Really man. Frehley is a very very simple player and knows absoloutley nothing but 1/4/5 blues based songs and minor Pentatonic boxed scale(s). At 14 I was faster, cleaner, more expansive and tonally superior in every way to Frehley. That sounds like I am being an egomaniac right? No, it just means I did not play sloppy, drunken leads and boring chord progressions all the time. Not a very big statement, and certainly not a claim of being some wiz kid, cuz I was not. I just practiced and tried to pick up any little tips, riffs or rig/amp and stomp boxes to try and create something I could call decent sounding. That was in 1982 (14 yrs. old) and not much has really changed. I am a decent guitarist. No more and no less. I could not shine the shoes of a Ed VH or Joe Walsh, Dimebag, RR or Billy Gibbons just to name a couple of men I look up to still, at 56. Most importantly, I have a blast even just sitting on the couch playing around. It makes me smile.

Ace probably didn`t even say it or was taken out of context by the wallowing media hogs. Someone may have paid them to lie. Ask anyone what usually happens after you say anything at all to the media.
EVH would absolutely decimate Ace in every way shape and form. And I’m a KISS super fan.
First time I heard Eruption in 1978 as a kid, I was blown away. I'd never heard anything like that. There are guitar solos on every VH record that are just awesome. I can't say the same thing about Frehley. I love KISS, but I never listened to those songs for the guitar work. Frehley is entitled to his opinion, but it's like Vinnie Testaverde telling Tom Brady there's more to being a QB than winning Superbowls.
Kool, when I first heard it, I refused to believe it was a guitar. No guitar can sound like that. It has to be some synth that just came out! Then I listened to the whole record and thought; Uh-oh! I think I better begin practicing alot more. This dude is intimidating as hell.
Good video. SRV…was asked during an interview what he thought about other types music styles etc. His answer was perfect. He said, “There’s room for all of it”.
Music is not a sport. Nobody is keeping score. Listen to what makes you tap your feet and to hell with what anyone else thinks. SRV was on the money. Never knew he said that, but it don`t surprise me cuz Stevie was golden. Saw him twice. New years eve at the old Ritz in the east village, midnight show was INSANE!!! I loved that little club! SRV`s sweat was hitting me all night long man. When you get that close to one of the greats you can pick up everything he is doing. You are looking up their noses man!!! I was always fast and slippery at shows back then. I was looking up Ed Van Halens nose twice, and Aerosmith once. I saw VH about 6 times (2 with Roth). Aerosmith 6 too (once without Brad and Joe) and I hated it. Jesus I feel like some old crusty madman!!! Look at what we have today. NOTHING!
Well Ace you're wrong. Eddies solos were song within the song and his guitar solos, you couldn't compete with Eddie.
I disagree as a guitar player myself. I know how tough it is to play like Ed and Malmsteen. The classical based guitarist are honestly tougher to play like than blues based. Ed, obviously is a mixture. I'm not knocking Ace by any means, his style worked perfect for Kiss. But any seasoned guitar player knows that those guys slept with their instruments to get as good as they are. My hat definitely comes off to all the shredders of rock and heavy metal
I understand Ace's comments, but I find melody in both's Yngwie and EVH solos, of course I can't sing Yngwie's solos, because they are so bloody fast, but thar doesn't mean I don't remenber them, because I do. For the first Malmsteen albums as soon as the music starts I can remember every solo.
I thing Yngwie is very melodic in a classical meets rock way, with lots of bendings as good as any great blues player and lots of soul and feeling, just listen to him plyaing Hendrix's stuff.
The same for EVH on another level.
I also dig solo and more simple solos, like those from Clapton. Angus Young, The Band, etc. Basically everything that grabs my attention.
Frehley is so far beneath the level of both Malmsteen and EVH it’s a joke. Listen to Yngwie play the track Marching Out. EVH seismic effect on guitar playing. WTF is going to remember Frehley. All he can play are pentatonic scales and very BADLY
Each guitarists have their own style. I grew up listening to Kiss in the late 70’s and on. I bought Ace’s Solo album over the others, as well as other Kiss albums. I like Ace, but he doesn’t need to criticize other legendary guitarists. There’s a reason why they are legendary, like himself. I understand everyone has their opinions on certain topics, but guitarists should praise each other and not put each other down. And that is my honest opinion. 🤘🏼🎸👍

But Eddie made me want to put it down lmao.... Ace needs to stay in his own lane. if Maestro Van Halen's solos lacked substance, he would have been just another guitar player. his feel and creativity made him a legend.
IIt depends. Ace is right regarding the important part of a solo being the hook,melody, and fit for the song; but what he is missing is that Eddie had that with the technical precision "most of the time." However; with players like EVH-what people are attracted to is the technical piece. That's what amazed people so he is one of the few that could pull that off and still have it fit the song. With Yngwie...I kind of agree- after 1-2 songs I am over it- it just starts all sounding the same. I think Ace is off by lumping EVH with Yngwie
I think Ace is hitting the bottle much more these days. In the 90s I read a article with Steve Miller. He said he was a better guitar player than Hendrix. I had the same reaction with these Ace comments. Stay in your lane Ace. Your decent at that style of playing but that about it.
This is nothing but sour grapes. Gene Simmons had Eddie Van Halen record a solo for Christine Sixteen back in the day, and he loved it so much that he told Ace Frehley to play that solo for the record note-for-note. What you hear on vinyl? That's King Edwards creation.... not Ace's.
Totally agree with Gene Simmons comparison between EVH and YM. EVH has structure, good phrasing and melody. YM, Steve Vai, Satriani and a bazillion of other shredders are just playing fast and without any phrasing. Just to impress.
If you're a seasoned guitar player you will know what I mean. If not, like a beginner or shitty player you will think Ace, Slash etc. are great players!
To all the non guitar players/beginners listen to some Gary Moore and Michael Schenker. Those are great players like EVH. Not Ace.....Slash.....etc.
At his age and given his experience, I can't picture Ace being baited into that comment, but I'd say it wasn't necessary to say that about Eddie and doesn't look good on him... If that in fact is what he said... But different skill levels and taste comes into play. As weird as that is to me, some hard rock fans may not feel Eddie and Yngwie. It's the beauty of the versatility of the instrument.
Every GREAT guitarist has their own style...and while you may not LIKE their style...as a musician and fellow guitarist you SHOULD be able to recognize and APPRECIATE their TALENT ! After all to me THAT SIGNATURE SOUND is what MAKES a great guitarist GREAT ! I LOVE George Lynch because he doesn't SOUND like anyone else ! I love the 2 ORIGINAL guitarist's from Queensryche and Ratt and Nght Ranger and Priest and Maiden. ALL of them are extremely talented and have their own sound. Ace is just a bitter, old man !
A good example is Joe Satriani...a tremendous player...but I don't care a lot for his "genre"! Same with the late, great Stevie Ray Vaughn...didn't care for his genre....but are there very many guitarists in his class ?

I love Ace, I'm a KISS fan..I was never a huge VH fan...but great is great and Eddie was great ! I feel sorry for Ace...looks to me that he's just a bitter old man taking shots at everyone ! He's taken cheap shots at Tommy Thayer and other former KISS Guitarists. What's sad is he wants to blame everyone but himself for missing out on all those years of making big $$$ with KISS when the fact is you did it to yourself Ace !

I was a fan of Eddie and Ace, when I was young... still am. But when I first picked up a guitar I dreamed of playing like Eddie... some day. The cool thing about Ace was that I could play KISS songs not long after I first picked up a guitar. They were great songs still.
Never on your wildest of assumptions could Ace ever be considered to be within earshot of Eddie Van . Just not something that comes up in the goat guitar world.
The first month after picking up a guitar I could play any and every Kiss song Ace recorded. Its 40 years since then and I cant play more than half of any song EVH ever wrote. God knows I've tried. Ed is the G.O.A.T. Ace is a goat. Bah baaah.
Personally I don't believe Edward's solos were just technical speed to the preclusion of melody ....I can sing right here now the melodies to the slow solos in 'Running With The Devil',,,'Aint talking About Love',,,,'Hear About it later',,,'Push Comes to Shove' etc....With Yngwie I can remember the slow melody at the beginning of 'Like an Angel' .....Michael Schenker would ALWAYS emphasize to play a lot of melody even at speed.....I dunno if I can remember too many melodies of Ace's solos to be honest... The two songs Kiss wrote which were unforgettable rock anthems with melody were 'Rock 'n Roll all Nite' and 'Shout it out Loud'.

Its about what soloing style is most appropriate for a particular song or band. Aces style worked for Kiss, Eddies style worked for VH. Apples and Oranges.
I don't about that, Edward and Alex Van Halen did the Demo of Christine Sixteen and it was Ed's solo that Ace copied note for note.

Malmsteen was very melodic on Rising force and had epic phrasing. One of the great players IMO. His solos on Now is the Time and Deja Vu are brilliant. Bedroom Eyes too.

Ace I'm a huge fan, but... You shouldn't have touched this subject. While EVH (Rest Easy man) may not have invented the electric guitar, He damn sure Reinvented it. Too many guitarist's too count learn to play because of that man. There will never be another like him..

I love Ace and have always been a fan of his style. He influenced millions of kids to play the guitar. That being said, I think Ace should take a look at some of his recent shows. Eddie was an absolute game changer and probably the most influential guitarist ever next to Hendrix. Ace created some very memorable guitar solos and wrote some good songs however, Eddie was light-years beyond Ace. Ace should quit bashing other guitarists and practice his own playing more.

Ace's wig is sewn on a little too tight. I'd seen his band open for Alice Cooper a few years ago. Ace's solo was the absolute worst I'd ever witnessed from a "professional" musician. There are beginner guitarists who could play a more coherent and musical solo. Ace's playing fit well with KISS in the 70s. His skills have diminished while his ego soars.

He is an average guitarist who played with a mediocre band in the 70's that. needed make up and gimmicks and a marketing team to make it big.
