    In the late 80's breaking 10 was "good," but we heard about these legends running low 9's from the big cities. Then, one day, in the newspaper, someone broke 9 out West. Epic.

    • @JohnHoulgate
      @JohnHoulgate 2 місяці тому +16

      In 1973, we had Terry Williams and Jim Schenkel from Lompoc high school, Barry Williams from North Torrance, all running sub 9 in the 2-mile, regularly. In fact they ran sub 9 on the Sunkist indoor track that was 160 yards. In that same race, there was a Freshman from Laguna Beach High named Eric Hurst. He ran in the low 9s, but the next year he was running sub 9 on the regular. If you ran under 9:50 you could get your name printed in the LA Times, but if you were under 9, you got feature articles written about you.

      @@switch_kill_805yt4 The following Fall, I saw Jim Schenkel tear up a very challenging Palos Verdes course at the PV XC Invitational. I believe he ran 10:50 on a very hilly 2-mile course. No one else could break 11 minutes.

      @@JohnHoulgate California, amazing runners. I was near Philly, thought I was fast until the Penn Relays. Jamacians. I think the winning PA state time was low 9's. The interesting thing is the 4x800 relay times haven't got much faster since 88. I just checked, within one second. Nationally, however, I do think they are much faster. PA, not so much. 7:46 was our time, lost by less than a second. Yea, we got our names in the paper....but it was Sports Illustrated that had a nice little section on HS athletes that frequently showcased great runner.

    Back in '06 only 8 of us broke 9 at Arcadia and people were in shock. AJ Acosta, who won the race in 8:51.30, would have been 30th here today and I would have been 2nd to last lol. It's unreal (but awesome) to see how deep the US has become in the 3200m!

    Another thing to consider is that Arcadia has so many runners in each event that they run multiple races. The 3200m is a big draw so this was only 1 of 6 total races, albeit this was the fastest. Another race had 20 more runners under 9:00, a third had 11, and a 4th had 1, for a staggering total of 69 runners under 9:00 in the same meet. Insane! And the winner Daniel Simmons and Ben Jaster (5th) helped American Fork dominate in the 4 X 1600m relay.

    How is this possible. This is absolutely sick, unbelievable , incredible that high school kids can run this fast. I remember when I was in high school in Pennsylvania, this kid from Illinois named Craig Virgin ran an 8:40 2 mile and it made so much press, was written about in magazine, I believe in Sports Illustrated or Runners World I forget which, the author compared him to Secretariat in that incredible article. In my state of Pennsylvania the top 2-miler runners were running in the low 9 mins. But to see this where a great time of 9:07 almost gets you last place. Unbelievable. What am I looking at. The evolution of kids. I still run a lot 60 - 70 miles a week and even at my age I can run a 21 min 5k. I was in a 5 k road race last year and I got totally destroyed by a 9 year old, LMAO by like 3 minutes. 🤣😂. These kids nowadays are like bionic! I sure hope their talents transfer well someday to the international and world championship level. I'd love to see in my life time it said that the greatest distance runners in the world come from America not Kenya or Ethiopia . It could happen, even today the greatest middle distance runner in the world is from Norway not Kenya, Ethiopia of North Africa 😊

    It's a miracle that none of them fell. I think they should run the full two miles. 1600m and 3200m are lame distances. Just make it a mile and two-mile. One reason for the 16/32 is just pure laziness. The powers that be in track are too lazy to measure out the extra 9/18 meters back from the regular start/finish line, and then have that be the starting line for the full mile and two-mile. Arcadia actually does that for the mile, so why can't they do it for the deuce?
    As for the runners, Daniel Simmons has excellent running form, with no wasted motion. The Utah guys get that extra benefit of training at altitude, as does the Montana runner-up. Simmons is more talented than any of those guys, and I think will have an excellent future.
