Raging alcoholics and drug addicts are results of even worse victimizers almost always. Most people if you treat them decent, good or great, then they do the same to you. Mess with people enough and they get upset and mess with you back. Mix in enough harassment to get people angry when sober, drunk or high and you're the source of a chain of stupid events and it can come back to haunt you.
Couldn't have said it better. Loved Eddie growing up and being a guitar player myself we sometimes live in a false sense of reality that those who impacted our lives can do no wrong. Appreciate your comment and may Eddie Van Halen RIP.
What EVH and AVH did to Michael Anthony is right up there with what Coverdale did to Sykes. In my book, worse, because of the history, contribution, & longtime success VH had. Anthony was family. EVH went to his grave without ever apologizing or trying to reconcile with Anthony. Think about that. What did Anthony ever do to EVH? Nothing, except give him a lifetime of loyalty and hard work.
@2216sammy Oh ...I see. So because Michael Anthony decided to leave that erases the fact that he was treated like Sh*T?? What would you do if you were at a place where you are being treated like crap? Stick around?? LMAO!!! 😆😆😆

When you are a slave to drinking and drugs, you destroy everyone around. Geddy Lee of Rush is the most professional, gracious, and generous men I ever had the pleasure to meet. Sorry to hear he was so mistreated. Truly a case of 1st class meeting low class.
Rush early on in their career decided to split everything equally to avoid any rancour and to enable each member to feel valued. That loyalty to each other remained and remains rock solid even after Neil Peart’s death. They are the antithesis of EVH
Rush offering to share their booze rather than avoid conflict (and then Geddy Lee trying to approach EVH to make amends for something THE LATTER did) has to be the most stereotypically Canadian thing ever.

I remember after DLR split from VH, Eddie said “Dave Lee Roth is an asshole”; and in a characteristically sarcastic and understated retort, DLR said “Some people are never happy unless they’re unhappy” lol
MAAAN! Randy Rhoads didn't need to learn anything from Eddie Van Halen, he grew up in an incredible musical household and while he did probably do some similar things with Eddie like tapping and whammy-bar theatrics, there was a classical composition structural quality to Rhoads playing and his songwriting on the Ozzy albums he worked on that IMHO are unmatched today. So many parts of that album like the guitar comping part of Over The Mountain and so many other things give me shivers down my spine. Had Randy Rhoads lived, I have no doubt he'd have had a powerful and wide ranging impact on music as a performer/songwriter and perhaps even producing other artists and film score composer.
Agreed, they both have talent to be sure, but they are not comparable. Eddie showed off, Randy weaved a tale with his every riff and solo. I cannot even begin to imagine what Randy Rhoades could've created if he hadn't taken up that damn plane ride.

Eddie was a guy who made it at a pretty early age, and never had to grow up emotionally. His foray into hard drugs will always stain his legacy. He was known for treating people around him real bad...ask Michael Anthony, Sammy Hagar, and Rush band members, and many others.
I read that he studied classical guitar, so he had the formal musical instructions early on as a kid. Those "riffs" he played are quite common in classical guitar playing. Understandably many non-musicians would not know this fact and you can search and find many classical guitarists in YT, that play just as well as EVH. Those "riffs" are status-quo in their field of playing. And I agree, he never had to grow-up emotionally. I have seen this in other industries when the "kid" took over his dad's business. They never had to struggle and learn.
Many in this profession are. They all have dope dealers everywhere they go. The entertainment business is not exactly a holy business. It's lawyers, accountants, dirty groupies and A LOT of drugs
Alcohol was his main addiction with everything else following. I read that he used cocaine as a song writing tool to keep going. One isn’t any better than the other of course.
Yeah, he was a big drunk. That was one of the number 1 things. Of course, all the others went along with it, but he was mostly a drunk but I still love him.
Randy was obviously a much nicer person than Eddie. If he had lived and Eddie had passed at a young age, Randy would have been a much better role model than Eddie for sure.
There is NO QUESTION about that! Randy was a polite, humble human being, raised by a wonderful mother, Delores Rhoads...and he was one helluva KICK ASS guitarist.🎸🔥 RIP RR 🙏
Yes Randy seemed like a really cool guy and a very Humble virtuoso! Even being as talented and solid as he was as an all around guitar player and lead player....I read in many interviews done with Randy that practically every town he was touring around the world...He paid guitar teachers and other guitarist for lessons from them. Because even though he was truly AWESOME...he never acted like he was better than anyone and always strived to learn new things from others to improve himself!
I've always preffered Randy to Eddie, even though they were both very impressive. Never got the chance to see Randy live but when I saw Van Halen I was greatly dissapointed by the entire performance. It's possible I caught them on an off night. Sammy could'nt hit the high notes (not even close) and Eddie was basically rambling on guitar. It was weird.
Very true. Eddie had a double standard. If Dave or Mike wanted to do a side project with others. he'd have a fit and talk about "loyalty" tot he band...YET...he did "Beat it" for Michael Jackson, and some other side projects, including a movie soundtrack. The way he did Mike Anthony. was pretty disgusting. That guy was a brother....he was there from the word GO. There were signs that he had figured that out by the time of the plane crash.
One thing people don’t really know about Eddie is he didn’t really listen to others music. He was also fairly sheltered after they became famous. But I get it. I mean Ged pretty much only looks like Ged 😅
Eddie never claimed he taught Randy Rhoads. He said "Everything he learned, (meaning the tricks Eddie did on guitar) he learned from me." Randy had students who wanted to play Van Halen songs so Randy had to learn the songs in order to teach his students. One thing this video left out is the fact that Eddie never offered condolences to Michael Anthony when his infant grandson passed away. If you've seen the video of Sammy and Mike that was made right after Eddie died, you can see Mike doesn't look saddened. Who could blame him?
I'm no fan of Durst but unless the recanting of this tale is incomplete, how does Eddie's leaving his gear at Durst's place constitute wrongdoing on Dursts part? I would never up and leave my rig at someones place who I don't know that well.
Given the quality of this videos information, you can rest assure that the "tale is incomplete" or perhaps close to complete fabrication. I think they were supposedly jamming together and had a blow up but EVH leaving his guitar behind sounds dubious, tbh.
Y'all can hate me if you want but I honestly believe that if Randy Rhodes had as long of a career as Eddie Randy might be considered the best. He was trained as a classical guitarist and you can hear it in his work with Ozzy. As a guitarist shredding is not as important as creating emotions through unique sound through the different modes. Randy was great at it.
A lot of people, millions agree with you. Some think he was better already. The only issue would have been when Randy quit Blizzard of ozz, to do other things...how would that have played out./ Ranhdy was so melodic and more learned. on guitar
Ahhhh a Roth disliker…..because after Ed got sober, and got his hand and firearm repaired due to bone spurs and tendon issues, he played amazingly on the last tour especially. Roth….yeah his vocals left fans wanting better maybe, but when he first committed to the reunion he was trying to really be the singer of old, but Ed wasn’t in a good place. Chemistry was undeniable, but the last tour was only Roth who wasn’t quite on point. Ed…he played so good. Imho. Rock on!

This is why as a musician myself and a guitar player, I have little to no respect for Eddie Van Halen. His fame and fortune when straight to his head. To me the way he done Michael Anthony, Sammy Hagar, and Randy Rhods is unforgivable in my book. Sammy had much, much more talent and experience than Eddie and could give Eddie all he wanted on a guitar as well. Randy Rhodes was a trained and educated musican and every bit as good as Eddie on guitar as well. Maybe even better. If Randy had not died so young in that tragic accident, I strongly believe he would have surpassed Eddie on the guitar at some point. Eddie was good on guitar, but way over rated in my book...

Yeah Eddie thought the sun and the moon rose due to his playing and tried publicly to take credit for Rhodes and many other success in and around the Los Angeles music scene .in all honesty in the very early stages Rhoads was farther along as a musician than Ed due to his vast musical knowledge .Randy talents greatly exceeded his teachers and soon had amassed large number of young and older students himself that were seeking to learn to play the instrument .you can find recordings of both of them in the early 70s and Rhoads was a better player when both first formed bands as young teenagers .its true Eddie's playing had improved dramatically as the decade neared the mid to late point .Ed followed a more hard rock path while Randy was inspired by artists from the more commercial and mainstream rock like David Bowie and others .but Rhoads after moving to the Uk was cast with older more seasoned an accomplished musicians in Bob Daisley .Lee Kerslake and others he started paying a lot of attention to for the first time .this is when Rhoads improved drastically as a player and even more as a songwriter and composer .Eddie was jealous of the Attention Rhoads had started getting and couldn't help but lash out due to his overinflatted ego
I'm kind of sorry that I watched this. I had such high esteem for Eddie. Now I realize he was just like most of the others when it came to greed and crapping on people Sammy and Micheal Anthony are the real class acts of this clown show.

Are you KIDDING?! The original Deal was that they all got 25%. @@dalestroup9495 the way they worked, Eddie had the whole song worked out before he called Dave/Sammy and Michael into the studio to record their stuff, he had a finished demo and sometimes, like with Fair Warning, Eddie had an entire album finished when he called Dave and Mike in. Thank you for this. I've been pushing back against what I've come to think of as the Cult of Van Halen for years. A lot of people seem to think that if you're great at the guitar, it means you are somehow more than human and above reproach with regards to any of your bad behaviors, and even that somehow you can do no wrong, or that you must be some kind of saint in every aspect of your life. EVH was a complicated human being. For certain a lot of people talk about how good he could be to them. A lot of those same people also talk about how awful he could become, and how suddenly. He was actually very talkative at the different stages of his life, whether strung out on meth or coke, or even when sober, and left behind a very public record of bad behaviors, harmful words directed at others, and proof positive of a titanic ego that could make him very condescending, selfish and disrespectful at times. He was in every way a classic vulnerable narcissist. He was a helluva talent, to be sure, but he was a human being and often did not live up to his potential and hype. More to the point, as good and as much an innovator as he was, he still borrowed ideas from others, and being human, was copyable and even able to be bettered by other players. Yet his cult can be so toxic that they are willing to throw a punch to defend him (a very real threat if you were critical of him during the time I grew up), and many of them refused to believe that Eddie's son Wolfgang could play so much like him at the Taylor Hawkins benefit, to the point where they accused him of faking it to a backing track and even threatened him - and each other - online. There's a real danger in forgetting that our favorite celebrities are really just people. We can see the effects of toxic celebrity every day in our politics now.

A lot of blame falls on Jan Van Halen --- he started his sons Eddie and Alex on the path towards alcohol and nicotine addiction --- just a lousy father overall
Yeah, supposedly EVH (when still in his early teens) asked his father how to deal with nerves before the show and his dad told him to get loaded...always worked for Jan. Also, remember, Jan was European and they have a bit different way of looking at early drinking, or did at that time. I don't know if that makes you a lousy father but certainly a iffy role model.

I wish they'd stop associating Randy with Eddie , they were polar opposites in their approach to the guitar . Eddie wanted to be a rock star , Randy wanted to move on after he tasted the life .
It doesn’t surprise me to hear any of this. Everyone says that David Lee Roth was the villain of Van Halen, but it was really Eddie and Alex all along. Yes David was a huge force of personality, and I think that’s why everyone sided with Eddie during the first breakup. But Van Halen fell apart because of the Van Halen’s control freak nature, they were essentially dictators. If you look at all three breakups, they all share one common denominator: Eddie Van Halen. I believe that all three singers were fired because they pushed back against the Van Halen’s grab of power. I believe that’s why Van Halen III failed, because Eddie fired both Gary Cherone and their producer Mike Post mid way through production. And from what I understand, most of the bass parts of the album were from Eddie, which may explain why Anthony’s bass and vocals could barely be heard at all. Eddie and Alex were douchebags.

Raging alcoholics and drug addicts are results of even worse victimizers almost always. Most people if you treat them decent, good or great, then they do the same to you. That's such typical thinking of people who've never burned trees before.
Are you honestly implying that Ed Van Halen hadn't smoked weed before? I'm not defending all the stuff Ed did or didn't do, but his negative attitude about marijuana was absolutely not based on a lack of experience with it.
@@davenathan5347 I quit drinking and everything else just to burn my original favorite! Speaking of which, the natives are smiling and passing along a sample of their yield now...!!!
i love the absolutely meaningless raw dogging of fred durst in this vid lmao
Eddie rubbed everyone wrong, eventually.
And rubbed himself outta life
I think Eddie was jealous of Randy Rhoads. Rhoads was awesome and Ed knew it.
Most Rock bands have little respect for the bass player in general.
The guitar player, lead singer and drummer get all the praise.
In Prog and Fusion they get more respect and elevation.
It's not just rock bands. Orchestras sort of have a running joke about the expendability of the bass section of the strings. It's a real thing.
I knew 2 people that met him. One loved him, the other was a Peavey dealer that refused to have any VanHalen stuff in his store.
I met him, backstage in Houston in '86. We were the Kramer dealer, and gave away a guitar to be handed off by EVH. I spent almost the entire time (maybe 15 minutes) talking to Mike, what a great guy. Eddie was about the most obnoxious, mean, insufferable a$$hole I ever met. Everybody with us walked in revering him, and leaving despising him. I didn't know about the substance abuse at the time.
What he did to Michael Anthony was one of the lowest things he ever did.
It was, but I wonder why Mike just kept agreeing to all that stuff. He would have been better off to tell Eddie to kiss his ass and going to another band where he was treated fairly. 🤔
I feel bad for Valerie Bertinelli. One of my crushes as a little kid.
Yep, One Day At A Time cutie.
I don't. Both she and Ed married other people. After Ed died, she acted like neither of them existed and went all over interview shows like she hadn't been divorced for like 20 years.
@@scottm8579 That's still on her. Everyone knows staying to "fix" someone is a fool's errand. Anyone I've known who's in recovery said you have to do it for you, not because someone else is staying around.
@@Scott__C I think she had a few habits of her own also.
Valerie is an attention whore
I have met, and hung out with Mikey...far away from any of the fame and money.
He is a genuinely, super good guy.
Not once, have he and I talked about his career.
We have had times, talking about boating, and
cars... or just the subjects of the day.
Kind and friendly guy, who appreciates his success, but doesn't even mention it.
That's not really true though, while Michael Anthony is a very good guy, it was never fair for him to have 25% of the royalties when he never wrote a song for Van Halen
And Sammy, well if we're talking about egoes and greed then Sammy is no saint
Are you KIDDING?! The original Deal was that they all got 25%.
Mike did help write songs adding his creative bass lines and high singing harmonies...I'm sure he had input to Eds writing...ideas bouncing off from others helped them write songs!
So by your reasoning Alex shouldn't get paid much either because he was a drummer! Man never played a musical note anywhere! Well?
Maybe you should stick to selling fruit... because you are obviously Bananas! Lol
@@dalestroup9495 the way they worked, Eddie had the whole song worked out before he called Dave/Sammy and Michael into the studio to record their stuff, he had a finished demo and sometimes, like with Fair Warning, Eddie had an entire album finished when he called Dave and Mike in.
Your reasoning with Alex is sound, however Alex was most often in the studio with Ed when he developed the songs, neither of which Mike or Sammy were, with exceptions of course.
This isn’t an outlandish way of working, Pete Townsend of the Who did the same thing, and he even sang the songs as well to show Roger Daltrey what he wanted.
@@dalestroup9495 I agree with you on that Michael Anthony’s harmonies were an essential part of Van Halen’s sound, so he should absolutely get credit. I just do not believe he should get the same cut as Eddie.
I always found it funny that Eddie had a problem with weed while being addicted to meth.
A friend of mine worked for Limp Bizkit when this happened, and Eddie showed up with a crowbar and an Uzi. After that, we called him Uzi Van Halen. lol
Randy Roads could play Eddie under the table, plain and simple.
100% False
Eddie's Glory Days was over 28 years ago..
Thought it was 40 years ago.
Mike Anthony was treated like Roger Waters treated Rick Wright...
An integral part of the band relegated to a "hired gun" status.
I am glad Michael is with sammy hagar because they are the best of friends. Michael has an amazing voice as well that sammy Said his background vocals were second to none.
Eddie Van Halen was my most favorite guitarist of all-time, my music hero, but after totally knowing what they did to Michael Anthony, my admiration to this guy just plummeted.
As big a band as they were, they squandered a lot of their prime with all the in fighting, line up changes and of course the drug use.
You've got to get that partying in while you can. Because it don't last forever.
EVH was very threatened by RR. Randy was a much, much better composer and player.
Randy who?
A lot of blame falls on Jan Van Halen --- he started his sons Eddie and Alex on the path towards alcohol and nicotine addiction --- just a lousy father overall
Yeah, supposedly EVH (when still in his early teens) asked his father how to deal with nerves before the show and his dad told him to get loaded...always worked for Jan. Also, remember, Jan was European and they have a bit different way of looking at early drinking, or did at that time. I don't know if that makes you a lousy father but certainly a iffy role model.
@@cbotten106 According to Alex's book, drinking was a typical thing that they did. And it wasn't just Eddie, Alex and Jan either. When they'd meet up with other Van Halen family members, they'd all be drinking and smoking because, at the time, it was the social thing to do.
Anthony’s contributions to Van Halen were massive.
As a 80's teen, after Dave left the band VH never had that same charisma I guess you could say to me anyways.. Jmo.
Dave was Van Halen. Eddie and Sammy could only produce bubble gum love rock songs.
The best party band of all time became soccer mom "rock".
I liked it at first, because I liked Sammy's solo stuff and it was new for them. But to me, a lot of the songs don't hold up over time.
I dunno, I liked VH back in the day I guess. Eddie wasnt near the guitarist Rhodes was. Sure he had fast fingers and could string a note casserole together, but as a pure rock guitarist, Rhodes ALL the way!
Rhoads. Randy Rhoads.
agree
EVH was an condescending egotistical narcissist doink, who thought his poop smelled like roses, but He forever changed rock guitar and we all know it. Loved Rhoads too. BUT...take the tone on VH1 and compare it to blizzard of oz. Randy's tone to eddie's was like comparing a kazoo to a nuke.
And Randy's guitars were cooler.
The 80s was such a unique time
Back then a lead guitarist could be as or more famous than the singer
Name a guitarist in music from a band formed in the last 5 years

The rock era is over though.
@@alukuhito I know. Now it’s the make every song sound the same with someone else singing terribly over it adjusted by auto tune
@@alukuhito my point is the music industry has evolved away from the musician and now only focuses on the vocalist

They say never meet your heroes.
They say that but I must say that I met my hero, guitarist Steve Morse, and he was the sweetest, most gracious, interesting gentleman I've ever met. I interviewed him for the newspaper the music store I worked for at the time put out. He even gave me a guitar lesson (!!!!!), a box of his picks, and tickets for the show that night (front box). He walked in through the front door and called out a "hello" to me while the audience was waiting for the show to begin. There were 2 guys behind me that went nuts! lol
@@Lokisdottir1964Glad to hear it. That’s a cool story!
Geddy Lee breaks that rule
I remember when Van Halen broke up, and rumors were that Sammy Hagar was going to be the new singer. I remember that that was the weirdest thing and we all wondered what it would sound like, we could not picture it at all. Then we were shocked how good it sounded. Sammy Hagar was his own thing. It was weird for us to picture him in Van Halen when we were younger. David Lee Roth is still the goat of Van Halen if you ask me, but Sammy Hagar did great.
I still find it funny Eddie went crazy over limp bizkit smoking weed. When he was a literal drug addict back then.
According to Monk, Alex was the heavy dealing with Anthony . It was always Alex making the big hard decisions . This from the reading of Monks own book .
Nothing new here by any means . Remember what happened to Don Felder when he questioned the Dynamic Duo and wanted to see the books .
agreed.
I think Ed when he decided he needed the lion's share, then manipulated others like Al to do his bidding.
Yes, Felder got sqashed just like Randy Meisner. Henley and Frey were just as nasty as EVH!
When Ozzy tells a story no matter how insane it was its always the truth
I would never respect those two disgusting brothers for what they did to Michael Anthony. That's why they had the karma they did. I'd never have anything to do with them again and Sammy Hagar respects Anthony for his persistent Loyalty.
R.I.P. King Edward 👑👑🎸🎸❤❤
.grow up lady, Mike is worth $50 million thanks to the Van Halen bros..lol you'll get over it kid,, mike did...
When you write all the songs, melody , and play the instruments and are the creative force. Michael is a humble guy but never really contributed except with some harmies and the VH harmonies aren't that good. Eddie had mental issues but his genius is undeniable
I love Eddies early VH albums and it looks like he help to raise a good kid.
Other than that, he seemed like a real peice of work.
Team Diamond Dave.
What surprises me is that Eddie Van Halen had a semi automatic pistol at 7:54 which suddenly turned into a revolver at 8:10. 🤔
He likely had an arsenal, alcohol and coke, are a recipe for paranoia. Plus, he was always rolling in mega-buck autos. He could have pulled the Uzi out of the boot but figured a pistol would be sufficient for an equipment pickup.
@@cbotten106
I was just being a smartass with this comment. He probably did have an arsenal. I know I would if I had that kind of money and I’m not even paranoid but this was some kind of magic gun that changed into another gun while he was holding it. I’m sure it was stock footage and they didn’t bother to check continuity because no way he went there with a cameraman.
Eddie and his brother Bullied and Hurt many unfairly through the bands time. Michael Anthony was the most unfairly treated and cheated by the brothers.
It’s a business man. If you owned a company, and did most of the work while your partner did very little while making the same amount of money, what would you do? Mike has millions, so to say he was cheated might be going a bit too far.
i'd take MA's millions over being the great narcisist EVH any day.
