I love the way you explain everything on all your videos. You keep it simple. I’m just a dad trying to maintain. Not a body builder. I have a busy career plus being a dad. Your instructional videos really do help in injury prevention.
Hey Juan, I really appreciate these words man. I really love this platform but I'm a coach and I never want to post videos that don't include that part of what I do. A lot of times I'm wondering whether or not the tips are coming across so thank you man!
I just read this comment again and I just want you to know that I lost my way a little bit by shifting this channel to much towards the review channel side. I'm bringing live streams and instructional videos back to my channel. I miss it.
You're welcome GCM! I'm glad you liked the review! I'm going to shoot a full review on the PowerBlocks this week because I'm out of town and have been using some for 2 weeks. So maybe you'll find that helpful too. Thanks for watching my video man I appreciate it!
Thank you for this review. Direct explanation and useful comparisons to other products. Been thinking about these for a few days and placed my order on Amazon last night after watching your review. Much appreciated.
Hey thanks for the detailed review. You covered all the essentials. Loved your term 'ultra annoying' for when the mechanism locks up. I can see that being a pain.
I just got a used pair last week, and then your video review showed up. Awesome honest review and great video segments. Impressed you can do renegade rows with these.
Thanks Terry! I'm glad you liked it. I have some new dumbbell videos coming out over the next few weeks. I hope you subscribed I need all the feedback I can get. Thanks for watching this one though!
Thanks Steve! I just kept it real and I'm glad because people seem to be finding it helpful. I appreciate you taking the time to let me know what you thought too! Thanks again!
Really? Thank you for this comment. I just did another video similar to this and was debating on whether or not to add the increments and it's nice to know that it's helpful. Thanks for watching!!!
Thanks for the review. That locking up thing and smooth action in and out of the platform was what I was worried would annoy me, not to mention the width of the dumbbell.
Hi Vern, at 8:53 you refer to your dials getting stuck. There are a few potential causes beyond anything Bowflex attempts to explain in the video to which you referred. Here are a few troubleshooting questions: Is the handle fully seated in the base? Even as little a millimeter up off the base on one end will cause issues with the dials turning. Are the dials set precisely to a weight setting on both sides? If they are rotated even as little as an 1/8th inch too much to one side or the other, the dumbbell (by design) may lock itself into the base. Always make sure your dials are dead-set on the numbers. Is there any debris in the base under one of the plates? A tiny stone or other debris under a plate in the base will interfere with turning your dials. One other thing...I know that you mentioned that you've owned these for years. They're definitely not made for the forces applied during Renegade Rows or Devil's Press or any other body weight exercises. You've been lucky not to experience component failures (assuming you have not made any repairs to these already). Bodyweight exercises apply hundreds of pounds of force on the edge of the plastic weight plate coverings, as well as the plastic discs and the rivets and tabs on the plates. If you want to see just one of the many issues this can cause over time, check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/7g99OA4hdFI/v-deo.html To maximize the life of your dumbbells, I strongly recommend against using SelectTechs for bodyweight exercises or goblet squats. Stay safe, rock on man.
Thanks for checking it out and the feedback Joe! Yep, everything you mentioned are cons that annoy me about those Dumbbells. I could have went into more detail in this video but I just felt like the fact that they get stuck is a common problem and people coming here should just know it and how to fix it. Hopefully most people who own a set will check it out Bowflex's video too. I've seen videos where people have had their 552's break while doing way less then what we do over here but we're using our gear to the Max over here man! Like I said I don't baby sit em but if they break now they will have served their purpose. Thanks for checking in Joe! I really appreciate the thoughtfulness of the comment.

Great video! I asked my wife for these today as a birthday gift (12/31). I noticed in Dick’s that I couldn’t take them off base but I thought they were locked for safety..hmmm interesting... very informative and helped me solidify decision to get them! I loved the way you asked for “Fonzerellis” at the end! Best way I’ve heard the request! I like your shirt; Psalm 119. I am looking forward to these helping me to not miss a workout day because I can’t get to the gym. They will supplement a 20 lb slam ball, battle rope, Marcy gym 990, ez-barbell (not Olympic size) and a hodgepodge of other weights. My son is 17 and I look forward to how fast he will progress vs me at 43 and my daughter is 14 so these will help her start with lighter weights. Let’s get done!
I love this comment on so many levels David! First Happy Birthday brother that's a cool one! And Congrats on the Dumbbells I think they are phenomenal and you really can't go wrong with a pair especially since you have so may people of varying levels in your home. You've got a ton of stuff there man. You all should be able to get at it in a big way. Glad to see a few of us still remember the Fonze. I'm 52 so all of my pictures as a little guy are with my thumbs up. :-) And last but first... God is good and I'm happy to know him.
I bought one a few months ago on your recommendation and I put it to use everyday. Will buy a second but there’s something to be said about one at a time.
Just got a used pair for $150 with the stand! I passed up the 90 lb. model priced similarly because I like the smaller increments. I felt that I made a mistake after watching some reviews about the issues as they age but it’s working for now.
That's real talk! I know exactly what you're talking about. I have rubber Olympic Plates and one think I hate is that they don't omit that sound that two 45lb plates have when they are loaded on the bar. 🤣
Awesome review! I am just about to order some so this came in real handy to know what I am getting into. Do you think the stand with media rack would be worthwhile since you can attach the dumbbell base to the stand and that would prevent the base from getting stuck on the dumbbell like you showed. Not sure if you have reviewed benches, but I am in the market for one of those too, so contemplating the Bowflex 5.1S. Right now they have a bundle for sale including the 552's with the stand and bench for $799. Wondering if you think it's worth it. Thanks!
Hey Tom, I replied to your other comment but I realize that you were asking about a different bench so sorry about some of that reply. As far as that deal goes you're definitely saving some dough for that set but I would probably go with a set of PowerBlock adjustable dumbbells over the Bowflex if I were currently in the market and had to pick between the two. I really like the 552's but I had to use some PowerBlocks for the last 3 weeks while I was on vacation and they seem indestructible and don't have the mechanical issues that my Bowflex have. I can't really comment on that bench and stand except to say they look really nice! Thanks for taking the time to check out my videos and let me know if you want me to shoot some video of my client on my bench. Peace.
Great Vid, Vern - I’m in the market and this gave me a lot to think about. I’ve got two growing boys who I think will benefit from the ability to step up by 2.5 pounds at a time without putting their Pops on the street 😅.

Nice review, great explanation. If it's alright, can I ask you for some advise? I'm 5'7", around 148 lbs. My current goal is body recomp and I will eventually focus on building more muscle but not really become overly big. Target weight is maybe around 160-170lbs. I don't have a nearby gym so I'm getting adjustable dumbbells. For my goals, will the 552s be enough for me or should I go for the 1090s instead? I don't know if the best choice is to get the 552s, then eventually just buy the 1090s if I outgrow them (not sure if I will), or just buy the 1090s ones now. I'm just not sure if I will be able to maximize the use of it considering it's double the price.
@@mikeilagan6487 Hey you might want to check it Dick's they have an incredible deal right now on a set of adjustable dumbbells for $199. NordicTrack 55 lbs. Adjustable Dumbbells - Pair
So I believe that you'll definitely out grow the 552's at some point for some exercises but I also believe that 52.5 pounds is enough weight to build an incredible body. Your repetitions are going to end up being pretty high later but if you get a strong set of bands to go along with the Bowflex you'll be able to build the body you're looking for. To build it quickest you'll need the heavier weights. I'd consider those Nordictrack Adjustable Dumbbells for $199 because that's a great price and you can sell em later and upgrade later.
Average Joe UA-cam channel has metal replacements for the plastic disc's that hold the weight plates. Have had my set for maybe 4 months holding up good. Got them for around 150 each I think new.
If I may add on. If you sweat a lot at the gym including your hands, you will notice that the dumbbells do slip and slide while preforming some workouts. This is due to it having a rubber handle rather then a metal. I could just be a sweaty person 😂 but it’s something to keep in mind. I would still recommend tho, they get the job done 👌
