In this video we try out an upgraded Ambassador Class that was put into service 6 months after the loss of the USS Enterprise C.
It's equipped with additional Phasers and Torpedoes!
First of all we're going to put it up against a Romulan Warbird and then an Original Galaxy Class!

The Ambassador should have played a large role in the Dominion War. It was still one of Starfleet's larger ships by 2373 and there should have been plenty of room to install more reactors, shield generators and phaser emplacements. If it was given a proper War refit in 2372-73, it would have a full dorsal and ventral Type X phaser arrays, additional arrays and probably newer torpedo launchers. Armor plate could be applied, and new adaptive shields installed. With upgrades, it could have served well as Heavy Cruisers and been more or less on par with the Nebula Class Tactical Variants. Very useful for combatting the cruiser elements of the Dominion Fleet as it would be easily superior to a single Galor Class cruiser and a good match for the Keldon. They would make excellent cruiser squadron flagships; say 3-4 Excelsior Class light cruisers with an Ambassador. Or two Ambassadors with 3-4 Intrepids.
One thing that I've read in a couple places is that there weren't many Ambassadors, because they were a bit of an in-between on the tech tree and hosted a lot of experimental technology (so the Excelsior was easier to retrofit).
I've had this idea floating around in my head of Ambassador classes acting more as their namesake during the Dominion war - transporting Ambassadors, doing first contact/Enterprise level quests/defense/etc while the rest of the fleet is engaged in fleet formations. This is a pitch I've been working on in my headcanon for a while, but I could imagine an Ambassador with a 4-6 Defiants (acting as actual escorts) transporting newly graduated Academy officers and troops from Earth/the inner Federation to DS9 and other stations/planets near the front. One of the ideas I had was that each ship in the group would have a number of senior officers/instructors and then the former cadets would get experience working hands on on ship stations (even maybe working on large scale engineering projects to retrofit) and get in practice drills in fleet formations. Defiants are notoriously uncomfortable, so the Ambassador as a capital ship could act as a bit of a space station where the crews could hot seat swap for rotations.

It's nice to see a beefier version of one of my favorite ships. The vanilla version was such a disappointment.
I really liked the Probert variant, needs a tweek or two with the impulse engines, but other than that it's my favorite.
The Ambassador class to me is like a Budget Galaxy Class

I like this idea a lot. It makes sense in universe after what happened to the Enterprise C at Narendra III. Would like to see a Defiant War era refit with quantum torpedoes. I don’t know if this is true but I heard that the Ambassador class was the first Federation starship with phaser strips instead of cannons or turrets 🖖
Correct on the phaser strips. And it had 15 of them originally.

Hey Retro-Badger :) I really like you video of the Ambassador class, the torpedo volley is quite impressive. Just a bit of info for you, the phaser placement on this Ambassador class that you are showing, is the exact same placement as on all the models that have been made of the ship. Although it is missing the belly phaser, if you go online and look up the Ambassador class schematics, you can see the belly phaser on the ship, and the phaser placement is the same as your model you are showing. Also if you watch the episode TNG yesterday's Enterprise, you can see the same phaser placement as well as the belly phaser on the Enterprise C in the show. Another way to see the ship as well is to go on the game Star Trek Online. I hope this helps :) take care.
Makes me wonder if having a rapid-fire torpedo launcher becomes progressively more difficult the larger vessel is and the larger the shield bubble. Perhaps this problem was partially solved in the Enterprise-E by designing a smaller and more oblong shape for the ship and by extension the shield bubble. Perhaps that's why future designs either went mostly for larger torpedo yields like quantums at a slower fire rate or went for smaller torpedo designs which would be launched more rapidly. Both of those would cause less distortion when passing through the shields than a rapid fire of medium sized projectiles.
I think it looks great. And that torpedoe volley is very satisfying. After moping the floor with that warbird, i figured the galaxy was going down lol. Beverley crusher must have been at tactical 😅🖖

It's hard to believe that an ambassador class could defeat, a D'deridex class warbird.

Imagine being a smug Romulan captain coming out of the Neutral Zone into Federation space, saying "We are back" and making a big show... and then you get wasted by any old Ambassador class cruiser that would have been floating around in the 2360s. Man, that would _have_ to sting! xD
The Ambassador Class should have been in the Dominion War armed with updated phasers and quantum torpedoes.

Great battle against the Warbird! I think I have to shift my 'favorite ship in all of Star Trek' designation from the Ambassador class to this Ambassador refit. Love it!
I don't count any more phasers then there were on the original ambassador class model from the show.
Considering that the Ent-D in Yesterday's Enterprise is a dedicated war refit version of the Galaxy class, it would have a lot of things in it to defend a planet. What Picard should had done is transfer some of those assets like torpedoes that home in on certain gases like Romulans' Plasma Torpedo Launcher, planetary defense satellites, stealth/cloaked mines, Klingon cloaking device, etc. Overall the point is to keep the Romulans occupied to target other things so that the Ent-C can be given extra time for the Klingon reinforcements to arrive. As soon as the Ent-C emerged from the temporal rift, it should had launched those extra weapons that can assist it in engaging the Romulans. Also the most important part is that Ent-C has an audience to witness its heroism&sacrifice. Those defense satellites and probes could be broadcasting the entire battle to the rest of the sector and that will give the Ent-C a lot of diplomatic credit for the Federation.

This was awesome, good to see the Ambassador get some love!! You're right though, we never did see them during the Dominion War but what a platform they would have made with a few upgrades.
Just remember that we needed history to remain intact so that we could get Commander Sela in the 24th century. She's one of my favorite TNG villains.

The Ambassador-class would've been a fantastic battlecruiser in the Dominion War.
I love the ambassador class. Takes second to the Constitution refits. That actually looks like it has the right amount of phaser emitters. The later ambassador had saucer phaser strips around inner circumference of saucer like Galaxy class. Go back and look at YE and other publication afterwards. 5 Dorsal saucer, 3 ventral saucer, ventral engineering hull, at outside corners of each pylon, and 2 dorsal and 2 ventral phaser emitters around shuttle bay opening. They were trying to build a tank of a starship that could serve as a temporary star base. It was a failure, but it was built like a tank. Thats a series I'd love to see
The main differences between this and Canon ambassador looks like different nacelles, shrouded bussard collectors nacelles mounts for forward, hull color, the shields and hull seem weaker than your previous model... But that torpedo barrage is just impressive.

I definitely have preferred the Ambassador Class refit compared to the original way. I'm sure that they were used in the Dominion War. Agreed the extra phasers were better.
That forward torpedo launch is a bit insane. But an improved Ambassador class would be very effective against Galors/Keldons in the Domion War!

A cool video, but I was thinking you were redoing/reenacting the battle over Narendra III, the Enterprise C alone against several Romulan Warbirds starships.
Extra phasers? All ambassador Class's had the same amount. Well except the Probert variant. And originally, the studio diagram of the Enterprise C had a phaser strip at the bottom of the secondary hull. But it never made it to the studio model.

I am surprise for being a war refit it doesn't carry any quantum torpedo whereas the Excelsior-class refit does.
As far as we know Lakota was a one-off.
The season 1 galaxy class was a glass cannon. That ambassador should have mowed it down

I don't know where in the Trek timeline the Ambassador ship model was dropped and broken, but that might be why none of these made it into the Dominion War.
Not sure if it's urban legend or not, but I read that the Lakota was supposed to be an Ambassador, but the model had been severely damaged when dropped, so they used the Excelsior model. An updated Ambassador would've made a lot more sense vs. the Defiant than an Excelsior did, but they worked with that they had, apparently 🤷♀
Imo the Excelsior made sense as it is so much larger than the Defiant, so one uprated with cutting edge tech should be able to go against it.

But I'm not complaining, because the Excelsior class is a beautiful ship.
Even ST:Online doesn't want to let the Excelsior go - the Lakota is part of missions in 2409 - or at least is present in scenes.
It was dropped in 2006, so well after it was needed. But, you are correct insofar as the filming models were deemed unusable for Generations and evidently a CGI model was DS9 battles was never made.

Since the Ambassador was only used in TNG, the Excelsior model would've been the better model, as it was a movie model. That makes sense.
