    Akira vs. Season 1 TNG Galaxy class I can see it working out this way, but during the Dominion War? I find it hard to believe the Akira's a stronger ship than a refit Galaxy.

      it definately is more powerful. While the Galaxy has more Phaser Banks, it still has the old style Torpedo tubes, that can deliver a heavy punch of 10 torpedoes a volley, but due to the fact that it uses magazines with 5 Torpedoes each on only 2 launchers it has an abyssmal reload. While the Akira on the other hand has fast loading Launchers that can only fire a single torpedo at a time, but it has 15!!! of them with a quick reload. The Shields are comparable. This gives the Akira the edge in a 1v1 engagement. In addition to that the non magazine Launchers can launch quantum torpedoes making the engagement even more one sided. In comparision, the Akira uses the exact same torpedo launchers the sovereign does, but the Sovereign only has 5 of them, while the Akira (with the torpedo pod, the only one we ever see in the show) has 3 times the amount. The Sovereign does use a lot of Type XII Phasers to compensate but even then the Akira outperforms the Sovereign in terms of Damage output. The Sovereign Refit does put them on par, but then again we do not see a Akira refit ever in the shows or movies, even though that would be overdue by the time the sovereign got a refit.
      The Problem is that when talking about the Akira you are talking about two different ship classes. The First Contact Akira, the ~450m Juggernaut which in terms of volume is actually only 9% smaller than the Sovereign. Or the DS9/VOY Akira, which ws only 250m long and therefore much weaker. This happened because when paramount got the digital files fromm ILM they missized the ship. So the is no real canon Akira. The ILM Akira is a beast and the federation ship with the most firepower at it's time. The Paramount Akira, is much smaller, but still deemed very powerful, since it is tasked to take on 3 Warbirds in "Message in a Bottle" while two defiants were meant to deal with the Prometheus. Assuming from that, the Akira can easily deal with a refit Galax, that would be outperformed by 3 D'deridex.
      Depending on the canon Alpha/Beta, the Akira may not have been meant to be a warship, but it very much turned out that way. The Beta canon development history of the Akira is actually quite interesting.

    • @Jarsia
      @Jarsia 10 місяців тому +5

      I guess it depends. If we take the DS9 tech manual, they have basically the same warp core output, but with fewer phasers, 2/3 the tonnage, and a much smaller hull(and consequently a smaller shield bubble), the Akira may indeed have more of it's total power available for shields, needing less for propulsion and phasers. Add to that those stronger shields spread over a smaller area, the Akira could be quite tanky.

      You do have to take into account that Badger was being nice and not using quantum torpedoes. As strong as the Galaxy were I don't really see one surviving a volley of those unscathed. The Akira being a post Wolf 359 ship might just be able to tank the opening volley, while the Akira's opening volley would almost certainly cripple the lighter shielded and armored Galaxy, knocking one out of the fight and making the Akira's job much easier.
      (Now if these were the Dominion War rifit Galaxy-class it would be a whole different story.)

    • @Euripides_Panz
      @Euripides_Panz 10 місяців тому

      40 would get the job done, alright. That's just the standard. You might even see command ships with additional launchers. Replacing three cargo bays, you could fit one aft ventral launcher with an armored port at the end of the tube with the launcher and magazine buried within the secondary hull. Two ventral cargo bays in the saucer module could be fitted with midship launchers. Of course, reworking the saucer aft launcher to fire between the rows of escape pods while docked would be the first order of business. Then, there's the matter of that Captain's yaht...
      Doubling launcher capabilities would be easy, but what wouldn't roll over after that many rounds? That excludes two to four additional phaser columns and a reinforced secondary hull after the loss of Odyssey that might support a couple phaser cannons around the deflector housing. A couple more cannons on the pylons wouldn't permit many opportunities for Jem'Hadar with delusions of glory.

    This video is proof that more is not always better. The Akira Class was designed to go up against a cube three kilometers across, meaning everything you fire at it can't possibly miss. Toe to toe in a dogfight with more traditional enemies, it's much more of a struggle. I'm guessing that for the Dominion War, either the targeting sensors were upgraded, or it was used primarily as a fleet buster.

      @@compmanio36 You're partially correct.
      Photon torpedo warheads are matter/antimatter devices. When they reach their target the matter (including remaining deuterium) and antimatter are allowed to interact, thus detonating.
      Prior to that the torpedo uses a deuterium reactor to provide both power to the antimatter containment, microfusion 'sustainer' propulsion systems & guidance systems. The deuterium fuel is finite so once it runs out the torpedo loses power, the containment field drops and the matter & antimatter mix, which detonates the torpedo automatically.
      I've seen some comments regarding the fragments from the self-detonation flying in all directions. It doesn't happen. Although he explosion is usually a smaller yield due to the lack of deuterium, it's large enough to vapourise the entire torpedo.
      It is now at this point that I realise I know FAR too much about Star Trek.

      @@KingCrab85 no the Akira was meant tonhave several mission pods, but only the torpedo pods entered service. The Akira was never meant to have civillians on board. That was the entire design idea, the threat of loss of civillians in a war scenario. This came about because of the conflict with the cardassians in 2347. Wolf 359 just increased the militarization of the vessel and made it enter service as before it was just a concept made by designers in their free time. It was meant to replace the excelsior and be multi mission but it ended up a Torpedo boat.
      In combat scenarios it should beat both the galaxy and the Sovereign, however it comes with drawbacks.
      The galaxy and Sovereign don't rely on torpedos that much, with their heavy energy based firepower they can go on long Missions, the Akira cannot it needs regular resupply of torpedos to keep being operational. The large hangar can be used as laboratories and so on, but due to it's resupply heavy defensive systems it isn't suited for long exploration missions.
      It was designed with only three phaser arrays, so it was never a deep space vessel. It is just to reliant on resupply. Yes the hangars can be used for ammo storage but it is a defensive ship in it's very nature, it needs supply lines. It cannot do what the Sovereign and galaxy can do, but it hits hard.
      The entire design is only really suited for missions close to bases. Well suited for defense and evacuations.... exploration not so much.
      Wait maybe ingot you wrong, are you talking about the galaxy. They couldnt fit the new launchers so that drawback stayed and became a Problem for the galaxy, the launchers are perfect for selfdefense in prolonged Engagements they aren't very good. It got additional phaser banks, but in star Trek energy weapons are close range and not as powerful as torpedoes. So the Galaxy did get additional phaser banks, great for ships way from any resupplies, but in a war scenario with supply lines it isn't optimal. The galaxy is a mobile starbase for deep space exploration, this design philosophy cannot be fixed with a refit. The galaxy is a powerhouse with it's first strike capacity, long stretched Engagements are it's weakness.

    • @dergrafvonzahl4734
      @dergrafvonzahl4734 10 місяців тому

      @@KingCrab85 in terms of mass the Akira is 2/3rd the size. It's a more compact design.
      But yeah the Galaxy was meant to be a mobile starbase. In terms of alpha strike potential it is actually really lethal. But in prolonged Engagements it is rather bad. Because it's weaponry is designed to defeat single threats. It also is more heavy on energy weapons that don't require resupply. Yes it is a deep space exploration vessel more like a mobile starbase. Ill-designed for war. The akira is a mire combat oriented design. Autonomy sacrificed for a way more lethal punch. But it needs supply lines.

  • @asvarien
    @asvarien 10 місяців тому

    Maybe Starfleet should have invested in alternative antimatter weaponry, alongside of torpedoes perhaps they should have researched anti-proton beam weapons. They obviously have the expertise to handle bulk anti-matter.
    Admittedly AP beams shouldn't be much good against shields, but against armour and hull you've got a "perfect" cutting beam that also causes additional radiation damage to ship and crew.

    Galaxy Class can throw 10 torpedoes per primary launcher. The Akira should have been on the edge against just one Galaxy, though I know many Galaxy mods don't allow the 10 torps per launcher to give other ships a chance.

    • @dergrafvonzahl4734
      @dergrafvonzahl4734 10 місяців тому

      It can fire 5-6 per Launcher, 10-12 in Total. The reload is terrible due to the magazine system. While the Akira has 13 Launchers that can fire in every direction and 2 additional launchers forward, and those are the quick reload ones, that can fire only one but with a fast reload, those launchers also are able to fire quantum torpedoes. Quantums have about 50% more damage output than Photons
      in terms of Torpedoes the Akira has the Galaxy beat easily. As long as the Akira stays out of Phaser range it's fine. Since it only has about three Type X arrays.

    What has always frustrated me about Star Trek starship battles is the complete lack of point defense weaponry against torpedoes. Photon torpedos are SLOW (yes I know range to target is a factor, but even at close range they are very slow). There is no reason why the technology doesn’t exist for point defense weapons to take out those torpedoes before they hit their target.

    Hmm leaning so heavily into torpedoes seems like a bit of a mistake. Once your limited supply runs out you're fairly helpless. A ship as small and agile as the Akira would have benefited from some heavy pulse phasers.

    Starfleet was confident enough in the Akira to assign only one to intercept any Romulan warships attempting to escort the captured U.S.S. Prometheus, with the two defiant-Class vessels present only working to recapture the prototype ship itself. The Akira engages two D'Deridex-Class starships, and while it doesn't score any kills it does manage to hold them off long enough to recapture the Prometheus and escape.

    Question: Ok so we saw in tng that the Enterprise d could fire 10 torpedos simultaneously in a full spread. If I remember correctly Voyager fired like 3 at once. If the Akira has 15 launchers can it theoretically fire multiple full spreads out of all or some of them? I mean come on, how bad ass would it have been in the Dominion war if a couple Akira classes fired a full spread of 10 torpedos out of all 15 launchers in one of the huge battles and took out like 10 or so Dominion and "Kim Cardasian" ships? Lol

    Dramatic narrator voice: "In three hundred years, smart projectile technology has regressed to the point that torpedoes literally have to be fired out of the side of the vessel facing the enemy, lest they just fly off into empty space."
    Jokes aside, it's funny seeing how Star Trek/STBC handles guided weapons versus the Expanse.

    A Galaxy Class is capital ship. 12 exawatts output. 2v1 Akira dies. Galaxy phaser firepower is insane. A 10% power setting it bored a 6' hole 2,000+ km down. That's just 10%

      A very very good question!

      This actually comes up twice in the entire franchise. In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, when Reliant swings around and fires a torpedo at Enterprise on her stern, Kirk immediately orders, "Sulu, divert all power to phasers!" Either Kirk was about to take a desperate gamble to try spraying phasers at Reliant or an even more desperate gamble to try shooting down the incoming torpedo.
      Why "even more desperate?" In the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Workforce," the Emergency Command Hologram fires a photon torpedo at a pair of incoming ships, angling the shot to pass between them. He then fires phasers at the torpedo, causing it to detonate in an explosive burst that temporarily disables both enemy ships and allows Voyager to escape.
      Assuming retroactive continuity anyway, which is always a risky gambit!

      There were some times shown, usually against inferior technology. It still isn't a perfect defense. Reading what people write about phasers with computers is like reading claims about the Iron Dome.
      The game, itself isn't capable of supporting, as far as I know.

    The torpedo guidance in this game is just awful! Hitting your target is a total crapshoot. Especially so if you fire more than 1 torpedo at once. Using the spread fire mode is almost always a bad idea.
