The fact that Baratza as a company has made longevity and repairability into the cornerstone of their business model makes me so happy. To get that from any company these days is rare, but even more so from a company known in the industry for making lower-end (I speak relatively here of course), affordable products. It's refreshing and I'm sure has earned them a lot of loyalty over the years. I know it has from me.
Yo Lance. I remember competing against you at our Latte art comp when you visited our little shop in Columbus, Indiana. I’ve been seriously enjoying your videos more and more, and watching you has been inspiring for my little barista self to learn more and more. Also, seriously love the more budget friendly options coming out! 👏🏻
Chris Baca did a repair video on the OG Encore a couple of years ago, and IIRC he heard from Baratza that they made that burr holder in plastic so it breaks easily when a stone gets in there, in order to save the burrs. Makes sense, as almost every spare part of Baratza is available for home-repair, that's a big part of their company policy as you also pointed out in the video.
My OG encore had a sudden drop in grind quality. Looked up some videos and while I had it apart to fix it I was able to upgrade my burr to the new one. Pretty awesome how supportive they are and how they make it possible to only fix but to upgrade their machines.
Lance, I have to say that I was always super impressed with your knowledge but now, with the new set-up in Portugal, I'm crazy about every one of your films. Production is top notch, it looks great, sounds great and most of all, you seem to be very happy with what you're doing and it makes it even better for me as a fan. Keep it up!

I've been making espresso out of an Encore for years now despite internet haters saying it can't be done. It's a fantastic machine for the money, and I'm glad they finally got a version that's designed with Espresso in mind. It's not a perfect machine by any means, but it's an excellent machine for most people. Baratza is also an awesome company, and you won't get better support for the money. Also big-up lance for the grind-button remix, I'm glad someone has found a use for that thing.
I was using my baratza encore somewhat successfully for espresso for a few months, I found the biggest drawbacks for espresso for me were that sometimes I would need to be in between clicks and that I couldn't get fine enough for some beans ( i think this one could be fixed with some modding) this new encore fixes those two issues. The Issue that was a dealbreaker for me was that it had too much retention for me with espresso grind and that made switching between pourover and espresso really unpleasant. I think that is still going to be an issue with this if someone is hoping for a grinder to do both it will only work if you are happy cleaning out your machine every time you want pourover after making espresso.
@@ebbbrock You can modify the grinder and remove the piece that clicks to make the Encore have stepless adjustment. If you're going back and fourth between Espresso and Pourover though you might just want to get a new grinder for Espresso and use the Encore for drip.

The adjustment ring is a really great design. Not to mention the baratza customer service. Have repaired a number of broken baratza after years of good service.
I love and am highly excited for the entry level category as it opens the world to potentially more people to appreciate the world of coffee for a higher price to performance ratio than ever before.

The part number is different on Baratzas parts manuals, but I think it may just be an unthreaded Virtuoso burr. It is listed as an M2 burr on the parts list

@@LanceHedrick LMAO…no worries. Quick insight please? What’s the difference between this and the original encore upgraded with the M2 burr and calibrated to grind finer (that you can do by taking the cover off and changing a screw position on the burr collar). Also, there are a few really good single-dose bellows out there for the Encore. Thanks.
Good review. The original Encore was NOT recommended for espresso so that capability with the new model is a big deal. Baratza really bends over backwards to support their product. A friend gave me a broken encore with a bad control board so I called Baratza in Seattle and they sent me a new one no charge, no questions asked! Don’t know how anyone feels about mega appliance company Breville but they recently purchased Baratza and I don’t know how long they will continue with their generous free parts and service. I just watched your Fellow Opus vid and was almost convinced that was what I was going to buy until I saw this Baratza review and I've completely u-turned due to my espresso needs and how neat that dial is. Such great content, thanks Lance.
Thank you so much for doing these reviews! Just recently got an espresso machine after only filter coffee for years and I've been having a hard time finding an electric grinder that does both reasonably well. Between this and the Fellow, it feels like the Baratza is a better choice as I explore espresso more. Super excited for when I can purchase this and no longer have to hand grind. Great review (and great beatboxing) as always!
That a felt washer. Same on Breville barista express built in grinder. Very easy to brake. Somebody told me it’s more for vibrations. I have replace it with rubber washer and works perfect.

In USA maybe. In the EU I am having trouble find a freaking burr ring for a year now ($8 in the US) and I can't buy it unless I pay through the nose for shipping ($120 CAD in one instance). My next burr will definitely not be a Baratza. Their support outside of USA sucks big time.
I got my first grinder last year- a second-hand Baratza Virtuoso Plus, it feels like the original "Encore but better" based on my experience of the V+ and what people say about the Encore and Encore ESP. I didn't realise just how similar the Encore ESP was to the V+ though, the internals are instantly recognisable, even down to the red tab to help you seat the collar burr. I've loved the filter coffee out of the V+ and I'm really getting the hang of espresso with it now and the shots are coming out better and better all the time. It makes me want to stay in Baratza's ecosystem moving forward. Thinking of getting a Vario+ at some point in the future, when I have the budget for it.

@@LanceHedrick Forgive me if I missed it in the video, but how would you put this against the SD40? I’m currently using the SD40 for espresso and the original Encore for filter, but I’d love to get down to one machine. Is this a good replacement for those two?
I think it can hold its weight against sd40. I think you might lose a little bit with it, but that's arguable! negligible. I'd recommend selling the two and downsizing, if that is what you'd want to do
@@LanceHedrick as an Encore owner, this makes me wonder if I should upgrade my upgraded M2 burr to this new ESP burr for better filter coffee. I am also wondering if I could or should buy the parts off Baratza’s website to upgrade my encore into an encore ESP and what parts I would need to buy to do that.
If it launches with a few more color options, it will blow Fellow out of the water. It looks simple enough to appeal to the beginner market who are worried about having coffee takeover their kitchen.
Pre-ordered an Encore ESP about two months ago while it was out of stock and it’s just shipped today. Very excited to spare my carpal tunnel riddled wrists from hand grinding!
Awesome in depth review. I always liked the plastic around the burrs because the tabs would break if a rock or hard object went into your grinder. It was an easy part to replace and cheap.
I modified my Encore with the M2 burr and the Preciso adjustment ring. Ignoring the plastic and the lack of a timer switch, it’s fungible with the Preciso. I haven’t used the new Encore ESP, but I feel like making the official version of my modded Encore would have been better for home espresso. This looks like the “double pin” mod people have been doing for a while. The stepless Preciso slider never left me wanting for more adjustment. That said, all the creature comforts they added look great.
I feel bad about my comment about the audio hitting so hard you actually mentioned it this video. Just wanted to say massive improvement in the more recent videos, sorry for being harsh
I still have a Baratza Preciso that I bought years and years ago. I use it at work for my Aeropress. Never have investigated the Beat-box capabilities like you do!
Just for how easy it is to adjust the dial / grind size on the Baratza, it wins my heart over every single grinders on this earth. Props to Baratza for such a good design. My Eureka Mignon's dial is driving me bonkers. Awesome vid as usual Lance 👌
Fantastic review and comparison. Love the explanation of the burr gap and threads. Baratza killed it with the grind adjustment mechanism. Does Baratza have a bellow for their single dosing hopper?
Hello Lance. The white felt gasket that you broke is meant to prevent coffee fines from entering the gears below. This grinders have a small motor and need some gears to generate more torque and lower the rpms. I used to repair alot of Saeco and Jura superautomatic machines and they all have it. Try to get a new gasket. Hello from Mexico city
Thank you so much, Lance, I was waiting for your review because I was looking to buy this or the Opus. I didn't like Opus and his adjustment system, and the adjustment system on the Encore is just clever! I know I will enjoy great cups on my Flair Pro 2 with the Encore :)
For anyone wondering. Baratza esp is quieter than my modded delonghi kg79. It's clumpy. (But I don't spray bean with water to avoid corrosion) It's kinda fast. BUT, IT TASTES GREAT. Easy to dial in. Has small footprint. It's pretty. Enjoy.
Cool video. I'm trying to upgrade from a hand grinder to my first electric grinder. Like everyone else, I'm trying to decide between this one (the ESP), the Breville SGP, and the Fellow Opus. I've pretty much ruled out the Opus- I'm not too interested in the internal micro-adjustments. The up-to 3 years of warranty is very tempting, though. The Breville SGP is tried-and-true. The bells and whistles look cool. But I'm more interested in final quality in the cup versus if my grinder has a timer on it or not. I'm leaning towards the ESP. The ease of use is appealing as is its emphasis on espresso-first use. The M2 burrs look nice. The overall design is a complete turn-off, but like I said - I'm more interested in the final product. I am currently shopping around for a coupon code or discount code to see if I can get a few percent off somewhere. My local coffee roaster sells the plain Encore - I need to ask if they plan on selling the ESP variant.
I'm in the exact same boat (was looking at those same 3) and I think I've settled on the ESP. Seattle Coffee Gear and Whole Latte Love both have 10% off coupons if you subscribe to their mailing list. Free shipping, too.
This is great news! I currently own the regular Baratza Encore and I found I drink lattes 95% of the time, so I think I'll have to pick this one up and sell my old one.
As these dual purpose electric grinders come down in price, it'd be interesting to compare to some of the high quality dual purpose hand grinders. Example Encore ESP vs 1zpresso K-Max. Or Fellow Opus vs X-Pro or something. Oh and off-topic, but why did you start referring them as one-zpresso in your last couple of videos instead of EZ-presso? Are viewers getting confused when it's not spelled out for them?
Top budget picks for a espresso capable grinder remain: - Conical: Turin SD40 ($219) - Flat: Eureka Mignon Filtro ($209) with the 50mm espresso burrs ($30); (total $239). Not sure there is any reason to pick the Fellow or the Baratza over the above.
i like what you said about the white one - and the overwhelm. because sometimes you just need something more simple to get where you need to go. once you are more advanced and feel the limits- you can upgrade. some of these high end grinders are like a sports car or F1 and you are still a new driver trying to get a handle on things. it's excessive and also not great for the phase you're at.
A question from a coffee novice: I have an inexpensive espresso machine and for 10 years have had a Dualit Burr grinder, having been told I needed a Burr grinder. I do not have a refined coffee palate but I prefer espresso to other types. I have the grinder permanently set on the finest grind. If I bought a Baratza Encore ESP, would I notice the flavor differences offered by the different espresso grinds?
Would you recommend this for someone doing 50/50 espresso/drip? Or would I be better going up to $400 for the Varia VS3, DF64, Sette 270 or some Eureka?
Make sure to hit that like and subscribe! The trolls have come out hard and early on this one with dislikes. what are your thoughts on the revamping of this classic?
I have 1Zpresso Jx-pro but want to switch to an electric grinder to reduce manual work. Is encore esp better than jx-pro for espresso? Or is sk40 or sette 30 better?
Hello. I just bought recently this Baratza encore ESP machine, but I have not gotten yet the good espresso I wished. I bought Bustelo supreme whole beans, and I am using grinder #15-18. I haven’t gotten yet that creamy espresso. I would like to ask you how many grams are needed for a shot of 2 espressos in a de’longhi dedica maestro plus machine? And also, what grinder number do you recommend to get a creamy espresso? Thank you for your time and your excellent video
The amazing thing to me is that they can do all the extra work on this versus the traditional for 20%. Between the machining for the variable pitch rate, the metal adjustment collar, and the m2 bur that's a lot of extra stuff to be done for $40. Realistically only a company doing huge volume could do all that work for that little extra retail revenue.
As someone who upgraded their burrs on the original Encore, I can't tell you how happy it makes me that you don't have to take the whole machine apart to take the cone burr out anymore.

thank you for the enthusiasm!
@@LanceHedrick you’re instant click material
thank you so much!
Thats a good point! Kind of an easy fail safe mechanism
Yep I’ve had this happen, super easy replacement and back in business.
Uni Student here, I love watching content from Lance about grinders even though I only have a handgrinder, no espresso machine, nor grinder :^)
handgrinder rocks! Thank you for watching and supporting regardless, friend!
I also modified my Encore with the M2 burr and Preciso adjustment ring
I feel bad about my comment about the audio hitting so hard you actually mentioned it this video.
Just wanted to say massive improvement in the more recent videos, sorry for being harsh
I still have a Baratza Preciso that I bought years and years ago. I use it at work for my Aeropress. Never have investigated the Beat-box capabilities like you do!
You should try the purge button! It is wild what it allows
The Encore MPC has a MIDI input and you can sync it to an SP12 and Serrato Studio
Man god damnit, he's so much fun. Had to pause the vid to come and like because of the beatboxing
Love the explanation of the burr thread tech. Makes total sense...very cleaver
3:55 hahahaa loved this impromptu dance session.
Just for how easy it is to adjust the dial / grind size on the Baratza, it wins my heart over every single grinders on this earth. Props to Baratza for such a good design. My Eureka Mignon's dial is driving me bonkers. Awesome vid as usual Lance 👌
Point worth mentioning. Lots of 3D printed mods for baratza
super good point. pissed I forgot tbh
Fantastic review and comparison. Love the explanation of the burr gap and threads. Baratza killed it with the grind adjustment mechanism. Does Baratza have a bellow for their single dosing hopper?
hey! Thank you so much! I appreciate your support. And they do not sell bellows, though there are many aftermarket bellows you can get!
Etsy is your friend 💚
haha so true!
@@LanceHedrick doesn't the cover of the Baratza single dose hopper push air, removing much of the need for bellows?
Little bit of Ben Folds 5 with my coffe talk?! YES PLEASE!
More to come I'm sure. In a kick again
I’m looking at either the Encore or the Turin SD40… does the Turin make a better Espresso shot in your opinion?
Great content with even better delivery! Incredible talent!
Grinders aside - your beatboxing alone deserves a like.
That stache is killer. Also feel like the opus is a let down and the Baratza is a pleasant surprise
Thank you! And agreed tbh
I really appreciate your level of information… just subscribed ❤
Thank you so much, Lance, I was waiting for your review because I was looking to buy this or the Opus. I didn't like Opus and his adjustment system, and the adjustment system on the Encore is just clever! I know I will enjoy great cups on my Flair Pro 2 with the Encore :)
🎉 that percussion groove was tight! My 8 year old Capresso Infinity grinder needs replacin’…seems like a great option
It's a fantastic one. And backed by their support- it's a no Brainer at the price point
For anyone wondering.
Baratza esp is quieter than my modded delonghi kg79.
It's clumpy. (But I don't spray bean with water to avoid corrosion)
It's kinda fast.
BUT, IT TASTES GREAT.
Easy to dial in.
Has small footprint.
It's pretty.
Enjoy.
That dialing system should run for president!
seriously! such a good idea for limited real estate and numbers!
This might be the one! Thanks Lance
ayo that beatboxing tho you're nasty with it
This is great news! I currently own the regular Baratza Encore and I found I drink lattes 95% of the time, so I think I'll have to pick this one up and sell my old one.
“Oouu that spoon is hot 😉” LOL I don’t know why that cracked me up. Love the video. Thank you Lance
Top budget picks for a espresso capable grinder remain:
- Conical: Turin SD40 ($219)
- Flat: Eureka Mignon Filtro ($209) with the 50mm espresso burrs ($30); (total $239).
I clicked the beatboxing bit, best get an agent as your MC career is about to blow up!

Wow you're on fire lately :-)
crazy releases as of late!!!
Love your videos. Beatbox was 🤣 How would the Breville smart Pro Stand against these two ?
A question from a coffee novice: I have an inexpensive espresso machine and for 10 years have had a Dualit Burr grinder, having been told I needed a Burr grinder. I do not have a refined coffee palate but I prefer espresso to other types. I have the grinder permanently set on the finest grind. If I bought a Baratza Encore ESP, would I notice the flavor differences offered by the different espresso grinds?
Chicky chicky boom boom! Yay updates since the last esp vid! I was about to mod my Encore, but this will save me some time
Heck yeah! Thanks for the support! And you'll love it.
Would you recommend this for someone doing 50/50 espresso/drip? Or would I be better going up to $400 for the Varia VS3, DF64, Sette 270 or some Eureka?
For reducing retention with the single dose hopper, it isn't quite the same but bouncing the lid up and down does work a bit like a bellows
Good idea! I'll have to use that trick
Really clever way of doing the adjustment steps. Might tempt me away from my 1zpresso.
agreed! but... 1zpresso is so good. Don't feel the need for upgradeitis!
Make sure to hit that like and subscribe! The trolls have come out hard and early on this one with dislikes.
what are your thoughts on the revamping of this classic?
I’ve been waiting months for this. I don’t know when is going to be available in Chile though
I hope sooner than later!
I really can decide maybe get the Ode Brew Grinder Gen 2 and a espresso hand grinder?
I've been waiting for this one
I hope it doesn't disappoint!!!
Hey Lance, what is your take on the DF54 grinder? Have you tried it? If so, do you think the Encore ESP is better?
The amazing thing to me is that they can do all the extra work on this versus the traditional for 20%. Between the machining for the variable pitch rate, the metal adjustment collar, and the m2 bur that's a lot of extra stuff to be done for $40. Realistically only a company doing huge volume could do all that work for that little extra retail revenue.
absolutely. The Encore is such an iconic product. I have to imagine they move mountains of encores
That button that automatically gives the user the ability to beatbox has me sold
as it should. If only I made money on each one sold! lol
