Oatmeal is a much loved comfort food for me. I used to eat rolled oats with butter, cream, & maple syrup. But no more... I use steel cut oats cooked for one hour, then added butter, cream, maple flavoring, and a few drops of monkfruit extract. Almost the same, satisfyingly good, but no debilitating spikes in sugar.

I only eat Organic Oatmeal on weekends (that is twice a week). Weeks days I skip breakfast. I think twice a week is not bad at all.

I feel like it would’ve been helpful if he informed everybody to the difference of a rolled oat vs a steel cut oat. A rolled oat is simply a steel cut oat smashed (rolled) flat.

You can save time by cooking oatmeal in the night. Boil water add oatmeal, cover the lid turn off the heat and go to bed. In the morning just heat up oatmeal and add milk. That's it.

I eat rolled oats almost every morning. In a sauce pan I put two cups of water, a handful of raisons, and a little bit of salt. When the water comes to a boil, I add 1/2 cup of oats. It is ready in about five minutes. I divide it into three portions. I cover two portions and put in the fridge. I put 3/4 cup of milk and sweeten it with honey. Then next morning I heat it for one minute. I have three servings of oat meal with only one preparation.

The thing that is going to make the most difference is not adding sugar/honey or milk/whey to the oats. If you need sweetness, add some berries or other fruit which have enough fiber to reduce the blood sugar spike. Also adding some nuts and ground flax seed has good blood sugar effects as well.

I love them both. I use an overnight recipe for steel cut oats and only need to stir and briefly heat the oatmeal the next morning. Honestly, it only take a little more effort than fast-cook rolled oats and I really like the texture and extra chewiness. On the other hand, what's not to like about rolled oats? I make them when I haven't had time to prep the steel cuts the night before.

I normally eat every morning rolled oats with blueberries, been doing this for a long time but, I was told by someone who knows about nutrition that, in my case, the Steel Cut oatmeal was better because of me being a diabectic (type 1-Insulin Dependent) You are right, I found the Steel Cut less filling than the regular oats...also, my glucose levels when up about the same but came back down quicker than the regular oats.

I’m not the original person, but yes. Typically with the GI index the glucose response these foods cause were measured in isolation to create the index, but we don’t usually eat foods in isolation (unless they’re fruits or nuts for example). Any high GI food becomes lower GI when mixed and eaten with lower GI foods or ingredients.

Dr Mike, I didn't know much about Rolled oats and I, however, only eat Steel oats. I greatly appreciate your noting the difference between the two oats. I will stick to my Steel oats -- it takes about 25-30 minutes to cook -- but it taste good and will maintain my blood sugar level. I top it off by adding blueberries, wheat germ, cinnamon and Almond milk to add fullness. Yummy!

This seems pointless to me. If you are going to do a study on oats, you don't put a bunch of milk and honey and whatever else in with it. What kind of scientists don't understand the idea of a control and maintaining as few variables as possible?
I'd also have to think that anyone who does science on this is economically invested, like they are an oat company, selling oats.
It seems to me that if you roll the oat you crushing it and letting oxygen into the whole oat, as well as damaging the internal structure of the kernel/seed which would cause it to spoil faster. On the other hand if you are cutting the oat, you are only disrupting the part of the kernel/seed that you cut, you have less surface area exposed to oxygen and still have the seed protection around the rest of the kernel.
I also have a problem with saying that anything that you boil for 15 minutes is devoid of nutrition, I don't think there is any scientific basis for saying that.

Most the information in the video did seems much more cumbersome when comparing oats. I probably couldn't offer the presentations of the preparations of oats compared that well. I think he did a great job. Althougg it did get kinda scary when he said 15 minutes cooking of some foods will destroy it's nutritional value. I'm a witness for sure... Although it's true, over cooking some foods will destroy it's nutritional value. Most interesting was the information on blood sugar levels. The studying of steel oats vs rolled oats health benefits were amazing to me. I've never tried steel oats, but I will in the future. Steel oats health benefits is something I should take advantage of in my nutritional diet intake.

Mixing the two 50/50 makes my perfect breakfast. Boiling it for two minutes the evening before and then leaving it to cool down and soak overnight, makes it ready to eat next morning. I like mine warm, so I heat it for to or three minutes. It gives me a porridge along with a nice bite. Smooth and not a workout for the jawmuscles. A little cinnamon makes it heavenly! Hope that helps.

This doesn't sound food safe to me... Wouldn't leaving it lukewarm overnight keep it in the danger zone to allow bacteria to grow? Anything left between 4 and 60 degrees for extended periods of time is not good.
Why don't you just do overnight oats instead. Soaking it in cold water or almond milk overnight in the fridge and then if you like it hot in the morning heat it up or you can eat it cold too. I usually put frozen fruit in it and by morning the frozen fruit is all good too.

In Ireland it's by no means axiomatic that you add milk and sweeteners etc. to porridge. I bring the right ratio of water to a boil, turn it way down to simmer, then add regular rolled oats because they're cheaper than steel cut, wait 10 minutes, remove from heat, wait a few minutes longer. No cows milk, almond milk etc. I have found that adding a tbsp. of flax meal and a berry like blueberries lowers the total gi of the meal, which works for me. i'm not even slightly hungry for the next 4 or 5 hours, which attests to healthy blood sugar levels. Good authoritative sensible video.

I read an article here in Britain stating that rolled oat processing just cracks the outer grain covering so slowing down the ingress of Oxygen preventing the Macro Nutrients in the whole grain from being Oxidised, Steel Cut Oats allows the Oxygen free range to Oxidise all the beneficial nutrients to be degraded more quickly. What are your thoughts on this matter?.

I like adding a few teaspoonfuls of rolled oats (uncooked) to a low carb shake several times a week.
Since they're uncooked, would be interesting to see what that does to the body.

I heat water in my kettle. Place 1 cup rolled oats in a 34 oz. Bubba Mug. Add water to cover, a pinch of salt, stir and place the lid on the mug. Let it sit for 12-15 minutes, remove lid and eat. I have been doing oats this way for years. I like them plain with nothing added.

I cook rolled oats for 15 minutes with milk. But the amount of milk should be the same in all examined cases. All porridges are great with milk, become smooth, less bitter. I usually take 1.5 parts water to 1 part milk with rolled oats. There could still be a difference with milk being cooked for longer with cut or whole grains. I don't really know what happens to it. Recipes usually call for the milk to be heated and added partway which is a hassle.

More milk in the rolled oats means more carbs, therefore explaining why it took longer for the glucose to return to baseline level compared to the steel cut oats. These UK scientists dont sound very professional

Well, yes that's definitely a flaw in the study. However, the fact that there is more fiber in the steel cut oats would suggest they would have less of an insulin response.

Aintnuttinnice _ I see young patients (your age) all the time bc they have lost blood flow due to their diets. I gave you sound advice so you would be educated and you laughed and insulted me when maybe you should shut your garbage trap and actually listen. Lots of cheeseburgers contain fat known as lipids. These lipids flow through your bloodstream including the vessels that supply blood to your penis . This isn't Bro Science, it's fact. So again, keep eating like that and see what happens. And if your wondering why you've never heard of this before it's because most guys don't sit around and talk about how they can only achieve 50, 60, 70% etc of the erection they used to. Did you consider that? How many people do you know who are on blood pressure medication? Guess what else their blood pressure can be effecting? I'm still helping you despite your character flaws bc your young and stupid. Don't be an arrogant prick! Or before you know it you'll have a soft prick!

2:02 I mean most people that eat oats as in oatmeal do inf act boil them so that is 100% realistic. Especially since they are already steamed. But boiling them in milk & honey is the same as water, unless they are not cooking them at all, since they are already partially steamed.

Steel cut oats aren’t processed as much as rolled oats. They can be prepared as overnight oats without cooking.
There is also a method of cooking them briefly for a minute and letting them sit in covered hot water overnight. Both of those methods should prevent over cooking until the nutritional value is absent. I like the flavor, and I don’t like a lot of sugar. I think sugar and too much of any type of sweetener triggers my migraines, so I try not to develop a taste for sweets. I do fruit though.
I think a true test would leave out any sweeteners or toppings and prepare using one of the overnight methods.

I'm figuring out the simple heart meal for the day. I'll try Steel Cut Oats, put walnuts in there and a little 100% dark chocolate and a can of sardines and maybe some olive oil. Wish me luck. lol
    Oatmeal = Fiber
Sardines = Omega 3s and Calcium
    Olive Oil = Omega 3s
    Walnuts = Omega 3s
    Dark Chocolate = Antioxidants.
Goal lower LDL, increase HDL, lower blood pressure and cover up the oatmeal taste without resorting to sugar.
Maybe I can put Peas and Broccoli in it, treat it like brown rice without being brown rice.
I'm an explorer in the further regions of experience.
I typically avoid oatmeal because it isn't good unless you basically put a bunch of sugar in it in the form of sugar, fruit, honey, syrup, whatever and what is the point in that case?

In my opinion, steel cut oats need to be soaked for at least a half hour before heating. That way you don't have to over heat them and lower their food value, just to get them soft enough to be chewable and digestible.

So in the original study there was more milk per volume/weight and this was due to a different milk/oats ratio used? That would not be an accurate comparison. Other than that, did they compare for duration of satiety? They really need to get the ratios right though before they can get accurate results.
