I have a really fun idea you could maybe do for your rat cage. I was thinking you could put a cardboard hide underneath the bedding in your dig box, and connect a tunnel to it going up. So it could make a cute little like den thing. You could even cut out one of the sides and put the open part against the glass wall in your dig box, this would allow you to see if anyone is sleeping inside. :D

why dont they have proper substrate the one you use is for littler trays

There is no problem using pelleted bedding as a main bedding - its great for odor control and urine absorbtion, and while it can't be burrowed in I have a whole giant dig box with crinkled paper bedding that can be easily burrowed in exactly for that purpose.
My lower group does not have a dig box due to the near 3 year old girl having HLD and not being able to hop in and out of a dig box (which is a hazard), so instead they have crinkled paper layered over the pelleted bedding so that the rats can nest with it still while being safe for my old girl.
There is no one way to make a good rat cage, and my rats have all done great with this bedding so I will continue to use it.
