  • This video is about the Dell OptiPlex 9020. In the video I will completely disassemble the machine, and then re-assemble everything back together. While doing the re-assembly, I'll also upgrade the memory.
    After going through this, and if the PC still works offcourse, I'll run some basic benchmarks as well.
    If you're interested in getting Windows 11 on your unsupported PC, have a look at my other video covering that: • Windows 11 Dual Boot o...

    Excellent presentation, patient, thorough, and informative. Much appreciative, as I just acquired a refurbished 9020, and there is not much room for those PCI cards as that will be a tight fit. Thank you for sharing.

      Yes, with the SFF model that is the problem, one needs the mini-tower version / model of the 9020 to really get rocking. But the 9020 is a great PC . Early in the video you see the various models, and the one on the far right is preferred imo.

    @jensd_be thank you so much for making this video! Your presentation was not hurried, and everything was well explained to your audience as you completed the various steps. This video is worlds better than the manual and content that Dell provides for its own product! I have "Liked" this video, and also Subscribed to your channel. My 9020 SFF arrived from eBay today, and I will be using it for a pfSense firewall for my home lab. With an i7, 8 GB of memory, and a 1 TB HDD, it should fit the bill nicely. Thanks again "from across the pond".

    A useful video!👍👍 Recently, I found a similar PC., a Dell Optiplex 7010, it had been thrown out so I rescued it and after the usual cleaning and new thermal paste and fitting a new cmos battery, it's currently working well with Linux Mint Mate installed.
    The PC., had 16 gig of ddr3 ram., installed and a 256 gig ssd., and a third generation i7 CPU., which all work, but I fitted a 500 gig ssd., and because that plastic caddy can take two 2.5 inch drives I also fitted a 320 gig HD., for storage, which meant that I also had to fit another sata cable, but there was a spare sata port on the MB..
    Also thrown out was an ASUS 18.5 inch wide screen VGA., monitor and after a good clean it's also currently working well.

    That x1 slot looks more like a 4x slot and it has no rear plastic on it so you can put a full size card in that slot from what I can tell! Interesting that they have the x16 slot as the second slot instead of 1st. Kinda makes 2 slot GPUs harder to fit since they will be right up against the PSU housing. Could use the x4 slot though but will take a bandwidth penalty using that one assuming the board will even let you use a GPU in that slot.
    Surprising they decided to put 4 ram slots on the SFF version. From what I recall you can max them out to 32 GB of ram if you use 4x 8GB modules!
    Annoying that they started using a load baring heat sink mount for that one. Make case swaps a little tricky. Not to mention the rear IO faceplate appears to be part of the case and not removable. :(
    Not sure on the SFF versions but with the mini towers the 7010 and 9010 used standard PSU connector and had removable rear IO faceplates (the mobos also had proper brackets on the backside too though they are glued on so you have to use them when using after market cooloers). The downside is the SATA ports are near the GPU PCI-E slot so 2 slot cards will obstruct them. Right angle low profile sata cables would need to used in that case. Or a PCI-E SATA card if the mobo supports booting from one of those.

      There is a bracket with room for two 2,5" drives as far as I know. I don't think it is a standard option though. Physically there is space for another drive so if you are fine with it just "dangling" in there, that should work. You can connect it to one of the free SATA ports. For power, you might need a splitter to create an extra connector.

    I put an i7-4790 CPU in both my 9020SFFs, one is being used as a Home Theater PC - it has an SFF (low profile) 1050Ti video card for driving a 4K TV, the other 9020SFF is on a work bench for downloading and displaying schematics on a 23" monitor. The work bench PC also has a USB3 802.11ac/a/b/g/n WiFi dongle to access the internet - the 9020s did not come with WiFi or Bluetooth from the factory. Very hard to tell with this little information. Depending on the number of drives, check which model could fit it. Typically more than 4 will be very hard with a pre-built HP/Lenovo/Dell machine. If you want 2-4, then a tower is probably easier. For basic NAS operations (like file sharing etc.) any Intel Core with ~4GB of RAM should be enough. Faster CPU and more memory depending on other tasks you want to do on that NAS.

      @@jensdbe yeah looking for anything between 2 to 3. Anything will be an overkill. Yeah just doing basic file sharing mainly for photo storage really.

    Have you or anyone else had luck installing a xeon such as a e3 1240 v3 or 1245 v3[on board graphics]? Best i could do was an i5 4670k. I had no issues with the 3rd gen/xeon upgrades. I would buy pentium systems and add in the i7 non-k equivalent cpu.

    • @jensdbe
      @jensdbe  2 роки тому

      I read that some people did this successfully. Only take into consideration that such Xeon has a larger energy consumption so that might be too much for the board/PSU, especially if you are also using a dedicated GPU.

    • @jensdbe
      @jensdbe  6 місяців тому

      If it is only for HDMI, you can easily go from DisplayPort to HDMI with the right cable. But yeah a RX6400 is a good choice. Should perform near the same as a GTX 1650. Definitely need to look into that range of cards :)

      There are two in front, the right ones and two in the back: two bottom left ones. They have a different label with SS (SuperSpeed) instead of just the USB logo. Forgot to mention that in the video but you can see it in the footage around 01:02 and 01:19

    • @jensdbe
      @jensdbe  11 місяців тому

      I guess the SFF was a lot more popular in the typical target audience for these machines. The tower version often doesn't make a lot of sense in a business environment. There is no need for additional HDs or SSDs as everything is acessed over the network and thetebis no need for a GPU in the case. Even if there would be, the power supply typically can't handle a card that is not available in a low profile version anyway.
