What are some crazy drum recording techniques do you like? Moses Schneider has worked with huge international acts such as Pixies and Nick Cave, big-selling German bands Tocotronic and Kreator, and has made a name for himself as an author. He is also known for creating the famous 'Wurst Mic" technique along with two newer techniques; the 'Droom' and the 'Snareo'. Multitracks of his recording are also available to practice with and add these new techniques to your recording arsenal: producelikeapro.com/blog/drum-recording-with-moses-schneider/
Not a recording technique but still a cool trick. You can Frequency Shift and EQ Match your auxilary snare/kick sample so they blend better with the live drums!
well .. dirt mic.. take a cheap dynamic and point it into a wall or corner.. 2-3m from the kit... or 1 cm above the floor pointing down. And then put a distressor on it at full Monty. The Wurst mic I use ALWAYS.
Absolutely DELIGHTED to see Moses featured here, and explaining some of his supercreative ideas & tricks!! 👍🏻👍🏻 The man is a true treasure, creatively well off the beaten track and regrettably too often off the radar of the usual USA/UK recording & studio biz focus. Kudos x 1000 for this! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I love the Droom concept! I often put room mics behind walls, gobo’s, or doors which eliminates lots of cymbals and you can get a huge drum sound, However… you do have to deal with the flamming which can be a pain to get right. This seems like same result but 100 times easier. Can’t wait to try it. Mind blowing end of this video with Moses’ sound design ideas! This Information Age is truly inspiring with access to people like Warren and Moses Schneider’s brilliant minds!
Moses never ceases to inspire me and make me smile! Honestly feels like he is in touch with the childlike-wonderment that we all felt when we started listening to music; so vital.
i never would have thought of putting a mic THERE!! 🤔 or that kind of mic so many new and exiting concepts to try...thank you Warren and thank YOU Moses!
Have Moses and Trent Reznor ever worked together bc these drum sounds give me some NIN feelings in the best possible way. It’s far from imitation. It is shared aesthetic. Of course hip hop rules the world with these sample pack/beat packs but I’m hearing industrial glory mixed with some of the great aggrotech vibes of Germany. Loving the European focus lately. It turns out Europeans have a culture and have contributed to the great works of human art after all.
I love Mose’s techniques. I’ve read his book and applied his inconvetional techniques so many times. Specially when recording everybody together. The Würst miking is always present in my drum recordings.
The whole mindset makes it shine. What a wonderful video this is. Thanx Warren for sharing this to a large audience. . And of course: kudos to Moses for sharing these inspiring thoughts.
Well done on finally getting Moses on your channel!... he is a creative genius - so innovative in his thinking about mic techniques. A few years back I bought his book "The Alternative Workbook - or How to Pimp Your Practice Room", which is excellent, and included the "wurst" mic technique, which I've used. Droom and Snare-O are equally cool ideas, thanks!
One of my favourite videos so far from PLAP. Would love a further deep dive on Moses' editing techniques, perhaps as they get closer to the release of the pack? His drum ideas aren't too far from my own, but I got most of those tips from phone conversations with Glyn Johns 30 years ago, when I was but a young lad (who'd managed to crib his number from New Model Army's 'Slade The Leveller'). The best piece of advice: 'keep a tape measure handy'.
Its refreshing and inspiring to see a man with such a track record and still maintains this childlike enthusiasm and such an emotional bond with his craft and with the music This guy hasn’t forgotten why he is doing what he is doing I shared this clip with a young engineer I befriended recently he is 28 I will be 62 and he told me - Udi he reminds me of you… I told him I consider this as a big compliment
I tried the “droom” technique in my last drum session after seeing him explain it in a different video and it really did make everything sound huge. It won’t work for every song, but it really surprised me!
Very inspiring stuff!!..........I've always wanted to try a room mic that was close to the kit, but facing the opposite direction. I'm going to try it with my old SM7. I'm prepping to do a drum session next month for the first time in 5yrs!.....and I'm needing some inspiration.........VOILA' !! 😊🙏
Wow I think he just solved my issues with having a crappy room sound, low ceilings, etc. with wurst and snareo technique. Now I just need more mics and inputs. The Droom technique sounds cool. I thought Blumlein was cool in front of a kit, but this is really exciting and I can’t wait to try this.
I'm a huge fan of Moses and applying his wurst micing technique on every drum's rec. I've some questions for him : - Aren't 441 mics are supercardioids and not hypercardioids ? As i plan to use my telefunken M81 (supercardioids) for Drooms ;-) - And aren't NT5 are cardioids or do you use NT-45 O omni capsule on its ? Can't wait my next drum rec session to try your wunderbar creative techniques 🙂 Danke sehr !!!
@@Producelikeapro definitely! Will you work with him for the Kult? I think he would fit in nicely there! For example he did the Kreator Album Hordes of Chaos, I would love to see a Kollaboration with him. LLtK! 🤘🏻
One question: Moses says he ended up with the omni polar pattern for the SnareO, but then he uses the RODE NT5 Mics, which are cardioid - or can you switch polar patterns on those? Best regards and Moses rulez! 🙂
"...for zis extra bass zee love in Berlin so much, I invented zee In-Arsch mic technique. You take a SM57 and tell zee drummer to take off his pants..."
I prefer a single mono overhead mic, usually my modified Rode Nt2 in omni and I hit it with few compressors, none of which are compressing very heavily. I also avaoid SM 57s on snares... nothing wrong with them I just have others I prefer like my vintage AKG D190 E... get it real close to the shell.
Please forgive my ignorance and misunderstanding... When he is presenting the "Wurst" mic technique, is he saying "cheese bell"? Like a dish to keep cheese in? Can someone politely explain his analogy? Thank you!
@@austinbridge He used the word "dome" ("sphere" may be a better term here) to refer to the capturing of the drum kit as a whole. And then he says the "wurst" is outside of that "sphere". BTW, the term "wurst" comes from the German word "verwursten", which means "to mangle".

Not a recording technique but still a cool trick. You can Frequency Shift and EQ Match your auxilary snare/kick sample so they blend better with the live drums!
I taped a piezo to the wall of my drum room, for huge room sound. I was able to crush it to bits because there was really good cymbal rejection.
In fact, I love to use Moses Wurst's technique to have the possibility to add a lot of excitement to my drum sounds if needed.
well .. dirt mic.. take a cheap dynamic and point it into a wall or corner.. 2-3m from the kit... or 1 cm above the floor pointing down. And then put a distressor on it at full Monty.

The German pronunciation of "Röde" blows my mind on how cool it sounds! 😎
Love the German O sound!
Well… it’s not that correct either. We don’t have the letter ø here in Germany. It’s Scandinavian. But it’s pronounced somewhat like our ö. 😁
