Both sound great but I prefer Warren's because it takes advantage of the room sound. What would John Bonham’s drums be without the stairwell at Headley Grange, on Led Zeppelin, When the Levee Breaks? I LOVE when engineers take advantage of the environment they're recording in. It makes the performance special and showcases the signature sound of the studio. In other words, you can't get that exact sound anywhere else. AWESOME VIDEO!!! 🥁🎶🎹🎶🎸
"Bay-tuh 91" lmao :)
Waiting for those one shot samples!
@@MrMusic-nd5to Thanks! You can download both the multi tracks and mix them for yourself! Nolly and I both used the staircase mic, in the board mix you hear from tracking I pushed the staircase mic heavier!
@@williamtell1477 Bee Tuh and Bay Tut! Although of course being an American mic it;s most likely Bay Tuh! Ha Just like Beyerdynamic is Buy Yuh Dynamic not Bay Yuh Dynamic! Ha
Nolly is such a breath of fresh air in the Metal production community, he understands the importance of building solid rhythmic foundation with the bass and drum tones he's known for, when you consider that he's originally being a guitarist himself.
We are HUGE fans of Nolly's!
Warren: live
Nolly: isolated.
Both are great for different reasons.
Aw shucks!! Thanks ever so much
@@Producelikeapro love ya, Warren! You produced my parents’ favorite records and nolly our generation. We always look to the past for wisdom. No shame from your gen of producers!
@@TKAM88 your parents were fans of the Fray?
Not to be a turd, but if you like metal please give my band a listen. Open to all comments! Thank you!
Much love!
@@spitfiremusic3997 I think everyone enjoyed the fray in the mid 00’s
This is quite simply one of the best videos EVER posted on UA-cam. The knowledge and experience shared is second to none, both approaches work in their own way, but it’s the TON of information imparted so very well that makes it so special. Fantastic video!!❤❤❤
Wow, thank you! That is VERY kind of you! And, it means a lot coming from you guys!! Thank YOU ever so much!
Dude, Nolly is a great interviewer. He's asking fantastic questions when breaking down Warren's drum setup.
Yes! We are definitely doing more of these together!
This was so much fun. Great to see the video is finally out!
Glad you enjoyed it! You rock my friend!!
This might be the best drum recording video you've ever done Warren, or maybe the best one ever. Two absolute masters shooting the shit about the intricacies of recording a kit. I'm estimating I'll watch this one at least 10 times to get all the nuggets from it. Cheers for an incredible bit of learning
Wow! Thanks ever so much Adam! That really means a lot!
I love how Nolly's down to earth and Warren feels like a kid in a candyshop, love you guys (and Kristian too)
Thanks ever so much!
This is awesome! This should become a series! Not just drums but guitars and bass cab micing. Engineer x Engineer.
Good work fellas!
This kind of video is my happy place. I just finished the Nolly Drum course via Kristian's academy and submitted my mix today. I will be downloading these tracks as well. Thanks Warren and Nolly!
That is awesome! Thanks ever so much!
My god, just absolutely ridiculously well recorded drums on both counts! Nolly’s tracks all fit together so well that they already sound mixed, and Warren’s have so much life and character with every channel adding a little something-something in addition to the main thing it’s capturing. Unbelievably cool
Very well said
As a drummer into my 51st year of playing, this was extremely enjoyable and educational. To cut to the chase, as presented, I would most certainly go with Nolly's approach and final sound. First of all, great drumming. That makes a huge difference. And the kit is well prepared for the session. Again, very important.
I always want my drums in the most wide-open space it can be. It would have been nice to just hear the drums, even with just a two-mic setup as to how it sounded naturally in the room. My guess would be that Nolly's location would afford a more expansive and dynamic location vs. being closer to the back wall approach used by Warren.
I am very impressed with the backwards approach of recording the kit from the batter side. His description of having basically three levels of sounds, each with specific characteristics, is brilliant. The snare drum, I haven't used a wood shell drum since I was in Jr. High in the mid 70's, exploded to life when those rear remote mics were engaged. While I would prefer the Black Beauty snare...what Nolly got out of a very high-quality snare drum is very nice.
It just feels more "alive" to my ears. And as a player, that is inspiring and will most certainly contribute to me wanting to deliver the best tracks I possibly could!
When Warren said "I can't stand that sound" talking about the snare bottom mic, I really felt that 🥰🥰🥰
Haha thanks! I’ll have to go back and remember what context that was in
@@Producelikeapro hahahahaha, always a gentleman! ❤️
The drummer is dope!!!!!
He killed that performance ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾
It's my first time being able to examine the raw tracks off them Josephson's and my god how good they are. The toms sound almost finished before you've even touched them. No wonder they are so expensive. They sound amazing!!
Glad you like them! We love them too!
Ive been following Nolly for years now. Its so awesome seeing you over at his spot now! Two greats in one video damn.
This was so great. Didn't plan on watching the whole thing in one sitting but I did haha. So awesome hearing two great producers sharing their knowledge and ideas. Definitely need more of this!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks ever so much
This is a dream come true! So excited when I read the title in my notifications!!!
Thanks ever so much!
THIS is absolutely amazing, really learned a lot! It shows the unique character and sound choices producers make consciously - both sound gorgeous! Nolly's is a bit more snare based and brighter, Warrens has more oomph and really this vintage vibe - great mic choices both of you!
Nolly on recording Animals as Leader's "Joy in Motion": I was a lot less experienced
Me: OH FAHK AWF!!!! THE DRUM MIX ON THAT WAS ICONIC!
Yes! Listened it sounded great! It was a revelation to me to hear the drum sounds I knew! Sam, my engineer did my usual set up and it was printed from 2 inch tape to Pro Tools!
Wow! This was one of the best drum production videoa Ive ever seen. Its like technique, philosophy and idea overload! But in my humble opinion I think there isnt one that is better than the other. For what I like and am hearing they are both absolutely great drum recordings but they both belong to different genres. Which was totally expected to me. Warren captured an AMAZING pop rock/classic rock drum sound to where Nolly got an AMAZING modern rock/metal sound. Not that Warrens couldnt be used on a modern rock song. When I hear them back-to-back for some reason I picture Warren's as the Valhalla Vintage Verb 70's setting and Nolly's as the Modern setting. 😂 Thank you both so very much! You are both incredible.
Wow! Thanks ever so much I really appreciate it! Marvellous comment!
Amazing vid guys! Just in time for my next batch of drum tracks. Two different sounds both amazing. Thank you for doing this shootout!
I don’t even record drums but I love the craft of it all and this is by far the most informative and interesting and down to earth drum recording video on UA-cam. Regardless of genre you can learn SO much from this just from all the side comments. Brilliant stuff guys.
Thanks ever so much! I really appreciate it!
Lovely video. Absolutely fascinating to watch how to build two different sounds, the modern "clean" and the classic "edgy", from the same kit and player. Amazing how much of a difference one single person can make to a record. Thank you @Producelikeapro and Nolly, this video is absolutely gold
I follow this channel from the beginning and this might be my favorite video of you ever. Amazing concepts showing two very different styles for the same song. Important lesson that there is not that one blue print you can just copy. There are thousand ways to record drums.
Wow! Thanks ever so much!
Very cool video!!! This is probably your most in depth recording drums video I've seen you post. I appreciate all the discussion and reasoning behind both your mic choices and mic pre/eq choices. This is all very good information. Both mixes sounded good and they both had great things to each of them. I loved that you both kept saying the importance of having a good consistent drummer playing on a great kit in a great room!!! Why should it be any different for drums than any other instrument!!! After all, the sound all starts in the hands and how the drummer hits the drums!!! It's no different for guitar players or keyboardists!!! Great video!!! Thanks for sharing Warren!!! 😎🎶
Nolly is an absolute sweetheart and amazing person along with being an incredible engineer. I had the honor of working with him on two projects, and the guy is just THE BEST.
Thanks ever so much for sharing Jordan!
This was a great video, you're both so animated and visibly enjoying it and got into the weeds. I'd love to see more deep dive collabs like this one with you and Nolly with guitars, bass, keys and vocals. You both have a great chemistry.
I’ve been hoping to see Nolly on here for years!!!!!!
Marvellous! Thanks Charlie!
This is one of the best vids. Truly marvelous. Just incredible to see the compare and contrast fleshed out with all the various reasoning and ideas behind the choices. So. Much. Information. Thank you so very much, Warren, Nollie and everyone involved!
WOW! Thanks ever so much Chaz! I really appreciate it!
So good! Thanky you Warren and Nolly for such a great masterclass.
Brilliant content! I think it all depends on taste and what you go for in the production. Both work fine
Wow! What a detailed video, engineer vs engineer really works well.
There are so many videos out there about recording drums, before I clicked the play button I went SIGH... another non detailed drum recording video (as many youtube videos about the matter are), but boy I was wrong :)
This is the best video I've seen from you it really gave me more confidence thank you
Just watching this today, immediately recognized the Josephson mics - RIP Steve Albini ♥️
I think he would have liked Warren’s drum recordings here.
Thanks ever so much for saying, I really appreciate it
Such a beautiful and useful video. Thank you for this!!
Room mics from behind. Easily sounds more eq'd. I'm sold
Marvellous!
Absolute phenomenal. Both of these dudes are absolute treasures. Loved seeing a video with two completely different methods to show people there are more than 1 way to skin a cat, there is actually an almost infinite number, and the fact that both finished products are world class in completely different ways is just marvelous. 10/10
AW shucks! Thanks ever so much Ryan!
Warren's is super live for better or worse, but personally i don't think it fit the song as good as nolly's, which was focused and tight with just the right amount of room sound. Nolly's felt like it was already mixed. Gonna have to watch this over several sessions.
Yeah. The first thing I thought right when the video started was "holy ...room mics" lol
@@metalpuppet5798 haha right?! Exactly! If you are going for that sound amazing! Felt very late 80s/early 90s in a lot of the best ways. Of course this song felt like a modern pop punk sorta vibe. Just doesn’t fit as well. Now I have no idea if the drums were mixed in post or if this was just raw with the track. I’m only like 10 minutes into the video and gotta take care of some business for the next few hours.
Nah, prefer the breathing drum kit way more than stuck up sound. Fits the guitars perfectly.
The other one sounds like a remix.
Fucking love nolly's mix. Very fitting. The raw tones sounds incredible too.
Actually I think Warren's can easily be turned into a Foo Fighters type of sound. You'll need to do a bit of parallel compression to bring out the close mics and what not, but they already have so much personality that with fairly standard mixing techniques you can achieve a pretty unique drum sound. Nolly's sound more "balanced" overall, but also a bit boring maybe? You can do great work with both approaches regardless
Great studio, great drummer and so much detail. Fantastic content. Wasn't familiar with Nolly until now, but what a great ear. Thanks so much!
Thanks ever so much!
This is absolute GOLD! Thank you so much
these are both incredible! id love to hear something in between these two styles honestly!
Easily done in the mix! Those are raw fader up mixes, the blend can be easily changed! Download the tracks and try for yourself!
We recorded at Electrical Audio w/ one of the house engineers and he used the E22s, surprisingly he also had them angled/not parallel. They were just perfect at mix time. Cad M179s and Audio Technica ATM450 are really good poor man's substitutes. The latter in particular because it's so small and side address. The bottom end is just huge on them too. I wish it had a little less output like the E22, but it does sound great, and I rarely have to do much to my toms in mixing. Switching to condensers on toms was a revelation for me.
My two favorite engineers. Listening to this while im at work. Cant wait to get home and change my kit setup a bit.
Thanks ever so much! I really appreciate it!
The Animals as Leaders - Warren connection is blowing my freaking mind.
Haha who knew? I didn’t!!
I'm so happy about this. My biggest influences and learning resources on producing and mixing working together in one video. Thank you guys so much!
Thanks ever so much!
Brilliant video 👏 Loved that 201 on the snare. So good.
I’m glad I watched this for several reasons. But firstly, Nolly mentioned (more than once) the importance of getting the record levels of each mic roughly the same. Which I would agree is an axiom of recording drums.
Especially if you like using the mic, it’s type and placement before ever touching an eq.
Thanks so much for doing this. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for doing this Warren, this was a fantastic video, I already downloaded the tracks.
Nolly definitely has an ear for great drum sounds but with that being said, I really enjoyed both approaches!
Never clicked a video faster.
We love you both!
Thanks ever so much! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Thank you so much for this. Great video and what a drum sound!!! Fantastic! And the drummer is really good!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
Absolutely fascinating video! One of the best you've done Warren, thank you
Great video guys! Really interesting to follow the discussion about each setup. Btw. You mentioned in the video that you captured some samples of the drums. Where can we download these samples?
My samples are included! We are getting Nolly’s to add
KM 184 is really good for ride, it adds a bit of lower heft that I find missing in other small condensers.
So many little nuggets of wisdom in here from you both 👏 lots of new things for me to experiment with 🙏
Thanks ever so much Edward!
Warren went all in for that 90s Brendan O' Brien sound!
I would bring bring down the rooms and overheads a little bit though and it would feel tighter and closer to Nolly's.
His close mics sounded amazing as well!
They both rock!
I learned so much from this!
I just tried mixing it. It sounds incredible when the source tone is good.
That’s marvellous to hear!!
Really a wonderful session Warren ! Thanks for sharing the multitrack session 😎! It proves that a lot of attention must be put in the mic placement😁🤘🏻
D12 for mono room. Who knew!? Great sounds all around. Really fun watch.
Right of the bat you can clearly hear the difference engineering makes in a recording. With no mixing whatsoever Nolly's approach sounds punchy and modern while Warren sounds vibey an old school. Great video! I hope you do more of these!
wow incredible, Thanks for posting this video.
Thanks ever so much!
Wow this is so cool to see, both are equally great but with very different vibes, Nolly's being dryer and tight and Warrens being very live sounding
They both managed to get such different vibes out of same drumset/drummer/song/room/outboard gear.
Proves a point of how much a producer/engineer can shape a song.
I want them both on my album, lol!
Love these longer videos!! This is top notch content
Thanks ever so much Christopher!
This is just a brilliant example of how to do it…thanks a lot for these insights ❤
Glad it was helpful! Thanks 🙏
Thanks ever so much
Great video, thank you guys!
Thanks ever so much!
The brick wall and far room are incredible . Horses for courses using different snares. (personally would love to hear a JT or a 14x5.5 Brady for warmth on this track ). You both would be great mixing and working together on a record . Great video
Thanks ever so much for sharing!
Such a great video Gents!
Thanks ever so much!
These shoot outs are great.. I'd love to see a shootout of a full productions... engineer vs engineer to see how everything is done in the tracking process for all instruments.
This was very cool and informative 👍 thanks guys!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great Vid! Enjoyed that! Cheers Warren and Nolly!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing!!!! Thank u guys very much!!
Our pleasure! Thanks ever so much
This video was great, it would be interesting to see how you both would make decisions recording drums in a smaller, less than ideal room and with perhaps either some cheaper equipment or even user suggested equipment to fit a budget (for example Nolly mentioning the Behringer B19a as a budget version of the 91a). I think it would be valuable for a lot of people to see how you would make decisions in a situation similar to theirs but with this videos level of depth :)
You guys should take this and future episodes that may be like this one step further, let each person mix the other persons drum recording. That would be sooooo interesting!
Nolly talking about positioning the drummer nearer the booth to improve the experience and performance of the drummer and engineer is class
Indeed. When I track I pretty stand facing the musicians 99% of the time. The Engineers and Producers with their feet up on the console really bothers me! Ha All I can think of is Al Schmitt telling them off for doing it!
Regarding that tom mic thing: those mics have only 3 mV/Pa sensitivity + a trafo making the bleed/transients closer to dynamic with the flatness/bandwidth of a condenser.
You are free to look for a cheaper replacement with same features!
Lauten LS208 has 5mV/Pa and narrower polar pattern (but no trafo and more coloured freq response)
Great stuff. Thanks very much
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks ever so much!
I like doing the room mics behind the kit as well
Amazing! Thanks ever so much for sharing
About panning drums I personally prefer drummer perspective because it's easier to airdrum the coolest grooves and fills and I kinda think that fills should go left to right like text. :D That left to right reasoning thing for me might be a little weird but for some reason I think that left to right feels more like going forward and right to left feels like backing up. :D
Hey warren, i have a neve 1073, and i find that it is a little harsh on my cymbals than my prism pre's which are a little less colored. Do you guys find this problem too? do you avoid the 1073 on some high frequency stuff? iv heard people do... though it is the most awesome choice for low end, and guitars yes very true...
Thanks for all the great videos btw!
Great video. Guys, I am curious, sorry if it was covered. Do you time align a room track that is far enough away from the kit to result in what must be 20-30 milliseconds of delay, causing a flam? Warren, I know you usually do, but this seems to be debated alot and I'm a drummer / producer guy, so would love to hear what both of you recommend/did?
Warren's recording really reminds me of the drum sounds on Foo Fighter's The Colour and the Shape
Thanks ever so much
Nailed it...
@@KratosIsSick thanks ever so much!
In fact now I am on a post hardcore run because of this. Glassjaw Coloring book. Fantastic sounds & drums.
2 different approaches that sound amazing. If i had to pick one i would pick the #Nolly one but that's because of my age! Thanks Mister Warren for this experience 😃😃😃
I prefer Nolly’s approach for metal but Warren’s for rock!
Nolly's more of a modern rock and metal kind of guy so yeah.
2 guys that are very generous in terms of sharing their knowledge! :))
Thanks ever so much!
Loved that! Drums r/x💕❣️💃
Absolutely wonderful!! 🎉
Thanks ever so much!
Thank you so much!
I am wondering which version of the AKG 414's Warren is using for his overheads ? They sound fantastic.
Hi! Thank you for this instructive lesson! Question: Are the tracks provided time aligned? If not, can you elaborate more on how you do that? Many thanks
They are supplied as they were recorded. Time alignment is a matter of taste! Some people use it aggressively, some not at all and something a small amount! Try different things and see what works for you
@@Producelikeapro thank you very much for taking the time to reply!. Will give it a go and keep on learning. All the best!
Warren's drum mix is a really interesting choice - quite unexpected! I really like the bigness. I wonder if that's your Queen influence coming in :) Although Roy Thomas Baker snares were not usually as "live" as that. I think the kick sound on Warren's is much better too. But either could work in the mix just as validly :D The beauty of subjectivity.
Ok, this is just awesome guys!
Thanks ever so much
A mix of Warren’s snare sound with the tightness of Nolly’s kik and toms.
Wow this is a masterclass, thanks Warren!🙏🏻
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!

with all the talk about phase and cancellation, have you ever covered the Abba method? I recall reading something that their engineer used double mics for noise reduction before Dolby
So if you pan overheads 70-80, how would you pan room mics then?
My go-to has been to pan overheads at 70 or recently i tried even 50, but i'm still kind of in the process of figuring out where to pan the rooms. (If we're talking about one set of room mics, so two room mics with to two overhead mics)
