Lately I received a package from Tukan, for Reaper the "verb ducker" and "Lexican 1 and 2" are pretty good. And the waves CLA echo is still on my list. For guitar, mostly the PA bx-2500 and bx-rooMS. And tape delays and a few well known from Valhalla.
I love using SSL on the bus, Distressor and some sort of saturation in parallel, 1176 always works for Overheads, Liquid Sonics has some really good verbs and delays! I've been using Lustrous Plates and Seventh Heaven a lot lately!
I feel Joe is the person to ask this following question because he recently told us he likes to use the whole panning spectrum in his mixes. Not 'LCR' or any of that.
My question is: You have 2 overhead tracks and 2 room mic tracks. How would Joe pan them?
It's a toss-up between a Lexicon PCM80 Plate reverb or a Yamaha SPX990 Room - but after watching Joe's video, a touch of compression and EQ on there also work wonders!
@@chriswalker4616 thanks for sharing!
SSL channel strip has to be Joe’s most essential plugin! Love it!
It truly is!! LOVE THEM!! Thank you for watching Tyler 🎉
The fake room trick is really a neat one, I always do it when recording in super dry and tiny rooms. Send the different drum tracks to a realistic level you would hear at the room microphones place (less cymbals top, less kick lows) to the room simulator, you'll get probably better room sounds and more controlled than with a pair of microphones in a real space. Thanks Joe for sharing all the knowledge!
Thank you for watching!!
@@InTheMixJoeCarrell thanks for your great tutorials!
It doesn't happen often, but I love it when you reveal that you do something I've been doing through shear ignorance and trusting my ears (short room to big room, flanger on drum fills). But you always expand my knowledge and give me more confidence in my future mixes. I usually end up pausing the video and clipping and pasting a couple of plugins with your settings to refer back to later. Thanks!
Nice! Thank you for watching Mike and best wishes!!!
I use both Ocean Way and Sunset Studio reverb on almost ALL of my mixes. It's like putting the band INTO one of those studios. It's great!
🎉
Thanks for sharing!
You Rock Joe!
12:14 that's a golden tip! Very good video!!! Awesome tips!
Thanks ever so much!
Thank you!
I can't help but singing "Gimme just another night, just another night with you..." (Mick Jagger) to your drum groove all the time.
Haha very mice!
Or NICE even!

For a second I read "Steve Carell" 😅 and I was like What?
Quite a different guy! Although Joe is very funny indeed!
Hahaha. Thank you for watching!

great talking about how to create a fake room.
I did a session today where I feel like it needs it, although I've just never managed to get the hang of sound city studios the UA plugin, so I guess I'll try some other stuff.
I've got a D112 and an 87 on the kick, a 421 and a CC8 on the snare, 421s top of each tom and C414s as overheads, audient EVO16.
Thanks Marshall for sharing!
Best wishes Marshall!
That was great Joe. Some really interesting stuff. Thanks very much and a big thanks to the PLAP crew
Thank you Joey!!
Thanks ever so much Joey!

First time I knew I heard cool drum effects was on the Kiss Alive, with the flange sound;)
First time I actually didn't know what I was hearing was the Levee Breaks reverb also had a delay effect lol.
Yes it sure did. Love both tricks when they are right. Thank you for watching
Verbtastic!! Thanks for showing us your process Joe! 🤩
Marvellous!
Thank you for watching Chris!

Great one! Using Sound City Rooms on current track . But Ocean Ways gets used alot and Sunset Sounds.
Add flange to drum fills. Way cool.
Another great video Joe! Love that blending effect. Keep 'em coming! 😃
Thank you for watching Paul!
Thanks Paul!

Like Warren…You’re such a great teacher… thank you for taking the time to explain…🙏🏻🤗
Thank you!
LOL great opening... you should've added "Ya'll c'mon, we'll leave the lights on fer ya." -- seriously, great video!
Haha. Thank you Frankie!
Joe - that’s given me plenty of new ideas for my next project. Thank you as always ❤
Marvellous!
Thank you for watching Ian!
This is brilliant. 1000 likes. One thing I do if the room doesn't sound so great (like in my basement) is use the SPL transient designer to take a little room off and then send that to Sunset or I also have the FAME reverb, which like a little better. The blending reverbs is a chef's kiss. Great stuff.
Thank you for watching!
I use the Sunset Sound and Ocean Ways all the time when mixing drums. I use my own drum rooms that I record myself first and mangle them until I like em -- but I'll still supplement with these especially if I want more roomy kick and snare in parts with automation. I'll have to check out those Reverb Foundry plugs -- nice. Love the Safari plugs -- super fun. Thanks Joe!
Thank you for watching Billy!!
Thanks ever so much for sharing Billy!
love the fake roomizer! I'm primarily a live mixer, and I've been doing a similar thing with my drums live where I obviously don't have room mics available. it's pretty fantastic! especially on outdoor festivals
Thank you for watching Dustin!!
Great tricks Joe!!!!
Marvellous!
Thank you!
So many great ideas that will be fun to try on other elements of the mix as well
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love all your video Joe, you teach us so much and make it fun.
Thank you Jesse!
I really love EMT for room my drums...
Marvellous!
Great as always joe 🤘
Joe Rules!
Thank you for watching!
I would love to have the T-Rack Sunset. "Everything sounds better at Sunset Sound - Steve 'Luke' Lukather.
I HAVE to work there someday!
Hi Joe!
Hello Murray!!
Uncle Joe! you`re my hero!
Haha thank you Pablo!
Hey Joe! I noticed you dont have any space between most of your rack gear….is that OK? I usually just space my tube gear
I do keep spaces between anything that is tube and runs hot!!
I’ll accent the toms nicely by feeding them to the same reverb as the vocals….and still have an SPX 90 for snare room/ambience, sometimes reverb imbalance comes from using inverse comb filters on left/right reverb units, nearly snagged a reall Qauntex for $800 but the guy decided to keep it in the last minute….😤😢😭
I always visualise the band on a stage (first reverb) in a room/hall (second reverb) and layer them together, see toms above, and then into sound particles energy planner for more movement and interest to the sound
Thanks for watching Murray!
Thanks so much for the great video. Definitely trying this approach on my next mixes. And the vocal reverb approach as well. Gonna go back and rewatch that next.
What’s the thinking behind which drum tracks have FX sends?
Awesome to hear. Typically if I use Reverb, it’s only going to be on the snare drum and tom-toms more often than not. Every once in a while, it can creep on overhead and rooms as well. But I’m virtually never gonna add it to the high hat or ride cymbal mic for example.
BTW: What about the Another Love Song Mixing contest results?
The results were released on Monday!
Here's the results video:- ua-cam.com/video/L-l_VDgA_-E/v-deo.html
Yeah, check out that link Warren sent you. Hopefully winter lose some of the comments made by the artist as well as myself from the producer chair will be usable for you
The place that Masters my tracks says they prefer no processing on tbe Master Bus. Does that mean the Mastering Engineer will do the limiting etc? I guess so.
PS I do add about 2dB of mix bus compression but that is it.
In that case I would suggest giving them a before and after mix. So they can hear what you did. However, it’s pretty standard for compression and EQ to be on the master bus of all pro mixes, they just might mean excessive compression, eq, limiting etc. so to be safe give them both versions
@Producelikeapro Oh that's a good idea, thank you.
I would suspect they mean only to leave off the final limiting. Stereo bus compression and equalization are standard and mix decisions are based on what you are hearing with them on
Awesome video, Joe! I'd like to rip some drum hits from these multitracks to use in my music? Would I have to pay or attribute PLAP or yourself?
You mean like create a
Drum sample to trigger? Go for it 👊🏼👊🏼
I know you guys are there too! 😂❤
Hoping at least 😀
In a live setting - what is happening at FoH with bands who have tricked up drums on their recordings doing with live board rigs? Off-board processing with Waves and 3rd party VSTs like this to replicate the album sounds managed by the FoH mixer and snapshots? I know that premium bands (ie. Rush (RIP Neil), et al) have had whole drum rig setups which would include processing and a dedicated drum mix tech doing it. How do the bands who get a great mix take it out live?
I don’t think live performances are always trying to recapture the exact sound of the album.
You couldn’t have known we’re here 🤚🏻
Hahah. I was hoping though !
Is it fake if it sounds and becomes timeless?
Hey Freddy, I’m not sure your question, but since you used the word fake I’m thinking you mean emulating a drum room that doesn’t exist? If it sounds great, I don’t care if it’s a plug-in or recorded tracks I’ve been given! Thank you for watching!
