Ive seen quite a few videos that show the limits of art restoration on this channel. I highly doubt any art would be unable to benefit in some degree from restoration.
So, this is the first time I'm watching Baumgartner Restoration without my mother, sadly she passed away on Christmas day. It feels so odd to watch it without her. Both me and her love this channel and enjoys both Julian and Kits enthusiasm about the work they are doing.
Thank you! I worked with Doctors without Borders for 6 years as a trauma nurse. I learned more in those 6 years than I had in the previous 40 years of my life. I became a much better provider, a better human being and my perspective of the world and its peoples changed dramatically. We worked in horrible conditions sometimes, sometimes there was gunfire, sometimes the people were so kind and generous even when we could only communicate in gestures. Supporting their work is amazing!
I was sitting here watching this restoration thinking, "Huh, he's going in a different order than usual.". The reaction when he realized he jumped the gun a bit was entertaining.
My own personal orphan - the son we adopted from a Romanian orphanage when he was six - was treated by Doctors Without Borders for strabismus. How I wish I could personally thank those brave doctors. Our son is now a successful outsider artist and fine young adult. I’ll pray your orphan raises lots of money to help such a worthy cause as Doctors Without Borders. Bless you, Julian!
Unfortunately they won't last that long. PLA absorbs water from the air and the long polymer chains get hydrolyzed (broken down by the water) making it become super brittle over time. So eventually they will just crumble apart, that's the unfortunate reality of using bio based plastics.
@@isotope3234 He's got a Bambu Labs printer, so for sure he'd be able to print something in ABS instead, or maybe even polycarbonate. In 1905, Evert Pieters moved to Katwijk aan Zee (The Netherlands), where he made a large number of beach scenes, often featuring shell fishermen and horses. I live in Katwijk aan Zee and read a lot about its historical riches. So too about many painters who came here to paint seascapes. Thank you for restoring this painting!
@carmenm.4091 Yes it does, Evert Pieters did painted most of his paintings in the same time period as the painters of the "Haagse school", but was not working in The Hague or connected with the "Hofstad". He didn't get much credit for his work in the Netherlands, probably because he was schooled in Belgium. Evert Pieters tried to get a membership at the "Haagse Pulchri studio" but got declined, so he tried to get inside the "Haagse school" movement probably. I have to say, before even finishing the video I was baffled when you said this was a painting no one really wanted. Even when you show the before state, I found it absolutely beautiful. After finishing watching, I have to say that I feel vindicated. It's absolutely stunning.
Hello, Julian! As I watch this new video of yours I just want to say the biggest thank you that I can offer you for helping me. I recently had an exam to be my country's civil servant, more specifically to be a museum curator in one of the art museums managed by the governor of the province I live in. While I went through the initial exam that covers the basic knowledge, the next stage is more difficult because it is about the museum-related knowledge, and that includes museum management and taking care of the museum collection. It was difficult to get more study material because this is not a popular position for people to apply, and the one provided by the government body isn't enough, and my fears were proven when it's time to do the exam. Thankfully, that's when you come in. I watched your videos and find it incredibly educational and interesting, and you never skip over any explanation so I have an easier time remembering it. It turns out a lot of the things you show and explain in your videos show up in the exams! Including how to use the solvent to erase the old varnish, what material to fix a damaged canvas, how to address a warbly canvas surface, everything! As for now, I don't know whether I pass or not, the results will be in by this sunday. But I just want to say thank you for giving me a better fighting chance. Without you, I would have scored far lower and couldn't hope in the way I hope now! Thank you, Julian, and I hope you will be blessed going forward and on!!
I wish you all the best and that you are awarded the curators job you want. What a lovely way to make a living, serving humanity by caring for our culture - along with compassion it's the best of us imo.

What a beautiful idea to save a painting and people at the same time. I love that we get you watch you do your magic repairing it and then the proceeds going to benefit a great organization that puts their lives on the line helping people in desperate need. Thank you.
What a wonderful gesture to a fantastic charity. MSF does amazing work and, seeing the horrific images reaching our screens over the last year or so of seriously maimed babies and children, I can't think of a better organisation to support.
I am unfathomably early to this. I guess thats pretty cool. The fact that Julian just…enters so casually yet so purposefully through a door so conversationally, VSauce style, made me feel uniquely intimidated to the point of alertness, when I felt the haze of 2 hours of sleep creeping up on me just 2 minutes ago. I guess its also made me poetic.

I think the original artist would be really touched to learn someone had put so much care into restoring their artwork to its true glory.
Some hundred years down the line, someone will find and appreciate those keys, made from lovely antique plastic and printed on an ancient machine.

I have to say, I really enjoy your content. I find the care that you take in your work, and even the verbiage you use while explaining every step of your process fascinating. The evenness of your tone can melt away anything going on in my life and make me focus on the video. I cannot tell you how wonderful that is for me, my brain does not shut off because of the time of day and it does not stop just because I need sleep. Thank you very much for your content, May the new year bring a multitude of videos, and an abundance of health and happiness upon you
Always a joy to watch and learn about your skills and artistry when done so properly and professionally
What an amazing change in pre and post video. Wow
I’m a local adjunct at a few community colleges- MFA from SAIC. I primarily teach printmaking and painting and am always fascinated by your pride in sharing traditional techniques, but also your willingness to experiment with new technology to become the best at what you do. I have been implementing self taught 3D printing and laser methods in my curriculum for 5 years or so and am always heartened to find examples of you doing the same in your videos. It’s my first time commenting since subscribing years ago, but thanks for the content!
Amazing, a complete transformation. A joy to watch and witness such talent at work.
I can’t stop watching these videos, it’s ridiculous!
Reminds me of that poem about the old violin, "The Touch of the Master's Hands"
Ah, A Dutch painting almost landed in the trash. Although, as a Dutchie I have never heard of this painter, I am glad it was saved . And It looks very beautiful now!
Thanks- was looking forward to your next triumph over ruination. It never gets boring!
Love this painting, so I am really pleased that you restored it 😊
Felicitaciones por tu trabajo. Desde que he descubierto el canal no dejo de ver tus videos.
Gracias por tu gesto humanitario. El mundo necesita de este tipo de iniciativas.
You doing this makes my heart sing! Thank you Julian you are a very good soul.
On behalf of Dutch heritage, many thanks from the Netherlands 😊
What a fantastic journey the 'Orphan' has gone through. So much skill in a short space of time. A real privilege. Thank you!
This is probably painted in my hometown Katwijk, or in the neighbouring village of Scheveningen. Great job preserving it.
According to Wikipedia, Evert Pieters spent a lot of time in Katwijk so you're probably right.
Came looking for this to see what happened with the auction. $14,600 !! Nicely done.
Even before you cleaned it, it was gorgeous. Who would throw this out???
Beautiful painting nicely restored, my compliments. Great that you saved it from the trash.
The artist is blessing you from the next world.
Such a beautiful painting. I hope it finds a good, appreciative and safe home.
Thank you for your generosity in donating the proceeds to MSF - great idea, and lovely to see the painting so beautifully restored to life.
Such an amazing initiative to donate the funds from the art piece ❤ love your artwork!
Wonderful!! Thank you for your donation!!❤
That’s The Hague School!! One of the best! Terrific Restoration
I do not get why someone would simply throw this away... It's a lovely piece.
And a lovely job Julien, as always.
Iam dutch and the guy in this picture looks dressed like the area I grew up in.
I since moved to another country.
Would love to own it, but unfortunately it will be too much for me now probably.
Probably would cost as much to repair as the owner would expect to gain by the sale.
The auction is going great so far! You restored this painting beautifully, Julian. Can't believe how bright that sky really was.
Beautiful painting. Great that you recovered it 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I loved this painting before you restored it, so seeing the colours come out was fantastic.
I love that Julian calls the too-far -gone paintings “organ donors”.
I really like this video. I especially like the versatility you showed while working on the keys. Very impressive
So cool. Someone has a chance to own this painting. It’s really beautiful and it’s been touched by Julian.
Incredibly generous of you to do this. ❤
I could watch these for hours :)
I have. LOL😂
Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank YOU!
💗 missed you, Julian 🌸💗
Thank you for saving this painting. It was worth it.
