The big credit initially goes to the roll cage builders, for without that sturdy frame to rebuild on there wouldn't be this effort, as magnificent as it was.
But you can still use a rock. Outside of the service areas, it's still just the crews for themselves, with what they have in the car/can source in the nature.
The fact that the car could be repaired (so quickly) shows how far these WRC cars are from production cars. That is a shame. WRC is a circus tenuously floating on corporate money. It is of little benefit to anyone outside the show. Bring back high homologation number requirements.
It's the basic problem of using money as the fundamental motivating force behind almost everything. It turns the intended benefit into an expendable side-effect. Rally homologation was only ever a thing to sell cars. The car manufacturers have found better ways to sell cars and that's that. Rally homologation led to great and fun cars for the public, but that was never anything but a side effect to the people making decisions at the car companies, who are utterly blind to anything but the difference between how much money they make and how much they spend. It was actually very expensive for them to keep up that arms race, and ultimately accountants control everything, Also I just don't think rally style cars are nearly as popular as they once were, particularly in North America. It's all based on image and flash rather than actual results. Uselessly huge trucks and muscle cars that are pure BHP dick measuring contests.
It's of no benefit to have homologation cars. Not even to make the WRC more popular, which is the usual argument: _"I used to love rally so much because they were driving the same cars I saw on the road on my way to the stages, and which I could buy myself."_ Well, not anymore. Road cars are no longer rally-worthy. Today they are moron-proof, easy, boring. They are made for comfort and safety and ease of use, not for any performance at all. This has been the case since the mid 90's I guess. So any sufficiently good, world-class rally car needs to differ a lot from the road car formula. The current production GR Yaris is Rally3-level, at best. Not world-class. The times of Group 4 are long gone. The Evo's and Impreza's people buys have nothing to do with their respective WRC cars, and that gets reflected on the price gap. Group B cars were full-blown prototypes just like these Rally1 cars. Group A cars, at least initially, were quite related to production cars. And guess what: Kankkunen called them "cars for boys." Yes, the famous phrase is wrong. He was referring to Group A cars, long before the WRC regulations were introduced; and in fact when Group B was still around, about to get replaced by Group A. By the way, he recently tested a Rally1 car and updated his phrase: "This is like Group B; for the men, not for the boys." Production cars nowadays are for toddlers. Not world-class by any stretch.
Those dudes are legends, as soon as a car breaks down they just throw themself's on the car and it will be back soon
