    Awesome review! After doing all the math and research, I purchased the Powerblock U-90 in 2011. Cost $727 but I'm glad I put in the investment then. Still considerably less that purchasing two dumbbells at each weight increment. The stand was around $100 and I use them about 4 times a week and they look brand new. The urethane coating is super nice and reduces noise and will prevent any rusting. I have nothing against Bowflex, but the size and hearing that the selectors broke easily steered me to what I have been using for 9 years.

    I bought the Bowflex 552's, and I love them. I was considering the Powerblocks, but they were about the same price, and the Powerblock just seemed a little odd and unnatural to use them. It was expensive, but it is easy to use and replaces a whole rack. But if you don't have the budget, Dicks Sporting Goods and many other places sell dumbbell handles in either standard or Olympic size, that you just add weight plates to it, kind of like a mini barbell. They are much cheaper, around $20-$30 a handle, and are worth it if you already have plates.

    Bowflex is coated steel. Which is similar to most expensive plates you would find in a commercial gym. The weight is also mounted to a central and balanced point which is why traditional dumbbells are constructed in this form. I would argue looking at the powerblock that the balance is inconsistent.

    I've only tried the Powerblock a few times when the local gym had a set, and I never was able to get used to having my hand inside the weights. I felt that it banged my forearm a lot and during curls the weight rattled a bit which was very distracting. I also felt like the mechanism jammed up occasionally, but again these were publicly used Powerblocks and I imagine they were not well cared for. I did see a sample set of the Bowflex at Dick's Sporting goods and I thought the mechanics worked really well, but with the amount of plastic involved I did have concerns they would wear out faster. I ultimately bought adjustable IronMaster dumbbells. They are very solid, which I like, but if I were to go back and do it again I would buy something else. Liek the adjustable dumbbells mentioned in this video, the Ironmaster dumbells are quite expensive, especially considering their relatively simple construction. The empty weights plus the screws themselves are supposedly 10 lbs and the default weights you get when you buy a set are only 5 lbs each; I had to buy some 2.5 lb plates separately and will probably need to buy some 22.5 lbs plates for convenience. Right now, to add/remove between 20 lbs and 45 lbs, I need to move 6 plates on each dumbbell. The plates are square and nest into each other, so I often pinch my fingers during in the process. This takes probably 30-45 secs to do both dumbbells if I work quickly. At their lowest weight, the screws on the IM dumbbells actually don't seem to grab the threads very well. I've had them almost come out on me several times while doing shoulder raises with 15 lbs. At 20 lbs I had zero problems though...probably because the 5 lb weights are thicker than the 2.5 lb plates and apply sufficient back-force on the threads when the screws are tightened to hold everything in place.

    I like the PowerBlock theoretically speaking because it's metal, seems more flexible and compact. However, it also seems very convoluted and awkward compared to the more standardized shape and mechanism of the Bowflex system. I would say PowerBlock wins hands down if it were only HEX shaped instead of shaped like a frigging loaf of bread. It just looks totally awkward, and that square shape is probably a hazard if you do actually need to drop the thing. A hex shape would be much easier to deal with I think. That goes for both systems actually.

      The powerblock may look complicated, but it's actually extremely simple and intuitive when you try it in person. I could not for the life of me tell how it worked through videos, but in person, they are so cool. It's just like changing weights for a Lat pull down machine - just move the pin up or down to change the weight. And the fact that it's square actually makes them easier to put back in place-and hold together every firmly as if one solid block. Even better is that the ends of the powerblock are flat so you can rest them on your legs in between shoulder Press reps.

  • @vito1785
    @vito1785 4 роки тому +2

    I've owned both and the powerblocks are better. With that said, the bowflex stopped working properly after about 2 years, and then purchased the powerblocks. I sold those after a year and simply bought a dumbbell set. I recommend the set if you don't plan to go past the stage 1 50lbs. When you start going into 70 and 90lbs range, then space starts becoming a major issue with dumbbells. The powerblocks are better built then the bowflex, but bowflex are easier and more convenient in making small weight changes. Removing the adder weights to go up 2.5 or 5lbs gets annoying really fast. Going up at 10lbs intervals is a lot for some people, especially people who have just started working out. I had the powerblock EXP Stage 1 with the stand for about a year, and sold them and just purchased dumbbell set (5-45lbs in 5lbs increments) with a vertical stand, and size difference is an inch or 2 in width.

    • @dkmchui
      @dkmchui 2 роки тому

      The exact same reason why i got the non exp version 10-50 lb for the 5 lbs increment without the adder weight. Anything past 50 lbs i use barbell. The 50-70 and 70-90 expansion set don't make much sense in terms of their size.

    A few comments and corrections for you, Shred, if I may. I've owned several PB models over the years and the entire lineup of SelectTech (552 S2, S2, 1090 and 560). Unless PB changed recently, the inner ribbed squares (upon which the pins rest) are plastic, so it isn't an all-steel product. The SelectTech weights aren't heavy duty plastic. They're plastic encased stacks of thin steel plates that have been riveted together and enclosed in the plastic. Plastic alone wouldn't have the density required to pack 52.5 lbs into that form factor.
    I understand your comment about the base of the 552, but it isn't functionally different from having to return to the weight stack of the PB to change the weight settings. Both products--and, in fact, all adjustable dumbbell products--require you to return to the weight stack to adjust the weight. Bowflex and other brands simply added a base.
    FWIW, later this summer I plan to begin experimenting with all-steel weight upgrades for the 552 and 1090 to bump the 552 to 90lbs and the 1090 to 120lbs. Not sure if I will succeed, but it should be an interesting challenge. I'll post some of that journey on YT.
    If you haven't checked them out yet, look at sets of Core and NUO dumbbells too. Design-wise both are closer to what you might expect from a traditional dumbbell and the weight selection mechanisms are excellent (though potentially delicate).

    I’m going to start lifting next month and I’ve decided on the Powerblocks. Only choice left is whether to go ahead and pay for the two expansions for 90 Lb, or start small and buy the exp piecemeal, as needed. How long do you think it’d take a new lifter to utilize 70 or 90 pounds? My thinking is pretty quickly for leg work, if regularly working out with high intensity- but I may be wrong and over estimating what I’ll need. ..I’m 44 and mostly only row with my concept 2 currently.

Consequently, it is possible to crack the outer plastic casing and expose the steel plates underneath.

    Looks like they both got their advantages and disadvantages. I didn't like the bars around your forearms when lifting with Powerblocks, they will rub up against your forearms during certain lifts. they still have to be in their base to make changes and you better have that pin in the right place, definitely takes longer to change weights. Bowflex a much faster weight change with the dial set up, you are gonna rack them anyway so no problem with they have to be in the rack to change weights. The size of the Bowflex dumbbells don't bother me, they are very comparable to regular dumbbells especially when lifting 50 pounds plus. Just buy the right weight set to start off with, get the 90 pound set and you are good. Had mine for over 20 years, no problems.

      It's just convenience. The old ones take more time to change compared to the Powerblock or Bowflex.
      After a while, the lock on the older adjustable dumbbells starts to get loose

    I have the older powerblock elites, the more colorful version with the expansion up to 70lb. Switching weights in 10 lb increments is really fast with a little practice.

      Thanks for watching. The bench is this one here ShreddedDad.com/bench
      You can watch a review video I made about it here ua-cam.com/video/GNUjId0dFTc/v-deo.html
      I've owned the bench for over a year and it's lasted so yes I do recommend it. Folds away easy so I can park my car inside.

    A great video thankyou. The bowflex are slick but the powerblock seem like the more sensible option

      They both work but I prefer the Powerblock. They're stout.

    Curious about different range of motion. Is it weird curling square blocks at all?

    Hi. I love this video. Thank you so much! My question is this: on Amazon this product is around $700, but in local sporting goods stores is closer to 300. Do you think this is because of shipping? Do you know why there would be such a price difference? It is the same product. I am thinking maybe supply and demand? This product is out of sporting goods stores right now, but I am on the waiting list. Just curious if you had thoughts. Thanks again for the video!

      Most likely supply and demand. People are buying them then reselling them for way too much. Go with the local store if they are the same.
