vault didn't enter the vault. They calmly died with the rest. It's funny that no matter how much a writer thinks things through, there are so many holes in the stories. In video games, the holes can exist because they only have so much room before the gaming system malfunctions. The weirdest thing is that most people won't notice the holes in the stories until they re-watch it numerous times. Our brains just accept the holes the first time we see it. Major LOL!
All evidence indicates that the soldiers left the site after they did their duty and guarded the vault when it was loading on the day of the bombs. I see this as a mark of their honor that they didn’t attempt to seize the vault for themselves.
I wish one thing that was added was Nate questioning why the military was deployed so quickly. Him being a decorated veteran, you’d think he would be suspicious but I guess nuclear war doesn’t really give you much time to ask questions lol
I feel like they wanted whatever was left to keep the backup alive longer instead of running out of whatever life support they had left keeping everyone alive.
I think the Institute needed a new source of DNA, not because of radiation, but because of inbreeding over the course of 140 years -- because if the Institute shelter wasn't good enough to protect from radiation, why would a Vaultec Vault be any better? Also, the residents of vault 81 would have been as protected as the residents of vault 111 - but they would have suffered from the same inbreeding problem as the Institute -- so they didn't go that route...
Don't know is vertibird fly like helicopter or not, but in movies, helicopter often spins around uncontrollable before crash. So, the direction that vertibirds face in the game might not be the direction those aircrafts were heading.
The vertibirds are like the Osprey aircraft in the real world, they have dual propellers that swivel to allow vertical take of and landing like a helicopter, while keeping the faster flight like an airplane. You’re right though, their direction on impact doesn’t necessarily indicate their trajectory pre-detonation.
@@IrresoluteCartographer Most likely the pilots would attempt to glide as if the Vertibird were a plane after the engines failed. The detonation probably temporarily blinded the flight crew and they were unable to see where they were going as the doomed craft quickly lost altitude.

Good video. Big fan of FO4 on the PS4, massively modded (of course). Bethesda game, meaning "Why bother? The modders can fix that." Always felt this applied as much to the background / lore as to what they did, or didn't do with the game itself. I am vaguely aware of US history, and had heard that Sanctuary Hills was sitting on what is a historical site ./national park in the real world. Thank you for the added detail. I'd quibble that the facing of a crashed Vertibird would not necessarily have any bearing (pun unintended) on the direction it was flying beforehand. If there was a mid-air loss of control, it could have done literally anything before finally crashing - flown straight OR 'spiralled in'.. So the Verti due east of V111 could still be a contender, not that this really matters. At least some of the US military and intel bases were specifically at a heightened state of alert before it all hit the fan, seen in their terminals and notes.. Let's be honest, there were a lot of Vault-Tec experiments that seemed downright stupid. I 've often wondered if it all came down to VT executives asking each other, 'What sick stuff will we do to people in THIS Vault?" and then randomly pulling scribbled-down ideas out of a hat. "Kittens? Psycho? Flamethrowers? I LOVE IT!!!!" As regards the bomb detonation actually seen ingame, good job on the backtracking. Given the crater, extent of the destruction and the fallout, it must have been a biggie. But we only see that specific detonation, and then quickly go underground, so lesser follow-up blasts MIGHT have also occurred. No obvious blast zones for these, but Boston was not an insignificant city, so I expect that there wouldn't be simply one big bomb and that was all. Thinking that Vault-Tec could have deliberately screened the V111 supervisor for certain psychological traits. Was an experiment going on INSIDE the experiment we all know about? There is zero evidence of this, but it would be completely in Vault-Tec's style. I'd point out that "parallel" inventions and discoveries are surprisingly common throughout history. Various instances exist of groups and individuals coming up with remarkably similar ideas, with no prior contact. The Cryolater could be one of those things, or it could be as simple as both inventors, just happening to read the same source at some stage. Maybe the Cryolater was first seen as a villain weapon in an 'Unstoppables' comic book? Purely hypothetical, but it'd make sense. And yeah, the Institute's deliberate extermination / mass murder of everyone else in Vault 111 makes no sense at all , except as an in-story illustration of how they operate. We see that again and again - University Point, the FEV Lab, etcetera. Some people go on about how the Institute is the "best" faction, but their tech is the only reason to go with them. Leading to another gripe - whether the Institute, or the BOS or the Railroad, you can rise to high rank / influence in any of these, but cannot do a damn thing about how they take care of business. I feel like trying to steer them onto different paths could have been an very interesting aspect of the overall game, but no. My own head-canon prefers destroying the Institute, with an EVENTUAL Minutemen-Railroad alliance, but that's just me. :) Btw, I do like that you used a greening mod for your game. That aspect of FO lore never made any sense to me - nature is incredibly resilient, and we only have to look at Chernobyl to understand what would eventually happen in time, with even severely contaminated areas.
That guy who waved the contract was kinda stupid. He was staring down the barrel of a 10mm pistol held by guards who had just shot up the place and killed the overseer and the other scientists. Those guards weren't interested in taking prisoners.
I always thought the Virtibird at Vault 111 was the same one that attempted to take off again and crashed into where you eventually find Preston. The Holotape does say multiple flashes, which would of took it down.
It’s possible, but given that their destination, West Stockbridge, is at the far western end of Massachusetts, why would the pilot have flown southeast toward Boston after the bombs when his destination was in practically the opposite direction?
@@IrresoluteCartographer Take off from the vault, circled around to avoid the power lines. Curiousity of what things looked like from the first blast? Confusion of direction from panic from first taking off. Its not that far from take off to crashing.
4:43 You’re telling me the Vault Tec Representative survived that with his Brain Cognition intact? 😂 Sucks for the Sumners, the Donoghues, and those other 2 Families.
It's definitely possible, but I think that if they did they would have slapped their logo on the Sanctuary Hills sign. They were very big on brand recognition.
It's also interesting to know that the scientist had no problem deceiving the townsfolk. But, when they believed that the overseer was deceiving them, then they turned against the overseer. Hypocrisy is something that plagues us all. It's okay when someone lies to someone, but when someone else lies to them, they get angry. Major LOL!
The entire vault staff did lie to the vault dwellers, but the science team and the overseer were aligned. The overseer lied to the support and Security staffs not to the science team.
@IrresoluteCartographer They still lied to each other and were morally defiant when they figured it out. One wrong doesn't make something right. If I lied to you and then you lied to me? Justice isn't served. Because neither one of us can trust each other. We have only solidified the evil. But, if I lied to you, and when confronted? I apologize, and except the punishment for the lie, a trust can be reestablished. Evil has never truly fixed evil.
I would like to find out what exactly happened in the vault while The sole survivor was frozen because I've read on terminals. In vault 111 that talk about some sort of uprising amongst the support staff and security forces.
I've always assumed the reason The Institute only kept the player character alive in the vault was that all of the remaining resources could then be dedicated to you, instead of splitting it among several survivors... keeping the player alive and viable for longer.
That one is just northeast of Lexington. It’s possible that it’s related, but it would take them closer to Boston and its impact sites, rather than toward safety.
Given the institute has power issues and they have patched into power sources above ground they probably cut the other pods so they would have more to draw on. Also just in case a generator failed only powering one pod would increase the odds of Nate/Nora surviving in case they needed them.
I believe the course of events was this: 1. Bomb comes down, elevator descends carrying the last of the dwellers (player family included). 2. In a panic, civilians storm the gate and are gunned down by the soldiers. 3. Soldier evacuate while the elevator returns to the surface. 4. New group of civilians push past the now unguarded gate where they confront vault security preparing to descend. 5. Vault security team kill this second group and descend into the vault before the nuclear fallout arrives.
There are some holes in this documentary. The scientist at the exist, with the pipboy, probably didn't close the door after the other staff left. His arm is severed from his body, and he probably bled to death. The other staff used his pipboy and left him to die. Also, the vault automatically closes after the survivor leaves the vault. So, even this commentator misses numerous little details.
Just checked this, the door does not close behind you. The elevator does, but that’s because it rises to closed as a part of the process of its operation. The skeletal arm of the scientist is lying right next to his body as though it was still attached when there was flesh there. I contend that they broke his arm when forcing him to open the door.
@IrresoluteCartographer Well, the arm is separated from the body. Every other skeleton in the game shows that they are complete until you move the skeletons. The evidence points to the idea that the people cut his arm off and used the pipboy, then threw the arm and pipboy on the floor. Also, the arm with the pipboy doesn't look like the whole forearm. It looks shorter. It's possible that the scientist hit the button before bleeding to death, closing the door? But considering the horror within all of the stories, Bethesda wanted this to be just as dark. I also forgot that the door leading to the elevator doesn't close automatically. The door at the top of the elevator does. But not the door at the bottom. That is my mistake. Either way? It's just fiction. It never happened. Human beings have limits, and the stories will have limits and holes in them as well. You can still learn something from the moral dilemmas in the story. I learned that my memory isn't perfect. But, the severed arm left a strong impression on me that I was able to remember those details.

Fallout Lore has become my cozy content. Thank you for all the hard work you put into this lovely lil deep dive
i love that youtube pushed this video and it’s amazing to see the effort you put into this video
7:00 "arming ourselves with a security baton"... I've plaid through the game multiple times and never before realized that there was a baton I could take. I was busy punching those damned bugs.
got this video in my recommended, 3 years ago too damn, hope you're still creating
I am indeed. Fallout on Prime reviews at the moment, but I’ll be back to producing regular lore videos soon
Respect to the soldiers who knew they would die.
In America Rising 2, you find another section of Vault 111, but it's the Enclave wing 🫣
Definitely the best alternative story mod.
It should have been an option to make it your base of operations in fallout 4, thats without having to make it a mod
A second vault tec workshop would have been great there.
Yeah in regards to getting a version of the map, I agree and always take the fast travel game time that passes as the true time it takes to get there
I feel horrible for the family that said, “THE COAST IS PROBABLY FAR ENOUGH” going to the glowing sea.
30:05 Classic Vault-Tec. Style over safety, they also probably knew what the Vault was going to do and saw no point to adding a better entrance.
Yay, wasn't expecting a FO4 vid from you, was getting used to learning about Appalachia, but still, 😎👍
Don’t worry, still have a dozen or so 76 lore videos to go before the material to make new lore videos becomes scarce, I’m just starting to branch into the others as that time approaches.
@@IrresoluteCartographer not complaining dude, it's a welcome mix.. Fallout lore is Fallout lore 😉
@@IrresoluteCartographer not an unreasonable assumption.. such an experiment would no doubts require subjects in a normal/reasonable state of relaxed and without elevated levels of adrenaline that affects heart rate and blood pressure...
The show vault in the NukaWorld galactic zone mentions space colonisation and using vaults on alien worlds...
Also, I think (I could be wrong here, it's been a long time) that the show vault in the capital in Fallout3 mentions similar
Randomly stumbled upon your channel, and honestly I was shocked when I saw how many views you get per video. I was expecting to see hundreds of thousands of views! Your videos are very interesting and very well done, I can see you put a lot of effort into making them. Keep up the awesome work, brother!
Yeah with the glowijg sea, i had a theory that "We don't know what *else* was near the Sentinel Sites, so...it could have chain detonated other things.
Plus with the New Plague out and about, its possible some subsequent bombings were biological too.
I think I remember reading that there besides military infrastructure, there were also industrial zones.
Perhaps whatever power generation had reactor malfunctions.
@@twistedyogert Probably!
@@twistedyogert It would look so disgusting, I can’t imagine…
@@twistedyogertalso something to consider, i think when Bethesda was working on this game, they probably wanted to research things about WW2. i can't confirm that part, but the fact the pre-war part feels alot like when America dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki,
the blast from what i understand on a scientific standpoint. that radiation spread for miles, even as far almost to Tokyo. so if you look at a map of Japan, if one bomb can cause that amount of destruction, which took them a long time to rebuild, im thinking that's what they came with up.
still Fallout has always been a true post apocalyptic world, i know some people aren't religious, but one thing we know about mankind, we can be our own worse enemy at times.
They crashed not too far away, the one in Concord, another by the satellite array, and one more in the water by Covenant.
In the fallout survival guide has direct evidence to the fact that the bombs are lower powered (200-750kt) but produce more fallout.
I think the experiment was designed to provide info that would be used for long term space travel.
While that would make sense, as far as I know the Enclave space travel story never made it into a game. Though Tim Cain had that in mind, it has never made an appearance in a Fallout game, and thus is not canonical.
@@IrresoluteCartographer yet.
I enjoyed this so much omg it was nice to see v111 be explored for once
Great video, the music pacing and b roll are perfect. Keep it up!
I like to subscribe to the theory of section A being a seperate facility like what happens in the America Rising mod. It makes more sense to have a secret section of the facility specifically for VIPs under the same cryostasis conditions hidden away and managed by the government directly.
That's an interesting concept, I wonder if we'll see anything come of that
Great video man just played through fallout 4 again definitely a classic
I named my son after Shaun in the game. This game will forever give me nostalgia.
Good video! New to Fallout and love watching this type of content.
This video made me really nostalgic and happy 😊 which I realize is weird to say on a video about a post-apocalyptic morally corrupt vault. But I love this video!
Awesome video, very good summary of a bunch of information.
Instant like. Amazing.
@Ruckus907 if I see the notification from the UA-cam Studio app, I check it out. I’m glad you liked the video.
One of the more plausible theories.
15hrs ago, weird
@@Walrus-fg8ch Dont worry about me. I’ve been holed up in some irradiated dive bar with raiders swarming outside. I think I’ll be ok…
I feel like they wanted whatever was left to keep the backup alive longer instead of running out of whatever life support they had left keeping everyone alive.
Definitely a possible reason
Plus the blast wave would be too much turbulence, don't think a glide would work. That amount of force would just throw that thing like a rock.
Wholesome creator, thanks for the video!

I LOVE IT!!!!"
As regards the bomb detonation actually seen ingame, good job on the backtracking.
Btw, I do like that you used a greening mod for your game. That aspect of FO lore never made any sense to me - nature is incredibly resilient, and we only have to look at Chernobyl to understand what would eventually happen in time, with even severely contaminated areas.
I love videos like this. Subscribed
Excellent video
That guy who waved the contract was kinda stupid.
He was staring down the barrel of a 10mm pistol held by guards who had just shot up the place and killed the overseer and the other scientists. Those guards weren't interested in taking prisoners.
Nice explanation I learned a lot
Great stuff. Thank you.ILOVE THIS GAME!
You just hit the algorithm bro ! 😂😂🔥🔥
@@IrresoluteCartographer Also, both crash spots have power armor at them. Fitting the two seen at Vault 111 when the first bomb drops.
I wonder how much closer to scale the map is when considered in comparison to the movement of time.

You’re telling me the Vault Tec Representative survived that with his Brain Cognition intact? 😂
Sucks for the Sumners, the Donoghues, and those other 2 Families.
Love the video, man! 👍
Here's some food for a thought vault tech built not just vault 111 but sanctuary hills think about it look just how close it is to the vault
The vault would have most likely become inhabited by raiders, or depending if settlements are cannon settlers could have used it.
you’re welcome.
Killing all the survivng vault dwellers was a wierd writing choice. Plenty of viable dna wasted
Well what else do you expect from the institute. Them to have a brain let alone forsight.
I think vault 111 has the coolest entrance of all of them.
Definitely one of the more unique and cool looking ones.
I would like to find out what exactly happened in the vault while The sole survivor was frozen because I've read on terminals. In vault 111 that talk about some sort of uprising amongst the support staff and security forces.
Well, then this is the video for you
I've always assumed the reason The Institute only kept the player character alive in the vault was that all of the remaining resources could then be dedicated to you, instead of splitting it among several survivors... keeping the player alive and viable for longer.
This answer makes the most sense to me
Great vid
What about the brotherhood founded in Appalachia, You know..Taggerty's thunder at Fort Defiance, we know at least one survived
Initiate Vernon Dodge survived the Scorching because he was kidnapped, but what does that have to do with Vault 111?
W video that’s crazy that I got suggested now
My apologies but I’d like to remind you there is a third bird crashed in a lake. It has a set of power armor with it. Which may be your bird.
That one is just northeast of Lexington. It’s possible that it’s related, but it would take them closer to Boston and its impact sites, rather than toward safety.
I mean... really the PC was let out about 10 years later... it was just all the side quests...
I like to think Nordhagen is the Vault tec rep. Lol
I wish we could tie up that loose end, but I think his name would have been on the list if he was Nordhagen, haha
Indeed, this was simply talking about the missing member of the science team known as Nordhagen
I love new Fallout 4 videos!

it is 1:10 in the morning but i am too interested
“The game is 5 years old”
Me watching it 9 years later in 2024: “what?!”
Theres 2 different craters inside boston what makes judging where the bomb went off so hard.
The location of the blast in the intro section appears to be the creator of the crater of atom, just based on where it is in the horizon.
I thought the warhead landed in the Glowing Sea.
And to this day no one can explain why we hear a shell casing hit the floor after Kellogg fires his revolver (sarcasm)
Surprised you couldn’t design your own synth follower if you join the institute, just like the player character creation and their voice
That would be a pretty cool feature
@@IrresoluteCartographer Bethesda sign me up
Given the institute has power issues and they have patched into power sources above ground they probably cut the other pods so they would have more to draw on. Also just in case a generator failed only powering one pod would increase the odds of Nate/Nora surviving in case they needed them.
What happened to the soldiers in power armor in front of the vault?
I believe the course of events was this:
@@IrresoluteCartographer ok
