Who are you. Why have I never seen your videos before. And how do you not have a million subscribers. This video made me realize exactly what I’ve been doing wrong in my swing. Best video ever
I'm 77 years old and in my younger days played to a 2 handicap. Twenty years ago I was hit by a vehicle that ran a stop sign and T-boned me on my motorcycle, shattering my leg and rupturing discs in my neck and lower back. ER doc did an amazing job of putting my leg back together, but the back problems caused unbearable pain whenever I swung the golf club. To this day I haven't hit a golf ball in 20 years. I just started swinging the club again with a little discomfort but not the excruciating pain I experienced after the accident. Early on I patterned my swing after Fred Couples and have been trying to groove that swing in my living room, since we've been experiencing severe inclement weather. I saw this video and began to work through the exercises (without hitting a ball, obviously) and feel that my swing is improving because of it. Hopefully I will be able to take this out to the range in a couple of weeks and start grooving my swing. If my back holds up my goal is to shoot my age on a full-length 18-hole course. I'll let you know.
Sorry to hear about your accident but it’s amazing to hear your starting to swing a club again. I hope this helps you swing pain free and gets you playing again

This concept is as good as it gets. For a long time I have tried many different swing ideas with varying results but none felt easy or comfortable. This is legit. Perhaps the best simplification and explanation of the golf swing here. 🎉 What I personally feel is that I’m throwing the club behind me as far as possible. Obviously that makes zero sense but it works for me. It gets my club on plane since I’m rotating the body too. But it just lets you rip it as hard as you want because the plane is stabilized. I think by trying to use my right hand more and throw behind me it keeps my wrist angles even more. Again. Counterintuitive but it works.
I love this because everyone feels the love differently. The key is developing your own feels (like you’ve done) and this allows you to transfer this to the course more easily!
@@michaelmueller6092 this drill is probably the best. As far as further explanation I recommend old UA-cam videos by Monte Scheinblum. Also listen to Mike Malaska talk about his conversations with Jack Nicklaus. Other than that. Go to the range and practice this drill. Get a good feel for it. For me I took it one step further to feel like I was trying to throw the club away from the target (like right leg side, not behind). It starts the momentum down and hands in front of chest, and your turn gets the club back to square
@@Gilesgillgolf it’s definitely a testament to how well you are able to explain things. First time the golf swing just clicked for me. This and your rotation video are my go to when I’m not hitting ball well.

@@Gilesgillgolf I have been doing the split hand drill for a while with great success but I didn't know why it worked. @@dylanskyehart yes so that’s exactly why we do the split hand pump drill. Sounds like everything might have just clicked for you! Glad I could help and be apart of your golfing journey 👍🏻
This coach was spot on with everything he said. I also get too excited and forget to lead with the lower body. Helps to keep in mind to keep the shoulders closed a fraction longer and the right hip shooting out to the right and not online with target.
Can you please explain what 'keeping your right hip shooting out to the right & not on the target line' means & is this explained in this video at anytime?.
This is the best description of how the swing works. I’ve been working on just this, let the club weight take my arms down as I turn through and it’s been so pure and effortless. Again, this video explains this so well. 👍🏼
THANK YOU! Never heard the swing explained in this manner before where the hands and arms only move vertically. Have spent the last 35 years swinging them towards the ball and target or trying to move them into certain positions during the swing. This SIMPLE concept is a game changer. It's actually made my swing almost effortless. Can't thank you enough. Your explanations and delivery are perfect and simple to understand.
wow went to the range and hit balls thinking of moving my hands straight down while keeping my back to the target instead of moving my hands back towards the ball and it felt a lot more effortless and I was hitting my 9 iron high draws 150 yards instead of 130 yard straight cut shots, was great.
@@Gilesgillgolf swing path is ruined by wrong sequence of rotation en arms that probably why 99,99% of all golfers slice and no PGA trainer has the solution bud you
I am all hands and arms in my golf swing and struggle to rotate through impact and release the club properly. I came across this channel accidentally and must say this content is golden, subscribe button well and truly smashed! Explains perfectly what I am struggling with and includes fantastic drills to work on. Thank you Giles 👍🏻
Finally a video that explains how this motion works. I have a tendency to squeeze my shoulders back to allow the club to come in between me and the ball on the way down. I shall try this out at the range soon. Thank you for explaining it so perfectly!
Very good explanation. It is the first video after watching hundreds of videos that helped me to understand what arms and body are supposed to do. Thank you very much!
A long time ago I was watching an instructional set from Ernie Els and when he got to the top of his swing he said to "drop your hands". Can't say I've mastered that move but I'm always working on it. You've gone a step further to elaborate the downswing thanks for putting this up!
My ball-striking consistency just improved dramatically. I have always brought my hands straight to the ball to try to increase lag and shaft lean but it came down to timing. This has just made my swing more effortless and, as I said, more consistent. Great video!
A lot different than most are advising on the trail elbow Giles. This may be my problem as of late. I’m going to work on this tomorrow at the range. The drills you go over are very helpful to understand how to implement your instruction. Thanks for all you do.
I have had that common over the top swing but for some reason YOUR video instruction connected with me (finally). I could not figure out how to use my shoulders to stay inside (path). I have watched video after video trying to get the help I desperately needed. I am soooo thankful to you!! p.s. I subscribed too. ☺
Perfect timing for me to see this. Excellent effort tying in the drills to the Justin Rose videos. I have been collecting Rose's video as a model. The split hand drill I first saw done be a Peter Cohen disciple. The hands going in the straight line down to the foot was a Justin Rose epiphany. I saw Rory McElroy doing the right shoulder rotation drill. You wove them together beautifully and drove the point(s) home.
ua-cam.com/video/JXGSFxOf-Iw/v-deo.html Gilles...still watching this one month later. Such a well produced video. Minimal blather about the faults of golfers and all fix. Too many videos start with a long, lengthy sermon on what golfers do wrong without cutting to the chase. What would be your matching video for the backswing? This video articulates two very important FUNDAMENTALS...hands working vertically and coupled with rotation. Then it boils down to timing. Nailed it!
@@Gilesgillgolf Thanks Giles...really looking forwards to your interpretation. Setup and backswing...how to square the clubface through the process. Should be fascinating just like this video.
Giles, I saw this video and immediately went to the range - I picked up an easy 15 yards with nearly all of my irons by shifting my weight and utilizing the ground better. I didn’t strike the ball pure every time because it’s a swing change, but I am very excited to keep working on it! Thanks for this easy to comprehend explanation.
Just found you Giles and your video instructions are fantastic! I am so inconsistent with my ball striking these drills will help so much I’ve had many lessons over the years but no one has explained the swing mechanics like you have thank you 👍

You are fast becoming a top coach on UA-cam Giles! Great work! I'm someone that gets the trail arm and elbow jammed into my side like you said! So when you say the right arm is widening,is it a feeling like the right arm is straightening out towards the trail foot? And blending this with the rotation? Thanks
I really like your style, especially how you separate the motions of the arms and hands Vs the motion of the body-and how you show them in slow motion. I would love to see a similar video (or videos) on the takeaway, backswing, and transition! (If you have them already, I apologize. I can’t find any in your UA-cam channel.)
Thank you Adam! I’ve got a takeaway video called “It’s that simple”, a rotation video and some videos on the downswing but i have more coming out soon 👍🏻
Good video! Got a question for you: when I work the right arm wider in the downswing, what can sometimes happen is the hands lag behind the rotation and at shaft parallel, instead of the hands being in front of the right thigh like many pros, they are still 4-6 inches behind. So how do you get the right arm wider whilst still putting the club on a shorter arc on the way down compared to the backswing?
Good question! The left arm would need to pull down and across harder whilst the chest stays closed just that fraction wider. Do the split hands pump drill and fell how the left arm works
Great instruction. Keep it coming! It’s funny, I heard about dropping hands into the slot while back but recent golf instructors don’t emphasize it’s importance enough. Perhaps one build, that makes dropping hands easier and more natural is full lead arm extension on backswing coupled with weight shift/transition to forward?
Great stuff! This is exactly what I've been working on recently as my hands have a tendency to get too far out and away from my body on the backswing and downswing. My new swing thought has been, "laces, pocket, turn" to get the hands where they need to be.
Just discovered you. Your instructions and the drills are so clear and easy to understand. You have already diagnosed and solved one of my swing flaws. Thanks
Very well done! I’ve been a pretty good golfer for 40+ years…. This video is simple & concise… a great reminder for me that I can fall into lazy habits… excellent food for thought! Much appreciated! ☮️
Great video You mention the hands control the up and down and body the rotation Once we get to p4 and make a shift to left the hands can come down @ what part of the swing does body rotation kick in to allow that to occur If I force it to happen with hands I get in trouble I have a problem straightening rt arm and getting open @ p6 which I think means my inability to blend the up and down and body rotation Hopefully we can work together - Zoom - in future Thank You
The more muscles the better if it’s applied in the right order and way. Start slow and work up. When out on the course swing at around and 8 or 9 out of 10 for good control and distance
I wish every beginner could see this video before they took their first swing. For every club I think about swinging the arms 'straight back' (I like to feel that my RH stays 'underneath') & to then create the swing arc (and depth) by turning the torso (I key on my left shoulder area). I don't worry about the hands & arms coming down, I just sense pressure in my FF to start the downswing & then pull hard with my belly. In the old days I'd try to create arc by whipping the hands & arms inside .... which is the road to swing misery. Good job !
Thank you Brain! I agree this is such a crucial concept that would fix so many golfers swings & get them playing better straight away! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Mike Austin, ",...this is where I gain the advantage over other players... I throw (stimulation)from the top of the backswing; my hands simply cannot outrace my hips to impact..." Nice Video!

I think by trying to use my right hand more and throw behind me it keeps my wrist angles even more. Again. Counterintuitive but it works.
Yes. Would like to see that type of drill, or any vid links for that feeling.
I love this because everyone feels the love differently. The key is developing your own feels (like you’ve done) and this allows you to transfer this to the course more easily!
@@michaelmueller6092 the split hands drill will give you some similar feels 👍🏻
@@michaelmueller6092 this drill is probably the best. As far as further explanation I recommend old UA-cam videos by Monte Scheinblum. Also listen to Mike Malaska talk about his conversations with Jack Nicklaus.
Other than that. Go to the range and practice this drill. Get a good feel for it. For me I took it one step further to feel like I was trying to throw the club away from the target (like right leg side, not behind). It starts the momentum down and hands in front of chest, and your turn gets the club back to square
@@Dougmolls I’ll check out those other videos. My swing thought is that throwing sensation from the top of the backswing too
Great explanation because no other UA-camr has actually broke it down step by step. They always assume you already know the basics
Great to hear you enjoyed the video! I would say this is actually quite an advanced concept but now you know it 💪🏻

Good luck in taking the game up again! Hope this helps!
An ingenious explanation of what the hands and arms are responsible for in the swing versus what the body is responsible for!
Thank you! Glad you liked it
This is what Pete Cowen teaches but this is the best explanation of this concept I have ever seen. Wow! I am sharing this with everyone I know. Thank you!
Wow thank you Dylan! Great to hear you enjoyed the video and thank you for your support!
@@Gilesgillgolf I have been doing the split hand drill for a while with great success but I didn't know why it worked. I knew I needed to get my hands into the delivery position that Cowen talks about but it was so difficult to do for an amateur, especially when there are so many golf "gurus" out there telling people to keep their trail arm bent. Thank you for explaining this all. I can't wait to get back out there and hit some balls!
Helps to keep in mind to keep the shoulders closed a fraction longer
and the right hip shooting out to the right and not online with target.
Exactly that! Both go hand in hand
That’s amazing! It’s such a crucial concept! Glad I could help!
Amazing Paul! Great to hear my videos have helped!
This tip is great. Its helping me pretty much immediately hit more consistently. Just gotta keep practicing the drill and get used to it. Thanks!
No problem! Hope this ingrains nicely into your swing
One of the best golf videos I’ve seen. Like and subscribed mate.
Thank you TDR! Appreciate your support!
wow went to the range and hit balls thinking of moving my hands straight down while keeping my back to the target instead of moving my hands back towards the ball and it felt a lot more effortless and I was hitting my 9 iron high draws 150 yards instead of 130 yard straight cut shots, was great.

Amazing to hear this video helped! It can be a confusing move but hopefully this has cleared it up for you!

Thank you Don! That was what I was going for so great to hear it all blended together nicely!
ua-cam.com/video/JXGSFxOf-Iw/v-deo.html Gilles...still watching this one month later. Such a well produced video. Minimal blather about the faults of golfers and all fix. Too many videos start with a long, lengthy sermon on what golfers do wrong without cutting to the chase. What would be your matching video for the backswing?
If you watch my latest video with a similar title then it’ll teach you about the deliver position and bring it all together
Great stuff! This is exactly what I've been working on recently as my hands have a tendency to get too far out and away from my body on the backswing and downswing. My new swing thought has been, "laces, pocket, turn" to get the hands where they need to be.
I love that swing thought! Sounds like you’re working on exactly the right thing! It’s going to be a great golfing year for you!

Perhaps the most comprehensive lessons on YT! My big issue lately is how much “muscle” to go with and when to apply. Am I lifting a car or or a pint??
The more muscles the better if it’s applied in the right order and way. Start slow and work up. When out on the course swing at around and 8 or 9 out of 10 for good control and distance
Great video. Will try next time at the range. Different feeling from starting the downswing with the hips and spinning the hips to get out the way.

Glad this video helped Michael!
I remember Justin Rose using that downward drill having NO idea what he was trying to accomplish. Thanks for the explanation - well done!
