Thanks man! EXACTLY what I was looking for!
I seriously appreciate your clarity, effort and creativity!
Give this man a medal, this video would have solved everyone's problem who have bought a twin slot gpu even though it's low profile and thought they stuffed up!! You should also compare the benchmark without the card inserted so you have the default values vs x4 vs x16
This just happened to me, I bought a 1050ti Low Profile for my 5040 and thought I fucked up big but the 8 to 10 fps less doesnt bother me. I'm an oldschool offline singleplayer. So I really dont care, if the game runs at 50 or 60 fps. I grwq up with an old mono crt, a fat lady ps2 and 720x576 at 25 fps and was happy with that.
I had to look away as you cut the back of that case 😬😁
You're doing the lord's work out here. Thanks for the info buddy.
@Landyn Bobby why would you do such a thing?

Thanks for sacrificing your case to do this testing, I’ve been running a 1050 in mine and always wondered what kind of difference the x16 slot would make
i appreciate your dedication!
Thanks big dog, video still helping 3 years later!

Thank you so much for this video. It really helped me out because I got a huge scare because I thought I couldn't fit it in my 7020 sff. Videos like this just provide solid reassurance and confirmation that it will work.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! What a stress reliever! Man, I didn’t think it would work in the shorter slot.
thank you for doing this benchmark test and mangling your case in the name of science!
thank you for the video. This is why I love youtube, an indepth video answering my exact question. cheers
Excellent video, proves the dell forums wrong at the very least, shows that you are definitely able to run the card through the x4 slot with no external power necessary
Keep it up mate
Thank God I found this video. I took a punt on a gfx card and I bought a refurb pc. All info online said that my card wasn't going to work, I can't put it into an x4 pcie slot, etc. Nuff idiots on Q&A forums throwing out disinformation. Well this video means I'm gonna get it all up and running tomorrow. I have an optiplex 5060 to play with so same case as the OP. As far as I can see as long as the x4 slot or any slot smaller than x16 has an 'open back' you can plug anything in there and it's fine overlapping.
Hey man! Awesome job with the case mod! Thanks a ton for doing this so others (me) don't have to 😆 I'm making a video on this topic as well and am going to use your video as a reference to the pcie x4 vs x16 slot performance so I just wanted to make sure I let you know. Ill also be linking your video and channel in my description so my community can check your full video out! Let me know if you have any issues with that!
thanks for the feedback and yeah that's fine if you want to mention or link to my video, cheers
@@MrWhitianga will do brother! Thank you!
How I got here, was even better surprise to follow RAVs link and find a fellow aussie PC tinkerer. Thank you both.
I love the dedication! I was running into the same thing with my 7020 SFF and Zotac 1650. My solution was to take everything out of the case and put it inside a Dell Optiplex 790 "DT" case. Any of those "DT" size cases will work. It not only let me use the x16 slot, but it lowered my temps from the SFF case. The only drawback was losing two usb 2.0 ports on the front. I purchased a different front port part that has the blue connector for the 2 usb 3.0. It matches the 7020(9020 too). The old DT had a black connector. Everything works great. Even the ssd I have in the fake optical drive tray fit. I am getting ready to move everything yet again to a Dell Precision T1700 case for full ATX power supply. The Precision has the same matching blue connector for front ports. Lets hope it all fits!
Hey great idea, we get old dell precisions turning up from time to time so will try it out if I get a chance, cheers
This comment you left here is a real diamond in the rough. I really appreciate it. Did you ever swap into another Dell case? I've been trying to research if the SFF motherboards will fit in the mini tower cases with no luck so far
Thank you so much for the video! I have the exact dell and just ordered my 1650 and i was wondering if it was gonna work. One question: Did you need an adaptor for the 4x slot? Or just insert the card and let part of it hang?
Thank you so much for the video, keep them coming, im subbed!
No adapter needed, pretty much plug and play, just make sure you've got the latest urgent drivers from dell for your 9020, cheers
Thanks so much for taking the time to explore this question. The LP GTX 1650 cards are insane in terms of price right now (actually just about any LP card is hard to get). I see below that think it would be a much better bang for the buck to invest in a GTX 1050i card. I agree that if you really want a gaming rig, this is not the system to invest in.
I love the small size of the SFF, only thing that sucks is now I feel like my 1650 isn't being used to its full potential
Thanks for the inspiration! I upgraded my old DELL 9020 by adding the same Geforce GTX card as in this video here and the result is fantastic. Two games that my kids are playing are Settlers 7 and Lego Undercover, well the experience after upgrade is "it's a new game" -feeling. From around 7-18 FPS using onboard intel GFX with low level of details and resolution in the game to 60+ FPS when highest detail levels activated. I am running the x4 PCI slot and feel that the 10% that can be added by moving to x16 PCI is not necessary at this point of time. There are "connectors" that can be used if you don't want to break the chassi when using x16 PCI slot... Please share your experience after upgrade. And yes, the original Power Supply Unit is supporting the new hardware setup well. That was my biggest concern when adding new hardware, since the power consumption of the graphic card is close to the max PSU capacity, will there be any power issues after some hours of playing? It works!
I guess as long you dont overclock the CPU with the Intel Booster feature it should be fine.
I've replaced the PSU with a 315w OEM one from Dell on my 7020 sff, worked great for almost a year and a half now, but I have decided it is now time to upgrade and utilize that extra 10% with a new case, motherboard, and PSU, even though I don't really need to.
So basically i can use a pcie x16 riser for the full load if i wanna use the full x16 slot and it works perfectly fine?
@@robinschepens6228 there are ribions that extend that 16x slot because using that 4x slot reduces performance by 10% and at that point just get the rx 1050 and put it in the 16x slot since is small and fits perfectly.
@@filmingstuff7085 there isnt a rx 1050
This is what I need to watch, Thank you so much for your effort!
Awesome information, thanks for doing the cutting and benchmarking. I have several of these 9020 sff. Been getting along with x4 but now I have aspirations. (where are my metal clippers...:-) )
thank you again.
You are a life saver, just upgraded my daughter's optiplex 7020 from a gt 710 to a gtx 1650, pretty much exactly the same case as ur vid, I didn't know I cud use the small pcie lane, she only has a 60hz monitor so the lost frames won't matter as she plays eSports, thank you
I have a 9020 optiplex running a 1030 and it’s been amazing. Haven’t owned a pc in my life so I didn’t want to break the bank so for 350, I’m playing a lot of games I never got to play and emulate. My optiplex was 1tb sssd, 32gb ram and an intel i7 4770 processor for 250. It definitely struggles with new game but I expected that. I may upgrade my
Gpu and get a used one when it’s not 250 dollars
The minimum fps score is great info, it means that the minimum performance is not impacted by x4 - only peak fps is - so in real world the x4 will be sweet - thanks so much
Thanks a lot!.
I had this doubt and now cleared.
Thank you. I thought I messed up but only seeing a 9% lost in performance, doesn't look too bad. But thanks for testing this!
Also is the X for slot the only option on the 7020 SFF? Obviously that’s true because the PCI x16 slot is so close to the power supply that the card won’t fit unless it is fit into the x4 Slot. But would a x16 adapter improve performance? Doesn’t seem like it but just wondering? And also would it be much of an improvement if I swapped out a GT 1030 Using X16 slot with this GTX 1650 on only a x4 slot?
You deserve more subscribers!
Thanks for the vid!! I used this as a guide to mangle my case to fit my own GTX 1650 inside. Ain’t pretty, but hey, I can game
Awesome!
Was there 10% improvement on FPS or was it more?
Any csgo data?
Wonder if when you put a gtx 1650 low profile gddr5 in a 9020 sff, with i7 4790, would it play halo infinite, modern warfare 2 and cyberpunk at 60+ fps?
Ah im using a dell optiplex 3020 SFF, so essentially a gpu can fit in the case if the PSU isnt blocking it so putting it outside the case would be fine right?
Thanks for this video, really helpful, aswell as your previous one - you stole your DIY skills from me I think, although I have a bigger hammer, so there!
So, I have the 7060 MT (mini tier) which is a slightly deeper pizza box than your SFF I believe. Would you recommend this (or better) gpu for it? Or would you suggest trying to transplant this into a bigger case with a better psu and better gpu ? Or should I hack the case to take a full size card, or even use a riser cable reposition the gpu somewhere (no idea where!) ?
It's an i7-8700 so it's quite a powerful cpu.
thx for any suggestions.
Oh , if you're in NZ, if you see Clive Umbers tell him he's a git!
Maaaate! I Love the dedication! 👍
So I was wondering because what I’ve been told is the black PCI x4 Can only supply 25 W of power. How come this card is working when it’s 75 watts?
I don't understand. How do you fit it into the short slot. Do you leave the 16 pins unplugged?
I'm late seeing your video, great info m8. I use the earlier Optiplex 7010 that has the x16 slot where you need it. With this mobo, you can run a XEON E3-1220 V2 processor which has the same if not better specs as an i5 but has a cheaper price on eBay usually. Obviously, the Xeon needs an added video card but a low-profile 1050ti or 1650 like you show works well. I have an i7 2600s in mine which out performs the Xeon with 16gb DDR 3, I`m an emulation freak so love retrogaming and modern gaming at 1080p. I love the idea of a half decent gaming rig in a business PC, like putting a porsche engine in a VW Beetle.
Does 1650 LP fit inside Optiplex 7010 ?
I Currently have Optiplex 7010 with 1050 TI LP and it fits perfectly and I would like to upgrade to 1650.
@@claudiuvatamaniuc3262 I hadxa 1050ti, i now run a 1650 low profile as its definitely the fastest card that fits. Its identical size. I have an MSI version but Zotac and Gigabyte fit also.
Hi does a 1050ti fit inside the dell optiplex 9020 i5 sff?
@@sizzla167 as i stated in my comment above, LOW PROFILE 1050ti or 1650 will fit. There are a few brands, MSI, ASUS, ZOTAC. Just the worst time to find one due to world wide chip shortage. Good luck!
Hi, as with everyone else here, I very much appreciate the time/effort you put into this.
It was on the back of your early video a few years ago that I bought the 9020 and a 1050Ti.
In your opinion, is it worth the upgrade to the 1650?
With the same setup (x4 slot) what FPS increase do you see with the 1650?
If it's only minor, my next adventure may be with a 3620.
Keep up the good work. You're my guiding light
Hey thanks for the kind words. And no I wouldn't recommend upgrading to the 1650, its not really worth it especially with the limited bandwidth on the generation 4 cpu. I think your best option is to keep using that setup and at some stage upgrade the pc and gpu. Hope that helps
Intereesting! Love this video!
When I plug it x4 slot, computer freezes on startup even when I plugged old gpu to x4 slot. it still freezes. I think my x4 slot is faulty. I took the power supply out of the case and managed to put the card on x16 slot. It works great. Now any good ideas to make sure dust don't go all over the case in the future since it won't close while power supply out of case?
Glad that I came to see this, I was planning on doing this with the GTX 1050 TI Low Profile.
Now this one is even Better, thank you!
Edit: Does the GPU fit in the 4 pin slot without removing the PSU?
I didn't even know it was possible to plug a graphic card on these little port. lol
Thank you for sharing this (and the benchmark of course)
If you touch the power supply will it shock you when it’s on or no since it’s in a metal case
Is it just dell cases with this problem or all OEM cases that are unable to utilize the x16 slot for the graphics card?
Sir is there no problem with on board PSU when inserting and using the the gtx1650GPU?
Did exactly the same with a Lenovo M93p SSF though I also updated the processor with an I7-4790 and 16GB od ram.
I love those SFF machines
I love you so much!! Thank you for this great video!
Your demo is very resourceful. Im wondering: is it possible to install RTX A2000 in PCIe x4 slot in my Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF i7-4770 32GB, after installing Win 11 64bit? I read that Win 11 will not work with i7-4770 on that mobo. Thank you. Well done.
nice video thanks - thats helped me a ton!
I love your video and what you have done for the Science
so would the 1630 gtx work in that black slot
Thank you that was greatly informative.
Very great video, guys this man deserves an oscar
I'm late to this video, but there's single slot full size 1650 options that instead of cutting the back of the case I trimmed out an almost exact fit of the card in the x16 slot on the side panel. Works great for this ff.
Don't they make extenders so you can extend Pcie to the other slot?
Thank you very much for your work I wanted to ask how are your 16GB of ram? I just ordered a 9020 SFF with 8GB of ram but it doesn't specify how the slots are used, it coud be 4 2GB sticks? I live in Venezuela and the computer + the gtx 1650 will be sent here but I want to upgrade the ram, what is the limit of each slot? I want to buy two 8GB sticks but I'm not sure if the mother board can handle it and also a if you still have the link for your memory sticks it would help me a lot

Love your work. I have the same setup and was wondering if anyone else sees the bios fan control failing to work on these properly after Standby/Resume? Only noticeable when running intensive gaming or high utilisation. The fans don't spin up to the same rpm as they do after a fresh boot. It's a weird one but I have seen across multiple Optiplex models...
After going through like 70 different models of office PC between Lenovo, Dell and HP.
The one that seems best to upgrade is HP elitedesks
G2 6th gen would be cheapest I’d consider upgrading but the G4 makes the most sense if you want a budget gaming PC
Hi, i have one question. Can i use the GTX 1650 Super (no low profile) with a dell optiplex 7050 SFF motherboard in a different case with a 750w Power supply?
How is the Dell holding up with the GPU running through the x4 slot?

Thanks for this. I can imagine the motherboard designers deliberately putting the x16 to close to the psu. Why on earth they were not switched.
Great video! I aprecciate the time you took to show us the benchmarks. I have an 9020 SFF but its an i7 4770; its safe to assume the 255W PSU will work just fine with a 1650? If yes, may I put an SSD too?
Yes it should work fine, I had an i7 in my 9020 and ssd and 2TB serial SATA hard drives running for ages, no problems

Hi, can you please suggest me which sound card will fit in Dell optiplex 7020 i7
JUST what i needed! - Ty!
hi thanks for you're video, so if i understand the black slot is a pcie 4.0 and the blue one is a pcie 3.0 so its better to put it in the pcie 4.0 ?
No, PCI 3.0/4.0 are versions which translates to higher transfer rate.
While the context here is X4 and x16 refering to number of PCIe channels or bandwidth.
The black slot is likely a PCIe version 2 or 3. For my 7020 it's a PCIe 3.0.
I got a dell optiplex 3040 sff. I would like to put a good graphic card. What would you recommend?
Did you modify the x4 slot because there is a block at the side
Thanks for doing the research!
I was about to buy a new pc just to get some gaming going on my optiplex 7th gen i7, so glad i did some google first and found this video instead of purchasing somthing i dont need
I just want to confirm that you didn't have to upgrade the power supply with the GTX 1650 graphics card and you had no issues with the computer shutting down?
I just bought a 9020 SFF on ebay for $59 and I was going to use it as a dedicated firewall running PFSense, but I also have an old 380 SFF that I had upgraded the CPU and added memory a few years back. and it runs arch linux very well. Both computers can run a GTX 1030, or I could install a Network Interface card to the PCI e slots in either machine, so now I am thinking of using the 380 as my firewall and adding a graphics card to the 9020. Seems like a waste of processor to use the better machine as a firewall when I only have about 5 computers on my network. The 1030 while not as good as the 1650 also performs well enough to run GTA V at greater than 50 fps on high settings which seems adequate. But nice of you to run this comparison, for me 8fps gain is not enough to justify cutting into the case for me anyway, but good info.
I am trying to find a video of this exactly comparing the AMD RX 6400 vs GTX 1650 LP/SFF
I got the same situation going on an Optiplex 7020 with the same looking motherboard with the one 4 slot and the one 16 slot. Just a question though if I do accept just running with the 4 slot PCIe you don't need to adjust the case using that 1650 low profile do you? did you only adjust the case so that you could use the 16?
Yes I only modified the case to test the GTX 1650 in the x16 slot. If you want to use the x16 slot another option is the low profile Radeon RX 6400, benchmarks similar to the 1650.
@@MrWhitianga I already have the 1650 low profile so I will probably just use the 4 slot and maybe one day if I decase my computer since it is going inside a Virtual Pinball table I could mount the powersupply outside and just make room for the 16 pin as you did.
Great video! Thank you!
Thank you for this video
The important point for me in this case is that the lows seem to be more or less stable.
I have a Dell 7040 and this machine still has this problem... I don't know whether or not Dell changed the configuration since 😄
Have you tried using it on a long gaming session with med-high graphics settings?
Yes, works just fine. The temperature of gfx card is around 80°C
How about the PSU?? Is the standard Dell PSU enough for such a card?
Tuco is seeming a lot more calmer these days ever since he got interested in computers
Computers are tight!
you should do a case swap and it will work well theirs plenty of small cases out their that will work great. and overall better airflow.
Hello, first of all thank you very much for the clarifying video and I'm sorry for my bad English. I am Brazilian, I have an Optiplex 9020 SFF like yours and I want to know which video card is more worth buying, GTX 1050TI or GTX1650? Considering that I will use the 4x PCI, the performance difference is very big?
Definitely buy the GTX1650, its newer and proven to be super stable. The 1050Ti is an old card now.
Nice video you encouraged me to move my 1650 on my 7020 on over to the 16xpci slot instead of 4xpci. Question on why you didn't just remove to low profile bracket on your card instead of chopping up the case ?
Hey good point, ya know that didn't even cross my mind. I'm going to review this card in a 7070 SFF soon. I was going to use a riser card but I'll try removing the bracket first, cheers.
He had to chop it. There dvi port would have been blocked by metal

Hey, Are you qble to over clock the graphics card when using the x4 slot??
I would recommend highly against doing so, the GPU is already pushing alot of power through the x4 slot, if anything undervolting/underclocking the GPU would be wise to keep temps in check + minimize the load over the PCIE slot.
