Taka's humility towards his opponent and how he still keeps positive energy just shows how great of a person he is. He really is one of the best personalities in my opinion in WRC.
Richard Burns rally GB 2003. final rally, 6 points away from the title but it faded away as he was heading to the rally which turned out to be a brain tumour that would end not only his career but his life 2 years later...
Late to the party but Burns was really not doing well in the last rallies of 2003, I think something was wrong with him for sometime, until he couldn't even drive anymore. If you look at the first part of 2003, his constitency is really impressive and I believe he would have won quite comfortably without his cancer :(
Great idea for a video, here are my other moments: Mouton went off the fight for the title in '82 Ivory Coast... after the news her father passed away. Auriol in RAC '92, DNF due to a candle and title lost after a record of wins that year... Thiry DNF in Tour de Corse '95 that costed him the first win in WRC
Bruno Thiry's retirement on Corse '95 was without a doubt one of the most heartbreaking ones. And it was about the stupid servicing rules set on that season particulary that caused it. His right front wheel bearing gave up in one stage, and he had to try to repair it himself in the service between the stages. In that season, mechanics were not allowed to touch the car outside of the main service parks, they could only observe and give advice for the drivers. Can't recall did they ran out of time or they couldn't fix it. Bruno would have deserved that win 100%, he drove brilliantly in that rally.
Tommi Makinen being prevented from getting back to Service by some jobsworth copper after taking the right rear corner off his Evo on Rally GB 1998, and me accidentally tripping Tommi up whilst I was marshalling in the Service park at Felindre in 2003. His last season when he wore gold boots. I tripped him with a rope barrier coming out of the Media Centre and he ended up on his face in the mud. Fortunately he saw the funny side. Worst moment by far was Markko Martin after his crash on Rally GB in 2005, in which Michel 'Beef' Park was killed. I was marshalling the next stage and we heard about the accident from a TV crew, then that Beef was dead, then that the rally was cancelled. Markko was devastated. It was a very long, quiet drive home from South Wales. RIP Mr. Park.
@@HandsUpforThePanther, Markko gave up his WRC career after that accident. A shame, as he had talent, but I understand why he did. As you said, Beef was not just his navigator, but a very close friend.
Did Martin ever race again? I don't think he did. I remember they showed the onboard of that accident on the evening news and when they usually ask each other if they're OK after a crash Markko looked at him and screamed straight away. That's the most heartbreaking rally moment I have seen

I still wonder how did David Richards make it out of Italy alive, that day - Thiry losing its first win in Corsica in 1995 because of a technical issue which they had to try to fix with no mechanics allowed to help them, if I'm not mistaken - Mouton mathematically losing the 1982 title by retiring from the lead in the Ivory Coast - failing to fulfill the last wish of her father, who had passed away just before the rally started - Adartico Vudafieri crashing out of the lead in Sanremo 1978 while driving a privateer Lancia Stratos. His great rival, Tony Fassina, would go all the way with the same car the following year, to date he remains the last true privateer to win one of the crown jewels events of the WRC There are probably many others (excluding all those who failed to finish their last ever stage on this earth...)
The Number 1 pick could have been even more heartbreaking. Carlos could have finished the rally and then broke down on the way to final time control On the same subject. I know the drivers have media commitments but do we have to interview them when these moments happen.
The situation when the engine in Carlos Sainz’s Toyota Corolla WRC breaks down 500 metres before the finish line of the entire season and thus loses the title is impossible to beat when it comes to competition
An engine doesn't just break down. When pushed very hard and revved high over long distances, you do the same to it as you do to your tires, dampers etc if you just go full send all day during the rally. So Sainz was pushing hard and was slowly blowing his engine. However, the fact it just had to last 500 m makes it sad.
I found hilarous that a Toyota (which have a very reliable engines reputation) gives up 500m before the line :D Thats remind me a lot of the Toyota in the Le Mans stopping the last lap and losing the race

Two stages from the end with a lead of 40 seconds he dropped out by a mechanical defect. He was devastated.
Possum Bourne - Rally Australia 1993 Early on in the rally, a heavy crash resulted in the death of his co-driver and best friend, Roger Freeth. Rogers wife was the only reason he continued to rally after that until his own untimely death in 2003.
The only one I can recall from my own memory is the Evans one (I only started watching that year). It was truly heartbreaking to see him lose the title like that. I'm really hoping he can do it this year.
